I'm not exactly a fan of Ariana, but can we acknowledge just how damned good she is in this? That's one magnificently subtle performance. As for Cynthia Erivo, if there isn't a plethora of awards being thrown at her for this, people should be rioting in the streets. I'm not ashamed to say she made me cry.

@Emmanuelh89 They broke me. I can't even think of that party scene without tearing up. To go from anticipation & excitement, to utter humiliation, then end up with the most beautiful human interaction WITHOUT A SINGLE WORD? I've never witnessed a full cinema of people sit in transfixed silence, then hear pretty much everyone present trying not to be heard weeping is something I'll never forget. It's difficult to put into words just how profound that performance truly is. You have to witness it. I think it hits SO hard because it dredges up painful memories for anyone who was made fun of, bullied, humiliated, etc. and we've relived it through all those feelings being mirrored in Cynthia's face. That first tear shattered my heart.

I think she'll get the best supporting Oscar, all the little looks, expressions, movements that people will pick up on a second watch if they miss the first time, for this tone of movie, it was a masterclass. Plus the voice, plus the emotional scenes. Just great.

    • @Chuckf66

@MadMorphMovieClub She deserves to win every damned award in the known universe for that performance. I've seen many incredible performances over the last six decades, but nothing comes close to what she did. Words can't convey just how good she is. It has to be seen.

@@katilynn365 The thing is, the tear kind of ruins the plot. After all, if "her soul is so unclean, pure water will melt her", then she shouldn't cry, because tears are made from water & water, at least in the OG OZ canon, GENUINELY melts The Wicked Witch of the West. Yes, I know in the _Wicked_ stage production (and more than likely, part 2 of the film adaptation), Elphie feigns her death via melting to give theatergoers a bittersweet happy ending rather than the TRAGEDY the character's originally intended to have, however OZ purists/fans of the _Wicked_ book actively want Elphie to CANONICALLY DIE because she's SUPPOSED TO, because she IS The Wicked Witch of the West & The Wicked Witch of the West turns into a wet puddle on the floor of her castle after getting water thrown on her by Dorothy Gale, nevermind that Gregory Mcguire recontextualized the revised Elphaba as a TRAGIC character who tries to do good but so many bad things happen during her life that she finally embraces the "Wicked" label she's been misfortunately tagged with and, as far as the 1995 novel is concerned, her melting (which is 100% REAL in the book) comes after the quintet slaughter all of her other witch familiars besides the captive Flying/Winged Monkeys (Tin Man beheads Elphie's pet wolfhound Killjoy & his pack with his axe, the murder of crows are themselves murdered by the Scarecrow snapping their necks, and the swarm of bees die once they lose their stingers after trying to dent the Tin Man, meanwhile Dorothy, Toto & the Cowardly Lion were hidden underneath the Scarecrow's straw after the Scarecrow told them to take him apart so they could be hidden & not get stung by the bees) and, unlike the 1939 MGM movie where she threatens to torch the Scarecrow with her lit broomstick, Elphie in _Wicked_ accidentally sets fire to her flammable black dress, so kind Dorothy picks up a nearby water bucket to help douse the flames, not knowing that water would be Elphie's fatal undoing ["You accursed brat! Look what you've done! I'm melting! Melting! Oh, what a world, what a world! Who would've thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? Look out, I'm going! Oh! Oh!"] and, as to be expected, feeling remorseful that she basically committed involuntary witch slaughter twice -- Nessa via her falling farmhouse thanks to being carried "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" [ ua-cam.com/video/C14m0mX717E/v-deo.html&ab_channel=JudyGarland-Topic ] by the twister summoned by Madame Morrible & Elphie via melting, or as the green girl's ashamed charlatan father The Wizard put it, "Oh, you liquidated her, eh? Very resourceful." -- only to be surprised that those around her are elated the witch half-sisters are permanently eliminated, hence "Ding Dong, The Wicked Witch is Dead" [ ua-cam.com/video/6n5EL2SKTFo/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TheMunchkins-Topic ] & "The Triumphant Return"/"Ding Dong, Emerald City" [ ua-cam.com/video/-sxh52qEMmQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MGMStudioChorus-Topic ] OR specifically for _Wicked_ "No One Mourns the Wicked" at both the start of the show & the finale).

Singing along karaoke style live to the already prerecorded final music in an ear pieces and then mixed into the prerecorded studio vocals for the final footage you see on screen is not earth shattering. Movie musicals all have the vocal/backing tracks playing for cast to sing "live" to or mime along with during the filming.... this isn't new and is not the first time.

Cynthia is a powerhouse performer and she OWNS this role! Her voice is incredible and her emotional depth make her character both sympathetic and fierce. I get the feeling Ariana is playing herself but there is no denying her own impressive vocal range that harmonizes with Cynthia's so beautifully. Do some viewing of interviews of Ariana and Cynthia, and of the director speaking about working with them as a team--they will reveal how much both she and Cynthia put into the making of their characters and the intense creative process of both. Sure--she seems more shallow or less developed but it is her very character, and the fact that she is prisoner (at first) of her upbringing and how she learns to step out of that role. Her acting is sometimes broad and slapstick (moves and moments that Ariana comes up with on her own) and sometimes quite subtle (how we can tell in the first scene that behind the smile, she is truly struggling with the news of Elphaba's death (are people born wicked, or is wickedness thrust upon them....) I am loving looking at the many you tube videos of these two, the other actors, and finding out about the making of the film and what immense talent and efforts went on behind the scenes...

Great breakdown of the movie and play. I’d seen the play and read the book, and was concerned they wouldn’t do it justice in a movie version. Boy was I wrong!! This movie is AMAZING!! I’ve seen it twice and would gladly see it again! The costumes, the enormous real life sets, the expanding on characters and storylines, the complicated dance sequences…..EVERYTHING was SO good!! Both leads, who I was skeptical about going into it absolutely deserve Oscar nominations. This is one of the few times that I’ve seen a movie that actually lived up to the hype. I saw the show three times live before they made the movie so I personally tend to watch the pro shot more than the movie. That being said, the movie adaptation was very well done. They paid a lot of attention to detail, and most of the original cast returned for the movie, which doesn’t usually happen and worked beautifully.

Thank you to Mad Morph, and a musical I enjoy a lot is Victor, Victoria, a 1982 film that became a broadway hit over a decade later. It's based on a German film written and directed by Reinhold Schünzel, who would later assist with the direction of another German film that was the basis for another musical I love, Some Like It Hot ('59 film). Also the dance scene to me shows how everyone puts black people down for our arts, fashion, skin and body and as soon as some other race tries our thing, it's now seen as cool. We shouldn’t forget that Wicked is one man’s what-if story based off of the original story. It’s the author’s imagination on how things might have happened. In the Wonderful Wizard of Oz the only witch with a name is Glinda who is the Witch of the South. The Witch of the West has only one eye in Baum’s book, by the way. The Tinman explains how he got the way he did which has nothing to do with Boq’s character. (And the shoes in the book are silver not crystal. The Wicked movie got that correct.) Baum’s book is a little on the strange side in itself.

    • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
      @TherealRNOwwfpooh 2 місяці тому

Except, the person making that argument doesn't know what he's talking about because Elphaba and Glinda are NOT related at all (they even kiss & also bang in the 1995 novel written by gay author Gregory Mcguire, because Elphie in the 1995 novel is CANON intersex [she has both male and female genitals] & both witches are CANON bisexual in ALL versions [the OG OZ books make it clear Glinda enjoys the company of other females while Dorothy Gale X Princess OZma is practically literary CANON, the 1939 MGM film's iconic line "And as for you, *my fine lady* it's true *I can't take you here & now as I'd like* but just try to stay out of my way. Just try. I'll get you, *my pretty* (and your little dog, too)!" is now given greater context, the 1995 novel is full of graphic sex scenes, the 2003 musical & the recent movie are full of GELPHIE subtext done intentionally on purpose -- as evidenced by "What Is This Feeling" alongside bits of "Popular" & "Defying Gravity" in part 1 & "For Good" in part 2 -- since they both mutually pine for Fiyero AND EACH OTHER [Even post-melting, Glinda has WET DREAMS about her time with Elphie in the later books "Son Of a Witch" & "Out of OZ"]). Even Nessarose & Elphie are only half-sisters (same mother [Melena Thropp] but different fathers [Turtleheart for Nessa & The Wizard for Elphie, respectively]).

@@trealapre Yes. That's right. GELPHIE had implicit sex in Gregory Mcguire's 1995 ADULT novel, although it's not as descriptively graphic as the encounter that FIYERABA would later have.
The source novel, what with its strong sex depictions, even answered the "Is your [womanhood] green?" question long before it was even asked (it was jokingly thrown about on the internet during the promotion for the recent film) within the chapter of the book that vividly detailed the intercourse FIYERABA had (Granted, unlike the major whitewashing he received courtesy of the stage musical & the film adaptation, where he's portrayed by Jonathan Bailey, book Fiyero is described as, quite literally, a diamond stud & a man of color, since he has brown skin and little blue diamonds all over his face, with him even asking Elphie if he should take off his shirt to show that the diamonds aren't just on his face, which prompts the line "blue diamonds lying atop a field of green" in reference to their coupling, which invariably sires their illegitimate son Liir, although Elphie claimed to be in a comatose state of depression during the time that she would've given birth to Liir, because she had just received the news that Fiyero had been slain by the Gale Force milita & had otherwise been hiding herself incognito as part of a convent of nuns).
To answer that touchy question outright: The hair above/covering Elphie's nether region is purple. Moreso than that, the ADULT novel also heavily posculates that Elphie IS hermaphroditic/intersex, which means that she has both female as well as male sex organs (as in, she would have both a vagina & a penis).

I Never have understood Wizard of Oz on my chilhood, that is why I love this movie!
And that is why The Witch and Scarecrow is always though to be the bad guys, but then they were lovers and good after all.

Thanks for all the time you put into this review. It shows!
I am going to need to watch this many times to get everything you talked about. I haven't seen the movie yet, and hearing your synopsis was going to give me a heads up about the actual plot. Not sure if this helps. But I will watch this again. It might work after all. ( I'm looking forward to seeing BOTH MOVIES , having seen the W of Oz many many times.) Have a good Christmas or whatever you celebrate.

I love how people are like Ariana Grande is so good in this movie, she was born to play this role when of course she is she’s literally playing herself an undercover mean girl who pretends to be nice. Ariana does horrible things but gets away with it because she’s popular just like Glinda.

My date and I both started to cry when we saw this scene, these ladies did such a wonderful job in this scene. I've never seen Wicked so this was an amazing introduction for me.

I don’t like how basically everyone in the movie treats Alphaba so badly and I know it’s part of the movie but still. The people could at least not laugh at her or treat her like a monster in front of her.

I completely enjoyed this explanation and recap. The ending was such a whirlwind it left me confused. I feel better now. I agree that it was a well done musical and exceeded my expectations as well

You mean to tell me Elphaba never once bathed, drank water, got any rain on her or sweat for the whole of her early life, but a splash of water to her face makes her melt?
