I still think Kristen owns popular and Idina owns defying gravity, but Cynthia and Ariana killed the ballroom scene. That was absolutely amazing. Also, Fiyero did an amazing change in just a couple of minutes, but you could see the change come over him and why he would therefore help Alphaba with the lion cub afterwards. The whole thing was truly masterful. The going to Oz scene was masterful also. The set was unbelievable, the costumes were out of this world, and the acting was really fine. I agree that there were too many breaks in defying gravity, though. All in all, I was very entertained.
My younger brother who passed away in his 20s was a HUGE Wicked fan. He used to sing Popular ALL THE TIME. A few years after he passed, my ex took me to see Wicked on Broadway and I cried during Popular experiencing what my brother loved so much and then I was carried away by Gravity (pun interned lol) and I was a puddle by the end (pun also intended lmao). Years later my oldest daughter saw it and this weekend the whole family watched the movie the theater and it gave me everything I needed from it and yes, they DEFINITELY landed Gravity and I jumped up and cheered!
It is very beautiful that your brother’s passion continues to live on through you and your family. I hope you felt him in the magic of the theatre that night :)
I like you a lot! I love the puns! I am so sorry about your brother. I love that you got to experience your brothers love for Wicked yourself. I dream that the broadway will come back to Chicago one day so I can see it!
The thoughtfulness that went into every single detail of this film is what makes it so great IMO. Everything had a reason for being done, how it was designed, etc.
One thing missed out in the mini play scene with Kristen and Idena is there's a small point where Kristen's globe wand stops working...and she keeps hitting it to get it to work again. This is probably a small nod to her doing the "ballgown" magic just before Popular in her original run on stage.
Jeff Goldblum/the Wizard also goes behind a curtain to do a little soft shoe with the balloon/moon. In this sequence, he is literally “the man behind the curtain,” who we are not supposed to pay attention to in The Wizard of Oz.
Lmaooo I thought the “thirteenth hour” was just like military time and I was in the theatre and I really said to my friend “imagine melting at 1:00 in the afternoon”
I like the nod to Governor Thropp having a heart attack/ dying when he hears the news of Elphaba flying over Emerald City. In the musical in Act 2, Nessarose tells Elphaba that their father has died.
Also it was nice the detail of Fyero talking to his horse signifying that he has history with talking animas, just like Elphaba who was raised by one. Touching a bit on why he would be touched by the tortured lion cub
Truthfully, I knew very little about Wicked before the movie was released, but because I work at a cinema and I knew people were going to ask questions and want to discuss it, I've taken the time to learn the story and the songs and seeing parts of this movie and seeing the way so many people have come together to celebrate the story of Wicked, it has been truly incredible
There's more attention to detail making sure Dr Dillamond can use things that you see during the Something Bad scene, you can see the tea cups and teapot have indents to put his hoof.
I never saw that on the teacups and teapot, so was like, "Oh just another movie magic trick, having a talking animal with no thumbs/hooves pick something up," when I saw it in the movie. It's so cool that they thought so much into it to create that inclusive design for him.
YES I SAW THAT I was like what’s the logistics of being a goat in oz after the foot pedals in the classroom then I saw the cup and I was like wow they ate down w that
"And then they expect us to just, get out of the theater like nothing happened." SO REAL!! I ended up very slowly getting myself together after the movie ended, I stayed all the way to the absolute end of the credits just so I could mentally collect myself. I sat in my car for another five minutes afterward because I was like, I can't cry anymore, I have to drive! lol. This video is such an obvious labor of love and it was a delight to watch. I don't have any theater kid friends anymore so this was the cathartic deep dive I needed. Super genuine vibes to this channel which seems so rare on UA-cam these days so I'm happy to subscribe :) definitely see you again for part 2
I knew they had cameos but when Kristin Chenoweth Idina Menzel came out I gasped so hard hands to mouth. My husband thought I had spilled my drink or something. I had to explain who they were after.
Cynthia Erivo is a Grammy winner, Emmy winner, Tony winner and hopefully an Oscar winner (if or when she's nominated and wins) She's one award away from being the youngest EGOT ever.
The first time I saw the show, I was in New York with my marching band to march in the Macy's Parade (first Michigan marching band to do so) and I was enthralled with Wicked. By the end of Defying Gravity, I knew I wanted to be on stage, and it truly changed my entire life. This movie was the perfect love letter to the Broadway show, The Wizard of Oz, and Gregory Maguire's book. I also didn't sing, but I started crying within 2 seconds of hearing the overture in the theater! I'll be a wreck when Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande sing For Good!
It is now my favorite movie of all times. As a fan of the musical, I didn't expect to love this as much as I do. I watched the original cast on Broadway, and what they've done here is remarkable. Ariana gave every bit of Kristin C. without being a copy cat, and Cynthia E. grounded the whole movie and absolutely owned it. I laughed, I cried, I was sad and happy. By the end, I was left breathless. Love love love.
I never connected a detail of One Short Day … in the 1938 film every day was short in the Emerald City. “We get up at noon and start to work at 1, take an hour for lunch and then at 2 we’re done”
I think the opening reference to "Ding Dong, the Witch Is Dead" isn't actually musical, but the kids are shown ringing bells and shouting "The Witch is dead!" (so "ding-dong", etc.)
The kid says "come out...come out", which are the first two sung lyrics of Ding Dong the Witch is Dead. Also, the first five notes immediately after that are the notes from the chorus of that same song.
37:30 one thing I don’t think anyone has mentioned yet, the background on-stage costumes are similar to the costume designs from The Wiz Live! (NBC), specifically the costumes worn by the the munchkins in “He’s the Wizard”
Also when Fiyero is first introduced the shot of him dragging his feet on the floor feels like a clear foreshadowing and nod to him eventually turning into the Scarecrow.
I just love when a good musical gets translated into a good movie i was worried at first but having watched it I'm very happy with it can't wait for part two
Having seen Wicked on Broadway 11 times, I was so, so worried about how the movie would be, but they did a masterful job. So many tears- happy and sad.
I’m not sure if someone else has said this but I’m sure the reason for all the practical is two fold. One to pay homage to the original musical and the movie. And also it’s hard to use a green screen when one of your main characters is green😅
@@straphyrtrue but shiz, Nessa rose, boq, and eventually Dorothy have blue within their main outfits and theming. Sooooo…. blue screens wouldn't work either.

I think you'll need to need another deep dive into this movie later. There were lots of shout-outs to other movies. The flying monkeys breaking through the windows - The Birds, Tippi Hendren in the famous green dress stuck in the phone booth. Elphaba IS the green dress. The real history of Oz and Animals shown after the Wizard facade is broken - The Thor movie where Hela's participation had been hidden. You called out the Superman shout-out. I'm sure there are more.
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it, but the 4 professors on the OG sign with the Hogwartsesque colors coordinate with the map! Each region has a typical color associated with it- quadling aka south is red, winkie is yellow, munchkinland is blue, and gilkinland is purple. In One Short Day, there’s a brief moment when you can see signs for each region with their associated colors. I don’t know if that was just a stylist choice or not but it’s an interesting detail imo!
I think what Schwartz told everyone to listen for at the beginning of the film is the first few notes of Ding, Dong, The Witch Is Dead being played in the instrumental.
As a fan of the musical, I am SO excited for people experiencing this story for the first time. They left breadcrumbs but also saved the great twists for Part 2. I know what’s coming but stoked for people to see it come together
I learned about Wicked in 2007 when I and my HS marching band did a show using No One Mourns, Popular, Defying Gravity. I then learned that it was a Broadway play, so I bought the CD and fell in love and then also bought the book, In 2017 I FINALLY got to go to NYC and see the Broadway show and I loved it. 6 months later I brought my father to NYC to see it (My dad died 4 years later and this was the last thing we did together). and 6 months after that I brought my mother who is a MASSIVE Wiz of Oz fan, to see the show and bought her Front row center stage tickets to the show. To me Wicked is my favorite piece of media. When I first went I fond the Living Cogs hoodie for sale and I had worn it daily from the day that I bought it at the Gershwin till about 3 months ago, It has since been thinned out and full of holes in the elbows and pockets. I was able to replace it with a brand new exact copy of the Living Cogs and I will continue to wear this daily until it matches my original. 10/10 movie, best movie I have seen all year. Excited for part 2.
My first time seeing Wicked was the original Chicago cast in the spring of 2005. Stephanie J Block, Kendra Kassebaum, Carol Kane, Libby from Sabrina the teenage witch, even a young Adam Lambert in the ensemble. It was wild. This movie was such an incredible experience. It was my partner’s first time seeing anything Wicked and he absolutely loved it. We’ve now seen it twice and plan to go again.
48:29 Another fun detail about Jeff Goldbloom’s closeup magic. He tried to sneak in an extra magic trick involving a green rope in the same scene as the coin trick. It was ultimately cut from the film, but if you look closely at Elphaba’s hand in one scene you can still see she’s clutching that green rope.
At EXACTLY 1:00 in to 'No One Mourns the Wicked' on the movie soundtrack you can hear trumpets blare the tune of "Ding dong the witch is" with the "is" being held out and no "dead," probably because it would have been a copyright issue to go all the way. But that is so totally what Schwartz was talking about, imo.
I’ve been in love with wicked since it came out. I saw it for the first time in 2007 in London and then two more times in LA at the Pantages. This got me through my high school years. I’ve been able to meet Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth and tell them how much it meant to me, their cast recording got me through so many hard times. And I was literally crying as a baby watching the movie because it brought back so many memories and Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo did an amazing job.
I went to see Wicked Friday with my best friend of 20 years and my significant other. I spent the entire movie cuddled under his arm and staring at the screen, until any notes from "For Good" appeared, when I would grab my best friend's hand and we'd look at each other and cry.
Hmmm, that's not Stephanie J. Block, and anyway SJB was an early Elphaba not a Nessa. I don't think it's Michelle Federer, the original Nessa, either, but I could be wrong.
Not exactly a Wicked easter egg, but still a fun detail is that Jonathan Bailey's mentioned in interviews that his horse here is the same horse he worked with on Bridgerton!
One easter egg I never see mentioned concerns that mechanical carriage in Glinda's bubble at the beginning. In the later books in Baum's Oz series, Glinda has a flying chariot drawn by storks. ❤
My best friend in high school made me a mix cd with a bunch of Broadway smashers in a successful attempt to indoctrinate me. Wicked was all over that cd. Flash forward, 15 years later, 33 year old father of 3, I'm sitting in a movie theater on a Friday afternoon alone, having the time of my life watching this incredible film.
The scene when The Wizard is behind the curtain dancing in shadow. The bit where he juggles the moon is very reminisant of the globe scene in 'The great dictator'
Wicked for our family is a LOT like watching what it has been like for my child with autism come into adulthood. How so many people vilify outliers, just because they’re different.
We need more praise and respect for Cynthia’s performance. The wrong casting of Elphaba would’ve ruined the movie. Luckily, Cynthia is the perfect cinematic version of Elphaba.
thanks for this i have to go back and see the movie for the 4th time😅 i know it is not related but the library dance reminded me for a fraction of a second of the Bye Bye Birdie dancing Ann Magaret at the club.
I love that they included the young Elphaba scenes as you can see the impact that Dolcibear had on Elphaba & why Elphaba stands for the Animals.
I still think Kristen owns popular and Idina owns defying gravity, but Cynthia and Ariana killed the ballroom scene. That was absolutely amazing. The thoughtfulness that went into every single detail of this film is what makes it so great IMO. Everything had a reason for being done, how it was designed, etc.
The stained glass in The Wizard and I. Omg
The scene where The Wizard presents his model of the Emerald City reminded me SO MUCH of Walt Disney presenting his concept for EPCOT.
I thought EXACTLY the same! The movie's Wizard is a representation of corporate visionaries who believe they have the best intentions.
That’s exactly what I was thinking! It was reminiscent!
I turned to my husband at that scene and was like “it’s giving experimental prototype community of tomorrow!”
@susalkasarahi lol that's exactly how I thought it too... and it looks so much like the model of Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.
Makes sense when Disney was originally about musicals before their switch to Pixar
I saw the line of Fiyero saying he ate grass as a kid as a hint to his story in part two, as well as Glinda not liking that he was thinking.
Elphie tells him to get stuffed when they first meet...
@ not to mention several lyrics he sings in Dancing Through Life.
And the images of wheat being sewn into his white sleeves.
One thing missed out in the mini play scene with Kristen and Idena is there's a small point where Kristen's globe wand stops working...and she keeps hitting it to get it to work again. This is probably a small nod to her doing the "ballgown" magic just before Popular in her original run on stage.
I interpreted it as a nod to the fact that Glinda would have no power if it wasn't for Elphaba

Your Leno down the hill joke made me literally Laugh OUT LOUD. Dare I say "too soon"? Naaaaaaaaa.
26:46 i believe that's an emperor tamarin monkey 😅 i love those little guys their cute
Was just coming in to say this!
Same!
you two need to be hosting together more often
At EXACTLY 1:00 in to 'No One Mourns the Wicked' on the movie soundtrack you can hear trumpets blare the tune of "Ding dong the witch is" with the "is" being held out and no "dead," probably because it would have been a copyright issue to go all the way. But that is so totally what Schwartz was talking about, imo.
This Breakdown has me defying gravity!!
Shoebill storks are my favourite bird! They're actually super human-friendly and intelligent ❤
I really want to look back the past few years and see if there was ever a time when Ariana was calling herself Ariana Garande 😂😂
I can’t stop seeing Glinda’s wand as a double-bladed lightsaber after the cornfield fight
I saw the stage production in 2005 in Toronto as a freshman in high school, wicked is what drove my passion for musicals
Eric and Jessica are so fun together
Jessica, please find out who in the land of “OZ” is braiding Elfaba’s hair? I think it deserves its own video.
Agreed
I didn't start noticing the green and pink in the gardens of Shiz, I noticed it in the first few minutes with the pink and green lens flares
Return to Oz is incredible!!!
Agreed!
I saw it last night and definitely had some tears flowing. Can't wait to see how they handle part 2.
And I was literally crying as a baby watching the movie because it brought back so many memories and Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo did an amazing job.
the two of you together brings me so much joy. I love y'alls friendship!
46:18 Exactly! 😂😂😂 I'm like, can I just walk back in for Part 2 after the intermission? Lol!
I went to see Wicked Friday with my best friend of 20 years and my significant other. I spent the entire movie cuddled under his arm and staring at the screen, until any notes from "For Good" appeared, when I would grab my best friend's hand and we'd look at each other and cry.
28:28 The rotating library forms an OZ shape at one point.
Hmmm, that's not Stephanie J. Block, and anyway SJB was an early Elphaba not a Nessa. I don't think it's Michelle Federer, the original Nessa, either, but I could be wrong.
I choose to believe it’s the current Nessarose Natalie Ortega even though it definitely isn’t
It’s Marissa Bode
@@itskaylonthat’s the Nessa in the movie
i noticed when they dropped the room assignment lists when they first come to shiz, glinda is listed on it with ama clutch!
I started tearing once she saw her younger self while falling
i just wanna talk about how amazing of a job John Powell did with the score!! it’s so seamless and it’s familiar but fresh! it’s amazing!
Something I noticed at the end is that all the main players exit stage left, which I think is significant to theatre
Not exactly a Wicked easter egg, but still a fun detail is that Jonathan Bailey's mentioned in interviews that his horse here is the same horse he worked with on Bridgerton!
Chekhov’s balloon is iconic
I think its important to note Morrible changing the weather to make Elphaba seem more sinister
We need more praise and respect for Cynthia’s performance. The wrong casting of Elphaba would’ve ruined the movie. Luckily, Cynthia is the perfect cinematic version of Elphaba.
My take on the reference Schwartz is making is to the munchkin kids literally ringing bells, referencing “Ding, Dong, The Witch Is Dead”
thanks for this i have to go back and see the movie for the 4th time😅 i know it is not related but the library dance reminded me for a fraction of a second of the Bye Bye Birdie dancing Ann Magaret at the club.
