  • Elden Ring's DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, will be BIG. But how big? How long? How girthy? Let's look into Fromsoftware's history of DLC making and see if we can calculate a rate to which apply to the new DLC. Then we can maybe (educatedly) guess how long it's going to be.

    I like how this indicates no one as even a hint of an idea what this DLC is doing. And in a sense, that's kinda good. From sequel-sized to a SotFS rework to mirror/spirit world of the entire game to something entirely unpredictable. It's crazy.
    I also enjoy the metrics running parallel with personal experience, since my first playthrough exceeded 200h. Then again, I played exhaustively and found nearly everything there was to find. So if the DLC replicates this by giving me another ~100h... that'd be nuts. If the DLC also buffs multiplayer as the PvP community is praying it does, we're looking at monumental potential here.

      I very much doubt it’s going to get a SotFS version. I feel like people really don’t understand why DS2 had that. Not to mention the multiple technical issues and visual effects of the game being fixed alongside just straight up lore that didn’t make sense in the context of it being a sequel to DS1 being written. As well as Bandai pushing for this.
      No souls game before or after has had that level of changes and ER will be not different. Nor do I think it’s that necessary.

      @@simonealcazar816 The point of mentioning SotFS is relative to a base-game update so large that it means replaying it from base will offer a distinct-enough experience. I get how this is vague, because while some people imagine this might mean new questlines like Asimi and Kalé, others think of weapons, stat balance and enemy placement. "Improvement" here is relative. If devs had said the update is for current gen and PC only, now that would dramatically increase the likelihood of the base game being restructured for whatever reason.
      That aside, I don't think people argue it's "necessary" so much as they argue of the possibility.

    I would not be surprised if it was over 50 hours.
    A lot of the cut content in Elden Ring is not just cut in general because of technical aspects or changes in storyline, it's fully capable of being in the game. So the way I see it, you have 2 years of development, 6 months of which is stuff that already practically exists and just has to be slotted in and QC'd. Then you have actual DLC dropped on top of that. Then you consider the open world nature and the likely places any new content can be -- underground, deeper underground, up in the sky, in dreams, in different times and suddenly travel time comes into play as you might have to commute to new areas that are far to reach with no grace waypoints to rely on.
    All in all, my guess is 30 hours of new content, 10 hours of expanded content or pre-developed content integration, and 10 hours of traveling collectively for at least 50 hours.

You have to remember that they have many times more staff working on one project than even during Dark Souls 3 and more than twice the time with a game formula that can create content very quickly. A massive part of Elden Ring's development was making it possible with huge engine upgrades. They have all the terrain generation, side dungeon creation tools that they need to make massive areas in short amounts of time, while having enough artists, game designers and animators to create a massive amount of characters and bosses in a much shorter time frame.

    2 years is a lot to develop a DLC/Expansion. Considering that it took me 160-180 hours to complete the main game 100% beat all the bosses, explore every cave, collect all items, weapons etc.... I think keeping that in mind this expansion that took 2 years to make should be atleast a 70-80 hour experience.
    In terms of bosses, catacombs, new weapon variety, new spells, armor etc this game should have atleast 40-50% the quantity the main game had. Kinda like how Insomniac treated Miles Morales after Spiderman 2018. This game should not be treated as a simple DLC but Elden Ring 1.5

I’m expecting more like 25-30 hours. The length of a game is not necessarily a good metric of it’s quality, 30% of Elden Ring could’ve been shaved off and you wouldn’t have missed anything since most of the bosses are either reused, or they are regular enemies, and most of the mini dungeons are very samey.

    If DLC follows open world format, it would make sense we have miniature version of Shardbearers, aka, player has some degree of freedom which soulless demigod they encounter first, gathering necessary "boss-fragments" required to face Godwyn.

With 12m+ copies in circulation this expansion has the potential to be the most successful post-launch additional content a triple A developer has ever released. Judging by two years of development POST LAUNCH meaning they have all creation tools ready, Im guessing 4-5 legacy dungeons (at least two being bigger than farum azula), 3-4 more main areas comparable to limgrave, altus, etc. and 30-40 side dungeons and caves. Each main area will roughly have 10 field/night bosses. This comes out to around 90 more boss fights.

    • @xx_amongus_xx6987
      @xx_amongus_xx6987 6 місяців тому

      Those are crazy high expectations. Elden Ring as it is has 6 legacy dungeons, 5 main areas, 50 dungeons/caves, and I'm not going to bother mentioning the boss fights. What you're asking for is literally just another game the entire size of Elden Ring with all of the story and items attached. If they're going that far, why wouldn't they make an entire new game instead of a DLC? You can believe what you do, but I think you will be very disappointed upon the release if that is what you are expecting.
      Also it's entirely possible that they have not had two years development post launch. That is because the main game was still being finished post launch, they weren't working on DLCs, or at least if they were, it wasn't a big focus. And maybe they didn't even plan on making a DLC, instead wanting to work on something completely different, or making Elden Ring 2. With everyone asking for a DLC, their plans would have changed. And what do you mean by creation tools? Because besides upgrading their engine, they had their creation tools at the start of Elden Ring's development. They would have to make entirely new things for a DLC, they probably wouldn't reuse anything major except for the mini-dungeon stuff.

    • @nafinbomb
      @nafinbomb 6 місяців тому

      @@xx_amongus_xx6987 Elden ring is pure quantity of quality so unless they change that philosophy dlc will have tons of new bosses (mostly reused) which means there must be a lot of dungeons, caves, legacy dungeons, and areas to support that. The main game is 165 bosses so its not that unreasonable to think there may be half of that number in the dlc. For there to be at least 82 new bosses there needs to be way more than 2 areas and more than 3 legacy dungeons. Lower bound is 3 new areas and 4 legacy dungeons but I can see areas getting up to 4 and depending on the size of legacy dungeons up to 5 of them.

    My first blind playthrough of ER was about 130 hours? I had by far not seen everything at that time, and my second completionist run also took about 120 hours to complete, because I was getting everything.
    Honestly if we get a Liurnia sized map, that would probably already add what, 30 to 40 hours of gameplay and exploration? With all the caves, bosses, underground shit, different dimensions and whatever else they might throw in there.
    And I remember exactly that my first Dark Souls 3 run was about 34 hours?
    Now, I'm a veteran with these games, but I played them all upon release, so no prior knowledge.
    But to wrap up my point, I feel like if we get a DLC of about 30 - 40 hours of Playtime, that sounds like a DS3 sized DLC dslkjfgh
    Since they already mentioned originially having planned multiple DLC's but then made them into 1, and the eagerness of FromSoft and their inverstors to increase ER's lifespan as much as possible, it's not far off either, no?
    I think it can be useful to also remember that - if I remember correctly - in one of their reports they mentioned having decided to make one huge DLC probably also impacts what we can expect.
    Imagine DS2 having just one DLC but it's all three areas in one big package. That's what I'm expecting when it comes to size of the DLC, anyway.

    • @tinminator8905
      @tinminator8905 6 місяців тому

      DS2's DLCs were all made in a much shorter time frame than 2 years, on top of work for SotFS. Then you also have to remember that they have many more times the amount of staff that they had back then. I would be shocked if after that time, they don't at least deliver 50% of the amount of content Elden Ring had. Edit: All of DS2 DLC was released within 6 and a half months from the initial release. I would keep my expectations in check, but if we go off that the Elden Ring DLC will break all proportions of any expansion any game has ever had.

    • @shnobrin7928
      @shnobrin7928 6 місяців тому

      @@tinminator8905 Keeping expectations in check is definitely super important when it comes to DLC releases and such.
      But given the hightened amount of work that has to go into everything Elden Ring compared to DS2 for example, I would say with their increased staff and their longer time to work on things such as textures, areas, buildings, assets, NPC's, voice cast, composing music, testing and balancing their new weapons, ashes of war, spells, armors, talismans, bosses, enemies and whatever other new content might be coming our way, I think the time might actually be very similar when it comes to how fast they produce new content. Like, yes they are much more experienced and have a much bigger staff now, but I think that just equates to a similar length in development to their previous things.
      Of course I could be wrong with this, so like, correct me here if I'm wrong but that's just my assumption. I am going to assume the size is between 35% and 50%, which would be also amazing imo.
      Either way, super stoked to get any new ER content tbh. They could literally just sell me another Ashes of Ariandel and I would probably buy that shit without a second thought.

    First of all, I highly doubt the content-to-dev time ratio is linear. I suspect that the longer the dev time, the lower the ratio of content is. We've seen games get released after 10 to 20 years of development that have about the same amount of content as any other game with a more typical dev time. Second, you also have to consider quantity vs. quality. Longer dev time could mean more content, _or_ it could mean them polishing what they've already developed. Time spent polishing won't increase the total runtime, but it should (hopefully) increase the quality of the experience for that runtime.
    Something that I think is very important to note is that they'll likely take the opportunity to fix some things in the DLC that were issues in the base game. Kind of like how everyone craps all over DS2 while simultaneously raving about how great the DS2 DLCs were. This means the DLC won't simply be "more Elden Ring" but also "better Elden Ring", and that will also take additional dev time. I expect we'll see tighter, less open field spaces and less recycled content, and probably some big multiplayer changes.

    I know we're just having fun but extrapolating from 2 points while dismissing 2 other points makes it clear these aren't useful estimates.

      Like yeah it is fun, but there are fair reasons to ignore DS1/2. They came out over and near a decade ago and had more inconsistent development cycles. DS3/BB are much more reflective of current FS, even if not a perfect representation.

      Totally depends on how you look at it. It's a long time and companies and technology changes, but in a scenario where we don't have much data anyway, it's safer to increase the significance of the data.
      The premise is "the company previously did X so we'll assume they'll do X' as well", so if that were true, we'd need to take in as many datapoints as possible. If the premise is "the last 2 games they made were representative of the DLC Length ratio', then fair.
      Again, I know it's a ludicrous thing to try and estimate given that it's a handful of datapoints, the scope of the games are unrelated, and we have no idea about anything else, so we're just having fun talking about it. @@MadLuigi

    The only way for the game to be over 30hrs long IF it's a new area(s). Because people would just fast travel with the old map.
