My wife has a 2013 Civic hybrid with 200,000 miles. It's only ever needed oil changes, brakes and the ac compressor died around 170,000 miles. It always delivers more than 40mpg. Fantastic car.
My neighbor has a Honda Odyssey ~180k, he doesn't like that it's breaking down all the time with less than 200K. I just had to go rescue him when his water pump blew up... in my Toyota -w lotus V6- 207K.
I have a 2017 Honda Accord hybrid and am amazed by the system (212hp/232tq). I get 50's around town and mid/low 40's on the hwy, and can even do short trips in all EV mode. The build quality is amazing (built in Japan) ,and comfort is top notch in my opinion.
I did buy my 07 Civic Hybrid new. I still have it and it runs well. Way back in 2007 there were numerous incentives to get a hybrid in Canada. No provincial sales tax, Federal Sales tax rebate, Scrap-it program where you could get $1000-$2000 dollar rebate on a hybrid by trading in an older car that had been insured for the last 6 months or failed its emissions test. The original software was better than the updates which stole 15-20% of the fuel economy to extend battery life of the hybrid pack. You can get rebuilt packs for under $1000 and $2000 for new battery cell ones. The other nice thing is the Civic Hybrid holds the road like any Honda Civic, Its not a rickety underweight gocart like the early Prius and Insights.
Needed a hybrid battery replacement after only 6 years and after reprogramming my car buy Honda to save the battery. I only gets 38 miles per gallon now. Hardly better than a normal combustion engine. Is there a way to roll back the software to the older version so I can improve my gas mileage again?
I got a 2013 Civic Hybrid, currently at 107,000 miles. Bought it 3 years ago. Never had any problems. Just been maintaining oil changes, I recently replaced the transmission fluid cause I'm always afraid of CVTs going bad but I've never heard of the civics CVTs going bad. Going up hill kinda sucks but I love the engine braking going down hill. Drove from TN to NM, TN to PA, and a couple times to FL. A very reliable car so far!
I've had my 07 Civic hybrid for just over 11 years, it had around 35k miles on it when u purchased it, I've done all the oil changes, front brake pads twice (85k original, and again at 198k, along with new rotors). I did have o2 sensors replaced at around 191k, along with my original plugs by a shop back in January as I had a CEL showing, and in NYS it won't pass inspection. But that's about it. Love this car, and although it started rusting a couple years ago, I can't see any reason to get rid of it.
My 2000 Honda Civic has 502,000 miles. Original engine, original transmission...can’t believe how reliable it is and all I do is dump a ton of oil in it
In fact the civic hybrid does have a starter motor that is only used when the battery and electric motor are unable to start the engine. Also, under some circumstances, the IMA system can keep the car's speed on electricity only. Proud owner of a 2009 civic hybrid almost 200k and still going strong.
That look kitty gives you afterwards, is kitty thinking "Ok you ring that bell one more time & I'll head straight to the bath room, rev up my claws on the toilet paper roll and unravel the whole damn thing human."
Yep. I drive a 2006 Honda Civic hybrid ( looks just like the 2011) and I have had ZERO repairs in 15 years! Still on the original brake pads! For many of the reasons Scotty states- I went with the Civic Hybrid over the Prius. ( There are some other reasons as well). The main negative of the car for me is the road noise which is loud. But what to do-- a car that costs zero, gets 48 MPG and never leaves me stranded. About 165,000 miles on mine. Good to see this one at 235,000. I did buy mine new at an OTD price of 22,000- high back then. But by now that works out to $122/month over time, although paid off long ago.
I have the same make and model car as you but the battery pack went out after only 6 years and got replaced by the dealer for free. Now the car only gets about 40 miles per gallon. So I think they put in a weaker battery pack. I can't complain too much because I bought it used for 3,000 and it's been running perfectly except for the replacement of an old worn out battery and a worn out tires. Didn't notice the road noise being that loud.
There was a class action lawsuit against Honda for this generation of Honda Civic Hybrids for a good reason. I owned one and would not recommend it. My MPG went from about 50 to the upper 30s as the battery degraded. Acceleration was terrible at the end (little battery power means little assist available). Everything from this point on is based upon what I read, Honda's design over stressed the hybrid battery, which caused them to start to fail. Since Honda did not want to replace the batteries, they reprogrammed the engine to save the batteries, which ruined the MPG.
I’m a Honda Civic guy,no cars can beat the miles per gallon they go,except if you drive a hybrid one. I want to meet Scotty,he reminds me of my mechanic, honest with everything he does… Thanks for the video.👍👏👏👏👏👏🙏
with the top spot taken by Honda. Only one in every 344 Honda owners have had engine trouble, with second-placed rival Toyota notching up just one in 171.
Actually, it can run on electric only for brief periods of time. The motor is directly attached to the flywheel so it isn't very efficient because the motor has to push the rotating mass of the engine around too, but it can shut the valves and turn off fuel injection for brief periods of time with very low load. Usuaully when I come home from a long day driving this car, I go around 19 mph in my neighborhood and drive the last few hundred feet on battery only, until the engine has to take over again to get it up the sloped driveway where I live. xD
I just snagged a 2020 Insight and I love it. Lot of city driving where I am now and I get between 55 and 60 MPG. My previous car (2013 Dodge Dart) not only had tons of electrical issues but I was getting around 28 MPG. I haven't pushed it for a full tank yet but I'm averaging 300 miles on about 4.5 - 5 gallons of gas (total tank is 10.6 gallons IIRC). I still think Hybrids are under utilized overall as an option. There are more failure points but if the hybrid side of my Insight dies I can still drive it just on the regular combustion engine. I'm not a "car guy" but I do follow a lot of Scotty's Videos (I searched the channel for this one just today) because the videos on the channel are just packed with great info.
What can I say about a man, that’s on vacation and still working? He’s just awesome! I thought I knew a lot about cars, until I fell in Scotty’s Videos. I now make my technician watch Scotty’s videos before they fix my car. Lol!
My dad 2016 Honda Odyssey drive perfect after 4 years of buying new took it to many road trips hopefully it hit 72k to 75k miles while driving to Florida
In my case...zero. Like Scotty says, this particular model, which I own, is built as an "assist." You must use a very thin oil (0W20). There has been some controversy over the Hybrid Battery Pack and a Honda software update used to cover up battery failures. I never took that update and had my battery pack replaced under warranty at no cost. Honda DID get in trouble though in a class action lawsuit and I got a check for $200 in some sort of settlement. If someone needed to get a replacement hybrid battery pack the key would be to visit with bumblebee batteries that builds better than OEM ones with 3 year warranties or remans with a one year warranty for about 1200-1500.
I owned six different first generation Prius. Bought new 2001, traded to dealer for new 2002. Drove that 219k miles & at about 105k replaced a wheel bearing & a water pump. Found a 2002 still in warranty, bought it & sold mine. Repeated that three more times. No other repairs. Never had to replace brake pads due to regen braking! Always 40 to 45 mpg. Most reliable & economical cars I’ve had!
James Hunt: So you can count! You win the fur-lined piss pot! My iPad battery was dying so I did not get to talk about the 2001 I bought in Australia & drove for a year. It was great, except for accidental meeting with an emu!
I got the 2005 Honda Accord hybrid with 233k miles made in Japan not America and I used everyday for delivering putting 100+ miles a day. These cars were really smart made.
I had the same year in a regular civic coupe with the space ship gauge package. The Automatic in it shifted weird from day one but always worked. The only problem I had was a cv joint going out at around 30,000 miles but they fixed it under warrenty. Overall a good reliable car, while not overly powerful.
I drive one of these. Scotty is right - best car I ever had😂👍 They even run purely electric in city traffic for short distances, they even close the engines valves via iVtec to stop pumping losses when doing so. Very well engineered car - greetings from Germany
The Prius power split device isn't the same as a CVT. It has the same end result to someone driving the car, but it works in a completely different way. (It doesn't have any belts, it's completely electronic, and it's maintenance free.)
I have to disagree, at least with my 2007 civic hybrid. It’s dangerously slow, the interior is falling apart. The hybrid batteries have problems so Honda made it so it doesn’t use the hybrid very much, which makes it slow and get just “ok” gas mileage.
Don't think, just buy. I owned CR-Z for 10 years and traded in 2 months ago with tears on my eyes just because I needed a bigger car. All I did for maintenance is just fluids and tire change. Changed the 12v battery after 110k km (!) The IMA battery was still in perfect condition. No issues with engine or transmission. And if you go for the MT, you'd never regret. Amen. ✌️
@@iurkoff ever since I’ve watched Scotty I’ve had a 04 Toyota Corolla. 154,000 kms and it’s starting to fall apart 😅 so Toyota’s left a bad taste in my mouth, so I’m gonna try Honda: reckon I’m defo getting a crz now
@@RaynMedia My CR-Z's mileage was 220k when I sold it. Before I had Fit hybrid (same IMA system) - also an extremely reliable car with zero issue. All JDM tho.
Come on Scotty , Toyota Hybrid is full hybrid , their transmission as CVT is just to classify easier Yes ,Toyota hybrid can't be standard transmission But hand down Toyota , Hybrid is much more reliable .Honda Hybrid is just mild hybrid . Uber and yellow cabs drivers will agree with me.
Agree Scotty. My 2006 Mk8 Civic just keeps going and going. Joy to drive too. Every time its tested, it just sails through. No leasing. I own it. Cheap motoring.
On my third hybrid civic. 2093 sold at 284,000 miles ran great, sold it bought 2007. Sold that at 278,009 miles . Consistently got 52 mpg on the 03 and 07 same motor.. 1.3. Sold the 07 bought a 2012. At 122,000 and running strong. Only repair out of all 3 was a rear wheel bearing on the 07 about 6 months before I sold it.
2012 Honda Accord SE with over 💯 k miles checking in. Will buy another Honda. Had a toyota Yaris before that as my daily commuter no room for traveling, no power, road noise but gas mileage was very good and only had to change out water pump
This is why I love my 89 Honda CRX HF! It runs 50 mpg in the city and 56mpg on highway! I have yet to run into any other car that can beat it! It's all stock D15b6! 275,000 miles and still running like a champ! That's why I take good care of it! Going to rebuild the engine when it gives up and give it to my 8 year old when he turns 16 and gets his license! He's going to have to learn to appreciate and respect cars before I give him the keys to this car! Maybe by 2030 I'll probably have to sell it because we're ALL going to have to have hybrids or electric cars by then! The only Toyota's I respect are from the 80's,90's and up to 2004! Cars and trucks! Good video Scotty!
I miss my 1987 Honda CRX HF . I was getting 55 miles per gallon on just gasoline . No hybrids back then . It was was white with blue interior . No air conditioning or power steering and no power windows . It was a great car .
@@vce.john1734 And what did Scotty teach us about getting a new vehicle especially when it's been redesigned?.. if you're dead set on getting a new vehicle wait a generation or two till they work the bugs out. Number two never buy it new, with some other schmuck buy it, break it in for you for about 50k-100k and save a bundle of money!
My 03 civic hybrid was a strange car but I loved it. The big hybrid battery was definitely bad but it's still ran and operated fine, it would just need to be jumpstarted maybe once or twice a month out of the blue and my hybrid battery would be very low after fully charging on my drive.
I sold my Honda Civic hybrid when I bought the first Prius Plug-In......2 months later the Civic owner said the CVT crapped out and had to be replaced. Nine years later, my Prius with 130,000 miles and wife's 2002 Highlander with 260,000 miles are running like a swiss watches.
You should do a video with an original honda insight. That was the best hybrid ever made, and most hybrids still havent beat its like 80 mpg on the highway
I bought one of these in 2018. In the time I've had it, it's more than paid for itself in the gas savings. While it's true that you can't move off on electric power alone, it is possible when cruising at steady speeds between 15 - 30mph for the engine to shut off so that only the electric motor is driving the car. However if you need to accelerate the engine cuts in again.
I love my 2014 lexus with 140,000 miles, but dollar for dollar my 2013 accord sport cost half the price and has had 0 issues. I've put 130,000 miles it only have done tires brakes and a larger battery that's it, car is amazing....
What if it's a Honda Civic 06 lx 1.8 .... Still good right? I sure hope so bcuz I'm in love with my car .. But not sure if I should be .I'd be heart broken if not ... But would sure love to know!!! I mean, other then sw Houstons bumpy roads that it can't handle very well. I'm veryy aware of that of that part
There was an interesting reason why the Honda hybrids didn't sell as well as the Prius - because they didn't SCREAM "hybrid." A substantial proportion of Prius owners bought their cars so they would be SEEN driving a Prius. Nothing about the Honda hybrid SCREAMED "This is a hybrid, the driver is BETTER THAN YOU."
Not true, civic hybrid is notorius for lower than avg mpg, mine got only 40 mpg driven very conservatively. 10 mpg more in a prius comes out to thousands in gas savings over 300k miles thats why people buy them
@@morrisl7 I think both can "compulsive virtue signaling" and "better gas mileage" can both be true at the same time. And a $1600 used car that gets 40 mpg, why not!?!
GREAT INFO! just bought a 2005 Saturn Vue AWD it has the Honda 3.5 V6 and the Honda Tranny. It's a Sleeper SUV 106k miles rust free. Got OEM Restored Wheels and Nokian Tires gave her a detail she looks like a 3 year old vehicle. I expect to get well over 200k miles. Luckily I have my own "Scottie" my great friend is a master mechanic charges me $20.00 an hr labor after hours.
In 2020, I tried to make a deal with a Honda dealer for a new Insight. They weren’t selling but the dealer would not lower the price any. It was $25k. I bought a used 2015 Accord EXL, low mileage for $15.5k. Now the Insight is out of production, as is Clarity.
I ran two 2003 Honda Civic 5 speed manuals Hybrids to 300,000miles hardly any problems at all. I bought both used. Now drive none Hybrid Civics for more power.
wow, scotty saying good things about the honda cvt. i remember 6-7 years ago he was saying he doesnt trust them at all. although i still have my 14 civic which is the first one with the cvt and i guess its still around. the r18 engine on the other hand is a 500-1000k mile engine. solid as hell
@@namvet1968 I do believe Honda and Toyota are among the more reliable brands, just that it’s not a night and day difference. The warranty reports seem to be in line with my experience, they put the best brands at 6% warranty rate and the worst at 10%. The perception is what i’m referring too, that other brands are 90% failure rate and Honda/Toyota are less than .001%. :)

I’m a Honda Civic guy,no cars can beat the miles per gallon they go,except if you drive a hybrid one. I want to meet Scotty,he reminds me of my mechanic, honest with everything he does… Thanks for the video.👍👏👏👏👏👏🙏
That's an awesome car for $1600.00! Very good value and the car looks great!
with the top spot taken by Honda.
Usuaully when I come home from a long day driving this car, I go around 19 mph in my neighborhood and drive the last few hundred feet on battery only, until the engine has to take over again to get it up the sloped driveway where I live. xD
Also Scotty:
“Here’s why Toyota lasts longer than Honda”
Bought my 07 Honda Civic EX for only 2k. It’s been running and running ever since 🚗💨💘 Honda Forever 🚀🚀🚀🔥🔥🔥
No car manufacturer can produce the longevity of a Toyota.
My 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is getting 61.5 MPG combined City and highway. Yeah I paid 23K for it new but at $1,600 for that Honda it's a steal.
Over 60 mpg on a Corolla wow
Do they make that in hatchback?
Evening Scotty👌 great to see the daily uploads
evening and thanks!
What can I say about a man, that’s on vacation and still working? He’s just awesome! I thought I knew a lot about cars, until I fell in Scotty’s Videos. I now make my technician watch Scotty’s videos before they fix my car. Lol!
CVT AKA Snowmobile Transmission.
My dad 2016 Honda Odyssey drive perfect after 4 years of buying new took it to many road trips hopefully it hit 72k to 75k miles while driving to Florida
Hi Scotty. Look forward to seeing your videos every day. Thank you.
hello and thank you!
I wouldn't mind a manual one, but for the cost it might be cheaper to just buy the regular gas manual ones. The engines are tiny anyway in civics.
You should talk about what it takes to maintain a hybrid engine
Just don’t buy one, they suck. Best advice anyone could give ya if you care about making it to your destination every time
In my case...zero.
Mike Harris but you said you owned six....
James Hunt: So you can count! You win the fur-lined piss pot! My iPad battery was dying so I did not get to talk about the 2001 I bought in Australia & drove for a year. It was great, except for accidental meeting with an emu!
I have a 2010 Honda Insight and so far it has 210,000 miles on it and still driving strong.
I recently got a 2021 Insight touring. I hope it lasts as long as yours! So far I love it!
I got the 2005 Honda Accord hybrid with 233k miles made in Japan not America and I used everyday for delivering putting 100+ miles a day.
These cars were really smart made.
Love it, everytime Scotty makes a reference to a junkyard, he shows a picture of a Chevrolet dealership.
they do have IMA battery problems but if youre willing to hook up a balancing grid charger you can make it last virtually indefinitely
I had the same year in a regular civic coupe with the space ship gauge package. The Automatic in it shifted weird from day one but always worked. The only problem I had was a cv joint going out at around 30,000 miles but they fixed it under warrenty. Overall a good reliable car, while not overly powerful.
Loving my used 09, 1.8 for the last 1.5 years. Going to run it until the wheels fall off.
Hi scotty still waiting for my shirt from my favorite mechanic n just all around great guy
I’ve been waiting for this video as I’m thinking of buying a Honda CR-Z.
@@RaynMedia What exactly about the car is falling apart?
@@iurkoff my wife has an orange 09 5 spd fit sport. Not a hybrid, but we love it, haven't had a problem with it at 184k from japan
These drive surprisingly well too, the handling is good, especially compared to a Prius.
Me, who just bought a Honda over a Toyota: YAS
Accord gang
Civic Type-R is very Good choice...
@@Honestandtruth007 this is true
I must just have the worst luck on earth cause the three Hondas I've owned have been garbage and I'm not hard on them
@@nothing2see315 what models did you have?
Come on Scotty , Toyota Hybrid is full hybrid , their transmission as CVT is just to classify easier Yes ,Toyota hybrid can't be standard transmission But hand down Toyota , Hybrid is much more reliable .Honda Hybrid is just mild hybrid . Uber and yellow cabs drivers will agree with me.
Love my 5spd 8200rpm B16a swapped EK. Full Ac, heated mirrors, sunroof. Handles tailgaters like a go kart around corners.
1992 Honda Civic LX with manual transmission and manual windows, a 1990 Honda Accord LX with manual transmission and manual windows will last forever
Did the ima battery every die on them?
@FleeSwervinn ..no..never did... the light would come on sometimes.. mostly in hot summer and running the a/c
Sadly the new hondas aren’t as good as the old ones
That’s kinda with any car now. More plastic parts for you
@@romansroad2007 true the quality isn’t there like when I was a kid but as we all know Toyota is still the best you can get
I had a manual CRZ. Loved it!
The energy in these videos are amazing haha!
He's amazing! Caffeine?
2012 Honda Accord SE with over 💯 k miles checking in. Will buy another Honda. Had a toyota Yaris before that as my daily commuter no room for traveling, no power, road noise but gas mileage was very good and only had to change out water pump
I like that modified civic in the background
I love the pics of the horses laughing with their teeth out whenever Scotty starts laughing lol
I'm looking forward to get a Honda CRZ which is a hybrid with a standard transmission
As a Honda Fit owner I appreciate this video
Was hoping they'd bring the updated Fit they released in Asia to the US. Instead the discontinued the car.☹
I miss my 1987 Honda CRX HF . I was getting 55 miles per gallon on just gasoline . No hybrids back then . It was was white with blue interior . No air conditioning or power steering and no power windows . It was a great car .
My 2011 Insight has 175k miles, no issues, just front brake pads at 145k. Fluid changes on time or earlier than schedule. Mostly highway miles.
I luv the Japanese for their cars wish they were rwd 😪
RWD and AWD conversion kits exist if you really wanted it.
My dad still waiting for the odyssey hybrid to come to US Toyota already come out sienna hybrid here in US and I seen it everywhere for past month
FWD ftw
@@vce.john1734 And what did Scotty teach us about getting a new vehicle especially when it's been redesigned?.. if you're dead set on getting a new vehicle wait a generation or two till they work the bugs out. Number two never buy it new, with some other schmuck buy it, break it in for you for about 50k-100k and save a bundle of money!
@@thattransgirl2192 how much we talking?
Nice video, I've always preferred Honda over Toyota.
I have an 06 hybrid and it’s slow from a full stop but runs fantastic and always passes inspection
Got a Scion tC 2008 with 70k miles for 7800. Thoughts?
Scotty u the man! Have a good one
thanks you too!
Scotty please do a segment about the old Nissan hardbody. I think it was perhaps the best small truck ever made.
There was an interesting reason why the Honda hybrids didn't sell as well as the Prius - because they didn't SCREAM "hybrid."
A substantial proportion of Prius owners bought their cars so they would be SEEN driving a Prius.
Nothing about the Honda hybrid SCREAMED "This is a hybrid, the driver is BETTER THAN YOU."
@videoArchiveGuy is 100% correct. It's all about the virtue signaling.
@@morrisl7 It is true. There are certainly some for which MPG was the issue, but virtue signaling was also a huge factor.
Honda is equivalent to Toyota but I like Toyota for the mere fact of using timing chains vs belts!
This car uses a timing chain. Honda is going on 20 years of using chains now.
Yea I haven't seen any newer Honda with a belt, but it hasn't been 20 yrs
So…. it’s really “Here’s why a Honda Civic is cheaper and last longer and than a Prius”
Does anyone else quickly run outside and rev up their engines when KIlmer tells us to in the intro? Because I do.
GREAT INFO! just bought a 2005 Saturn Vue AWD it has the Honda 3.5 V6 and the Honda Tranny.
Alright! First viewer!! Great stuff Scotty. Keep up the great work!!
hello and thanks will do!
My Hyundai i30 with a 1.6L diesel engine returns 50 mpg on motorways, a hybrid can't beat that.
wow, scotty saying good things about the honda cvt. i remember 6-7 years ago he was saying he doesnt trust them at all.
although i still have my 14 civic which is the first one with the cvt and i guess its still around.
the r18 engine on the other hand is a 500-1000k mile engine. solid as hell
Not in the market for a hybrid but man love Scotty!
Scotty.. actually works.. and actually has real videos that you can actual learn something.. what UA-cam should be...
I’ve been fixing Hondas, Toyotas and in fact every brands vehicles for decades. Haven’t found one that never breaks yet. Just sayin.
Interesting. What are the most reliable in your opinion?
@@namvet1968 I do believe Honda and Toyota are among the more reliable brands, just that it’s not a night and day difference. The warranty reports seem to be in line with my experience, they put the best brands at 6% warranty rate and the worst at 10%.
The perception is what i’m referring too, that other brands are 90% failure rate and Honda/Toyota are less than .001%. :)
Love my 2011 civic. 145k miles and still ticking.
I detailed a subaru legacy today with 302,506 miles on the odometer. I'm amazed honestly
