- After Elden Ring won GOTY in 2022 over God of War Ragnarok, I was left wondering why. So, in an effort to understand general audiences (Or the people that choose the winners in the first place), I am starting my journey to figure out if this game is really that good or even better than God of War Ragnarok.

Eldin Ring actually felt like a game, GoWR felt like a movie
Truuuu
That’s true but if I wanted a movie I’d watch a movie yk. I loved gowr but Elden ring was just an experience I’ll never forget personally. And the dlc looks even more beautiful.
this is exactly why GoWR dick riders thought it would win - because there's no real challenge in it and they all felt special.
Both were amazing.
But GOW is an elder goat
i've played both elden ring and GoWR (i also played GoW 2018 and prefered it over GoWR) and think they are incredible games in their own respective ways but elden ring was definitely more revolutionary and innovative than GoWR. Elden ring is the type of game people are gonna talk about in ten years with their kids whereas GoWR is a solid game that was forgotten about in less than a year. Seriously, i think the DLC for elden ring has garnered more hype than GoWR.
Tl;dr GoWR was a great game, Elden ring was a unforgettable moment in gaming history.
also the lore dump at the start of the game is the sort of thing where you have no idea what the fuck is going until after you finish the game and replay it, something i liked figuring out on my own. Not to mention, Elden ring has very few cutscenes, and you learn most of the basic lore through those cutscenes (btw your guesses as to what was going on were mostly correct). if you dislike that than its fine but i think its WAY better than black ops 4 lore dumps.
Elden Ring is a game that truly captivated me in the way GAMES can only do. God of War could have been a movie and I would have been fine with that. It's certainly cool, and it's definitely a great game, but I just feel like if you're picking which one was truly the better GAMING experience, it has to be Elden Ring. The depth of character builds, the variety of gameplay. The beautiful and enchanting open world that you get to take your time exploring, laced with deadly threats that keep you on your toes and immersed in that exploration.
The only thing I'd give GoW an edge in is story, and I ADORE story in video games. I think that story is VERY important. That doesn't mean that it's everything. The feeling I get when beating a new boss, or when I discover some powerful new weapon to base an entire build around is just so... DAMN... FULFILLING. I remember fighting Radahn for three straight hours pre-nerf, Non stop tries because I'm just not the best gamer and that feeling of ecstasy and relief when I beat him is something most games just can't do.
I respect that you might end up not liking it. It's not always going to be for everyone. But I won't think of GoW as objectively better in any life time xD.
Sorry man but Ragnarok is like any other triple A games, with kinda the same gameplay, graphics, story telling... And everything is given to the player without any effort...
Yeah
Love this Video, not because of anything spectacular in it, its more less just a part 1 to an elden ring playthrough... theres thousands on this site. but because you had the balls to create a video about a game that you didn't like. A lot of people would have never played the game, or came in with a Negative Mindset... ive seen it with my own friends and even myself to a degree. I stand on no side of this war as i loved both God of War and Elden Ring and didnt really care which won or lost. I have around 600 hours in Elden Ring and 200 in GoWR. and thats mostly just because of replayability, which wasnt as apparent in GoWR. Thats the only thing i point out that is a direct positive over the 2 games, Fromsoftware as a whole have some of the most replayable games ive ever seen, or if not them, its a game based on that formula, like Nioh, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Remnant: From the ashes, and Lies of P... Just to name a few. All of these games I adore, and Nioh 2, the sequel to Nioh 1... Might be my favorite game i've ever played. (NOT FOR THE LIGHT OF HEART, if you think Darksouls is hard and unforgiving... try playing Bloodborne with only 3 heals... thats about the difficulty of Nioh.)
elden ring made several players realize how outdated other melee combat 3rd person games had become, every fight feels like a fight and not just mashing combos after combos.
It also made boss battles in some other games feel significantly less cool lol
You don’t understand. That chest is literally so important because it takes you to a place where you can run past enemies and basically a whole bunch of important shit you need to get OP early on. Honestly, if you just looked up a few things, you’d understand how you could kit yourself first out early game and then go tackle the first bosses.
I’d say the game is really immense and fantastic. It totally deserves it because of the scale and the detail in the game and all the things you can do. I hated it before I understood it. Now I’m willing to carry on playing through it. Hint, go look up a UA-cam guide on an OP early mage build and you’ll see a step by step guide to get yourself kitted out(look for the one that shows you the map as they’re going places) because you honestly don’t have to struggle so much dude. You’re here to have fun not to run around lost
the chest is not important at all and if you pay attention to challenge runs and/or speed runs - no one of any skill really uses it because there's just as if not more important shit you can pick up on the way avoiding it. you do enter the cave either way, this way actually saves time since youll be picking up the same shit anyway, and it makes the cave much easier unless you're just using it immediately leave said cave for some weird reason.
the optimal start is just running to physick after getting torrent, then taking the portal above it which you can then run to where that chest takes you while collecting a lot more
You didnt even finish bloodborne thats arguably the best souls game
For real instant loss of respect
Elden ring didnt just beat ragnarok, it absolutely crushed it lol. Became the most awarded game in history while competing with ragnarok 😂
p sure its last of us pt 2
@@itzjapfromjend nope, elden ring passed it by a lot
@@itzjapfromjend elden is now the most awarded game of all time currently by a long shot
@@T.L.P50 thouught it was bro
He Killed a turtle!!! GET HIM!!!
Dog*
Not like most of us killed the turtles
Gowr was ass compared to this absolute goat but good video keep it up
Test, let's see if YT unbanned me :P:
Uhmmm, your video seems tongue-in-cheek-ish, so no need to retort in anger, me thinks :P.
Looking forward to part 2 et al.
Here, have a sub whether you're planning to trash the game or (inevitably) praise it.
Cheers!
I love elden ring, 1000hrs and 100% it, but the game is way too unintuitive. It gives the player barely any quest trackers. There's 5 optional endings and you will probably miss all of them if you don't look things up. Still one of my favourite games but even I can admit a 1st playthrough of this game can be rough. ER>GoWR any day though
Glad to see I'm not the only one who fell for that chest.
Elden Ring converted me to the glory (and pain) of the Souls franchise, and I've since finished it with 5 different characters and am on my 2nd or third playthrough with all but one of them, who I'm saving for the DLC (yup, I'm hooked). I'm really looking forward to seeing how your journey unfolds!
I don't think I can go that far with my experience. I loved E.R., but tried going back to each one of the older souls games and pretty much hated the experiences I had with those. Elden Ring just hit all the perfect spots for what I love in games like this. I was pretty bummed honestly. I thought "oh I get i it now!!" ....Nope....games were unbearably annoying to play for me lol
L take
I think the intro to elden ring is the weakest of the from soft intros
I was an elden ring hater as well. Not for really any good reason besides having a rough go at DS1 and tried ER a couple of times but never made it past Limgrave. But im currently 50ish hours into my current game and really enjoying it. Give it an honest shot, at least beat Margit, and see how you feel. Once i finally took down Margit I realized why people love the game/genre so much
In my opinion gowr wasn't even in the running for goty, but not for any gameplay reasons! It's because it came out like two weeks (or something like that) before the awards were given. Recency bias aside, the game wouldn't have been out long enough to actually be properly judged. It could be the best game of the century but if it's released the day before awards are given out then it shouldn't even be in the running for 'game of the year'.
Fun video, but hey I liked the opening! I remember being kind of dissapointed it wasn't CG like the story trailer for some reason, but the voiceover is pretty memorable. ARISE, YE DEAD WHO YET LIVE
Nobody talks about this woke mess that was GOWR anymore dude... You really have a bad taste in video games, that's all, don't blame ER.... Elden Ring is for adult, of course pre-teens will like to be taken by the hand by GOWR.
I played Elden ring around the time when it first came out and have over 200 days worth of time in the game. I absolutely love the game. Of course I wanted it to win but even if gow won I wouldn’t have been mad. It seemed like an amazing game as well. Never played it but I might one day.
This is the process in souls-like games.
Play-die-rage- continue-die-rage-beat the game-you love the game- repeat the cycle
Clickbait troll
Well, sorry to pop your bubble, but Elden Ring won, it´s as simple as that. 😌
Like your commentary and editing, well done sir. looking forward to Part 2
GoW 2018 deserved its GOTY. GoWR seemed just like a reskin w/ new storyline. Elden Ring took souls games to a whole new level, while still keeping the feeling of it being a souls game
GoWR didn’t deserve to win, even if the best game of the entire decade didn’t release the same year.
This popped up on my frontpage, UA-cam has chosen you! Congratulations on making good content so early in your career :) Keep up the good work!
love a rage bait kid just trying to boost his 72 subscriptions to 73
Him comparing gowr and Elden ring is like comparing a cat to a whale. They are two different genres of games ofcourse there's going to be many differances
I liked ragnorak but it seemed just like a dlc more than a new game
GOWR was a very mediocre game
Elden ring is a masterpiece and god of war ragnarok is mediocre
The well thought out world alone makes it better.
the beauty of elden ring is it can be as difficult or as easy as the player prefers
I think Yahtzee got it right on God of War 4.
Welcome to the maidenless club, please enjoy your stay in the beautiful and terrifying Lands Between :)
PS: Please ignore the hateful comments. There are always people who don't get a joke when it slaps them across the face.
3:48 Bro u stopped playing bloodborne because of a skill issue 😂 now i see why u hate these games ur just bad at it
oh god, here we go with the elitist "git gud" bs lol
@@gmee123 dude that's literally it my first run I was garbage but I kept going cause it was fun AF the entire way through
Elden ring is simply peak
Don't give up sir!
Lmfao how was that a lore dump it was like 1 minute, you got it right pretty much tho on the intro story and that wasn’t a cutscene just the opening. Great video tho tbh it’s nice to see it from the perspective of someone who wanted gowr to win.
Edit: this game gets crazier as you go on so just wait you’ll be shivering in your boots, I hope you make it fair enough to play the dlc though because it comes out in one month
lol
1:45 I just love how u try to make Elden ring look bad by showing the 1.5x speed and 2x speed but fail to realize no one complained about it because it had sick visuals to go with it and u dare to compare it to black ops zombies when theirs so much detail in elden rings art. You are coping bad kiddo
The sped up part is a joke. I'm a huge Elden Ring fan myself and I legit chuckled at that. Don't take it so seriously :)
Yeah that was probably a joke dude don’t take it too hard. Also we getting peak again in a month with the dlc so let’s try to be a bit more positive
this game beats gowr 10 times out of 10
