A clue you didn’t bring up is the mom telling the son “it’s okay for you to go too far for the people you love.” He’s listening and learning as his parents try to raise him. While she never envisions him sacrificing himself, that, coupled with his dad saying, “there’s a good man inside of you,” and “it wouldn’t kill you to stand up for her,” really demonstrates his internal growth as a character. I didn’t find this film scary in a traditional sense, but I was scared for Chloe, and I also found myself not breathing- especially during the scene with the cling wrap. I didn’t take a deep breath till I left. This was very well done, though I agree, not a horror.
I thought the mom saying “it’s okay to go too far…” was evidence to tell the audience how much crap the mom was full of because it’s usually not okay. It’s implied that she threw someone or something under the bus at work to be able to move into that house.
But you have a point. He went so far that he went back in time to change outcomes for his sister. I think Chloe died in the original timeline because Tyler was not there to knock the orange juice to the floor when Ryan spiked it.
nah. those are just red herring. Why would your brother keep hiding in your closet and wait there till you get drugged to then kill his friend? If he already knew his friend is a serial killer why wait till that moment to warn himself?
the thing about this movie is.. as you’re trying to figure out the story line, it keeps giving you new clues that change what you think.. like (MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD) at fist i thought it was some old spirit that’s been there forever, then it change to Nadia the dead friend, then it changed to “oh.. maybe its Chloe trying to save herself”, then the final scene happened and my jaw dropped cause I was wrong and everything connected when it showed it was actually the Brother
Yeh i had the same thought that it was like an previous owner trying to get to grips with "why is my house empty? Who are these people in my house?". Then figured it must be nadia when it trashed his room and was trying to save chloe. The ending shook me to my core though. I just wasnt expecting to see anything (theres numerous times in the film where people go to the mirror and theres nothing there). But then for it to be him i was like "holy fuck!" But also like "yeh that makes total sense how did i not see that coming?!"
It’s a mixture of a very tamed version of In a Violent Nature from the killer’s perspective and The Bent-neck Lady from The Haunting of Hill House.
I very much got Haunting of Hill House vibes from this.
Agreed. I'm reading the Hill House book at the moment for my audiobook podcast (DOWN TO SLEEP)
And I super got classic ghost story vibes from this, rather than modern day ghost story,
That's why the marketing is such a shame cos it's going to reach the wrong audience.
Neon are usually amazing at marketing but I'm really annoyed at them for this one.
@MadMorphMovieClubomg you do Down To Sleep too how didn’t I notice I’m reading the Haunting of hill house books now too!
Absolutely I agree and said the same thing 😂
Loved the ending, a fresh twist. A beautiful emotional roller coaster
Finally a decent recap/analysis of this film. Thank you!
i have seen so many dude bro movie reviewers hating on the film or just not understanding it! I totally agree that it should not have been marketed as horror, but i think it was great overall!
I enjoyed this movie and the twist, despite the false advertisement. I really loved the concept of seeing everything from the ghost's perspective, but I do wish they did a little more with it- more spooky, supernatural events.
I feel the same way! I hope they revisit this premise with a different family and play around more with what the presence does.
idk i feel like scary elements would've pulled from the family narrative and cheapen the ending reveal about ryan
@@CandesamoTheGreat Not every ghost encounter is horror or malevolent. Also, when the spirit is a family member, it tends to be benevolent unless the person is pure evil, as in the case of Don Decker. His case is quite bone-chilling.
I agree but i think the amount of supernatural elements was just right, it gave the movie a more believable naturalistic approach
@@nickperez915 absolutely, i think the movie is great just as it is. More spooky event would have been overkill, i liked the subtle approach
Enjoyed it a lot . Different type of film. The camera angles were cool
i can’t speak highly enough of this movie. it was absolutely incredible in my opinion and i never lost interest . it was slightly creepy at times and both the trailers and movie did a great job of hiding the ending and storyline. Props to the director for taking a massive chance on this and i think it hit the mark.
I just came across your channel and decided to give it a watch. I really was not disappointed, i also decided to subscribe. If you can describe a movie like you did in this video, i will be watching all your videos. I actually felt like i was watching the movie. The way you narrate kept me glued to the screen. This is a movie i really i haven't heard of. My family lived in a house that had a prescence. I think we experience fear the most when we can't see but we can feel its presence. Where can i watch this movie. I live in Toronto, Canada. Thank you for an amazing recap.😊
Yes, the effort taken in editing must’ve been tedious, but so enjoyable as a viewer.
Same here 🤗
I really like the premise specifically the inability the ghost has on the world
@28:17 to 29:45 That's the purpose of horror movies, to make the audience feel uncomfortable, make them feel helpless, want to help but can't.
Ryan is the "horror" of the movie. Throughout the movie, he seems like a regular troubled teen, getting high, trying to get laid, going a little too far on spiking her drinks. We the audience may think he's just lacking maturity on the consequence this could lead to (OD). These traits/actions are common in SOME teens. So we the viewers see him as "yeah he's a jerk". We don't pay too much mind to this. We're distracted by "The Presence " and how much or how little we can relate to their family dynamic. HOWEVER, in the last 20 minutes we get to see Ryan's true nature ,it's slow ,it builds, she's pasted out, he moves her body, you think he's going to R@pe her and then the reveal . He's there to kill and he done it before. The horror in this is that that kid Ryan , can be one of your kids friend and you wouldn't know it.
The ending for me was mixed feelings. The gut wrenching scream of the mother was heart breaking. The Presence (Tyler) leaving the house was satisfied. He accomplished his goal. Saving his sister.
Well done movie, is it a typical horror movie? No its not but there's some horro in it for sure. Its the type of horror that can happen to any of us and that is scary 🍒
I loved this movie. Just got out. My friend called me up a few days ago and said “I just watched this movie and I want you to come see it with me. I’m not gonna tell you anything more”. I didn’t watch the trailer or anything so I had zero expectations going in. The only other thing he told me was “ it’s not a horror movie” which I think helped set the tone for me. If I’d seen the trailer I wouldn’t have bothered with the film.
Wooo new video :D I always look forward to your perspective!
Yay, I thought you had given up on this channel, so glad to you are continuing with it.
Nah, just haven't liked any new movies recently or found them interesting enough! (plus I been super sick)
@MadMorphMovieClub haha good to know we are only getting quality. Hope you are feeling better.
I thought the movie was absolutely great , I think the only reason it’s getting somewhat bad reviews is bc people think it’s gna be a horror movie which it is not
I went in fairly blind; I did watch the trailer beforehand, and maybe I was expecting a bit of traditional horror too, but definitely wasn’t disappointed whatsoever
@ thank god yeah it definitely doesn’t deserve the negative reviews it’s getting
@@justindixon6777exactly the same here.
I really enjoyed this movie. It resonated with me at times “feeling” someone and the ringing in my ears. & no I do not have tinnitus. Thank you for your review. 😊
It truly was one of the scariest movies I’ve seen this year, as it is January.
In all seriousness, I enjoyed this movie a lot.
So glad you're back doing what you love, Morphy! You've been missed.
This would be a difficult watch- the"scene". But I also think it looks like a great movie. I have been watching more movies lately, but had not heard of this one. I had thought she was coming back to save herself, or that it was possibly the mom at first. I very much enjoy your movie/TV show reviews and analysis. 😊
My maternal Grandfather stayed around after he passed, until my maternal Grandmother joined him many years later. He never bothered any of us, except that the footsteps would occasionally freak my out when I was home alone..... Growing up in Washington with tons of serial killers up and down the I-5 corridor kinda makes a girl a little on edge😂
I've never seen this movie, but once you relayed what the medium said about time not being linear for ghosts I figured the ghost was likely the brother (one of the siblings in general, but I was leaning towards the brother because the ghost was so upset at him that he ruined his room, like it was disappointed and frustrated that he could be so selfish and mean. Looks like he regretted how he lived after he died). Sounds like a good movie. I'll watch it in a year when I forget this video lol.
The idea that ghosts do not experience time any similar way to himans, is mind opening
Oh my. I didn’t get the ending initially. I thought the presence is a ghost that can change its appearance depends on who is watching through the mirror…
My theatre had multiple showings for this film over the weekend. Now they only have a 7pm showing which leads me to assume it will be on streaming soon... 😮
Correct!! This Movie is pure Garbage 🗑
Turns out standing up for his sister would kill him
really enjoyed your vid
That ending made me cry
That’s wild
Right?!
Hurray, new Madmorph content 🎉🎉 there goes my reading for my test 😊
Hmmm, this became very heavy. Thank you for the movie. Does it mean Tyler is in a loop? Like if he didn't die, he won't have been able to wake his sister 🤔
The murder twist is very "The Woman in the Window" but the rest of the film reminds me a lot of "A Ghost Story" from 2017 which is also seen from ghost's perspective although not as literally as here. It's mostly about grief and permanence, really worth a watch.
I got a ghost story vibes too!
This movie was actually really good. The cinematography, one take shots, Eary vibes, Acting for the most part ( i didnt like how the blonde white guy talked, he made me feel awkwardly uncomfortable). Good movie if you wanna chill
Really liked the recap, probably more than the actual movie iitself. Great video!
I’m glad for your revelation that the ghost is actually the brother! Yes it does make sense! Thanks. I live a good ghost story. Some of my favorites are We Have a Ghost with David Harbour, A Ghost Story with Rooney Mara, The Others with Nicole Kidman.
Very well done. I watch a lot of movie commentary and this was top drawer. Now, if you can tell me why there is a poster of Leda on Chloe's wall I'd be grateful.
In regard to other movies I’d like to hear your take on…..I was enchanted with the movie Nine Days and its connection to the Japanese movie from the 90’s After Life. I was so moved by both movies and loved to see that Edson Oda was inspired to write his screenplay for Nine Days after seeing After Life. It’s a lesson in how to be inspired by something and how you can build on it and make something uniquely your own. One needs to watch After Life first then watch Nine Days (multiple times).
She definitely said, "he came back to see me," right? Cause she was all like my baby, my baby. None of the family realized the ghost saved the day. They couldn't, bc Tyler would be the only one able to tell the story of how the ghost woke him up to save his sister.
I enjoyed this movie so much!!!
People are so used to cheap jumpscares and over the top gore so it doesnt suprise me that its not being well received
It's Pure Garbage 🗑
Loved this movie, liked the ghost pov and i didn't mind its naturalistic and subtle approach. The plot surprised me as well, i usually figure out who dunit halfway through the movie but i didn't expect the final act. I think it is more like hereditary rather than the conjuring.
I’m so glad I saw your video. I had seen the commercial recently and it really scared me 😂 I was like nope never watching that one and then today I was like oh I can handle this explanation/recap tho 😮😮😮 I sort of wish I had gone to the theater now. This is a great movie. And aren’t the real horrors of life what should scare us most? Idk. Hug your loved ones.
As a person who would 100% be triggered by the ending twist, I appreciate videos like this because I can appreciate the movie as art without causing a mental breakdown lol
I thought the son being a ghost was stuck in purgatory, reliving a memory in order to reveal to himself its purpose (the exceptional person his dad always thought he could be) fulfilling that at the end of the movie he’s able end his confusion of being a good or bad person and can now rest in heaven.
English is my second language, I didn't get what the psychic said when she came back so didn't realise the presence was someone who hadn't died 🤦🏻♀️ so the end was a bit confusing for me 🙈 I didn't get what the mom said at the end either 😂... Have to improve my listening haha thanks for summarising and analysing.
I'm so very over this type of marketing. It absolutely ruined Hereditary for me. The trailers all set it up as some slasher movie and casts Charlie to be this weird, tongue-clucking psycho terrorizing her family because she was in cahoots with demons. Because of that, when it was a slow meditational analysis of a family coming to terms with grief while being set up be a cabal, I had already checked out. It took years for me to enjoy it for what it was. Fortunately Toni Collette's acting will bring me back to all her movies.
Just watched it, didn’t really watch any of the trailers.
Honestly was expecting jump scares and the normal horror movie cliches. The movie itself was pretty good. The silence was deafening, it some how had a humours aspect during some scenes.
The camera work was fabulously done, sweeping and panning from room to room.
No I was disappointed thought it was gonna be something else
That's heartbreaking 😢
Nah that's a paradox cuz if the dude didn't die saving his sister he couldn't have woke himself up to save his sister and if he didn't save his sister he wouldn't have died and been able to wake himself up 😅
I also felt like that's a potential reason for why he couldn't affect the human world in certain scenarios too, the parts that really had to take place for him to end up where he was (a ghost) , he can only watch the out of time echo of it, the recording of it, haunting the ghost itself, and not change it.
You missed the part when she said that the presence experiences time differently and all at once, that they don't know why they are here or want they have to, that it has happened yet. Which was the crash through the window.
. Humans have a linear perception of time and space. This concept of omnipresent is something new. It is a part of most religious . Christianity goes even further with God being everywhere while also being Jesus while on earth. This is different than a paradox as that involves time travel, not omnipresent
Is it the same ghost? Maybe one of the previous victims was the first ghost. After Chloe is saved, that ghost departs. Then the son is there to say goodbye to his mother, and his “mission “ complete, he also departs .
Thoroughly enjoyed the in depth review and breakdown of the movie. Would love to see you review A Ghost Story with Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara - it’s from 2017 but also from the perspective of the ghost or “presence”.
Great the movie I had no idea what I was walking into besides "horror" and that's because I refuse to watch horror trailers and let them set a false narrative like so many do. I highly recommend going into horror movies as blind as you can, it's really made a difference in how I experience the movie for better or worse. Almost never for worse.
I loved the idea of the ghost POV especially because the ghost and the audience are learning who the family is and are experiencing the emotions of what's unfolding at the same time. The Bully/revenge porn scene left the audience feeling the same anger and you as a audience get to feel that anger not only expressed but acted out by the ghost, helping to give you a emotional connection to it in a way that couldn't happen without the way this movie was directed, without seeing the movie through the ghosts eyes.
“It was the weed” not the wind
I would have cut all the scenes with the psychic, and you're right that her return scene spoils the ending, I'm guessing it was added because test audiences were confused
I loved the movie and your explanation was spot on. 🍿 🍿
I loved the movie. I thought it was very original. I broke down at the ending, because it was so sudden and jarring. I'm saddened by the majority of reviews by people who expected a horror movie.
Didnt expect the breakdown
I hate when movies that are not actually "horror" are marketed as terrifying. I loved the movie, but people who go to be scared will be disappointed
what does the picture mean at the end? it was like a recording or something with the number 765
She said it’s just the weed, not the wind 10:13
i felt like the information about the mother was left in the air, but otherwise i was pleasantly surprised by this movie
Great movie. Could have been amazing without the psychic’s return scene.
It felt very out of place!
Loved the presence POV. Wasn’t a big fan of the actress who played the psychic. And the psycho was so cringe. I agree that it made me feel a sadness and uncomfortable feeling which I always appreciate. All movies don’t need a happy ending, but one that impacts you in some way.
One thing I noticed was how fast that ghost went upstairs to trash Tylers room but seemed to go slowly downstairs to wake Tyler up for help
What about the mom?? Is anyone else wondering what the mom was illegally doing behind the scenes?
I think it was a bit of a narrative red herring and mystery, as I kept thinking her company would be responsible or involved somehow in the girls deaths, plus adds background of her being detached, lacking morals and how she has raised her son and more reason for the distance between her and the husband.
Its something new, something different. We've never seen a movie from the perspective of the ghost or spirit. I enjoyed it. The time travelling ghost idea is different, but will be confusing and someone won't like like.
Best movie I've seen this year 👌
My partner and I really wanted to like it, but it just didn’t catch our eyes as much. We were definitely left with an empty feeling, but still wanting more. The trailer gave us a little false hope for sure :( maybe would have enjoyed it more if it was advertised as the family drama it was.
Amazing film, very unique
This movie wasn't scary at all for those wondering but it does have a great plot, acting & twist.
Luckily I didn’t see any trailers & went in completely blind
Single inferno soon ? 🙏
You explained it very well but cant fight the fact, movie was bland and boring.
It was Definitely Boring
Loved loved loved the movie. Original and sincere.
I didn’t understand the cut scene at the end it looked like a mixtape
I really dont think the movie had false advertising.
It IS a horror movie
No, it's not "scary".
It's got a slow burn feeling of dread and imminent danger.
You can FEEL fate in this movie.
Im telling you, this is horror like you've never seen before.
It is literally not horror
It's a supernatural suspense thriller
And that's okay
Great movie
It's a movie for people who have trouble sleeping 😴 😅😅😅
Cool emotional , I hate sycos. Truly sad ending
Im sorry but i dont buy it... that the prescence has to be "Tyler the whole time".
I think there is room for other interpretations.
Wait so he was the ghost the entire time even when he was alive?
Correct. Time moves differently for the ghost, we the audience are the ghost experiencing time differently also.
This "presence" has some non traditional rules to it, and I think a lot of it is guilt based, it's the brothers fault that this "friend" is in their lives and home.
It’s such a mix of anger and absolute amazement towards this movie. I went in thinking it was going to be a horror film and that I’d walk out shaking from fear, and I found myself physically shaking and nauseated towards the end of the movie. The fear felt at the end wasn’t what was expected, and I absolutely love it. It’s a new twist and it’s NEEDED with movies these days. Nothing could prepare you for the end, and that’s what makes an amazing movie. It broke my heart and destroyed any expectation, and it may well be my favorite movie now.
My Condolences 😅😅
Do one on Nosferatu 2024 film & how satanic & symbolic it is.
I disagree. I believe the presence was Nadia and now there are two ghosts, Nadia and the brother.
I actually really liked this movie. Went in completely blind but was expecting jump scares. Instead I got a really beautiful movie about family, love and healing. From your description the marketing is all wrong which is a huge shame.
i hope this director does more horror, this film rocked
It wasn't horror!!!
Movie sucked, nuff said. Also Soder-borg is a hack director!
Good film
Boring 😴 Film
BORING 😴 BORING 😴 BORING 😴 BORING 😴
Just saw it. What a terrible movie
Terrible movie
I didn't like the movie
At least say why?
Yeah it was a mediocre film. Ghost films aren’t my cup of tea anyway.
Granted, the marketing made it out to be a horrifying experience, but it is first a drama with some supernatural elements. If you go to the main NEON channel with the trailer, I still have not seen the movie, but made a dead-on prediction, lol.
Lol I love your confidence in your own opinions, - you don't like something and you're not going to explain why. I love it.
I didn't either, disappointing. It looked like some amateur movie makers had filmed it
Best movie in 2025 so far
Worst movie of 2025😂😂
Why do you call it Ending Explained when you essentially just recap the entire movie? Clickbait SEO bullshit. Unsubbed
Why don't you skip to the end, then? Also, sometimes you need context to understand the ending explanation. People get upset over random things
Good riddance! Don't let the door hit you on your way out
Your reaction is idiotic. Skip to the ending if you don't want a detailed explanation. You are an unappreciative cnt.
Later crybaby 😂😂
Fine. There’s two timelines. In the first one Chloe died because Ghost Tyler wasn’t there to knock down the spiked orange juice. Tyler died at some point in that original timeline and went back in time to change outcomes. He has some hatred towards himself when he knocks down his trophies and tears down a picture poster of him swimming, that doesn’t come from nowhere.
This is not some bs closed time loop where he was predestined to be a ghost and felt guilt out of nowhere.
"ghost" are demons 😊
