[HOW TO] Replace the battery on a 2015-2022 Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon (Gas & Diesel)

- This video shows how to replace the battery on 2015-2022 Chevy Colorado's and GMC Canyon's. The process should be the roughly the same for the gas and diesel models. Note that diesel models use an H8 AGM (group size 49) style battery, whereas gas models use a H6 (group size 48) lead acid battery. You can put an AGM battery in your gas truck if you want.

Battery replacement is part of preventative maintenance. Most batteries will last between 3-5 years. Don't wait until yours dies and leaves you stranded!
This was the most straightforward, uncomplicated video I've ever seen. Gave the bolt size and talked through every step. Thanks for the help!
Cheers. Thanks!
You used easy to understand steps and made this whole process much less intimidating for me; thank you.
Cheers glad to help.
Exactly what I needed start to finish. Never touched a battery in my life and was able to do this easily in about 20 mins. Thanks so much! 👊🏻
Glad to help! Thanks for watching.
Love adding the socket sizes on the screen! The battery being locked in place in the trey is what led me here. Excellent video overall!
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
I know next to nothing about cars but was able to change my fiancée’s battery fairly easily. Thanks for this, truly. Was a life and a wallet saver.
Very welcome! Thanks for watching.
Excellent job at explaining this procedure. I watched about 5 different videos before choosing this one to follow. Im glad that I did. My biggest obstacle was finding a 13mm deep socket. Of course I had a 12 and a 14 but luckily my neighbor had the 13. I have subscribed to your channel so that I can reference you again in the future if necessary! Thanks!👍
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! Simple, easy instructions that REALLY helped me change my battery in my 2017 Chevy Colorado!
Glad to help! Thanks for watching
You nailed it, never know what you’re going to run into with new clips and bolts and whatnot, perfect detailed video, much appreciated!
Yep! Can be tricky sometimes. Thanks for watching!
One of the best videos I’ve seen. Especially since he tells you the size of each socket so that you don’t have to guess.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you soooo much for your video. I am changing out my battery (after getting stranded in town yesterday) and want to do the work myself, without asking my husband to help. I had to keep running back and forth into the house to watch what you were doing, then run back out to the garage to do it. I'm getting it done, but not in 20 minutes. What takes you 20 minutes takes me two hours. BUT I get it done so that's a good thing. Thank you again. You really did a fantastic job on this video.
I just replaced the original in my 2017 Colorado. Replaced and cleaned up in under 30 minutes. This is a very helpful video. Thanks.
@@robertk8541 glad it helped! Thanks for watching.
The original battery on my 2017 Z71 just went out, I'll be changing mine today.
@rickhutch2 that’s pretty good for original battery!
This is a well done video. 😊 No gabbing or useless comments. Thank you.
@@patrickmccoy8169 thank you for watching!
Perfect illustration and step by step instructions. I appreciate that and you, for a great video. Thanks.
Cheers thanks
Replaced my 2020 Colorado battery today thanks for the very easy to understand video it kept me from farting around going back anf forth to the tool box
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Great video. Just replaced original battery in my 2018 Colorado easily thanks to your help.
Great! Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Appreciate the video brother!
Had a freeze in louisiana and killed my colorado battery
Got it done in 20mins thanks to this video
Glad to hear!
Thank you so much. One of my square nuts on the negative terminal was stripped which added a layer of difficulty. Thanks to your directions, everything else was done in 5min. That stupid bolt...
Excellent video. I never could have replaced my battery without it. All my earlier vehicles just had two terminals and a battery. When I opened the hood (first time since I bought the truck) and saw all the stuff attached to the top of the battery, I was baffled. The video solved the mysteries. Thanks for the help.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching.
Thank you. That plastic insert would have thrown me off if not for your video. Much appreciated.
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Great instructions! I had this done in about 20 minutes with no hitches. Thanks!
Awesome!!
Perfect instructions! I got this done quickly. Replaced with another ACDelco diesel battery.
Thank you so much for your very helpfull video. Like all the others have commented I could not have changed my battery if it weren't for this video. !!
Glad to help! Thanks for watching
Thank you, just changed mine. 2016 Colorado with the original battery. Was still good but didn't want to push my luck.
Safe to say your OG battery was past its useful life. Glad it helped.
Lol mines a 15 with it’s og battery 😬 changing it today to be safe
Thanks for the video. Just replaced my battery! Saved me a ton of time.
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Good video! I just did mine in real time while watching. Thanks
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching
Thanks, I’m pretty mechanical and have changed a lot of batteries in my life but this one had me stumped. I didn’t realize you had to remove the entire hold down bolt 🤦🏻♂️
@@AlwaysForwardBBQ yea it’s a little bit tricky. Glad to help.
You’re a life saver brother thank you so much
Glad to help! Thanks for watching.
Excellent video as always. The battery in my 2016 decided to just go ahead and die yesterday as I was leaving work. I got it replaced this morning within 30 minutes.
Glad to hear! Thanks for watching.
Awesome video! Changed my battery in about 15 minutes, thank you.
Glad to help!
Thanks for the video , didn't even have to bust out the hammer ... On to the air filter
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video! You made it easy to change the battery in my 2021 Canyon!

Great video followed step by step
I would still be wrestling with this, if it not for your video, thanks.
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Always Great Content. Also great that you included the trick to remove the Battery Cover without causing damage
Thank you!
Just wanted to say thanks for the video. Well shot and easy to follow. Hope you will continue to make more like this in the future. Thanks for help!

Excellent video, very well explained, thank you!

Great content. Just what I was looking for as I am very shortly going to need to replace my battery in my 2020 Canyon. Thanks!!!!
Glad to help. Thanks for watching!
thanks bro. i would have broken that plastic cover without your review
Glad I could help
Thank you! Saved me a tow to the auto shop. My only added expense was purchasing Metric socket set. Silly me thought being a American truck my standard sockets would do😃
Glad to help!
You make the best videos to follow and I appreciate it very much!
Thanks very much. I appreciate that.
Great, easy to follow instructions...helped me out in a bind. Thank you for sharing the knowledge! 👍
Glad to help! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this video. You did a great job explaining everything.
Thanks for watching. Glad it was helpful.
Thanks for the vid! It will save me time and frustration when it comes time to replace battery on my 2018 Colorado 4 cyl. I did purchase a Steelman 3' Memory saver odbII p/n 60019 . Here in California, if you replace your battery right before a smog test it will fail. The ECU has to " Re- learn" and this can take 200-400 miles . The older the vehicle, the more miles required to re-learn settings. My friend's 1997 Dodge Dakota took 400 miles after he replaced the battery .
Interesting. Didn’t know that. Good luck! Thanks for watching.
Getting down to -5° this weekend & my battery is 6 years old , so thanx
Glad to help. Hope you get yours changed without any issues.
Thank you just changed mine
This was so helpful. Very clearly explained.
Thanks. Glad it helped!
Very nice! You did a great job of walking through this!!!
Thanks! Appreciate the view.
2016 colorado with late 2015 build date, factory baterry just died on 9/11/2023. Good run for the AC Delco.
That’s impressive for sure!
My 2017 just died
Thanks made it easy.
Glad to help thanks for watching.
Thank you I was stuck on that clip to remove all the other wires over the battery
Yea it’s tricky. Glad to help!
BIG thank you and can't believe the ridiculous process of removing this battery. I would have destroyed everything not knowing about the dam hold down tabs at the bottom!
Glad to help! Thanks for watching.
Great video. Super helpful! Surprisingly, my only remaining problem was the negative terminal not coming off. It wasn't corroded on and would move side to side, but absolutely would not come vertical. I'm still not really sure what the issue was.
Sounds like it was super corroded. Spray it with some PB blaster to loosen it up.
Boom! Done! Thanks for the tutorial.
That was nice and super well explained. I'm ready for when i need to do that!! Thank You!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video. Appreciate the kind words!
Thank you easy job but clips could make this a hard job if I did not know what I know now. Again Thank You 👍
Glad to help. Thanks for watching
Changed many batteries with no problems...
but on my 2020 Colorado I needed a little assistance...
Perfect info 👍
Thanks for the tutorial
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Sir…..super appreciate it!
Thank you.
Great video, thanks!
Cheers thanks!
Thank you :)
Thank you so much!
Geeze that is one seriously secure battery
Yea well it weighs about 40lbs. You don’t want that moving around in the engine bay!
Thanks so much! Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Very good !
Good job explaining straight to the video not a lot of jibber 😅jabber
Thanks very much.
What a GREAT video. Thanks alot! I am a subscriber for sure.
Awesome. Thanks a lot!
I just had to do this job for my 2017 GMC canyon and it was surreal compared to replacing my wife's 2018 toyota corollas battery
Yea it was super easy! I had flashbacks tho of replacing a battery in my 2002 Silverado in the frigid cold. You have to remove a crossmember in the engine bay to get the battery out on that one.
Thanks you
Thank you for a straightforward video and explanation. I really appreciate not having to hear some crazy backstory involving a Walmart parking lot and some tweakers. Have you ever replaced the battery and then not have it restart?
I have a 2017 Chevy Colorado V6 (Gas). I replaced a dead battery in the same manner and process as you described. I have cleaned the terminal s and connections with wire brushes. When I reconnected the primary negative terminal, the alarm was triggered, and I was able to disable it with the key fob. I then attempted to start the vehicle. All the gauges and electronics inside the vehicle work. When I turn the key there is an audible click and nothing else. The battery display shows a range of voltages (11.8 - 12.8). I had the new battery tested at the location of purchase. Subsequent attempts at reconnection with waiting times from 15 minutes to 6 hours have failed to get the vehicle to turn over.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks!
Glad to help. Sorry to hear about your issue. I've not heard of that issue before. Check the main fuse on the top of the battery distribution block. Maybe you accidentally shorted it out.
@@fondupot Do you happen to know how I should set up my volt meter to be able to test this?
@hickoryflatslandscapedesig3929 no. But Jair check for continuity. If the fuse is bad it will not show continuity.
Great help !’…thank u !!👍🏽💯
You: It's not as tough as I thought it was. Me: Three hours later and it still won't go in.
Got the right battery?
Thanks!
Thank you!
Great video! Easily understandable on changing the battery on the Colorado. Just had one question you didn't bring up. Do you have to keep power on the computer memory before changing the battery? Thank you.
Thanks for watching. I didn’t keep power on the memory. Truck remembered everything.
Mine was replaced 2 years ago on my 2017 had a temperature issue took it to friend of mine that owns his own shop and turns out the battery was bad. Had no idea it was bad no signs. He has to do a battery reset, back then I didn't have my OBD2 reader so next battery change I'll be good to go.
Interesting. I didn’t have to any sort of battery reset. Just swapped in the new battery and I was good to go.
Did this on my '18 Duramax last year. I didn't bother looking anything up because "it's a battery, how hard can it be" and wasted entirely too much time before finding out about those clips along the bottom.
The H8 is tricky to get up and in place without smashing or pinching anything.
Yea i could imagine those clips being super annoying if you don’t know exactly where to pry. The H8 is a big battery. Definitely heavier so i can it being harder to get in place.
Thanks for the help.
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Very helpful
Thanks
Thanks for watching.
Thanks man
Perfecto! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
I was told on the GMC Canyons, if you replace battery without keeping 12 volts to vehicle, things like resetting the SAS sensor is required which requires shop software and equipment. Is this true?
Not to my knowledge. I didn’t do anything like that and it’s been fine.
Is it really required to plug the vent hole on front end of the battery?
If I wanted to add some aftermarket lights, could I use the positive wire of them connected to one of the positive wires under the box on top??? Also can I hook the negative to the negative on battery or find a good spot to ground it too???
As long as you have a good relay harness yes you can use the positive on the battery. You could use an existing ground or a good bolt for you negative.
@@fondupot thank you, I appreciate it
You’re welcome
Thank you for this.
Chevy: this is the dumbest thing you’ve ever made
@@darknightofthesoulyt thanks for watching.
2020 Colorado. Fan wouldn't cut off.. just unooked the battery and everything is fine now.
Hmm strange. Glad you got it worked out.
What is under the black box to the left of the battery?
It's a fuse panel.
Does anybody know what the black cable that he removed either the 13mm lead to or what it is called?
My negative side had a good amount corrosion, i have loosen my nuts but i doesnt come off. Would it be possible the corrosion would make it get stuck?
It's possible yes, maybe try spraying a little penetrating oil (don't go hog wild) on the bolt and see if that loosens things up. It shouldn't be impossible.
Is it necessary to use the small plastic vent plug that came with the AGM battery or doesn’t it matter?
I’ll not sure. I didn’t use an AGM battery on my truck.
1.5 years later,... how's that Duralast doing now?
Perfect. Cranks up every time. Even sits for extended periods without issue.
Did you connect a power supply to keep the computer alive?
No. It's not needed.
What is or what does the black cable do that connects to the black terminal under the other 10 mm the cable that comes out the wall and on it
I’m not sure which wire you’re referring to. But if it’s connected somehow to the positive terminal, then it’s probably a power distribution wire.
I'm approaching 4 years and also thinking about doing this.
What is the cost of a battery now a days?
Cost me $229. But when I return the old one I’ll get a $22 credit.
