Thank you Professor for putting videos up on UA-cam. They are excellent quality and you do a great job. I'm a former Navy jet Tech and enjoy repairing my own vehicles to factory spec. Watching this and the battery videos, and accessing AllData will assist in a project I'm doing to swap engines for a Hybrid Civic for my daughter's first car. Again, great job and can't wait to watch others!

Thank you, Professor! Now I understand the main differences between this single electric motor hybrid system, and the two electric motors that Toyota and Ford have. The two motor system takes advantage of the planetary gear set, so one motor is the starter/generator/assist and the second motor can drive the main wheels in parallel as the planetary set allows two power inputs and one output. This is why the Toyota/Ford systems work much better.
I wonder if the IMA system can add a clutch between the rotor and the crankshaft to isolate the electric motor and avoid turning the gas engine until it is started. Th electric motor will have less loading and obtain more range.

There is a way of explaining IMA that I find useful to petro-nuts
The IMA motor generator provides 10kw/ 13 hp of electric boost & torque while the gasoline engine is spooling up to a useful RPM range
The IMA motor can extract or recover energy from the drivetrain to charge the energy storage battery (traction hybrid battery)
Later models use a 15kw / 20 hp IMA motor with greater e-boost & energy recovery power
With peak torque between 1000 & 2000 RPM the electric IMA motor is strong when the petrol engine is weak.
This gives the 1.5L engine setup in the 2014 CRz that I drive better than Diesel like low end torque performance, where you can tool around at low speeds in 4th, 5th or 6th gear as you approach 30mph, the engine barely spinning at near idle speeds. If you are really gentle with the manual tranny, you can eeek out 40+ MPG

  • @AaronSchwarz42

You did a good job explaining how many different automakers are doing different kinds of electric motor integration with the ICE to improve fuel economy, lower emissions and make more useful torque sooner while also enabling energy capture from the transaxel to charge the hybrid battery (regenerative braking + peak shaving where the crank energy available exceeds the user input demand (pedal request) to capture excess energy from the engine that would normally go underutilized in a conventional vehicle.
The spline shaft rusting problem you identified clearly articulates why keeping water out of a vehicle made with IRON & copper based components is so important! Those reactive metals undergo entropy faster with ongoing exposure to water.
Any thoughts about the best hybrid architecture, system complexity vs reliability and net long term carbon energy or total lifecycle carbon of each system approach. It is possible to make a wildly efficient system that is not very reliable, but very costly to make as one example.
What about hour meters, and why automakers do not include hour meters on vehicles? so you can see how many net hours the vehicle has been on?
Any thoughts about the battery longevity in hybrid vehicles, in terms of calendar years ? replacement costs ? and long term access to replacement parts as the vehicles age?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 років тому +1

Thank you! The newest Toyota hybrid system is hard to beat. The only thing I was hoping they would have done was to use gasoline direct injection on the Prius. The new Camry hybrid with GDI is almost at Prius mpg. If the Prius used GDI, it would probably be above 65 mpg. GDI is expensive and troublesome though.
No thoughts on an hour meter. Some on-board ECM track engine run time.
Honda seems to be the only hybrid manufacturer with terrible batteries. Nissan isn't any better with their leaf EV.
      Thanks for your feedback!

Question: Is it possible to swap in a Gen 2 stator assembly and add a few cells to the battery to get that 50% increase in power?
    Thanks!

    • @OrionDakota
      @OrionDakota 2 роки тому

I am not the professional but have some experience in hack upgrades. My guess would be you would need to replace the rotor, stator assembly, wiring to battery, and battery unit (including the modules as the charge voltage will be different.) Whether or not the 2nd gen control module would play nice with the first gen engine ECU is a different story. Also you might run into issues with the different speed sensors present and swapped with the stator assembly since I believe at least one of them goes to the engine ECU and even if the connector was repinned it might not have the same input voltage or wave pattern. Sounds like it would be a pretty big upgrade if it works!

Redundancy. The car can operate entirely in petrol mode in case the hybrid system goes belly up.
Also, in very cold weather, the lead acid battery is better at supplying the necessary current to start the engine than the NiMH battery. Indeed, a lead acid battery's ability to immediately output massive current in all conditions is the main reason they've stuck around so long.

before 2012 yes. before lithium-ion batteries were installed. in the Hondas anyways. the 2003 to 2011 Ni-Mh batteries were more difficult to keep charged properly and if are allowed to sit at low charge states for a period of time and often then they are much more failure prone. needed to drive them longer distances if primarily drove them in town in order to keep them charged and in/at a higher charge state/level. in 2012-up with the Li-Ion batteries they didnt have as much of a failure rate, or were not as easily damaged by being in a lower charge state.

Thank you Professor! I have a question for you. I have an Hyundai Ioniq HEV, which It has an electric motor between ICE and gearbox, a dual clutch transmission. This model, which i don´t know if it sells in the U.S. uses the same hybrid system than Sonata Hybrid. It can runs at electric only mode for 2 or 3 kilometers at speeds up to 120 kph in certain conditions. My questión is, if you know, is there some kind of clutch that "disconnect" the electric motor from the engine? or is it solidary to cranckshaft like Honda's system? Thank you :)

I believe I read that there is a disconnect clutch or one-way clutch between the crankshaft and the IMA motor on that model.

@@WeberAuto I have been investigating a bit. In the end, it's easier than i'd thought. The dual clutch connects the electric motor and the transmissión. And a third clutch connects engine and electric motor. I've found this diagram: www.hyundaipartsdeal.com/parts-list/2018-hyundai-ioniq-hybrid/clutch-release-fork.html.
Thank you for your answer and i hope that mine would be useful for you

Hi professor. If my Honda Civic 2012 shows up the IMA Light and Check Battery Light in the dashboard.... And de code is P1440, what would be the error?

Hey doc thanks for the knowledge I wanted to ask a question about my 03 hybrid honda civic can you drive it with the IMA battery being turned off because the battery is dead so is it possible to run it with just the 12v

No. The 12V battery will die as you drive and it will shut off the engine.

If there is an issue with this, would it cause the car to vibrate and make some noise when accelerating from a stop position? I have a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid CVT transmission. Been having some vibration/juttering sensations when pushing on the gas pedal from a stop position. Its worse on a stop position if on a hill/incline. It only does this for a few seconds then stops as i gain speed. But its very noticeable

    Hello Sir,
My question isThe 2nd gen hybrid battery has 158 volts in the cells, but I noticed the Ca2 type has around 168 volts. Do you know why?
    Thanks in advance.

I have a specific question about an 03 civic hybrid: when rolling forward from a stop I get this groaning noise from under the front of the car. It isn’t when turning, just at that initial startup phase from a red light or something similar. Any ideas on what that sound could be?

It is hard to say, but the flywheel splines are known for rusting and slipping at times. Eventually it prevents the vehicle from moving.

WeberAuto hmm I imagine that could make that noise if it did; cause a grinding sound. Sounds expensive. Thanks for the input!
By the way; great video and explanation.
