no tadayoshi is not hiromatsu's son, buntaro is his son and fuji is his grandaughter by another of his children which makes her buntaro's niece, tadayoshi was married to fuji, he is not related to hiromatsu by blood.
If the show followed *_actual_* history, Nagakado would have been Toranaga's 4th (and youngest) son.

Watched this last night with my husband and literally yelled "NO! WHAT THE FUCK!?" at the end of the episode
My girlfriend let out the loudest audible gasp I’ve ever heard, then we both nervously started laughing. One of those great subversive moments in TV.

This death scene (and maybe the entire epsode) was pure Game of Thrones from the better seasons. I wasn't surprised by the boy's fate, but by the way of it. He was overconfident, naive and waaay to restless.
Nagakado failed again and again because he was too eager to FIGHT, but Toranaga avoids fights again and again because he is always playing to WIN. Toranaga has already shown he is willing to execute entire plans without giving any hints beforehand to anyone (not even us… the audience). He had his wives doing everything from faking pregnancy pains to switching spots with him disguised in a dress just so he could escape custody, and he did all that while keeping us and most of his subordinates completely out of the loop. Nothing happening in this episode was inconsistent with anything he has done before. He will keep anyone who doesn’t need to know at arms length until all his chess moves are fully executed.
Remember, Toronaga has been/is playing 4D chess while everyone else is playing checkers, he knows he can't lay siege to Osaka Castle and win, only way it works is from the inside out, what better way to get into Osaka than to be escorted in. Fujiko is the daughter of Hiromatsu's son, Buntaro's brother
I think he had his brother put on the Council!
I mean, the scene with the madam is essentially a scene where the writers are smacking the viewer in the face with a baseball bat that has "HE HAS A PLAN!!!!" engraved on it. Why would someone who says not to trust anyone else than you, suddenly trust his brother. And like the madam says, why make such a silly mistake NOT to have spies to warn him that his brother has moved an army, to his surprisingly poorly defended garrison. Seems kiiiiinda silly for someone as clever as Toranaga, doesn't it.

Yeah mostly likely Toranaga’s brother’s betrayal and Toranaga’s surrender are just an act to catch the Regents by surprise. Of course since Toranaga didn’t tell anyone about his plan his son tried to kill the brother. Which might sour the deal.
It's starting to dawn on me, Crimson Sky apparently entailed storming Osaka castle in a massive attack. What easier way to storm Osaka castle than being escorted in? Not to mention others have mentioned in comments, John Blackthorne's rant may have been staged.
I think Gin hinted that shes onto the fact that he has some sort of plan, remember in episode six, Toranaga read a message and then immediately burned it before his conversation with Mariko. He knew his brother was going to betray him. Whether its a real or fake betrayal, im not sure - but it was definitely expected.
Toranaga had his brother out on the council -- it was a win win; either his forces join him or he betrays him -- betrayal gets him into the castle!
I'm just saying.
One of the Japanese phrases they specifically showed earlier that John knows is "Crimson Sky". When Toranaga said "Crimson Sky is cancelled", he looked straight at John when he said "Crimson Sky".
That was John's "go phrase" to start his part of the plan. The rant was planned.
I thought the rant was part of the plan as well.
Also Ishido(?) ship is in the harbor I believe. So John can take it out. Unless I’m very much misunderstanding things.
Plus why would the leaders at that meeting allow a “barbarian” to interrupt, call them out and leave without consequence. The guy in ep. 1 had to kill himself and his child for speaking out of turn.

the whole scene of John having the rant and storming out of the meeting was straight out of one of D&D's GoT episodes.

Toranaga letting himself as "hostage" to get into Osaka castle without need to raid or siege
while in the same time, John just go to his ship to ready for attack on Osaka, only the problem is how John could get his ship out of sight of Ishido warships

Amazing episode. The whole show deals with the way Japanese people perceive death (in that period of time). In this episode, they explore the way they romanticized death trough legends. To have a character that thinks so poetically about killing or being killed, die in such a pointless way, while his enemy says "what's so beautiful about this?" shows the level of amazing writing behind this show.

Absolutely agreed. How ironic that the one most obsessed with the "Honour" and "Glory" of war died the most honourless and pointless death.

@@corvuslight I think he was foolish in the sense that he thought it was just all black and white. He was unable to recognise or understand the complexities of the situations he was witness too/took part in.
He was sweet but naive to the point of idiocy. His murder of Jozen was a perfect example. Omi is just as much to blame for that though. The hotspring scene between the two was so sad .. You can tell that Omi is starting to regret being so eager. This won't be accurate, my apologies.

I dont know if you've read the books but your Initiative is fucking spot on! As with The willow-world, its not so much that he funds it to keep her quiet, as she lives and dies at Yoshi-Toronaga Sama's pleasure, he can have her entire bloodline ended with a word - its more to think along the line of he is thinking of all the profit and information he can gain if its policed in the usual manner with taxes and such - he is planing for the future :)
@@summonerscode6994 Yeah, I've read the book twice. What I meant about Lady Gin was that he recognizes and invests in potential, just as he does with Blackthorne and Omi.
@@rawkmode6315 Absolutely right! Can I ask, How have you found the show compared to the book so far? Are there any scenes that you would have enjoyed seeing come to life in the series? If I had to pick 2 scenes - the first would be with Rodregies- San meeting Anjin and Marako in the Izu springs, the scene at night where they chat over sake. The second would have to be the Wako scene with Anjin and Lord Toronaga- which was my absolute favourite :)
@@summonerscode6994 I have enjoyed the show quite a bit, and I think that the performances have been phenomenal. I think the thing I was looking forward to which didn't happen was the part where Anjin almost commits seppuku, and it earns him a ton of respect from the Japanese. I also wished to see more of his transformation as he, "goes native," I really enjoyed that in the book. Obviously we dropped the road trip romance which gave so much extra context for the John--Mariko relationship. I understand why they did that, it makes sense, but I still wished we could have had it. I also felt that tea ceremony had a much bigger impact in the book than in the show, but I think that's because a book allows the author to describe what the characters are thinking. I think Kasigi Yabu was an absolute standout in the show, although I'm unclear why they changed his named to Yabushigi.
I think John is actually growing on Yabu.
I really do. I think he thinks if John is going to carry a daisho, he needs to know how to use the swords.
And Yabu is such a funny guy and somehow lovable (Idk if thats even remotely the right word to use) that I almost forget that he habitually likes to boil people alive and had originally attempted to conspire against Toragana.
John probably knows how to use a cutlass pretty well. Since he was a privateer he’s probably been involved in boarding enemy boats. That’s why he was trying to hold the katana one handed. That’s how you weild a shorter bladed cutlass.

@hobet yes, Buntaro is a son of Hiromatsu, and Fuji is a granddaughter of Hiromatsu, but from a different son (which was not mentioned), probably older than Buntaro and probably not alive.

Within the story this seems to be common knowledge, so it's not something Mariko could have lied about.

Jingle is usually used for pleasant ringing sounds- wind chimes, church bells, a purse filled with gold coins, etc. while jangle is used for unpleasant sound jangling pots on a cart or metaphorically like car horns and construction noises can jangle someone's nerves.

i just really love the writing of the women in this show. they’re so layered and complex, all different from each other in ways, and i also love that a lot of the times they’re involved in the discussions of the central theme of fate in the show. absolutely great performances too
also put me down for “there is a secret plan,” because 1) gin is adept at reading people’s secret hearts as THEE lady of the willow world, and 2) blackthorne specifically calls out toranaga as being a “master of trickery” before he leaves (which i think is an exit strategy)
as for the last scene…….man. i’m still shaken. “where is the beauty in this,” indeed

32:54 just to clear it up. Fuji is Hiromatsu’s granddaughter. Her husband (who had to kill himself and their child) was Hiromatsu’s grandson-in-law. Buntaro is Hiromatsu’s son and Fuji’s uncle. I think Fujis Dad was Hiromatsu’s son and Buntaro’s brother.
Toranaga doesn’t want Anjin to waste his life over a straight face battle and I think the rant Anjin said before he walked away was an act, he and Toranaga were on something.

Helmets like that of Toranaga's brother, Saeki, were designed to stand out. There are some really wild and obnoxious looking designs from the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States period). In fact, many of them were not practical for battle. But if you were a Lord General, you weren't on the battlefield fighting, you were in the rear getting updates on battles and giving orders by messengers, or on a hilltop if possible, overlooking and commanding your army.

Anyone thing the last scene at the council is a rouse? We see Blackthorne kina vow his loyalty to Toronaga ``whatever their fate might be``. And then in the same episode he just leaves him and insults him at the same time without any reaction? I think their is some trickery behind this...
Also the way nobody would be able to understand "The master of trickery" except for Mariko and him standing instantly after Toranaga mentions the Crimson Sky...

I like how the theme of this episode was about (among many things), "Legends," "Fairy Tales," and "Truth." And tales (history) are told and passed on by the victor. No matter how honorable that first guy was 26 years ago(and brave to ask a kid to second him), the Toranaga's stories are told differently (the son who tries so hard to live up to that "Legends"). Comparatively how sneaky and dishonorable the son was toward his enemies goes out like that. I'm really looking forward to the future episode to see how Toranaga turns this into a legendary story.

@@hazri8758 She asked him for the Tea house district and he told her that there isn't much future for him to grant her request (pretending like his fate is sealed) .. The old woman was not buying it. She told him that it's hard to believe that a Master of Guile like him who has an extensive network of spies wouldn't know that there was an army coming to surround him like they did. He would not have walked into a trap unless he has other plans to turn the situation to his advantage. But what does she know (she says), she's just an old Whore.
Basically , Toranaga would NEVER just blindly walk into a trap like this. He's planning something.

In the old days, the Japanese viewed the soul as being in the belly. It is replaced by the heart today. Seppuku is also such a context.

I definitely by the end of the episode am 100% sure Toranaga has a plan already in action. Whether it's just with John and/or his brother is where I'm torn. But the brother remaining alive at the end definitely gives me more ammo that he's being 'escorted' with additional men right into the place he needs to infiltrate! The brother could have a face turn, but also him leaning extra hard into his dickheadedness could be a just obvious storytelling plot twist.

Nagakado's death wasn't in the book. He just sort of slipped out of relevance toward the end. They decided to give him a death in the show with Clavell's daughter's blessing

@@ahmadtarek7763 Similar, but not quite. To quote: "Toranaga realized that his son didn't understand, would never understand, would always be merely a hawk to hurl at an enemy, swift, sharp and deadly."
I haven't read the original work, but Toranaga is modeled after Ieyasu, so when I think about Ieyasu's fighting style, I think it's a ``lose and win'' strategy. He probably thought that if he surrendered once, he would have a better chance of winning. Ieyasu was a cautious military commander who saw his chances of victory.
Ieyasu does not do things that completely eliminate his chances of winning. He may have agreed to return to Osaka because he felt he had to get out of Ajiro. Many of his soldiers also died in the earthquake. I think Kiku is Toranaga's "KANJYA". All the viewers are disappointed that Nagato died in such a tragic and pitiful manner. Although he was a stupid son, he was a beloved character. He loved Daddy. I can't wait for episode 8.

Well since I think we agree that the rant at the end was an act, I'm just wondering why did John only mention Yabushige and Nagakado, like specifically though? I thought he was gonna mention all the people present there.
Who is the model for the named person in the play?
This can basically be determined to some extent from the armaments that the real person had.
However, the setting is not necessarily the same as the real person.
For example, Maeda Toshiie, the model for Saeki Nobutatsu's armor, died of illness the year before the story.
And there is no blood relationship between Nobutatsu and Toranaga's model.
Im grasping at straws here but I feel like this episode is a total misdirect, hearkening back to the switcherooo on episode 3.
1. why the heck was Buntaro and Mariko asking their "Last request" to Toranaga? Especially after the reveal of the last episode, it seems dissonant.
2. Then there's the part where Blackthorne speaks rudely to the war assembly in the end but was allowed to just walk even with his titles, probably because he is a barbarian... There must be an exit strategy, as before walking out, Blackthorne names Yabushige, and Nagakado (both trained to handle the cannon regiments).
3. Looking at everyone's expression, Mariko does not seem to surprised, or more importantly, too concerned about the outburst.

Don't overlook the title of the episode. Madame Gin thinks all this is a part of Toranaga's plan - maybe not the earthquake, but it would be very stupid of Toranaga to be taken by his brother like this, and I'm certain he was testing his brother's loyalty because he never trusted him to begin with. Toranaga keeps saying he'll never attack first, not that he won't defend himself when the final moment comes. His plan has to be to lull everyone into thinking he's helpless and given up, but he's also kind of frustrated that no one but the "old whore" has seen through it - they all think he's too stupid to avoid a trap like this? Did Blackthorn see through it all? His display of disappointment at the end was kind of weird.
