Guys actually the Pilgrims (Protestants) left for the Americas not because they were being persecuted but because they thought religious observance by the Church of England at that time wasn't strict enough. They were basically hard-core fundamentalist which goes someway towards explaining why Americans today tend to be more religious than their British cousins.

@@TheMerovingienneClavell never wrote a direct sequel to _Shogun,_ but there were a couple more major events in the life of Tokugawa (Toranaga) which could definitely make for as many as three more seasons if they were open to expanding the fiction of Clavell's world. In particular, the war between Toranaga and the heir of the Taiko, Yaechiyo, and his mother Ochiba -- which would happen about a decade after the events of this show -- would make for a complex, layered, and tragic conclusion to the saga, where Yaechiyo could be painted sympathetically and Toranaga's ruthlessness and underhanded trickery could cast him in a potentially more villainous light.

Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Mr. Robot, Succession, Dark, True Detective S1, Sopranos, The Wire, Atlanta, The Leftovers, The Bear, Hannibal, Sherlock, Chernobyl, Fleabag, Barry, Severance, Arcane, Fargo, Mad Men, etc. Shogun is definitely an incredible show, but I wouldn't say it's in the top 10 of all time when these other shows have better acting performances, cinematography, writing, etc. It is definitely going to be in the in the top 5 of 2024, but yeah, I don't see how it's going to be better than The Bear when each season has been getting better and better and both seasons have been masterpieces, so I expect another Emmy's sweep from The Bear to be the best show of 2024.

It's all about the head of the church. Spain and Portugal are Roman Catholics, with the Pope as the head of the church in Rome.
1534 Henry VIII established the Church of England (Anglicans) with the English monarchy as the head of the church. Which establish the conflict. Catholics vs Protestants.

No no no, Martin Luther kicked it all off by posting his protest to the door of Wittemburg Cathedral. Henry VIII originally wrote a well regarded tract against Protestantism before making himself head of the church in England in order to divorce his wife and loot the monasteries. It was Elizabeth I who finally established the church of England after the chaos of Bloody Mary's return to Catholicism.
The shenanigans on the continent evolved quite separately from what was happening in the British Isles; although ultimately the conflict was about Papal authority and the right to interpret the Bible.
The hatred between the English/Dutch and Spanish/Portuguese was as much political as religious: religion often proving able to provoke more hatred than any other difference of opinion . . .

At the time, Kyoto was the capital and home of the emperor, but nearby Osaka was where the actual power was. Shogun and Taiko were technically servants to the emperor, but in practicality, they were in charge. Tokyo, meanwhile, was called Edo, and was just an overgrown fishing village at the time. Its importance came in the decades and centuries that followed.
Also, technically, Yokohama is now Japan's second-largest city, but Osaka is still thought of as Japan's second city.

The 80’s miniseries was a big deal when it came out two years after “Roots.” I read the book and watched the 80’s mini when it originally aired. It is a good bit easier to follow though, like “Dune,” the modern production values are fantastic.
As far as religion goes, the Protestants broke with the Catholic Church in the Reformation led by Martin Luther in 1517. The head Priests in Japan were members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). They are kind of elitist Catholic missionaries. It’s way more complicated but this is all you really need to know to watch this show.
Blackthorne is an English navigator on the Dutch ship, Erasmus. They are on a mission to harass and disrupt Portuguese shipping and trade in the Pacific while also establishing trade with Japan. Blackthorne found his way to Japan using stolen charts (the book, also called a rutter). This is why the Portuguese keep calling him a pirate.
The Erasmus lands at a village run by Omi, son of Lord Kasigi Yabu. They are both vassals of Toranaga; one of the five Regents ruling Japan until the son of the Taiko reaches his majority. The Taiko unified the warlords and created the Council of Regents to maintain the peace and save his son. As with any government, it works best when the rulers disagree so that no one person or faction grows too strong. The only two Regents that matter are Ishido and Toranaga. Both want ultimate power and the title of Shogun though both deny it.
Episode One has Toranaga trapped in Osaka Castle, HQ of Ishido. Yabu was trying to hijack the cannons from the Erasmus to use as a bargaining chip in his quest for being on the winning side.
There were several excellent miniseries from 1975-1996:
    Roots
    Shogun
    Holocaust
    Centennial
    The Thorn Birds
    The Winds of War
    War and Remembrance.

European politics then was more complicated than implied - despite their (at that time very recent) difference over religion Portugal and England had an alliance that went back centuries and shared a dislike of the Spaniards.
The majority of Japanese I think are either Buddhist or Shintoist (their old native religion). There is a Christian minority who endured centuries of imaginatively brutal persecution from this time onward. By an irony of fate they were particularly numerous in Nagasaki where I *think* they had a cathedral at the time of the bombing.
Actually protestants left England to go to America because 17th-century England was too tolerant for them (which is saying something considering what a hell-hole it was). They wanted the freedom to freely indulge their urge to persecute anyone who didn't fit their interpretation of Christianity and Godly behaviour. Hence the enthusiasm for identifying and hanging witches.
Christians and Muslims also worship the same God. They just disagree about the nature and attitudes of that God.
I remember when I read the book many many years ago I was very impressed at how it portrayed the main character's psychological transformation as he gradually became Japanese.

During the closing of Japan, from 1603 to 1853, the Dutch were allowed a trading post at Nagasaki and were the only Europeans given this status. Despite being English, Blackthorne (and his real historical counterpart, William Adams) sailed with a Dutch merchant company during the time period depicted in the novel/series.
Now both England and the Dutch Republic were at war with Spain in the period, as the Dutch Republic had broken away from Spanish rule in 1566, but as Portugal and Spain had been joined under the Iberian Union in 1581 (basically the King of Spain claimed the crown of Portugal after its prior king died without a direct heir) this eventually brought Portugal into the conflict, too, and at the time depicted in the novel/series Dutch privateers had taken to raiding Portuguese convoys and colonies, and seizing their trade routes.
The religious nature of where Japan fits into this conflict is a bit oversold in the novel/series, IMO, as for example none of the members on the actual Council of Regents were Catholic converts (though there were daimyo, or lords, who did convert), but for about a hundred years, from 1540 to 1640, there was an ebb and flow of toleration and persecution of missionaries and converts based on whether or not particular feudal lords viewed them as either a strategic asset or an intolerable disruption, and over that time the "intolerable disruption" argument had pretty much won out. The Shimabara Rebellion in 1637, which was the first major conflict in Japan in decades and involved an uprising of Catholic peasants, pretty much convinced the powers that be to outlaw Christianity entirely, and relentless persecution was the official policy until the period of isolation ended.

Five ships and five hundred men wasn't an invasion fleet, but a decent Trading and exploration fleet.
At the best of times in this period, if you sent five. You'd be lucky to get one or two back.
And Blackthorne had to bring the ships across the Pacific, from the America's. That's why in the book, they are referred to as Eastern Barbarians.
The Portuguese are called Southern Barbarians.
The Portuguese and Spanish had bases and ports in Africa, India, China and the Philippines.
So British and Dutch ships were fearful of that route. The Dutch learned to use the Roaring Forties, strong trade winds along the 40th degree of latitude from South Africa to Australia and then North to Indonesia.

When it comes to religion in Japan at this time, the primary 3 would be Shintoism, Buddhism and Catholicism (Catholic Christian). Issue is in two of the cases they're more of a local interpretation of said religion. Shintoism is what you can call the homegrown religion of Japan. Buddhism is modified to fit Japanese beliefs. Catholicism has also been modified in a way so people in Japan can understand it or at least attempt to. In Shintoism for example everything including a humble rock has a spirit. So try explaining a Monotheism religion like Catholicism to a culture that believes like that. Buddhism kind of works in Japan primarily because Buddhism is more of a way of life and a system built around people have the potential to becoming 'gods' per se. Meaning it isn't really monotheist and implies many gods can and do exist. It's also why Buddhism actually functions very well alongside other religions because it will normally not deny that another god, or gods exist.
There is a film called "Silence" from 2008 which I think is a great sequel to this series if you want to understand some of the religious hostility that existed in Japan. You see some of it in this series, and it's focus around a number of Japanese Christian characters is very welcoming. Silence deals with events well after this series, and the eventual banning of Christianity in Japan. The main character Blackthorn the real life counterpart of that character was actually quite important when it came to the road that lead to Christianity being banned in Japan.

Glad you two are jumping in to this.
The much beloved & revered book by James Clavell was based on actual Japanese 17th-18th century history. The tv miniseries in 1980 was one of the first epic tv mini series & groundbreaking. Also, it was culturally important as it piqued interest in Japanese history & culture by US audiences of the historically insular nation of Japan. In the 70’s brands like Sony, Honda, Toyota & others started becoming household names but this period of the 70’s - 80’s saw the explosion of imported Japanese culture which is why we now have so much around like sushi restaurants, Japanese cars, anime, etc. It was culturally significant as it had a hand in all of this.
So this remake had huge shoes to fill because the book & 1980 show were critically acclaimed & much loved. And they did not disappoint. The 1980 TV show had one of Japan’s greatest actors of the 20th Century playing Toranaga, Toshiro Mifune. Now Hiroyuki Sanada is arguably one of Japan’s greatest actors & well known to US audiences. The show is amazing as everything from the acting to the sets to the costumes & cinematography are top notch.
I’m a yankee New Yorker & American but my Mom is Japanese so I grew up with Japanese culture & influence in my house. So Shogun has a special place in my heart. It’s a great book & story & both tv shows are great. I am so happy that they outdid themselves with the remake & that people are loving it. Even if a show is great it doesn’t mean that it will be popular or well received. E.G. AMC’s Turn about the American Revolution & Washington’s Spies was great but not popular. Shogun is amazing but it’s also be a hit & critically acclaimed.
Also, you two are in for a treat. It’s one of the rare shows that gets better with every episode. Enjoy! Excited to watch your reactions. You’re going to love it methinks.😉👍🫡😃

Ah yes, Episode 1: _Anjin._ You're in for a *_wild_* ride. Enjoy!
Japan's religions at the time were mainly Shinto and Zen Buddhism.
Tokyo (then known as Edo, and Toranaga/Tokugawa's main city) was at the time smaller than Osaka, which was already quite developed. But the real capital of Japan/Nihon during that time was Kyoto, which was the Emperor's city.
Note though that the Taiko was not the Emperor. He was one of the Emperor's highest-ranking subordinates. What made him noteworthy was that he helped unify a fragmented nation, with many warlords constantly fighting each other for a long time.

There are some big differences between Protestant and Catholic, a lot of it has to do with how the catholic pray to Mary and all those saints and that the traditions of the church are equal to the bible. Protestants basically believed that all of that is idolatry and blasphemy and that if the bible says one thing and the church something else the church is wrong. and Catholics treated them as heretics. It is complicated without turning this into bible school or starting a fight.

Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the doors of All Saints Church in Wittenburg on October 31, 1517. This was the start of the Reformation. Conflicts between the new Protestants and the French Huge aura and the English were vicious, brutal an bloody. Spain, Portugal, and Italy as well as their trading partners remained fiercely loyal to the Roman Catholic Church, overlooking the Ninety five points of contention the young Wittenberg University student Luther proposed in an effort to redeem the Catholic Church from its worst sins including selling Plenary Indulgences (official amnesty from Pugatory) and selling of relics of Saints and alleged worship of said Saints and the elevation of Mary almost to the same reverence as the Triune God {Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Europe was the site of numerous battles and depriving Portugal of the riche of trade with Japan was a strong motivator at the onset of Clavelle's novel.

    Just a point of note:
    The pronunciation is not "SHO-GAHN!"
    It's closer to, "ShO-O-GOON" ,.....or.... "SHO-O-GOUN"
The "SHO-GAHN" way that Americans and Westerners pronounce it as it almost as bad as when you call the country "EYE-RAHN" (Iran) and not as it should be correctly pronounced, "EE-RAHN".
It's particularly egregious becaues neither in the English language nor in Arabic (or Persian), do you pronounce words that begin with the letter "I" following by a hard consonant that way (irrational, irregular, irredeemable, irresponsible, .......so why "EYE-raahn"?????).
The only one I can think of where you do is the "made up" iPad or iPhone.
Okay,.....also "irate",.....but that is strictly an exception to how you pronounce those kinds of words.

You should have reacted to the original miniseries Shogun made in 1977 based on the novel by James Clavell, who himself was a POW in WWII with the Japanese. the 1977 version starred Richard Chamberlain and Pilot Major John Blackthorne, The character of Blackthorne is actually based on a real English navigator William Adams who did pilot five ships from Rotterdam in Holland, but their real destination should have been around Peru, but it was A Spanish colony and Holland and England were at war with the Spanish so they opted t go to Japan 2 ships were lost at cape horn and one with its crew remained in Hawaii the rest sailed off to Japan, when they got there most were sick. in any rate William Adams was the first European to ever be a Samurai warrior and own his own estates in Japan.
