Senecio macroglossus (wax ivy) variegata care and propagation (with updates)

- The Senecio macroglossus is most commonly known as the wax ivy, and it is more often than not sold as the variegated version. This is a very inexpensive and common trailing plant that can get huge very quickly. I would consider this a succulent due to its thick leaves (also its in the Senecio genus yo…). They are very easy to care for, making it suitable for beginners (and for gifting). I share with you the care tips, and as usual I propagate this in water and in soil (with a few months update in the end.

"Do not judge me, everyone has mealy bugs." Thank you. I needed to hear this and see how casual you are about it. Every time I get pests I have a major anxiety attack over it. Thank you so much.
Hehe we have to accept them as a part of our ecosystem, and trust our methods in controlling them to minimal levels. Its unrealistic to hit zero with mealy bugs.

FINALLY FINALLY wax ivy is the most underrated houseplant ever!!
edit: and yes they are very fast growing they could be invasive
i have had mine for 3 years now and i have tons and tons of pots of them lol but i love them (also they are quite poisonous so careful getting the sap in your mouth or eyes it gave ma a migraine quite a few times)
I recently purchased this plant, so perfect timing on the care video!🙏🏼🌱
Perfect timing. I just added this to my wishlist and been looking for it.
Thanks Shaun, love the creepy voice at the end. You made me confident in cutting up my plants to propagate, I now have shared a lot of my plants family and friends.
I appreciate your videos so much. Because of you I'm not afraid to experiment with my plants and quite successfully. I enjoy watching.
Yaye. We have to kill a few to learn. Its part of the process 😀
I just got one today & already started propagating 🌿
I love your excitement and enthusiasm! A common quality of a true plant person 👌🏻 I love it! Your plants are beautiful!
Thank youu
Perfect timing, I just bought a pot of ivy. Terima kasih tutorialnya.
Vary nice plans they all so beautiful and amazing 🍃🍃🙄
Woow I just buy this plant ...and know I got to know about it caring ... Thank you so much it was soo helpful to me
😀😀
Beautiful plant! My green one thrives in full light.
Whoaaa interesting. I will propagate and try a pot in full sun too!
I have all 3 types, the internally variegated, the externally variegated & the solid green. They’re all beautiful. But the solid green one is definitely my favorite
Edit - the leaves will root but they don’t grow into a plant. I did a test with about 20 leaves. So I’m fairly confident about that
Whoaaaa I havent seen the internally variegated one!
Thanks for the share about the leaves propagation.
I just purchased this plant, they labeled it German Ivy. Thank you for all the information, I love your video. I'm a brand new subscriber
🙏🏽😀
I love that you featured this plant, it's not Instagram famous but I love it, such an easy care plant. One thing to pay attention to is when it seeds...the seeds get airborne like dandelions so another reason why they can be a noxious weed if living outdoors.
I have the lime variegated one and the dark green variegated one, would also love the all green variety but hasn't really made a presence in Australia. I might try get my dark green to revert if I can't find it.
Whoaaaa thanks for the knowledge! Interesting about the seeds!
I found my all green variant at bunnings mislabelled as an english ivy. You might get lucky
@@ashleighweisse7279 thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely be paying closer attention in the English Ivy sections from now on.
I love mine! Mine are magenta/white/green on the leaves. 🥰
Fave vlogger!!!
🙈
i have one that I've kept in an enclosed pickle jar(jarrarium reddit experiment) outside under a chair. Its quite beautiful with the reddish purple edges. I haven't watered it since the beginning. You just reminded me to go check on it.
“Everybody’s got mealy bugs” 😆 I love your videos!!
😅😅
Love the crazy music friend 😂
I love this plant .. particularly non variegated one .. resemble english ivy without headache of spider mites ..
Haha yesss
You made me laugh when you said the mealy bugs are so happy & don’t Judge me!!! I recently got a senecio mikanoides says silver heart it has the same pink stems as this one
This may be the one ivy I don't murder! * Adds to the wish list, blames you for the list getting longer *
Missing the loooooooooong videos!!!
Hi Sean! I'm a fan from the Philippines. Please give us Monstera Dubia care tips and propagation🙏🙏🤗🤗🤣🤣
Yay, I get another chance to watch the ad 😅 wishing you the best of the best 🥰
I had an iv in my geckos terrarium and it wants to die. I took it out and stuck the tiny cutting in my greenhouse, then I found a huge one at Walmart for $2.96 🤣 I'm not going to buy it. I get easily attached 😅
😅😅
What a deep voice you have at the end of this video hehehehe
😅😅
Great video on one of my favourite plants.
It's very hard to get here in Germany, I had to order the green variety from Poland and the variegated one from France. But it grows beautifully and makes me very happy ^_^
They are quite stress free plants, always giving us baby leaves everyday 😀
@@onlyplants Agreed! And the leaf shape as well as the varigation just constantly amazes me. I was very happy to see you mention S. macroglossus in a previous tour and this video is even better :D
They can take full sun. They just grow tinier leaves that are yellow colored. They become lush instead of trailing
Niceeee thanks for the share
Thanks for the tips.. I always end up killing these. Either over or underwatering them.
Oo they are quite forgiving in my experience. Try to increase light and it will be difficult to overwater
hahahaaaa!! LOVE your new deep creepy voice
I love this plant! I got mine and didn’t repot right away and it almost died. I changed the soil put her in a brighter area and she’s loving life. 🥰
Now I’m off to see if I can buy an all green one!!!! Etsy here I come. 😂
I got the solid green one off Etsy. It’s my favorite of the 3 varieties
@@WoodlandT I have the variegated abs know about the all green what is the third verity?
Good info. I have this plant and I too get creamish leaves.I am trying to propagate with leaves. If successful will post.
Ooo let me know pls
😍
I don't think I've ever seen an all green wax ivy... I think I like it better also!!! I had no idea they bloomed!!!! I just might have to keep my eyes out for this plant!
When you cut the full white branch it hurt a little. Send me those!
Thanks for the video
🙈🙈
🌿👌
💚
We need a video exclusively with butch sean 😌😂😂
Haha
Hi , I recently purchased 3 different kinds of ivy. They are so beautiful. Will these trail in the backyard wall if put them directly to the soil?
They should trail nicely. They are viners and will clamor over each other
I've been struggling with my wax ivy and there's not much helpful info I can find because this plant is not that famous and is often mislabelled as English ivy. I think now I know what to do with it after seeing this video. :-)
Good luck! Its easy once you get the hang of it
Sean, you said these are prone to spider mites.
Please advise how will you act in this case. Thank you.
Neem oil spray, also I use carbofuran 😅 the later is banned in some countries
🇿🇦😍😍we grow them outside all year round and they are creepy once they attach to the wall they grow like weed
Yeah I can imagine them being quite invasive 😅
I AM NOT HERE BC I WAS JUST BINGE WATCHING, I'm JUST REALLY EARLY 👀👀👀 lol
😅
🤣🤣🤣 You don't need the butch voice! Apparently some studies show a slower talking speed and a little deeper voice makes one (male and female) more likeable and convincing, but I agree: you sound too serious and like a criminal. You just do you, Sean! 👌
Apparently the play speed diminished?
Love this plant and I am hoping to find one; it's not popular here (Belgium, Europe).
I love this plant. have 3 outside. all get a. bit more sun than necessary and may be a bit bleached but they’re doing great otherwise ( and do get the pink tinge around the edges!) PS- what’s the name of whatever you used for mealy bugs-i hear “floradon”?
Furadan 😀 its a brand but the component is carbofuran
Hi please help! my wax Ivy leave is becoming soft , I watered it once a week and give it near south window sometimes I use growth light, what should I do?
It might be underwatered 😌 do water them as soon as you feel the soil dry out halfway down the pot.
Haha, I thought you were using a voice double at the end of the video.
hey hey 👋 not sure if you have a commitment already but I have 2 leafs that are growing atvthe moment.
😀😀
You bought what to make the holes in the pots ?? & where do u get that wire for it ?
Soldering iron for poking holes. Also they sell these wires readily online here, I got mine on tokopedia randomly 😅
I killed this 5 times n other English ivy around 6 times ... So beside the hoya serial killer I'm also an ivy serial killer too ... They were died of too much sunlight, over watering or underwatering or compli ation of all of those reasons. Right now I just bought another green English ivy . It has been a week I propagate a few cuttings in water meanwhile the mother plant started to show brown leaves on some of the leaves n baby leaves. I got many advice to place it in bright indirect light, shady place even under paranetn watering just when the soil dries out or even just splash every day from some utubers, ig ppl or the sellers in n out of Indonesia ... Please help me what's wrong with my care ? Hoping u can make a video about English ivy variegated or not. This plant is so beautiful that has caught my heart since I was in the elementary school when watching a movie, secret garden.
I was at a plant place this weekend and a was wondering what the difference between this plant you are talking about and wax leaf German Ivy Senecio mikaniodes? TY!
Hello I may have already answered your question on IG… but the later is a different species is in the same genus. The care and propagation should be quite similar.
Thank you!
hahaha the ending is probably in slow motion, I kind of see it slowed down a little.. that makes sense now with your voice :))
Haha I tend to accidentally record slow-motion setting 😅
@@onlyplants I remember it just like it was yesterday - I think it was your hose down plants video, the scene you sound like an alien.. hahaha loved it.
Do you know how to save dying wax ivy? Not much information I could obtain from the internet. The guides are mostly for the actual English ivy. I live in Jakarta too.
Best way is to propagate and start over. Leaving behind a few nodes and try to get the roots to recover
@@onlyplants Thanks. I’m gonna see what I can do.
Praying that I won't kill mine 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩 txs for the video !
i’ve been growing one of these in my room since december and it’s been growing very well and fast, but around a month ago my mom had dropped it and most of the leaves on the long vines had fallen off. since then i have not seen growth length wise and any new stem growth where the leaves had fallen off, the only growth i have seen is from the leaves that have survived sprouting new stems. i would really appreciate some advice, i am completely lost
Your best bet is to prune it very close to the base, leaving only a few nodes. They new vines will appear there.
Send photos on Instagram DM too as I cannot imagine what it looks like now
May I ask,how about when the new leaf became so small and all of them became kinky
The new leaves start small and expand in size usually. If they dont expand then you may be under fertilizing it, or perhaps its not getting optimal lighting condition 😀
I have the green one. Just find it got aphids 😭 I'm so terrified of pest. Can't be as calm as you with those nasty pest. Lol I read somewhere says that those wax Ivy are not prone to pest.... I guess it's not.
What did you use to kill the mealy bugs? Thanks
Hello I have a video titled “pest control” and also “mealy bugs” with good visuals and explanations 😀 hope they can help
Hello..
Could you please 🙏make a video how to care and propogate variegated umbrella plant thank you🤗🤗
Yeappp that video is already filmed waiting for release date! 😀 the babies are so cute!
Yey thank you so much i can't wait for this one..
Im only new to your channel but i think i already watch all your videos☺
Can I do this in winter inside the house?
Yes you can, if your light is low, supplement it with artificial light. Any light works, no need growlights specifically for plants.
@@onlyplants thanks
Mine does fine in full sun
Whoaaaa interesting… maybe I can adapt them…
🙏🤣🥰
You have a wall of ficus pumila😮🙂😀
Is that what they are... haha they rain down fungus from above and is my number one source of plant death
@@onlyplants 😂
Hm, isn't the voice a notch slower than usual? That would explain the lower pitch...
Haha yes I may have filmed it in slow motion mode by accident
That voice!
😆
I killed mine but I have a green form that is thriving.
6:00 i can't believe you just put that in the pot with the mealy bugs without even dumping out the infested soil 😭
Mealy bugs are easy to care for lol. After my pest control days they are gone
@@onlyplants Hey Shaun....Next time you come across pests can you show them slowly and up close? Looked more like perlite to me😱.Thank you💚🌱
Mine got slimy and rotted off
😅😅 too much water perhaps, or maybe too low light. Or a combo of these two. Dont give up, try again 😀
that voice killed me
😅😅
Sean : this is an easygoing plant
Me: i killed one already 🙄
Your voice at the end 😂😂😂
Sexy no?
@@onlyplants absolutely!!
@@onlyplants I have just bought this plant I am excited to see how much it grows. Thank you for your advice.
Lol his channel name is “only plants.” I wonder if he thought of that because he’s a subscriber on only fans 🤣🤣
Haha yes its reference to onlyfans lol
@@onlyplants lol!! I was cracking up yesterday. Awesome channel name!!
I hate english ivy!! can we just stop with that and grow these senecio instead? I'm just salty because I rent and someone let this ivy completely take over my back yard :( i don't know if I have the strength to fight it...
Hahaha just release some spider mites on them 🙈
