I'm a simple man. I see Colter Wall, I click.
Same
I've seen many reactions to Colter Wall, but I really enjoy this guy's insight on songs. He really dives deep into the meaning and message of a song
This
Smae
Most underrated comment I’ve seen this week!!!
The story behind this song is based on the legend of Robert Johnson learning the guitar after making a deal with the devil at a crossroads.
I thought of Robert Johnson. I didn't know that! Cool info to know...
Every good aspiring guitarist knows the Robert Johnson devils pact. It’s the birth of rock!
I watched O Brother Where art Thou this week and he’s the hitch hiker they pickup in the cross roads lol
I didn’t know that, but I do love Robert Johnson.
Robert Johnson was a genius. Some of the best riff of the Rolling Stones are actually Robert Johnson’s riffs, just to mention one group among many who were inspired by him.
The dude’s guitar ability is so underrated because his vocals are outrageous
I agree, I play classical guitar/finger style and this one was tough for me.
@@jewlz72 all while also adding a kick drum in too. A lot of practice hours went into this performance! Gotta respect the work he puts in
@@coreywigal5435 and he was like what..early 20s lmao.
This is an old recording of him. There is a whole series of these with Colter. He has since grown into his voice and developed quite a bit as a performer. My favorite song of his is “13 silver dollars” but most would direct you to “Kate McCannon”. His songs “Nuthin” and “Me and Big Dave” are also ones that touched me.
living on the sand is also one of my favorite ones from that album, his new song summer dean is also pretty good
@@mattwing621 Bob Fudge and Bald Bute all the way
"Kate McCannon" is a MUST LISTEN for MrLboyd
Great choices but Motorcycle is the closest thing to a perfect song there is
Love to see 13 Silver Dollars get the love it deserves.
My favorite song of Colter's is "Sleeping on the blacktop". He is amazing! I heard the song in the movie "Hell or High water" and fell in love with it and had to find out who did it. I'm so glad I did.
Sleeping on the Blacktop is one of my favorites of his too.
Same here, great soundtrack. I liked the movie too, hard not to cheer for the outlaws taking down the evil bankers.
Am I right in believeing it's about a man who ran over some people or hit another vehicle and sees their ghosts on his travels to the next town and so on?
@@tonyoliver2167 I don't think the man telling the story was involved in the crash. I don't know what it all means, but I like it.
If u really enjoyed this you should check out colter's amazing old school murder ballad, "Kate McCannon"
It's insane how young he was during this performance. I saw him in early 2018 and I believe he had just turned 20 or 21. His voice is amazing. It will bring you to tears.
The thing I like most about Country artists is the storys in their music.
Me too. I grew up listening to Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and John Prine. The story is what makes the song.
And he’s from Canada believe it or not
@@okscribbles9556 cool, there are some great artisys from Canada Rush comes to mind.
He wasn’t ready for the Colter wall epic voice I highly recommend Bob fudge and Kate Mccannon and fraulin
I love Bob Fudge. Good choice.
@@aaronhoward464 hell yeah that and it’s a relatable song to those of us from Texas moving out to Montana
@@Texasgodzillakun I'm not leaving Texas yet, best of luck though!
Fraulein
@@TheSilentsniper1973 yeah that
i love the reaction of people at his first "Well..". Never ceases to make me grin when people look surprised
I've been listening to one Colter Wall song in Spotify for almost 2 years. I assumed he was an older man. I'm in legit shock that he's only 26. That voice is WILD.
he was like 22 when he wrote this song
@@kodiak3995 I think he is only 19 here. 🍺
If you like the brewery session idea, definitely listen to Sturgill Simpson “You Can Have the Crown”. It’s a great version of a great somg
Hey like ya brought up double meanings.... 1degree between hot & STEAM! One can conduct power fast yet cause fade of soul yet attract deep desires.
Going to check out your suggestion @Jeff Storey
Sturgill Simpson all day sir. You would really specifically like that type of specific content
2nd this
3rd
Yeah the sound and video quality there are top notch
He was about 20 or 21 when he did these sessions and his voice has matured GREATLY in the years since. He's said in an interview he's actually quite embarrassed how much he is forcing his voice down here. I still enjoy these sessions a lot since its how I was introduced to him. To hear a refined Colter, I would HIGHLY recommend watching his cover of a song called Cowpoke from the Western AF UA-cam channel.
It’s great to see Saskatchewan on the map through Colter’s talent. 🇨🇦
Too bad he only talks about it in 1881. 😃
As someone who's always looking for great music, are there some other artists from Saskatchewan that you would recommend? I only heard about this artist through this reaction video. I love his sound and lyrics. Thanks if you see this and take the time to respond.
@@davebeach2343 The Dead South are terrific. Blake Berglund and Belle Plaine. Tenille Arts and Jess Moskaluke if you are into more mainstream stuff.
@@jjj832 Thanks for the reply. I listen to the Dead South already. Their sound is definitely something that I appreciate. The lyrics are what makes me come back. Typically I'll listen to a song and get drawn in because of the sound and style of the band. The second time around I pay particular attention to the lyrics. I'm partial to story telling songs. I find it particularly impressive when a song writer can tell a story through the relatively few words that a song contains. The combination of a great sound and well written lyrics is what I'm always searching for in music. I've been listening to music for over 50 years now, and I absolutely love talking with other people about what music they love, and giving them suggestions of what I love.
I will check out the other two artists you reccomend. I would also like to give you some artists that I like, based on your suggestion of the Dead South.
First, the group's name is Gangstagrass, it's a mixture of bluegrass and rap. In particular I'd recommend two songs, "Nickel and Dime Blues", and "You Can Never Go Home Again". Both songs are personal favorites.
One more suggestion is an album from 1979 titled "Broken English" by Marianne Faithful. This is rock-n-roll at it's best. She has been around since she was a girlfriend of Mick Jagger. Jagged and Richards wrote their first song together for her, "As Tears Go By". Anyway, if you like rock music you might give it a listen, either the first track "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" or the last "Why'd Ya Do It".
Sorry for going on so long, but I lost my wife to covid19 in March, and music was a central part of our lives. She sang in an opera chorus for 16 seasons, directed a church choir for 11 years, and sang with other groups also. We both considered music essential in our lives, great music evokes great emotion. So I find some solace in discussions with other people about music in general. I didn't really participate in any online activities until after she passed away, with the exception of searching UA-cam videos looking for something good. I thank you for your earlier reply, and for taking the time to read and respond to this rambling text if you choose to do so. No worries and GL
I love this song, and they say he perfectly, imperfectly plays the instruments, is a subtle hint that he never sold his soul to learn them...
my favorite song by him was also covered in this same brewery session: Colter Wall - "Sleeping on the Blacktop" I was hooked on him after this song, thanks for reacting to him, you are a legend sir.
This man was about 19 I think when he sang this recording of the song. He has really grown into his singing voice over the years. Please listen to more of him!
I like "Kate McCannon" more. It's in the classic "murder ballad" genre.
This is the next song, for sure! Same brewery sessions version. If you wanna go for thirds after that, Sleepin on the Blacktop. He actually doesn't sing like this anymore and he says he's glad he doesn't. He was forcing it. I love his voice in these brewery sessions, I hate to say it but I think he sounded better forcing it than he does using his natural voice these days. But I'm also glad he's doing him.
Love how you're reacting to different music. Should chech out Shawn James - Through The Valley live.
Colter is one of those treasures more people need to know about
Sturgill Simpson has some brewery sessions. He is an artist you should really check out his SNL performance is one of the best ever on SNL.
Seeing new people discover colter makes me smile lol. True talent knows no boundaries/genre
Sleepin on the blacktop is an incredible and somewhat tragic song. Absolutely beautiful, would recommend. Really anything of his is good tho
Colter Wall is the son of the former Premier (Governor) of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan (Sask-atch-e-win)that brought us out of colonial Canadian poverty. The beer company is a local brewery owned by former employees that bought the facility when the major beer corporation pulled out of Sask. Colter was born to sing and has soo many amazing songs. I can’t listen to Caroline without getting chills and tears! (And I never liked country music before him).
I was wondering how long it was going to take before you got a taste of Colter. Sleeping on the Blacktop is excellent, and also on the Brewery Sessions platform, but he has quite a few good songs to pick from. Enjoyed the reaction.
The Robert Johnson story is what I assume he's talking about.
Caroline is another one of my favorites. Absolutely love his voice. It’s also a duet.
Highway 61 is in Mississippi and it's where Robert Johnson supposed to have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads but Colter is a a very talented song writer and guitar picker but you can't say he's a country artist but more so on the fringe of country but great reaction thanks
Highway 61 re-revisted
Check out "Last July" by Shakey Graves. Youll enjoy how many instruments that guy plays at once.
Colter: "well...."
Everyone: stops what they are saying mid sentence and listens
This guy has been on a lot of back porches overlooking alligator swamps in the deep south with some old, old men? 1920-1930 vibe here! Love that old simple washboard, spoons, handmade guitar real soul felt blues! Can't get enough of it! Robert Johnson comes to mind.
Bro, Colter Wall's - "Kate McCannon" is even, more amazing.
It's based off the myth that you can summon a demon at a crossroads and essentially make a deal where you get a wish and the demon makes a contract where they'll come after you in 10 years to drag you to Hell.
You just opened a door.
Shakey Graves - Late July
The Dead South (who does brewery sessions) - any
Amigo the Devil - any
Colter Wall live performances never ever disappoint, Thirteen Silver dollars was fantastic, Motorcycle, Rocky Mountain Rangers.. proud to say Colter is a Canadian!
Plot twist Mrlboyr is the actual singer in this song
Colter is lipsinging
I didn't figure you for this genra, this guy's AL Johnny Cash but he reads Dwight Yoakum. Interesting
You HAVE to do sleeping on the blacktop now!!!
I second that. And thank you to whomever requested this one.
Yes several brewery sessions for new up and coming artists who want a free recording.
A few of my favourites from this end of the music spectrum
Tyler Childers - Nose on the grindstone (OurVinyl session)
Benjamin Todd - Using again
Whiskey Myers - Broken window serenade
Uncle Lucius - Keep the wolves away.
Thank you in advance! Keep up the good work.
If Muddy Waters had a white grandbaby
What's up kin folk lovin your reactions. Your quick and concise reactions withholding extemporaneous extrapolation are a god send compared to the commonly overreactive channels I'm used to seeing in youtube. Continue to keep it real and as you say work until you're recognized, Peace Bro.
U need to ceck out, "Shakey Graves"
This song and Sleeping on the Blacktop are my absolute favorites of Colter's. Pure Dynamite.
I'm a fan of his songs "Henry & Sam" as well as "Ride An Old Paint / Leaving Cheyenne."
I also cast a vote for Kate mccannon
This compared to Cowpoke will really show how far he’s come. But there’s so much in between also
Listen to kate mckannon
finally hit my suggestion
The best musicians of history all sold there souls to the devil...... why would I want to go anywhere else?
I believe this is folk rock, but it also reminds me of the blues. Funny thing is, people used to call the blues, “Devil’s music”. Because of the mention of the devil in the songs. But, to me, it wasn’t in reverence to, but to warn of, the Devil. A figure as supernatural as the things that go bump in the night. Or any strange cryptic stalking the Smokies or the trees. The song really gives off a supernatural vibe to it. Of folklore and southern gothic.
my first time hearing him but this reminds me of Johnny Cash a story telling song and the sound of his voice
Decent mic, but.
Nice headphones, man.
Don't think we don't recognize.
Also, you're alright. Sub'd.
Not a big fan of the genre but this was pretty dope. Thanks for helping expanding peoples music knowledge.
Love this guy KATE McCanon Sleepin on the blacktop are good songs too . Check out STURGIL SIMPSON Hes another good Artist .
His song “Kate McCannon” is even better. Give it a listen. Also, check out Shawn James singing “Flow,” and Tyler Childers doing “Banded Clovis.” They’re all great stories sung by talented musicians.
Uncle Lucius - Keep The Wolves Away...check it out. It's a band we had down in Texas. Unfortunately they have gone their separate ways.
I would suggest you listen to his songs “Kate McCannon” “Sleeping on the Blacktop” and his cover of Marty Robins’ “Big Iron”
just a reminder to evryone Colter Wall was only 19 YEARS OLD while making "TDWST"
No Colter Wall since this?? Wow. Kate McCannon by Colter. Also from the Brewery Sessions. Trust me.
Colter Wall - “Kate McCannon” Original 16 Brewery Session - killer song! Such a great story teller! ua-cam.com/video/hCebq5lLgos/v-deo.html
more colter? As a matter of fact...
during the 'rona govn't shutdown. He was working as a "ranch hand" actually riding horse and watchen over a herd. He recorded many new tunes and covers .
BUNKHOUSE Sessions !!
he put out many in a little shack over the last year.
No one has done any reactions to them. if you do.. maybe not alot at first , but when colter blows up !.......
React to Tampa red!!! (You clearly already know Robert Johnson after this video) I recommend things bout comin my way.
I started cackling with unmitigated glee the second you heard his voice, because that was much the same reaction I had. I'm glad I'm not the only one that fell in love with Colter Wall's voice the second it touched my ears.
You're one of my favorite channels on YT. You're impressive with a high knowledge base in music and history. (The rap battles)
Check out “The Whistler” by The White Buffalo m.ua-cam.com/video/o5hrbJfzj-E/v-deo.html
Kate McCann is in the same session brother. He sounds like he is possessed by the soul of Johnny Cash in Kate McCann
MrLboyd:
Please react to Kate McCannon, Sleeping on the Blacktop and Cowpoke...
Yeah, Boyd, you're exploring music! So much hear and enjoy!
Much Love!
So good. Love him so much. Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan, Kurt Vile also listen worthy
I'd sell my soul readily. I don't think "souls" exist. If they do, human souls are kind of shit anyways. I'd never sell my dogs soul. (Whether their soul exists or not)
Definitely one of my favorite artists on the scene, I highly recommend Caroline, Kate mccannon, sleeping on the blacktop, or big iron.
Ooh …consider listening to Alabama Shakes (reminds me of a modern Rolling Stones - female lead who is amazing and writes a lot of their stuff) and also listen to St Paul and the Broken Bones !
I’m here for your rap reactions but I love Independent county too #HOG #Creeksquad
this is blues, but yeah, its really good
Can we just take a moment to gush over this man's insane vibrato
Think about it.. the brewery pays for all the video and cost to put it out there and gets all profits from the advertisement and Colter dosn't have to pay for none of it and gets exposure out about his music.. it's a win-win
You want blues? Allman Brothers ...Worried Down With The Blues.
If you're into this give Brother Dege a listen. Here's another "session" type recording: ua-cam.com/video/dWYEL7hOHwk/v-deo.html
Robert Johnson was rumored to sell his soul to pay blues and Eric Clapton played his song Crossroads which Robert Johnson wrote.
If you liked his voice check out "the great white Buffalo" songs like "the woods" or "the Whistler"
Watch the movie Crossroads. That's where I first heard about that story. I assume most people who love music have seen it but if you haven't you need to check it out.
I discovered Colter Wall a year ago! And he's freaking awesome! Also look into Brent Cobb
You should listen to Craig Morgan dither son and Holy Ghost. It’s about his son that passed. Bring a Kleenex
next one from brewery sessions : Colter Wall "Sleepin On The Blacktop"
While Kate McCannon is a great song, check out his newer stuff such as Rocky Mountain Rangers or Houlihans at the Holiday Inn
The devil wears a suit and tie because that’s the record industry. They’ll make songs the girls will dance to but you lose your yourself along the way.
Seasick Steve........."you can't teach an old dog new tricks".
Actually , the crossroads Robert Johnson sold his soul at is in Mississippi at hwy 61 and 49, so they say, right?
I noticed the words in the bottom of the screen are sometimes wrong. However yes this is an early recording of this. This is about Robert Johnson legendary blues stringer!
Kate McCannon is definitely a must watch!
Robert Johnson sold his sole to be the best guitar player they say he went to the cross roads then he showed up about 1 year and like 2 months later and played like a fucking god some rumors say he most of the time he played with his back facing the audience because he would play with one hand but that one hand would grown another hand and play with him
These recommendations check out. Several of the few country artists who dont promote the white agenda.
I encourage mrlboyd to learn who Robert Johnson is before he attempts to weigh in. this is a powerful tale that you ruined with your silly commentary
Look at Sun King Brewery sessions. Several other breweries that offer free recordings to new up and comers.
Colfer did another session there for Kate McCannon very recommended!
Same session.
Hey man, if you liked his ability to play multiple instruments at once and deliver - check out SHAKEY GRAVES - ROLL THE BONES. It's this but electric guitar. Do the AUDIO TREE version!!
Would love to see you check out Amigo The Devil, One Kind of People or really any of his songs.
Bro. It’s just lyrics. I think we all understand not to sell our souls and if we do it’s our problem.
Also I think the devil in a suit and tie also means when u sign a record deal most of the time they sign the deal without reading over all of it and next thing you know the basically own you after that and they tell you what to do what not to do also most of the time the can’t even say words like Jesus is king or like if u win a award you can’t say Jesus is god or I thank the one and only savior Jesus Christ
Specifically you must check out banded clovis by tyler childers
