Morgan Wallen, Ernest, Hardy, Chris Stapleton, Colter Wall, Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers or Oliver Anthony. If you don't like any of them your ears are broken :)
That goofy show Yellowstone has nothing on the real cowboys. Colter is a certified ranch hand. Music is his hobby on the side. I would absolutely love to jam with him and spend a day learning what he does on the ranch. ❤🤙🏼
His voice is so unique. I love how he tells the story - you can visualise everything through his intensity. Would really like him to cover A Boy Named Sue in his unique style!
100% agree with u when u said Colter's voice and style reminded me immediately of "the man in black". Colters voice is incredible! I sure hope he is discovered and makes it to the big stage! Tnx for making this video! 👍
The simplicity you rightly refer to is, of course, anything but easy. Part of the magic lies in the minimalist text. Minimalism gives the audience work to do, and that kind of engagement contributes greatly to one’s appreciation. He is a gifted artist, and your analysis nails that. Thanks!
Cowpoke, Bury Me Not, Sleeping On The Black Top all amazing. Colter brought back the Mrdr ballad. Cow Poke will shock with you with his mixed/head voice!!!
"..............was he chewing gum the whole time???" 😂 God, Colter is too good. Someone else mentioned "cowpoke" and I can honestly say i've never heard somebody sing the word "beans" more beautifully. Would recommend!

One thing that is so impressive with these Original 16 Sessions performances is the simplicity of everything. Vocals, a kick drum, and an acoustic guitar. "Songs of the Plains" is his best album IMO. The song "Plain to See Plainsman" actually makes me feel good and I just can take off from my worries and be somewhere else while listening. And "Wild Dogs"...reminds me of my wild years...
As a vocalist I'm really attracted to music with sparse instrumentation too but it's a double-edged sword, right? You have to be really on your game. Thanks for the reaction as always. :)
Agree w/ a lot of the other commenters, you will love "Cowpoke" if you haven't already listened to it by now. Colter Wall is one of those old souls in a young mans body. Had the pleasure of meeting him at the Tumbleweed Music Festival 2017 and I've got to say he has got to be THE MOST HUMBLE artist I have met thus far.
He's in no rush to tell the story, is he? Holds us in suspense. And yes, he sounds like Cash. Reminds me of Cash's voice and pacing from Don't Take your Guns to Town.
I love his work, from this album especially. More subtle in the studio version, but that's so often the case. I'd love to hear what you've got to say about Erika Wennerstrom (more known as a songwriter than a singer, but her voice has a lot of character).
This song is called a murder ballad. It originated in Scandinavia, England, and lowland Scotland in the premodern era So many Irish and Scottish and English settled in Appalachia KY, WV, VA they became commen. They became more American when the Supernatural was removed. I think Colter wrote this song when he was in WV and making the album Colter Wall and Imaginary Appalachia. I don’t know what the vocal equivalent is, but he always tunes his guitar low, but used a capo to bring the pitch back up, creating that buzzy rattling tone. I think if you have him a standard tuned guitar it’d lose that sound he creates, Bob Fudge is my favorite story telling song
I LOVE that you compare him to Johnny Cash, because a lot of people do and I completely agree. Anyone that knows Cash knows this to be true, they both tell very dark stories that grasp your attention and emotions. I've been stuck on and addicted to Colter for a while now, I still can not get enough of this guy, he blew my mind and I'm in love with his music.
