I have 35 caladium species and 90% of them live under direct sun and rain. You will experience some sunburnt leaves at first but be patient and the new growth will adjust. Their colors become super vibrant especially those that have any pink or red on them. Also they become much less leggy. In my experience, the size and amount of leaves depends on the size of the bulb and not the amount of roots so try not to chop the bulbs up too tiny unless you don’t mind having tiny new shoots. Also, if you want the leaves to grow bigger faster, you will need to only keep max 2 leaves at a time until you reach your desired size. Caladiums are heavy feeders so I give them fishmeal. And yes, you should wear gloves when handling “cut up” caladium bulbs. Greetings from Malaysia
Hi may I know what soil mix you use for your outdoors caladium survive this monsoon season in malaysia? It keeps raining nowadays and my caladiums tend to have root rots and bulbs.
@@sitisarahmohdtauhed3872 I use something that looks quite similar to Sean's forest floor potting mix for all my caladiums but I also add in some raw rice hulls as well. There was a real craze on them here in Thailand last year, mine were all dug up from my garden when I went away 😢 a year earlier they had been basically been growing wild in my area. Luckily the plant thrives missed some small bulbs and a few small ones have popped back up in my garden 😁
Fantastic video! I didn't catch what your text box said about doing something protective to the cut tubers. It said you didn't know about doing that prior to your surgery session. It was to help the plant recover from its wounds to the tuber after division. Thank you for such a great educational video. You're an amazing teacher.
I boughtba beautiful caladium from a home goods store and it was stunning when I got it. I repotted it on the patio because the plant instructions said "full sun," and "outdoor," but the thing completely scorched and died. I dissected the plant to see if there was any living material and found little yellow balls while one still had a tiny semblance of an eye. I repotted that little yellow ball per your instructions and I'm hoping I can rescue it.
It should come back to life. Now caladiums should be able to handle full sun, but they cannot take sudden transitions - as with every plant. If it was grown in shade it might be wise to move slowly over a few months to full sun
Definetly give your indoor Caladium morning or late afternoon Sun. What hurts them most is dry air in most climates. There are cheap meters indicating temperature and air moisture, get one, and adjust a humidifier to trigger if the % falls below 40%. It dosen't have to be extremely acurate. You just don't want much below 40%. Oh and above 50% in a house for long periods of time isn't good. Promotes molds and critters. You don't want that inside your house. So aim for 40%-50%. Propagation by cutting the bulb is easier at the end of the rest period, because you can cut them in sections, let the cut dry for a week, then plant them. ( Growers in the wet, warm tropics might not have a rest period though, so do like Sean if that's your case. )
I absolutely adore caladiums. You're right, they're heavy feeders. Can try giving them fishmeal fertilizer. They make the leaves grow huge! Hilo beauty leaves can grow huge! If you accidentally remove a healthy leaf from the mother plant, check the end of the leaf stalk. If it has some ' bulby ' material, plant the leaf back into the soil. You may have a small leaf growing soon.
I've stuck it into a colocasia pot once, another time into my water lily pot. Both times successfully revived the "accidentally broken" stalk. Smear a bit of root hormone on them just in case.
Seeing that you have quite a bit of insects and caterpillars attacking the foliage, maybe you can try sprinkle a little ceylon cinnamon power, pests don't the the smell and the powder works as a fungicide as well as encouraging root growth. Its cheap and good.
I usually grow a few bulbs each summer in wi.and in the past have thrown them away at the end of summer.last year I decided to keep them along with begonias. It will be interesting to see if I stores them correctly and they come back.If they do maybe next year they will be big enough to seperate.

First of all I would rule out spidermites as a possibility. And then, you might not let the plant dry out too much. But in an indoor setting you also dont want them to sit in water (they love sitting in water when placed outside with optimal airflow etc…) they also do go dormant so perhaps yours is about to fall asleep for a bit
hello Sean, My name is Alona I tried to propagate caladium for the first time from bulbs. The bulb has roots and new buds came out and their tip is dark, and I dont know if it normal...it doesnt look ok. Can I send you a picture? Thank you
wow. they're so hard to buy where I am (Perth, Western Australia). they'd sell like hotcakes. I also cant seem to keep them alive yet. Very hot here. I'm not giving up tho as they are beautiful. Your plants are gorgeous!
I actually feel like they can do well in Australia… they can go dormant in mild winters and take full sun and heat. They have to always sit in water during growing season though.
My poor caladium has floppy leaves -- the big ones can't hold themselves up and arc over; for the biggest leaves, then the stems break. It was fine the first week I had it, then the flopping started. I thought maybe the pot was too small, needed more root room, and so replanted, but that didn't help. It was in a high sun area; moved it to less sun. I don't think I'm overwatering or underwatering -- all my other guys, big and small are fine --- HELP! Thanks!
They love direct light, some like full sun but to be on the safe side you can just place it where it gets direct morning or evening light. You can try to create a crutch for it to lean on. Sometimes the leaves can be too heavy for it 😅 and perhaps consider planting it slightly deeper. Also do fertilize them so they have stronger stems or leaves. I find them to be slightly heavy feeders. And they love a lot of moisture and can drink a lot of water when conditions are favorable for them. To be safe, give it very airy potting media that never dries out completely
@@onlyplants Thank you so much for this detailed answer. I fertilized and removed the great big (sadly) fallen leaves and the rest seem to be doing ok now -- maybe they were just having a rough adjustment period.
Hmmm not fully understanding the question but growing eyes do exist already on the bulb. Think of a potato, if you look closely you will actually see random growing eyes all around it. You will need this existing growing eye to sprout a plant. But Im not sure where exactly new growing eyes form on these 😀
I just bought mine a few days ago, and it's not doing well. I keep her near my window and it get a lot of indirect sunlight, specially in the morning, but still the leavs seems like when u let your salad out of the fridge. Is it suffering bc it's too hot? Is it bc it's a different clima from where I bought it? It was already watered when I got it, and i fear they gave it too much water
It might be stressed from sudden change in environment. Light Air movement seem to make them very happy, so if your air is stale/stiff while its also hot that might be a problem.
Funny you say it's nearly impossible to kill. So that 1% chance of killing a Caladium is probably me, I have no idea why, one day it's fine then the next, all it's stalks seem drippy & mushy. But I really love having one so everytime that I get a chance to buy one again, I buy..... Again, wish me luck
mine after propagating died instantly (or so i assume). Its all wilted, brown and im not sure why... i added much water and well drained soil, no direct sunlight and well... im not sure what i did wrong :/. Rip to my Carolyn Whorton.
@@onlyplants Yes you can, but it depends on the length of the stem. As long as you have a little bit of thickness at the bottom of the leaf stem, you may be successful. They kind of behave like pilea peperomioides, you know how you need a little of the main stem at the bottom of the leaf if you don't like doing leaf cuttings and still want to propogate? It's like that. I have a "Heart and Soul" leaf on a chunky stem, rooting in a jar on my kitchen table at the moment. She is in with some spider plant babies and is putting off roots like crazy. This is my first attempt, so I don't know if she will grow a corm, or tuber like zz plant cuttings do, or if she will even survive, but I'm going to try.
Why you name them 'no luck' ?😂 aren't they white queen ? And the white christmas (cmiiw) is cute, but I prefer moonlight ones.. Just studying about some foliage plantation and just know that there are florida clown caladiums outside my parents' house, they're so cute with their red & white speckles on their lime green foliages ❤️
@@onlyplants I always grow my caladiums in terracotta. As a matter of fact, I over-winter them in the pot they grow in. I knock off the watering at the end of the summer, let them go dormant and store the pot inside for the winter (I live in the US, zone 6). In the spring, I resume watering. As long as the soil is kept dry, the bulbs generally don't rot and stay firm in the soil, but amazingly, I have lightly watered the spider plants that live in the pot with them, just to prevent them from dying completely over the winter, and most of the caladiums bulbs survive to sprout again in the spring, along with the spider plants! I know, its crazy, but it can be done successfully. Just watch your water.
Theres only 1 season in Indonesia 😅 but you can propagate at anytime anywhere provided you can give it warmth and humidity. A prop box will let you propagate any time of the year
Maybe too much water shock. I would slowly introduce them to water. Or another possibility may be insufficient energy/nutrients stored from the dormant bits.

Mine died quickly in the sun. But I live in a very dry, hot climate. I am trying to revive them now
Could be due to a sudden change in environment. They do bounce back from nothing though.

wow. they're so hard to buy where I am (Perth, Western Australia). they'd sell like hotcakes. I also cant seem to keep them alive yet. Very hot here. I'm not giving up tho as they are beautiful. Your plants are gorgeous!
I actually feel like they can do well in Australia… they can go dormant in mild winters and take full sun and heat. They have to always sit in water during growing season though.
@@onlyplants ohh ok. I'll give the more water a go. ty :)
So when it dries up around the bulb does that mean more eyes will grow on the side where you originally cut?
Hmmm not fully understanding the question but growing eyes do exist already on the bulb. Think of a potato, if you look closely you will actually see random growing eyes all around it. You will need this existing growing eye to sprout a plant. But Im not sure where exactly new growing eyes form on these 😀
If your hand/is itchi from bulb caladium ..you can put vinegar to your hand/fingers..
Thank you
Excellent 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I think the cut ones are called nodes
Yess 😀
I just bought mine a few days ago, and it's not doing well. I keep her near my window and it get a lot of indirect sunlight, specially in the morning, but still the leavs seems like when u let your salad out of the fridge. Is it suffering bc it's too hot? Is it bc it's a different clima from where I bought it? It was already watered when I got it, and i fear they gave it too much water
It might be stressed from sudden change in environment. Light Air movement seem to make them very happy, so if your air is stale/stiff while its also hot that might be a problem.
@@onlyplants thank you so much for the reply! I putted it close to a grow light and created some breeze with a ventilator facing the wall
How do you tell the difference between a growing eye and the start of a new root?
Hmmm I dont know how to lol but usually its the eye if you can see a little nub. Roots can grow from anywhere
Awesome
Thank you ❤️
separate. My favorite is gingerland
I think they're classified as tubers. See, you made an analogy to potatoes. :)
😀😀
How do i prune off leafs do i cut the “stem” or just the leaf
I would cut the stem at the base 😀
Caladium bicolor (Aiton) Vent. {heart of Jesus} ? Just purchased one 30 minutes ago from down the road.
Thank youu
Mine Thriving at 12 noon - 5 pm exposed to direct sunlight
Sweet. They love more sun than people think
Can you update if all the pieces grew
Im not familiar with prices of these unfortunately but they have been stable in my environment. They are considered cheap and accessible here.
Over here that green and pink cultivar is called “Tapestry”
😀
Funny you say it's nearly impossible to kill. So that 1% chance of killing a Caladium is probably me, I have no idea why, one day it's fine then the next, all it's stalks seem drippy & mushy. But I really love having one so everytime that I get a chance to buy one again, I buy..... Again, wish me luck
Haha try my care tips. especially the light and watering
I will, thankyou, also I would love to see a propagation & care video on purple oxalis triangularis,. Take care
mine after propagating died instantly (or so i assume). Its all wilted, brown and im not sure why... i added much water and well drained soil, no direct sunlight and well... im not sure what i did wrong :/. Rip to my Carolyn Whorton.
Oh it should still be able to come bacj as long as the tuber is solid and firm
Hahaha your caladium is getting even with you for cutting it up.
Can I buy some ? Would you posted to uk?
Hello Ive closed down my nursery and shop 🙌🏽
What kind of fungicide do you use?
The brand is antracol or dithane. Both are equally good
I believe this csladium is called tapestry
Woooh interesting. I googled and it does look similar. I bought this as an all red caladium actually but it morphed into this lol
@@onlyplants i thought it was Carolyn Wharton at first glance, but maybe the name is interchangeable?
Can u put. The stem if it snaps off in water and grow roots??
I dont think sooo. You need part of the tuber with a growing bud on it to propagate. But I could be very wrong 😀
Thanks for this share 😀❤️
I would buy them from you!
🙈🙈
Isn’t Hilo beauty an Alocasia?
Last I checked it was classified to a caladium… I could be wrong though
would they do well in terracotta? i’m so scared to cut up my baby 😭
They love moisture too much to be in terracotta. You can wait for it to mature… and then find the little bulblets in the soil to propagate.
I grow mine in terracotta every year. Just plant in a general purpose potting mix that retains moisture.
Just watch your water.
what season do you propagate?
Theres only 1 season in Indonesia 😅 but you can propagate at anytime anywhere provided you can give it warmth and humidity. A prop box will let you propagate any time of the year
what fungicide do you use?
2 brands - antracol or dithane.
Theres not much difference between them in my opinion.
Caladiums produce corms instead of bulbs.
😀😀
im in love
❤️❤️
All of mine rotted when trying to take them out of dormancy except for a few 😞
Maybe too much water shock. I would slowly introduce them to water. Or another possibility may be insufficient energy/nutrients stored from the dormant bits.
@@onlyplants Probably! I put them in terra cotta and inside containers as greenhouses, so they probably stayed too moist.
8:22 i trust you
😀😀
Do you have enemies Sean? 🌷💚🙃
lol
Haha Im sure everyone has enemies no? at least one. Haha
