Great song retelling the legend of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the Devil at The Crossroads. Legend is that The Crossroad are in the North Mississippi Delta area. The 61 he refers to is Highway 61 that runs from Memphis to New Orleans. It’s also called The Blues Trail.
I could easily hear Johnny Cash sing this song. The simplicity of the guitar picking with the minimal drum to keep time, you can picture him sitting AT the crossroads while singing this.
The Series 10 Cadillac referenced was a real but short lived car produced from 1934 to 1935. Assuming the Devil doesn't drive a used car, this puts timeframe of the story just a year before Robert Johnson's first known recording session in 1936.
The third name that always gets mentioned is Charley Crockett, with Colter and Tyler. I loved Welcome to Hard Times, Midnight Run (more than the James Hand original), and Jamestown Ferry. You might also like Kassi Valazza's Johnny My Dear, and Shawn James's various versions of Through the Valley (his latest at The Old Church is astounding.)
I looked up the town and have a different view in my head now. Good ole fashioned small town style farm country, at least the images I saw. It's beautiful.
Best speech Brad Wall ever made was making the announcement for the new stadium. A politician promising to do something that actually got done. I wonder if the kid has played there, he must have.
The 61 is in reference to Highway 61 in Western Mississippi. Yazoo City area. This is where Robert Johnson met at the crossroads and sold his soul in the legend.
Would love for him to hear Cowpoke from Western AF from Colter. Not an original, but it really shows how much his voice has matured. He is very critical of these early recordings at the brewery.
Hope that y'all do some more colter vids. So many reaction channels do this song and NO MORE. I love this song, but his music and his voice evolved so much since then. Love ol brother Colter!
@Flickering Box "Cowpoke" is a great song that I'd say is kind of on the opposite end of Colter's style and range. And "Bald Butte" is my favorite tune of his, so I've got to recommend that, too.
@@flickeringboxofficial He went more 50's country in Western Swing and Waltzes, with a lot of covers from that time. But his latest, Cypress Hills and the Big Country, finds a happy medium!
I seen him in a bar in Charleston WV years ago. Didn't have a clue and hearing him live I had the exact initial reaction you did when I heard that voice
There is also a documentary about Robert Johnson on netflix if you haven't seen it yet. Gives a great view about his life and how he lost his life before he really got famous. I really enjoyed it. Great video :)
Sounds even better with his more natural voice, you could always see how much he had to strain to get that deep in the early days. Cowpoke or Big Iron, (both old covers,) show his real voice better
I have newly discovered your channel and have just started to follow y'all. I went back to your earlier videos trying to see more of your stuff and I'm just curious how you both know each other. None of my business l, just being curious.
This is the story of blues man Robert Johnson who was rumored to have sold his soul at the crossroads of Mississippi to be able to play the guitar as well as he did.
That is absolutely amazing and hard to wrap your head around. The song just feels old and wise and it's evidently far beyond his years. True and rare talent. Thank you for that info Jason.
Thank you Zachary, I thought it had that feel and I even mentioned it at the end of the video. Steph has never heard of Robert so I am adding that one to the list.
This guy said at the beginning it’s a blues riff and then comes to the conclusion that the song is about someone screwing him over? If you knew anything about the blues, you’d know this is just a retelling of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil in order to be the best guitarist who ever lived.
Thank you Jose, we did post our reaction to Zach Bryan's Something in the Orange. Here is that link ua-cam.com/video/HGms-Ds1KF0/v-deo.html Please let us know if you have another song of his that you would recommend.
Jason Momoa actually introduced me to Colter’s music and I’ve never looked back since! Great artist. This is my favourite song of his along with Kate McCannon, sleeping on the black top, motorcycle
He’s from my city Swift Current in Saskatchewan, Canada. He mentions Speedy Creek in a song which is what people call our city. And he mentions the Number 4 highway which also goes through Swift Current.
I believe in that video, Colter is 21 or 22. You're definitely gonna have to show him Kate McCannon and Bob Fudge!!! An amazing Murder Ballot and a great storytelling of the old West cattle country. Colter is Plains music, while on the other side of the coin, Tyler is Appalachian music.
lot of great country singers out there that get little to no radio play. colter and tyler imo are at the top of that list. tyler childers should be the next artist you discover
no he doesn't write all his own music. certainly he is a solid lyricist but his covers are plentiful and excellent. cowpoke, big iron, bob fudge and a dozen more...his takes on them is pure talent
When I first heard colter wall I assumed he was an older guy. I didn’t see a picture for awhile after hearing him and I was picturing an old bald dude with a big beard and bigger gut. Imagine my surprise when I saw a young skinny guy only a little older than myself
I hate over produced country music. This guy is a breath of fresh air with an original persona. I hope the industry doesn’t get a hold of him and ruin him.
Neil Young was from Manitoba, Colter is from Saskatchewan ... when you have winters that rip from September till May ... you sit inside and practice, practice, practice.
In all honesty you’d have to show him either cowpoke, Kate McCannon or especially Bob Fudge all songs Colter Wall that I absolutely love and never gets old for me. Also could show him Frauline and introduce him to Tyler Childers if ya haven’t already.
No he was talking about selling his soul at the cross roads. You were right the first time. He even mentions the highway 61. Cotten fields, that mans lessons came with a price my own sweet soul... How did you shift to somebody screwed him over dang.
Harmonica player Adam Gussow has a really nice one man band version of Crossroad Blues. I've always love the crossroads blues mythology. I've actually got my own song in that genre, a sort of harmonica oriented retelling of it from the devil's perspective. The harp player wins, and gets the devil sings, "He demanded my whole kingdom, and a harp of gold... but I got me the recording rights... that's why this job never gets old". :)
Soooo lucky. That had to be awesome with such a close up show like that. Burch said we are going next time he comes to town so fingers crossed. Thank you for sharing Alex
Thought if felt like Robert Johnson. We have added some RJ and Son House to the list. Thanks indiandeuce.
I could easily hear Johnny Cash sing this song. The simplicity of the guitar picking with the minimal drum to keep time, you can picture him sitting AT the crossroads while singing this.
Hwy 61 goes from the gulf to Canada, a great travel road to feel real America.
🎉🎉❤
The Series 10 Cadillac referenced was a real but short lived car produced from 1934 to 1935. Assuming the Devil doesn't drive a used car, this puts timeframe of the story just a year before Robert Johnson's first known recording session in 1936.
I heard somebody say that, "Colter Wall sounds like he rolled up Johnny Cash's ashes and then smoked them!" I thought it was very accurate
He's 19 in this video, he also plays his own kick drum while playing guitar and singing
Fun fact. His father is the former premier of Saskatchewan, Brad Wall. I always love to see a Saskatchewan boy make good!
So he's met his share of crooked suit and tie guys then.
Glad there are still real artists springing from the world of country and blues. So seemingly rare.
Seirra Ferrel is great too!
Absolutely love Colter Wall , Kate McCannon by him is my absolute favorite. Love watching you guys.❤
Colter Wall, a good ol' Sasky boy. His dad (Brad Wall) was premier of our province (Saskatchewan).
I saw him at a small venue in Sturgis, South Dakota a few years ago and he blew my goddamn mind!
That must have been cool as all get out Taylor. When he comes this way we are going to see him for sure.
The 61 is in reference to Highway 61 in Western Mississippi. Yazoo City area. This is where Robert Johnson met at the crossroads and sold his soul in the legend.
Always awesome to see more reactions to colter grew up in sask with him and always happy to see his reach expanding
Would love for him to hear Cowpoke from Western AF from Colter. Not an original, but it really shows how much his voice has matured. He is very critical of these early recordings at the brewery.
Thank you sixtyfore, just added it to the list!
When I first HEARD Colter Wall, I thought this was an older fella with that weathered voice. Then, I looked him up and was wait what...
Best way I have to describe this guys music.... “This is what I listen to when when I’m waiting for the dust to settle around me.”
kate mccannon and sleeping on the blacktop are a must for the next ones, subbed waiting on those, cheers =)
On the list now Patrick, thank you. I have another CW song, Bob Fudge on the list for Burch to react to.
Hope that y'all do some more colter vids. So many reaction channels do this song and NO MORE. I love this song, but his music and his voice evolved so much since then. Love ol brother Colter!
We have more Colter on the list. Do you have a particular song you would like us to do?
@Flickering Box "Cowpoke" is a great song that I'd say is kind of on the opposite end of Colter's style and range. And "Bald Butte" is my favorite tune of his, so I've got to recommend that, too.

Lol the look on your face when he sang. Subscribed! Haha
That was sooooooo unexpected. Love those moments Seth, too much fun.
You gotta introduce him to Kate Mckinnon by Colter Wall! Great story telling and obviously great music/vocals as well! Think he would love it
Kate McKinnon? The comedian? lol
I swear every girl just falls in love with Colter when they hear his voice.
One vocal teacher reacted on UA-cam and I swear she had an orgasm listening to him sing
I had heard that he was 19 when he did the brewery session.
That is amazing Donald. He is truly a rare talent.
Write this when he was 19. Was 21 here
I seen him in a bar in Charleston WV years ago. Didn't have a clue and hearing him live I had the exact initial reaction you did when I heard that voice
*I SAW him....
Love it!
Thanks Zachary!
Love you guys!
Colter wall was 19 when he performed this song
blessings!
There is also a documentary about Robert Johnson on netflix if you haven't seen it yet. Gives a great view about his life and how he lost his life before he really got famous. I really enjoyed it. Great video :)
Perfect! I have not seen it so we will ad it to our movie list that we will be reacting to. Thank you Warren!
he was 19 in this video.
That is amazing Lawrence.
were you thinking about "the ride" by David Allan Coe or "Midnight in Montgomery" by Allan Jackson? this song always reminds me of those
Cross roads is real I live about a hour drive north. Been there creepy as hell
The song was written from Robert Johnson’s story per Colten himself
Shannon curfman has a pretty cool song about the crossroads called Playing With Fire.
His voice honestly reminds me of Johnny Cash. I liked this reaction vid
Great 🇨🇦 artistry
19 when this was recorded
Sounds even better with his more natural voice, you could always see how much he had to strain to get that deep in the early days. Cowpoke or Big Iron, (both old covers,) show his real voice better
I have newly discovered your channel and have just started to follow y'all. I went back to your earlier videos trying to see more of your stuff and I'm just curious how you both know each other. None of my business l, just being curious.
You should listen to Jake Kohn Frostbite. He was 16 during his video. Crazy low voice
he did a great job of singing johnny cash
Still waiting for the follow up videos 😊.
It is about Robert Johnson and the Crossroads
I'm a Metal Fan and can't stand Country but that song, that's not bad at all 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This girl is willing to risk it all in front of pops.
He was 21 in this video!
Jesse!
Colter Wall is currently 27, I think he was in his early 20s at the time of that video, though.
He is 27 now
Watch the jam session with Jason Momoa
This is the story of blues man Robert Johnson who was rumored to have sold his soul at the crossroads of Mississippi to be able to play the guitar as well as he did.
He was 21
He was 19 when he recorded this
That is incredible Daniel. Talent knows no age!
There is a genre music called country blues.
Ya'll should check out Put the gun down by ZZ Ward
You should check out Jonny Lang and The Levee. It also talks about the crossroads.
We will add it to the list, Jonny is an amazing guitarist for sure. Thank you for the recommendation JWmson
@@flickeringboxofficial And that voice!!
Have you listened to any “Shaky Graves “?
He was 19 when this was recorded
That is absolutely amazing and hard to wrap your head around. The song just feels old and wise and it's evidently far beyond his years. True and rare talent. Thank you for that info Jason.
@@flickeringboxofficial He and Tyler Childers did a song together you should check out
He was 22
Next react to keith urban blue eyes baby and dallas smith plz.
Not sure where you got the idea that he writes all of his songs, he does many cover s
Very Johnny Cash
You’re gonna do Tyler, right? Tyler Childers deserves a spot on this channel.
Recorded a Tyler reaction last and will post in the next day or two. Thank you Grim
Songs about robert johnson
I mentioned that at the end of the reaction. We are going to do some Robert Johnson and Son House in future videos. Thank you Shertgrass.
The voice shocks you it definitely does not look like it belongs to colter lol
It was inspired by Robert Johnson
Thank you Zachary, I thought it had that feel and I even mentioned it at the end of the video. Steph has never heard of Robert so I am adding that one to the list.
Sounds like he was at least partially influenced by the man in black.
Ur eyes are sooo blue bro, lol
Dylan?
This guy said at the beginning it’s a blues riff and then comes to the conclusion that the song is about someone screwing him over? If you knew anything about the blues, you’d know this is just a retelling of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil in order to be the best guitarist who ever lived.
Wow! And to think if I only mentioned Robert at 08:47 into the video. Sometimes it helps to watch the whole video 🤪🤣🤘
You need to listen to Zach Bryan
Thank you Jose, we did post our reaction to Zach Bryan's Something in the Orange. Here is that link ua-cam.com/video/HGms-Ds1KF0/v-deo.html Please let us know if you have another song of his that you would recommend.
it not a blues jam at all... why he keep sayin that?
?
He’s matured a lot in his vocals. Smoothed it out. It just gets better and better.
I have been listening to colter a while now and its good to see he gets the recognition he deserves, i think he is 27, 21 when he preformed this song
That is awesome and Steph has more of his on the list for us!
Pretty sure he was 19 when he did this
He was 19
I knew his jaw was gonna hit the floor when he started singing! 😂😂😂😂😂 GREAT VIDEO!!
Jason Momoa actually introduced me to Colter’s music and I’ve never looked back since! Great artist. This is my favourite song of his along with Kate McCannon, sleeping on the black top, motorcycle
Give Corb Lund a listen, great country artist who is keeping it country.
I saw him at Billy Bob's! He sounds just as good live and puts on a great show!
That is incredible and you are so lucky. If he comes down by Florida way, we will be going...you can bet on it :)
He’s from my city Swift Current in Saskatchewan, Canada. He mentions Speedy Creek in a song which is what people call our city. And he mentions the Number 4 highway which also goes through Swift Current.
Just looked up the town Sam and it looks very scenic with the older bridges and farming silos.
Speedy creek take a peek

Bob fudge is actually an Ian Tyson tune.
lot of great country singers out there that get little to no radio play. colter and tyler imo are at the top of that list. tyler childers should be the next artist you discover

Right there with ya buddy. It's a little surreal when you first hear the voice with the person.
I hate over produced country music. This guy is a breath of fresh air with an original persona. I hope the industry doesn’t get a hold of him and ruin him.
He was NINETEEN, yes, when he came out with this. Try "Caroline", please. You will have tears in your eyes, guaranteed
I believe he was 21 in this, and is 27 now.
Neil Young was from Manitoba, Colter is from Saskatchewan ... when you have winters that rip from September till May ... you sit inside and practice, practice, practice.
Bachman and Cummings weren't too shabby as songwriters. Like Colter, Neil Young had a famous dad too.
I still can’t believe colter wall is Canadian😂
He’s also a real working cowboy in Saskatchewan. Rumor has it he turned down a duet because he was working cattle in the wilderness
A good ol' Saskatchewan boy
Huge colter wall fan! Have all he albums on vinyl.
He sells vinyl as well? How cool is that! Thanks for that tid bit Thurston.
Love the channel! Shakey Graves - roll the bones. hes also unique, plays a double kick peddle! Keep up the good work!

No he was talking about selling his soul at the cross roads. You were right the first time. He even mentions the highway 61. Cotten fields, that mans lessons came with a price my own sweet soul... How did you shift to somebody screwed him over dang.
Colter's dad is Bradley John Wall (14th premier of Saskatchewan).
He is talking about Robert Johnson
I thought so. Going to have Steph reacting to some RJ and Sonhouse.
He is talking about Robert Johnson and yhe crossroads
Colter spends more time working on a ranch than he does touring

Ah yes Texas “the Midwest” lol
Sorry Alex, in Florida...anything west of Pensacola and east of California is midwest :)
He mentions Ol' Miss in an earlier stanza in the song so there is a Robert Johnson reference in the song. Great reaction.
