Scotty I have a 2021 bmw x7 with 1,156 miles the cars radio isn’t working I took it to a bmw dealership and they wanted 8,900 dollars to fix it. Am I being ripped off? Let me know

@@master88yt67 Why is not under warranty??? Oh, Wait, It's a 2021 - only the dealer can service it - You don't need Scotty to tell you YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF! Find an independent mechanic or go to a "car radio shop". Even if you have to drive 100 miles it would still be cheaper! Find another dealer?
You can also take a battery tester to a junkyard and get a good one there for $35 they usually have a shelf of them inside by the checkout hello scotty
The batteries the Walmart and autozone sells come from the same factory. The only thing different is the label. They are both made by Johnson Controls. I know because I am a truck driver and I have picked up and delivered these.
Thank u for that insight 👍🏾
Also Walmart beats the heck out of Autozone's prices. Advance Auto too.
MVP truck driver, I'm a service technician at walmart and was curious how the battery was compared to autozone
That could be location dependant.
There are only a few battery companies in the USA. Walmart might buy from more than one, depending on price and location.
Always check the manufacturer date.
Yes they come from the same factory. But they make different quality for each retailer. The top line Walmart battery is equivalent to autozones mid level.
Seems like the cost of a battery at Auto Zone goes up 25 bucks every time I need one...
I've worked at AZ for 3 years now as a 2nd job. The most any battery has gone up in that 3 years is $10 & that was during this year. There was a $5 increase in the spring & another $5 increase in the fall.
@@Zib187 I need a battery roughly every 3 years... In 2015 I paid $125 and in 2018 I paid $150 at Auto Zone and I always get my batteries there....

Hi Scotty, I once wasted 5 years of my life working in a battery manufacturing plant. I learned a lot about automotive batteries as well as getting lead poisoning. Now this manufacturer is very well known company but the real secret was that we built batteries for everybody. We built batteries for discount auto parts stores as well as batteries for the likes of Ford and John Deere. Sometimes our production line would change who we were building for mid shift. The reason this was possible was simple. The only difference between the 70 buck discount battery and the 160 buck JD or Ford battery was the color of the plastic case and the placard we slapped on the top. Internally they were all the same battery. The only different battery we made that was different was military grade batteries. They were three times the size and weight of car batteries, were constructed with a much heavier shell and still had tar filled tops so bad cells could be easily replaced. Recently some scam artists are claiming they can teach you "the secret" of repairing car batteries. Now there is a way to get a bit more life out of some small rechargeable batteries if you don't mind one or two of them exploding in your face. But I know for a fact today's car batteries are specifically built so nobody can repair them. If a battery came off the assembly line defective we would cut the top off with a band saw (because once the top is epoxied on it will never come off) the lead was then recycled and the rest of the battery (plastic shell and paper separators were tossed into the trash bin. If the manufacturer can't repair them nobody else is going to be able to do so either. The lab boys spent all day making sure of that.
Jj
My buddy worked at a battery place. He told me you are tested once a month for lead poisoning. If your levels are too high then you need to work with a protective suit until they go down. Sounds nuts to me they don't wear that stuff all the time but I would imagine getting very hot in summer.
Wow. Very informative and interesting
When my father was a child medly 40's last century told me the batteries don't die and light bulbs ether. But I can think No bussines there..!!!
200 start amps. 5 courses x 20 minutes each, hour rest in between. Makes the acid like new in any 12V battery.
He’s accurate about the old Delco battery. I used to work for Delco and we built batteries in Muncie, IN , New Jersey and Anaheim, CA. When Delco closed those plants and the batteries were sourced to Korea, battery warranty claims went crazy. Most of it had to do with the shelf life.
They were also made in Olathe Kansas.
I think I commented this before, but the guy at autozone tried getting me to buy the most expensive battery by saying “this battery will make your car feel like a Tesla”......I’m dead serious
Ha, that’s not how cars work!

Anyone else notice...Cars today don't give warnings when the battery is getting old and worn out. You just go out one day and suddenly it won't start. Also, they have scanners that can check the battery health that plug into your OBD port (on board computer). WHICH MEANS.....your car's computer already has the proper testing and feedback components and car makers could easily give you a warning before you're left stuck. But they dont!
A cheap multimeter can solve all your problems.
Because they are too cheap to implement the hardware/software

Thank you again Scotty for putting a smile on my face every time I watch your vids.
Ironically, I was told just the other day that I should replace my battery ASAP. I assumed that they were trying to scam more money out of my already $$$ service visit as I have NOT had any warning issues with my battery in any way shape or form. I've been buying batteries from the junk yard for $20, look at the manufacturing date and check the voltage.
Need to check amperage also; had a battery with all the voltage, but some 150 amps less than rated while still in warranty on a professional battery tester. New battery solved my issues.
I don't recommend people to buy junk yard batteries, just like windows - half the time it costs more then to just buy a new one. But if you have a tester and you know what your doing then you know it'll be okay.
Yep I hear you- A buddy talks to guys that run a wreckingyard-they would say which vehicles got hauled in because of accident...,good thing about that was he knew they were driving so pull running engines and transmissions ... great way to run a backyard business..
Damn, where are you getting junkyard batteries for $20. Cheapest my junkyard has them for is $40
Advance, AutoZone, O’Reilly’s, Walmart, and Costco all source their batteries from Johnson Controls. The batteries offered by these five companies have little to no differentiation between one another aside from their label. The three aforementioned parts stores fix their prices to one another which plays a big role in the sudden price jump of lead acid batteries. (For the record, the “new” Diehard batteries offered at Advance are nothing more than relabeled AutoCraft batteries). Brand names in the car battery world are as meaningless as it gets, be mindful when you purchase your next car battery
So which one is better to buy?
Speaking of ADVANCE AUTO batteries, I've had really good luck with a Size 65 AGM battery I bought there. It's 4 years old and it still acts like a brand-new battery. The Optima AGM that preceded it died after only three years.
From several regretful occasions, I finally learned the hard way that those "Ever Start" slow-cranking then dead rubber stones at Walmart are THE WORST from ANYwhere. Fortunately, I got them back to returns before their Warranties expired so they didn't cost me cash. Just a bunch of jump starts & a few long walks from which I learned more than one lesson......
Great information Scotty (as always) but I'm skunked cause my local Walmart doesn't have my battery in stock.
I worked at Exide battery in Reading PA . They make the batteries for Autozone , Advanced Auto , Napa and Walmart.
I just recently brought a Exide battery at Home Depot recommended by my friend. Works great 3 year warranty cost $109 while duralast was $169. Can’t believe the big price difference.
I've have had one of that brand that has done me well for four years now. Hope I didn't just jinx it. LOL
Unless this has changed since March 2020 Clarios makes there batteries not Exide. Former Advance employee. Rural King sells Exide and they are absolute junk. Advance named Clarios their 2019 vendor of the year.
A few yrs ago, a battery I got at Walmart had a sticker on it that said Mexico.
Speaking of motorcycle batteries... The longest lifetime battery I ever had was 15 years... It was a 2000 Suzuki Bandit and I replaced the battery in 2015. I bought the bike used in 2003. The battery was OEM. First thing I did to the bike once in my garage was install an electrically heated clothing tap. Of course, the tap then doubles as a harness for hooking up a smart trickle charger. The thing was plugged in and maintenance charging the moment it entered the garage from a trip. The bike now has over 100k and it's been all over North America.
My pickup truck sits idle most of the time. It has a knife switch on the battery negative terminal. It's also hooked up to a smart trickle charger while it sits.
I get quite a bit of life out of my batteries. ;-)
Thank you Scotty, I got battery replacement made in the same month !

Blame the lead shortage on the ammo shortage
I thought that was because of the brass?
blame the lead shortage on the fact that manufacturing, many recycling plants, and overseas shipments were shut down for quite some time...
The shortage isn't due to lead. It's due to primers.
The bullet be hitting the bone
It's likely the EPA who makes batteries expensive and experience shortages. They have a ton of green recycle rules which require expensive licenses and then "Lead" is like poison to those EPA nerds. They usually are in the way vs. doing any good however, the good they do is reasonable but there is a limit to what they should get involved in, they just haven't figured that out yet.
When my battery failed in Amarillo, Texas, got a jump from roadside assistance and went to AutoZone. They didn't have the battery I needed except the premium $200 model, and the associate was clueless besides, I could afford it, but why? Still the "new" battery got us home, but it died prematurely the next year likely because it was on the shelf in Williams for 3 or 4 years. So good advice, Scotty. Check the date! Thanks!
Yep...back in those days they called them "Dry Charged" battery and they'd come with a bag of acid or the store would fill it with acid from their bulk storage container etc. BTW, those Walmart batteries are very good ones if you buy their better grade vs. lower grade. Lots of folks experience 6 years with them before replacement.

Scotty, enjoy your channel. However, I disagree with the usage of simulated load testers like the Midtronics you have.
A while ago I worked in a Japanese import dealership; customer had a no start situation intermittent but it had been checked by two other dealers, everything was okay and nothing found.
Long story short, I replaced the battery after doing the usual tests and eliminated the starter, cables, ground circuit etc. Tested bat with factory approved Midtronics tool, passed and printed results as required by factory.
