great video, i replaced the tranny 2 weeks ago, i separated and dropped it after removing the sub frame, i dont have an engine hoist to lift, it was pretty easy, but a few days ago i was rotating tires and the car shifted, the jack moving and breaking into the bottom of the engine, its ruined, i went to the junkyard and found the car was still there, the car that i had taken the tranny from, i took the engine and am trying to replace it, i want to take it off in the same way, i already disconnected everything up top, i didnt need to disconnect the ac lines from the compressor, i just left the compressor resting where the radiator sits, am going to drop the subframe in the morning, are there any complications to doing it this way? the engine didnt come with the electric motor so it doesnt have the electric 3 prong connection, i dont know if separating the engine and tranny will give it enough clearance to drop, i dont thing that connector is removeable, unless im missing something, if you can shed some advice id appreciate it, thanks in advance

      Thank you.
Sorry to hear about your engine
It’s good to know that the tranny can be dropped alone. To be honest it was my first time replacing a hybrid engine. It was pretty tight to get the engine alone. That’s why we removed the engine and tranny together. I would recommend dropping engine and tranny together.
And also you said that your engine didn’t come with a IMA motor assembly. So that means you have use your old IMA motor from the ruined engine. But there is a special tool available to remove and install the IMA motor assembly without damaging anything. But I heard people have done it without the special tool. It might be risky. Our engine came with the IMA motor so we were lucky on that part.
I hope, my advice helped. But please let me know how you did it. 🙏

@@thequickautolook thanks for the reply, so I had a light bulb go off in my head when I tried separating the ima motor from the broken engine, I have the 12 point 17mm but it's really hard to remove the bolts, with the engine out the shaft turns and the bolts don't have allot of head so they slip off, don't want to strip the bolts, then I realized the oil pan is removable, I have another 08 civic hybrid with over 354k miles, bad engine, it overheats with bad head gasket, my thought was take that oil pan and put it on my cracked engine on the other hybrid and the engine that I initially bought for the the other hybrid can still go on it, just bad luck that my good running one was damaged. Problem is I can't separate the broken oil pan, I removed all bolts and it cracks open on 1 side but the side close to the ima motor is sealed tight, I looked at the engine that I have without the ima motor to see if I could see any bolts on the inside of the ima housing but there's none, not sure if I have to pry it really hard or what, I'm close to saving me time and money by salvaging the original engine and keeping the other engine for the other civic, if you think you have any insight I'd appreciate it, on your video you show removing the ima motor quite easily, what's wrong with doing it that way? 6 12 point bolts hold it on, im struggling to remove them but if there's high possibility of damage I can hold of, thanks in advance, and yes dropping the tranny is much faster if you drop the sub frame, disconnect the 4steering plugs, mark the steering wheel shaft before dropping the sub frame, disconnect the gear selector up top along with the sensors, and remove the 3 motor mount nuts, slowly dropping with a jack, just need the car high enough to clear the driver side wheel well,, need to take off the axle anyway so you'll have space,

It’s good to know that you can get away with replacing just the oil pan on your old engine. I looked up the labour time for a 2008 civic hybrid’s oil pan replacement. It was around 5hrs. Removal procedure said remove subframe, remove dipstick tube, remove rear mount, a bracket near tranny, 10 mils holding the pan and 2 bottom 17 mils securing the tranny to the engine. And pry the pan off. That’s what the service manual pretty much say. Since you have the ruined engine separated from the tranny it should be really held on by those 10 mils. I believe it’s just really held on by the liquid gasket.
I was removing the IMA motor assembly on the old engine to show the rear main seal leak. So I didn’t care about damaging anything on it because I was going to throw away the old engine and the IMA motor. I used a breaker bar and a 19mm on crank pulley and a 1/2 Milwaukee high torque impact gun to get those 12 point bolts. When you remove those 12 point bolts the center piece is a strong magnet called the rotor get attached to the windings around it. The magnetic force would cause damage to rotor magnets and those windings around it. All I’m trying say that you have to keep that piece centred when removing it. I have read it on forum that people have done it without the special tool. But I’m not 100% sure about how that would go.
I would highly recommend, try replacing the oil pan and get your civic back on the road.
I found this video helpful about understanding the IMA motor assembly removal and install procedure. This is for 1st generation hybrid. But it’s similar procedure and it might be helpful to understand better about what I’m trying to say. Just type in UA-cam (Honda ima hybrids part 3). It’s a 31:20 mins video.
Thank you 🙏 I hope I made sense to you. Let me know how it goes.
