As for the Willow World, at this time you had Tea Houses where the courtesans played their trade. They were ranked on how beautiful and knowledgeable they were. But each Tea House was independent and in large cities like Edo, they were often scattered about. What Gin proposed was setting aside a plot of land where all the tea houses could be consolidated. This allowed tighter security, more efficient tax collection, and what Gin wanted, a place for more artistic endeavors. The more talented and beautiful girls could focus on not pillowing arts like singing and playing of instruments. These would eventually become Geisha. Women who would be paid for entertainment and not expected to pillow. This allowed the more mature women a place in society when their youth and flowers were dried up and no longer desired. The book does do a better job of explaining it all since it is not nearly as rushed as the show is.
a willow light district if you will
Yabushige definitely has a touch of Zen about him. You can see it from how he chills out in the bath even though he's in such a precarious situation, and how he did make attempts to contemplate death earlier, and how casually he writes up his wills. His reaction to watching the sunset with Toranaga too, you could tell he was taking in the moment, regardless of how sincere or insincere he was when claiming that it had bound their fates together.
I feel like the death of Yoshii is the embodiment of the message this show is trying to tell. He was failed by the society that pushed him to want for violence, he was told that killing someone would be better than sex even, and yet all he got out of it was the most unsanctimonious death of anyone in the show. All the talk of honor and tradition blinds people to the brutality that was Feudal Japan, and the old times in general. There is no glory in war, only death.
Nagakado. Yoshii was his and his dad's family name.
Yoshii is the clan name. Yoshii Toranaga, Yoshii Nagakado.
Yes, but like: wasn't the show been trying to show exactly that? Nagakado was warned over and over about his reckless desire to take action - especially by his father. And he didn't listen, and he didn't learn. Toranaga said a thousand times for him to be cautious, to listen more, watch more, and what he did? First he kills Jozen making things worse between Toranaga and Ishido (but yeah, there wasn't much else to do in that scenario). But Toranaga warns him about being manipulated into doing stupid sh*t. Later he urges his father to take his place as Shogun because it would restore the glory of their family and he do so by saying that Toranaga never loose a war, to which Toranaga says that he never lost because he never started it in the first place. Nagakado learned something from it? No.
Then, in this particular episode, Nagakado was shown over and over again talking about glory and war and battle and to each character he talked about this to, what did they said? Toranaga warned him one last time about his delusional desire for glory "why is always the ones that have never been in a fight that crave so bad for one?" and cuts to the flashback of him, a 12 year old boy butchering a samurai in an attempt of helping him in his seppuku - so Toranaga didn't have a childhood, he was thrown in the gruesome of war, schemes and fight since a kid, so he knows what he is talking about. When Nagakado hears about his father shiting himself of fear, his smile vanished, you can see he is disappointed - not with his father, but with the story. "what do you prefer? The true? Or legends and stories?" Everyone in that room knew the difference between those two things, and if he were listening, he would learn that too. When he was talking about death in battle around Buntaro e Yabushide, that "people say your first kill is better then your first woman" you see that Yabu looks like him like: wtf are you talking about, kid? and Buntaro just looks like he's done with the nonsense. These two are experienced samurais, and they both look at Nagakado like he is being stupid. Then after, at the thermal spring his uncle again say there's nothing beautiful about death, death is just a lonely and scary path. Dudes, EVERYONE warned the kid. His death was a sad one but a dumb one. He was not unaware, he was just utterly naive and dumb. Everyone tried to warn him he was picturing something in his head that wasn't the truth about war and bloodlust. Kid thought he knew better. Well, as his uncle said: there... What's the beauty in dying like that? Rip Nagakado, sweet, well intended dumb boy.
The problem with Nagakado was he was hunting for Glory. We had assassins in this show way back on episode 2. They are quick and efficient. But our boy wants recognition so much that he takes his bloody time to reveal himself, and also takes his sweet time before making the killing blow, instead of securing his footing. He slipped on the robe on the rock.
@@yuriborba9618Even Fuji gave him advice, a warning, her point of view. She basically said “We prepare and wait for the time to come. And when the time comes, we can only hope that our preparations will be sufficient. You are not the one who controls the time.”
My favorite scene of the episode is the one with Toranaga and Gin when she sees through his deception, which nobody else in this episode seems to notice. So now everybody thinks he's a prisoner of his brother and his army instead of marching on Osaka with an army. Remember, Toranaga is all about making other people do his work for him. He wants to go to Osaka with an army :). And then the scene with Mariko and Toranaga where he slaps the dagger away is sooooo well done. Showing how everybody else around Toranaga seems so eager for death and he's been fighting to live since he was a boy and you can see the disgust on his face for a moment and the frustration. Just a really well done episode.
You're right about background being important in this show. When Saeki asks if Toranaga would give him Izu you see Yabushige's reaction. But that shot also shows John and Mariko lean in close together. Any time Mariko is around it's a good bet that John knows what's going on even if he doesn't have all the nuance of the conversations.
Speaking of.. Tadanobu Asano is amazing in this. Yabushige could easily have been a mustache twirling psycho villain out only for himself. After all, he boiled a man alive, he made secret deals with Ishido a few times, and complains to his nephew about being stuck in this situation. But Asano's acting makes Yabushige so much more complex. Even when his dialog is just grunts and hmms.
Love how he comments on it not being a beautiful death, and then the camera pulls back in an amazing shot.
Yes, in episode 5, Fuji addresses Buntaro as her Uncle, when he arrives at Blackthorne's house (upset that he has to live under the same roof).
"I have seen this, I know what is going to happen"
"Nope, I was 100% wrong."
I now have no idea how 8,9,and 10 are going to play out.
Maybe Ishido will win.
@@24X7CARZI won’t spoil it, but If you know the history of Japan then you may know what’s gonna happen at the end.
@@mhd6684 - Yeah, I’m just waiting to see how bold they’ll go in using creative license toward the end of this adaptation.
@@mhd6684 I am sure the major plot points will be there. But there are people I now care about, and want to see what happens to them. Will it differ from the 80's and or the book.
Nagakado's status
Overconfidence: 10/10
Intelligence: 1/10
Agility: 1/10
Luck: 0/10
💀💀💀💀
Why 1/10 intelligent and not 0😂 you honoured him by giving him 1 point.🤣
@@mhd6684Well, at least he's Toranaga's son. It's a point of pity lol... 😂
"You've never even seen a battle" they told Toronaga's son, while also looking down on him for wanting to see battle.
I’ve been relistning to the audiobooks and I’m reminded how amazing James Clavell writes Toranaga. He is the ultimate planner and strategist. Everyone thinks he is cornered, but Toranaga knows where the cracks are. It’s going to be interesting to see how the show works this.
Here's a little chew toy:
1. Gin asked for land in Edo; Toranaga wrote it in his will; Later that night, Nagakado managed to infiltrate the Willow World
2. Gin's Tea house's success rides on its reputation for being a private and safe space for VIP's (This is the shows progenitor of what would later be the yukaku district and the Geisha/Maiko/Oiran culture). So such an infiltration would put a huge stain on their reputation.
3. Saeki was a VIP and his whole Army was in town; we could safely assume Willow World's entrances were also guarded.
4. The only way Nagakado could have gotten in was through a blindspot, with someone guiding him and his retainers and letting them in.
I like how the show is staying organically surprising and not in a contrived overly convoluted way. Also, the balance of the narrative between the genders presented is fantastic. No character feels one-note.
Huh, I guess it really is the inverse Crimson Sky. Instead of burning buildings lighting up the skyline, we just have a quiet seep into the pond...
Nicely written comment.
There is no way, even at full strength, that Toronaga could lay siege to Osaka Castle, the plan only works from the inside out. What better way to get inside the Castle than to be escorted in
That would be my scenario A.1. where Toranaga Gets "captured" and they do a blitzkrieg attack in osaka to "rescue" him and secure the heir..
I also have a Scenario B.1.
This scenario would be an adaptation of the Battle of Sekigahara based on the information the show hs provided already; i have not read the book yet.
1. Ohno, the Christian lord, will largely be idle and not join the battle; maybe even turn against Ishido mid fight, coaxed along by the Portuguese missionaries who in turn had promises from Toranaga for a church in Edo.
2. Saeki would be indecisive and in the flank. Some time into the battle, Ishido will order him to attack, but he will not. Toranaga will command Blackthorne to fire cannons on him and that will force him to act. That way, saeki will turn and attack the lepper lord, and ishido’s flank will collapse.
And probably 3. The Noh actor samurai lord will be convinced to defect to the Toranaga side by Ochiba-sama; who I think would agree to marry Ishido on episode 8 after he defeats Toranaga, playing to his Ego to go to the open field instead of turtle up in Osaka Castle.
We have no indication of relative army sizes or numbers of confirmed allies for each side, or what the size of Osaka's garrison actually is at this point in the show. Your theory is plausible for a scenario where Toronaga and Saeki were working together all along, but it is unsupported.
I grew up in Maine and I too can run on ice. I also used to bicycle in the winter, often on ice. I had a coworker who once added studs to his bikes tires for riding on frozen lakes. (But Maine is basically Canada-lite.)
I binged Blue Eye Samurai while watching Shogun and something jumped up at me and I did the research to validate it. Shogun is set around 1600 (end of the Sengoku period) and Blue Eye in the first decades of the Edo period (1620-1650?) We literally see Madam Gin's request and creation fulfilled of having a district of Tea houses in Edo in Blue Eye Samurai! These 2 amazing and very different shows compliment each other so well 🤩
You knew that kid was gonna fall into trouble.
You've both been to Japan, right? I'll give you a little trivia.
In Episode 7, Toranaga ordered Gin to fulfill her request. He granted her two cho of land to open a tea house in Edo.
While Toranaga never actually gave the order, the tea house still exists in real life under the name "Yoshiwara" in Tokyo.
By the way, the Japanese used in this drama is archaic and is no longer spoken today. So sometimes it can be difficult to understand if you don't listen carefully. Watching the English subtitles can help.
Osaka is home to some surprising a tea house that will even surprise Japanese people. This place is called 飛田新地 (Tobita shinchi). While not an Edo-period building, the registered tangible cultural property called Hyakuban (100) is still in operation as a ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant) today.
I highly recommend visiting. It's worth seeing.
Toranaga and his brother definitely working together. The brother "escorts" toranaga to Osaka and when the gates are opened and they are in they turn and attack together. Crimson Sky
I feel bad for that poor general that he was gutting multiple katana cut in his neck while his stomach shredder
Horrible death
This happened in 1970 to Mishima Yukio in Tokyo after his failed coup attempt to restore the power of the emporer.
I hope that Saeki is still on Torunagas side but acting as his enemy in case Omi and his uncle leak the information back to Ishido before they arrive. I find it hard to believe with Torunagas reputation he would roll over and give up like that.
I'd rather die without beauty, but falling down swinging, than by a beautiful seppuku
Turns out his first kill was very like the first time with a woman: Clumsy and unable to perform and do the deed.
First kill was himself, SMH. Fucked himself, so to speak.
This was not his first or even second kill.
Yoshii had many kills even before the show started. The dude literally killed Jozen in episode 4.
Nagakado demonstrating why you shouldn't step on moss.
Commenting that the double side eye at qround 13:13 was so good! Second - my theory is that Toranaga and his brother are actually working together to get Toranaga into Osaka easily with his men so that they can rise up from inside. And I loooove all the subtle shade and power. It's so good.
That's exactly what I suspect. Which, however, makes the death of Toranaga's son much more tragic... .
@@BramGauntSo tragic. Poor kid.
That's been my theory exactly.
A definite possibility. Especially considering what Gin said about how a spy could have alerted Toranaga of an incoming army and leaving his weakend garrison exposed was a very careless mistake. This is the first time the show actually held our hands, but because of everything else that was happening and the shock factor of the ending, many people missed this.
I don't think he's working with his brother. But i do think Toranaga knew what was coming. In fact it's like they were screaming at our faces that he did, with Gin's "Stick of Time" scene. Because yes, even with his decimated army, why would he not have scouts warning him that Saeki's army was coming, and Gin caught on to that.
I think Toranaga has a plan but that the death of his son will throw him completely off-kilter
i don;t know if the negoatiation between toranaga and ghin really happened, but historically the shogun he is based on did allow for the creation of the first ever official pleasure quarters. this was important not so much for the establishment of prostitution but more that this was the area where many of the iconic arts of Japan like singing, dancing, kabuki, geisha culture, flourished and were further refined. so historically this is very important
Another great reaction. Im loving this show as well🙌🏻
日本を旅行する際は、くれぐれも後ろに転ばないように気を付けてください。😂
This isnt a complaint to you guys, but i am shocked at how many reactors ive seen miss that Buntaro is Fuji's uncle. She called him uncle several times in the episode he came back
That video title... That's brilliant. #ISeeWhatYouDidThere - I haven't even watched this reaction yet and I'm laughing.
I really thought Yoshii or Takemaru was going to walk in and strangle Saeki while he was getting his freak on.
"Youth slips away". Ha, nice ! ^^
Every civilization in history has glorified war the people we remember the most and whoes names have lived on long after their deaths are our greatest warriors.
27:24 - Yes, he is. Just wait one and see.
Saeki was to give the council's order to Nagakado to commit seppuku, and in a way, Nagakado did commit seppuku in front of Saeki
All i can say is Wow ‼ what a show👏
20:36 Well actualy for the fish it was the crimison sky
"Pause" ..Your hubby said he likes it from the front😂
*Crimson Pond*
Crimson puddle more like
what a goofy but somewhat fitting death.
No beauty in that one
But it is very realistic. Reality is not always cool.
I can agree with such realism.
OMG I totally thought this was the penultimate episode! Yay! Thank you for that nugget before the reaction 😊
Will we see you at JordanCon in a couple of weeks?
BTW, There's going to be a Barbie Pink Ajah meetup on Sunday for a photo op, if you want to plan pink outfits!🩷🩷🩷
Can't wait for your reaction to episode 8.
Can’t wait to how your reaction to be for episode8
... this title,🤨 you're a so wrong for that 😆
Claru was right. Buntaro did want a divorce. He wanted to divorce Blackthorne head from his sholders😂
I'm surprised that Western viewers mercilessly criticize Nagakado.
Why
I am Japanese, and I think Shogun expresses Japanese history as it is. I think it is a work inspired by Hiroyuki Sanada's production. It is made up of Japanese actors and the language is Japanese, which is why it is able to express the true image of the samurai. I am grateful that overseas audiences are able to understand and watch Japanese history.
The original Shogun in the '80 made a very big impact. Your culture is very rich and unique. And i can saying Sanada made a briliant work. Thank you!
toronaga's son is a dumb...😂😂😂
Say what you will about ritual suicide at least authority took responsibility.
Crimson sky more like crimson pond
“Where is the beauty in this?”
面白くなってきたね。
your titles too small... great reaction...
16:49 - Indeed. Stop being so stingy with your OV. Use 10 min.
so who got a mini heart-attack on the first 10 seconds of the show and felt like we might have gotten robbed of the actual big battle?
