19:17 Fief is the estate or the land given to a lord. When he said "Izu is my fief", he is basically saying Izu, the name of the land, is his territory. In his case, he too is beholden/swore fealty to a higher lord, a daimyo, where his territory is a part of.
Fun fact: the book "Shogun" is inspired by the real-life story of William Adams AKA "Miura Anjin", the first Englishman who traveled to Japan in the 17th century. He ended up in the service of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu, build European style ships for him, trained crews in sailing them & also in the use of Western firearms/ cannons. He also organized trading expeditions for the Shogun to Vietnam, Thailand & Burma. For his service he was off. given the rank of Samurai and his own feudal estate and eventually married a Japanese noble woman. His house is outside of Nagazaki and turned into a museum, there are several memorials for him & his wife and every August, they celebrate the "Anjin festival" in Ito City. The book/ mini-series is basically a fictionalized version of his story.
In terms of international cinema and movie awards, Toshiro Mifune, who starred in the original "Shogun" miniseries, is probably the greatest Japanese actor. "Shogun" might pave the way for Hiroyuki Sanada for more international recognition. So far, he has only a cult following among cinema buffs but who knows what'll happen after this?
Not sure if this gets cleared up later, but the heir's mother isn't the one going into labour, but her sister, who is Tronaga's daughter-in-law. So the pretext is that she's gone to Edo to visit her sister who is about to give birth

I loved the Richard Chamberlain version in the 80’s. I read the book twice. I hope this is good.
