According to legend, as a swan lays dying, it will sing a song. And it will be most mournful, most beautiful song you have ever heard in your life.

This was a formative iconic song for me in my youth.. . a song about self harm, depression, and suicide. Trent Reznor was speaking directly to me and for me with that song. Johnny Cash covering this song with THIS FN VIDEO takes it to a whole other level. It's no longer Trent's song. 10/10 will cry again.

As always, I am in tears at the end of this video for HURT. This song, in so many ways, is my story. So many times I’ve let people believe in me just to half hearted apologize as I let them down again. And just like in the song, I too am a recovery opioid junky. In the past 5 years I’ve gone through two leg amputations but only allowed myself minimal pain meds. I’m not bragging, it’s a penance I must pay. And as in the song I am TRULY alone. My son hasn’t spoken to me in 6 years and my second wife left four years ago. I got what I deserved. I’ve been a cold person in my life and I know that I’m now getting my come up-pin’s. But it still hurts. This song is far too much of a graphic reminder of the failure I am. I’m currently in therapy with a psychiatrist but don’t know what I’m really hoping for. In a weird way watching this song and video while sobbing uncontrollably is like a strange therapy I guess. Thank you for your breakdown of this song.

The whole song and video hits you like a train. Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) wrote this as a young man raging at the world. Johnny turned it around as a lament really, as an old man looking back over his years, trying to put triumph, torment, and loss into some sort of perspective. He knew his time here was now short. The very end where he closes the piano lid tells me that he knew and his mission on Earth was complete, all the good and the bad. From the fast cuts at the end that include Jesus and the cross he knew where he was going and could now be at peace finally. I'm 75 and frequently go through those reflective periods, and I can see the end of my runway from here. And like Johnny I know where I am going too. Thank you my God, Lord and King Jesus, Amen

Man if you knew his life you’d understand everything he’s saying. The symbolism in this song is his life. I remember when he was doing so much meth he would go nuts on stage, and he was arrested bringing drugs from Mexico. He was the biggest country star in the world and on a path of self destruction. As a fan I expected any day to hear he was dead, but then he met June Carter and his whole life changed. When he was a child his older brother was killed by a board saw while Johnny was fishing and his father blamed him. His whole life was trying to win his father’s approval. Appearances can be deceiving and Johnny cash hid his pain well.

At first I though you'd have insight, then I worried that you'd ruin Johnny Cash for me.
    He's passed on.

To interrupt his very first words of with an aside about your own completely incongruent feelings gives me pause to wonder what sort of ‘therapy’ your clients get.
Shut up and listen you might learn something.
Your breathtaking lack of perspective is glaringly apparent every time you interrupt the song with your own vapid thoughts. This song is meant to be digested as a whole. Breaking down each line is like eating each ingredient of a meal separately without preparation.
Instead of taking in the ‘bread’ of this song, you’ve made it mouthfuls of flour and salt, neither of which nourish a soul by themselves.
You lack the depth to meet people in true suffering where they’re at.. and you do yourself and your clients a disservice pretending otherwise.

Dude, this is a Trent Reznor song. It was not written as a country song. Your analysis makes you look kinda ignorant.

Holy crap I cannot stand reaction videos like this that constantly pause in between a song, especially as emotional as this one to comment on it. It’s like having to stop in the middle of climaxing🙄🤦🏻‍♂️👎🏼.

That is not his wife in the video, it is June Carter daughter. June had already passed.

Not true... June Carter Cash WAS his wife... Roseanne Cash is his daughter. It IS June in the video.
This video was made in February 2003, June passed on 15 May 2003, and Johnny passed on 12 September 2003.

It all makes sense as soon as you realize that his "greatest friend" is Jesus Christ. He is hurting his savior and wishes to start over and save Jesus from the press of his sins.
