"Anjin" is Japanese for "Pilot," and the first episode of the show (which is often called a "Pilot") was titled "Anjin."
I knew all those things, but didn't put it together until seeing this comment.
Nice!
Effortless triple entendre ❤
That smile from Hiroyuki Sanada at the end of the interrogation, for me, was peak acting. Just one expression to show that Toranaga is now intrigued by the foreigner, likes his way of thinking, and is interested in utilizing this "barbarian" to his cause, portrayed so masterfully.
It also mirrors Toronaga's own strategic situation in general and in Osaka in particular; outnumbered and completely surrounded by enemies. When Blackthorn says "unless I win," it is exactly what Toranaga intends with his enemies as well - he intends to fight and win regardless of how seemingly "impossible" it appears to be. Toranaga's smile, in part, is him recognizing a determination and fighting spirit similar to his own in the Anjin.
@@sbam4881 your understanding is accurate. Good job 👏
Very nice detail!
two things, the division of the world between portugal and spain it's true, they sign a treaty called tordesilhas treaty, because at that time portugal and spain were enemies and everything was "competition" including the dicoveries of new terretories. and the bath scene, at that time, baths were only for special occasions, like birthdays. so they only took baths once or twice per year. 🙂
The primary thing people miss about the bath thing is that people still washed -- it was completely immersing oneself in water that they were hesitant about. And of course, perfumes were very popular regardless of gender -- smelling good is a pretty universal human thing.
That's a misconception. People in the Middle Ages and at that point bathed more regularly than modern people give them credit for
@@MW_Asura For regular washing, yes; but a bath as in a full immersion in standing water was not as common. The idea was that if you couldn't drink it, you probably shouldn't bathe in it. Tea and alcohol were more common as beverages specifically because European people associated standing/still water with disease, not fully understanding the reasons why it was a problem (one of the reasons why running water was considered a weakness of "evil things" like silver and gold, for vampires and ghosts and such). A ships' water storage, even for people as puritanical as the English Pilgrims, was essentially just watered-down beer, because it kept longer in casks on voyages that took weeks, and still was through the colonial age. Alcohol wasn't just kept on ships as cargo and for sailors to get drunk, they were supposed to mix it in when replenishing their water stores. But, much like sailors to this day... They enjoyed it straight, anyway.
Very nice facts!
Toranagas smirk after Blackstone's, "unless I win.." perfect!!!
I have watched the "map" conversation probably three dozen times already. I still get goosebumps. Every nuance of that scene is absolutely perfect.
I'm a HUGE fan of the book, and this scene played out so very differently on the show, and yet just as powerfully in its own way. I have found that to be true of every facet of this show so far. The book was great, but . . . as fantastic as it is, it hasn't aged well. That said, the producers of the show have done such an amazing job of digging down to the truth of this story and modernizing it both in how its told, and how it unfolds. And in my opinion, it has (so far) made the story even better than it already was . . . which is a VERY high bar.
So glad you guys are enjoying it, and I love your perspectives. (and have enjoyed them on The Expanse, as well) Thank you for your reactions!
The book has aged fine and the map scene is absolutely explained better in it. Show is still doing a great job though.
So glad you read the book!
I'm reading through the book now and I wouldn't say it has aged poorly. If someone told me it was a recent release I'd believe them. There is nothing in it that would age the piece really.
They can't just kill John because Toranaga "claimed" him, remember he washed on his domain, and Toranaga quickly claimed him and his ship as his property, killing him in the open would be considered and act of aggression, the plan was to demote Toranaga, have him killed and then kill John, but the catholic lords wanted to have John dealt with sooner (under pressure from the church)
Very good point!
The lighting in this show is really well done. They make the flame light look so natural. Some of the indoor and outdoor nighttime lighting in this show is stunning. The writing speaks for itself. There's no fat on this script whatsoever. Every line is moving the story forward.
While I knew you would appreciate all the "little" things this show does, lets cover some highlights...
They are not just speaking Japanese, but the old form, think performing Shakespear.
Mutiple consultants worked on this show, including a "mannerisms" consultant. Hand motion, bows, walking and all the things that quietly bring you in.
Hiroyuki Sanada not just plays Toranaga extremely well, but was also the producer. Was known to essentially being constantly on set.
As a Producer, Hiroyuki Sanada reportedly insisted that every costume be made with authentic Japanese cloth and was apparently known for going through and showing cast members (particularly Samurai extras) precisely how to stand and move to keep it authentic. Sanada has been acting for 57 years at this point and this really feels like the achievement of a lifetime the way he put Shogun on screen.
Good to know that!
That scene where Blackthorne is being interrogated by Toronaga was perfect
Yeah!
The catholic priests haircut is what's known as a tonsure. It was invented as a means to help priests and monks maintain their vows of celibacy by ensuring that no woman would ever want to sleep with them...
in the original shogun miniseries, the hairstyle on the translator was more jesus-style (long flowing locks). even the original blackthorne actor looked like he was out of the last supper. 😄 impressively, in both shows, father alvito is cast very well as a white actor who speaks flawless japanese.
The way I heard it was that the tonsure was an explicit rejection of the sin of vanity. Either way, it was a deliberately ugly haircut.
A very intentional ugly haircut.
The real "maidenlesd" haircut
A show that finally makes “count how many evil laughs Nerdy makes” a worthy drinking game 😂
The only side that Kashigi Yabushige is on is his own, and will play for any side that has the momentum as any given moment. He’s like a crude Littlefinger without all the nuance. Or rather, his nephew Omi is like the schemer, and his uncle is a bit of the blunt instrument
Blackthorne: Worst. Holiday. Ever.
There is a line in the new (French) 'Three Musketeers' movie: "A king has no friends, only enemies and subjects." When I saw the opening of this episode I was reminded of it.
Pretty sure the One True King Stannis Baratheon said that before.
@@alaorcervatineto6729 It would be interesting to see if it is in any of the original Three Musketeers books.
I heard it on The King with Timothee Chalamet.
Sleeping on the floor with the mindset of "sleepover at your friends house but with better cushioning" definitely helped me adjust.
And Lady Kiri(?) was definitely funny in her appearance.
4:30. If you want a movie with lots of heinous haircuts like this watch "In the Name of the Rose (Sean Connery, Christian Slater, Ron Rearlman). Takes place in a monestary in medeivle spain or France (cannot remember). Great movie, bad hair.
talking about ron perlman and heinous haircuts watch "quest for fire" his first movie role....
I agree with Foxy Nerd about worldbuilding. I mean, you don't need to draw it out to the point where it gets boring, but show it so that the audience can immerse theyselves in it.
I love your reactions to this, because I have the same excitement and enthusiasm for every scene. I want to just live in this world. I don't want episodes to end. The show is as meticulous and refined as it gets really. Pure quality in all aspects of film-making.
I love how the japanese can say so much by saying so little
Much of the Japanese language is contextual.
This series was made by FX (Fox Networks) for distribution on Hulu. Because all attempts by Hulu to establish itself outside of the USA failed by 2014, content from Hulu is distributed Internationally on Disney+ due to Disney acquiring Fox in 2019 and is currently in the process of fully acquiring Hulu (they are currently the major shareholder due to acquiring Fox, but need to buy out NBC and Comcast in order to obtain full control). Once they obtain full control, Hulu will be fully absorbed by Disney+.
Disney+ in South Korea has k-dramas that Westerners would not expect to be on a Disney service due their mature audience content and graphic violence.
In Canada Hulu shows are on Starz. You get Starz as part of your Disney+ subscription.
I think feather guy doesn't know which side he's on yet - I think his plan is to end on the side that wins.
Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis have such fantastic chemistry as Toronaga and Blackthorne. Them together were the best part of these two episodes.
This is only going to be a one season wonder, it's one 1,000 page book adapted into 10 episodes. Think of it as running at the pace of a big budget movie trilogy.
the 1980 version is a 12 hour miniseries...
and is one of the best miniseries there is…
so i don't see the problem...
Yeah, this is such a specific moment in time, you really can't make a sequel season. The next book in the series would be mid-19th century "Tai-pan" anyway and would be set in Hong Kong. And the Chinese gov't would hate the subject matter of "Tai-pan" and you lose your wonderful Japanese crew and cast that are key to making this... Tai-Pan might have been filmable for a brief window in the 1960s...
The acting and shooting in the assassin scene were excellent
I liked the toranaga win win at the end if the assasin come for him , the pilot dies and it mean he saves his life , if the assasin goes for the pilot he catch it on the act and mean he's important .
So glad you guys are loving the show I absolutely LOVE it!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Toranaga is quite sneaky.
The fingernails thing, methinks, refers to ecumenical debate at the time about what “whole again in heaven” and “glorious bodies” meant. Would Taiko get his eyelashes and fingernails back? In the afterlife, do you assume a healed physical form or a idealized spiritual form? Weird, for sure, but it was a debated topic. I’m not religious myself, but it’s interesting to see how knowledge was pursued in the past.
One comment about the pace... I think it's great and quite economical. The book takes a bit longer to get going... Through Episode 4 of 10 they're about 55% of the way through the book but I think they've captured everything they need to to set up a great 2nd half.
I hope you do a book review for Shōgun after the series’s. You get so much more understanding of the characters and their motivations. The series is great because the book is. There could have easily been a 2 season series and still not touch on everything in that one book.
when you finish this version you should watch the 1980 version... its also really good... its on youtube...
Controversial maybe, but this version is actually even better.
@@dylanblue2271 well, I think it's hard to compare completely and say which one is better...
there is a 40 year difference in how a story is told and filmed...
I just want to say that both versions are good...
I love this series so far as well as your reactions to it!
Ty for reaction ! I apreciate it
Toranaga is like Ned Stark if Ned Stark was good at politics.
Oh no Toranaga is straight Tywin Lannister, he views everyone around around him as his pawns to move around as he sees fit. Infact in the book him protecting the heir is bollocks he straight up wants to be shogun.
If Tywin and Edward had a baby, it’d be Toranaga.
More like Tywin Lannister.
Na they have very different personalities.
Trying to watch Shogun in 15 minute portions, although it is still going a bit too hard too regularly.
i love watching you two watch this.
Wanna know something funny about the priest/monk haircuts? There’s a few different styles, all ridiculous, but there’s another lost style. we’re not exactly sure what it looks like in modern times cuz it was so ridiculous ppl quickly abandoned it in favor of this circular mini bald cap looking one. Can only imagine how bad it must’ve been.
20:08 even the character doesn't know lol
I think Andor is the only thing kind of close to this show on Disney+, in terms of care, cinematography, dialogue, etc... but Shogun still is better, its insanlly good
The Jesuit translator's haircut(Tsukku-san, have they called him that in the show?) is a tonsure - the Roman Catholic or Eastern rite of admission to the clerical state by the clipping or shaving of a portion of the head
I am a bit disappointed that he is not wearing orange robes like he did in the book.
I'm trying to gauge, through you're impressions, how I might be understanding the story if I wasn't familiar with the book and earlier series and I think I would be sooooo lost. with the amount of exposition in the books, explaining Japanese , Jesuit and Blackthorne's point of view on why they react as they do. I find this version to be very pretty and well made but maybe a bit too obtuse. So I'm glad you two are grokking it as you do and hope that my impressions are the odd one out.
also, I keep getting surprised by the changes from the book.
Yeah the bright orange would stand out really well as it's supposed to.
Nice reaction!!
Second comment to the goddess, Watch faster dammit! So many things to talk about!
That show is just so... gun. Sorry, "good".
Badum tssss, that's all for me folks.
But yeah, poor joke aside, this show reaches highs I havent felt in TV in a long time. I can easily see it reach my all time high alongside early GoT, The Expanse, Black Sails, Mr Robot, For All Mankind, Legion, Peaky Blinders, 12 Monkeys, The Last Kingdom, early Vikings...
The monk hairstyle was designed to be ugly as it's an outward expression of humility.
The show is so beautifully shot and the dialogue is wonderful. The ONE gripe that I have about it is that they didn't hire a main character actor with actually blue eyes... And so the actor has to wear contacts. Because his eye colour is significant to the character as a physical trait that makes him alien to the Japanese people. And colored contacts do NOT interact with light in the exact same way that a person's actual eyeballs do... And so it kind of looks uncanny and takes me out of the scene every time I see it. Especially, blue eyes. Blue eyes react to lighting SO much and can shift in color so dramatically depending on the lighting in the room. And I mean I'm sure they probably could have used special effects a la The Witcher... Where some scenes it's contact lenses and other scenes it's CGI, usually close-ups, because then they can have the color of the eyes interact and shift with the lighting... But yeah the main character's eyes are the SAME shade of blue regardless of the lighting that he's in and it just takes me to fuck out of the scene often, unfortunately. Once I noticed it in episode 1...I could not stop seeing it.
But I'm fully aware that that's a nitpick and the rest of the show is absolutely stunning.... But yeah it just I don't know feels...a bit cheap, IMO. Which is a standout because clearly everything else has so much money and love put into it. But not the main characters eye colour looking natural.
Disney+
nice hat
😂
Sorry, nothing to do with the series, but an OnlyFans hat, really...? =__=
the guys forced laugs are so annoying and make their videos unwatchable
I wish it was forced but I'm actually just this annoying all the time unfortunately...
The main thing thats bothersome is that stupid only fans cap. Everything else is fine.
@@ak96ful1 it’s actually disgusting. UA-cam is watched by children and she’s promoting her porn page and he’s trying to play the whole “I’m innocent man” card. Can’t stand this channel.
We just gonna ignore the ONLYFANS hat? Weird tryna promote your OF through reactions 👎
oh no... she also has an onlyfans shirt that she wears regularly... what a horrible person she must be....
I'm being very ironic here...
get a life and get over yourself...
Why is it weird?
@@DeadsySedai because this is UA-cam. Children watch this. It’s not a sight to promote your Porn Page.
Just imagine if woke people got there hands on this show we would of probably end up having black actors playing a Japanese character so glad that there was no wokeness in this shogun is a masterpiece fact
Great jugs
