Hi Scotty, I once wasted 5 years of my life working in a battery manufacturing plant. I learned a lot about automotive batteries as well as getting lead poisoning. Now this manufacturer is very well known company but the real secret was that we built batteries for everybody. We built batteries for discount auto parts stores as well as batteries for the likes of Ford and John Deere. Sometimes our production line would change who we were building for mid shift. The reason this was possible was simple. The only difference between the 70 buck discount battery and the 160 buck JD or Ford battery was the color of the plastic case and the placard we slapped on the top. Internally they were all the same battery. The only different battery we made that was different was military grade batteries. They were three times the size and weight of car batteries, were constructed with a much heavier shell and still had tar filled tops so bad cells could be easily replaced. Recently some scam artists are claiming they can teach you "the secret" of repairing car batteries. Now there is a way to get a bit more life out of some small rechargeable batteries if you don't mind one or two of them exploding in your face. But I know for a fact today's car batteries are specifically built so nobody can repair them. If a battery came off the assembly line defective we would cut the top off with a band saw (because once the top is epoxied on it will never come off) the lead was then recycled and the rest of the battery (plastic shell and paper separators were tossed into the trash bin. If the manufacturer can't repair them nobody else is going to be able to do so either. The lab boys spent all day making sure of that.

There are 2 battery manufactures in the USA... Johnson Control and East Penn. You can tell the difference by looking at them, raised cap covers, that is Johnson Control. Flat tops are East Penn. Note, that is probably 90% of the batteries. So, if you buy a Walmart, Oreilly, Autozone, Advance, Napa, Excide, Interstate or any car battery, you will see the same battery with different labels. However, we now are seeing import batteries come in from China, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Korea, Japan. Even though there are 2 US makers, you can tell the difference in the grades by the weight of the battery. Before you say no way... look at them. Pick up a 65 series battery with a 1 year warranty, and 3 year warranty... which is heavier? Which has more crank amps? With today's electrical demands, buy the battery that has the right amps and size for your vehicle. Trying to get by cheap, will cost you in the long run.

Also, they have scanners that can check the battery health that plug into your OBD port (on board computer). WHICH MEANS.....your car's computer already has the proper testing and feedback components and car makers could easily give you a warning before you're left stuck. But they dont!

Advance, AutoZone, O’Reilly’s, Walmart, and Costco all source their batteries from Johnson Controls. The batteries offered by these five companies have little to no differentiation between one another aside from their label. The three aforementioned parts stores fix their prices to one another which plays a big role in the sudden price jump of lead acid batteries. Speaking of motorcycle batteries... The longest lifetime battery I ever had was 15 years... It was a 2000 Suzuki Bandit and I replaced the battery in 2015. I bought the bike used in 2003. The battery was OEM. First thing I did to the bike once in my garage was install an electrically heated clothing tap. Of course, the tap then doubles as a harness for hooking up a smart trickle charger. The thing was plugged in and maintenance charging the moment it entered the garage from a trip. The bike now has over 100k and it's been all over North America.
My pickup truck sits idle most of the time. It has a knife switch on the battery negative terminal. It's also hooked up to a smart trickle charger while it sits.

I bought an Oreillys battery 5 years ago in the spring. By winter, it dies off and wont start my yukon. Granted i have a minor parasitic draw i cant find that eats up the battery, but ive returned the battery and every year. Oreillys tests it and always say it's detective, and they give me a new one.

If you buy a battery which is "dry charged" i.e. they just poured the acid into it and called it good to go, by all means after you get it home (either installed in the vehicle or just riding in the trunk), take the time to fully charge it on a decent charger (Like a CTEK 8 program MS5) and charge it for however long it takes to get it to 100% (up to 48 hours). The battery will reward you with a great long life....

  • @joeflo8418
    @joeflo8418 3 роки тому +2

A battery getting old and losing it's charge can cost you:
Your alternator will need to work harder and wear out the brushes sooner.
When your starter is dragging it draws amperes, gets hot and it will fail prematurely.
Your heater fan motor, wiper motor, power windows and locks are dragging and slowly burning them up.
As soon as my battery tests borderline I buy a new battery.
I put an Interstate Brand little car battery in my old Bolens riding mower and it lasted 15 years.
The MTP types are the best batteries made by Interstate.

I go through herds of batteries at work, there are only 2 US companies that build batteries. I bought one at my local parts store that went bad when it was only 6 months old. AZ customer service blows goats! I had all the paperwork but since the store had changed ownership they wouldn’t make good on it. (Same battery brand, same AZ franchise) I felt sorry for the counter-man, I’m sure the “Richard head” manager made him clean up the mess where the battery fell off the counter when he apparently didn’t put in a safe position after I told him what he could do with his company policy concerning batteries sold during the franchise shuffle..... it’s been over 20 years and I haven’t even bought a fuse from those fine folks at A-Z !

@@Zephyrmec I'm really confused? They sold you a battery that fell off the counter? I wouldn't buy the battery and walk out if they tried telling me to keep it.
FYI - Talking to a big company in store about changing there policy is a waste of breath and should be taken up with corporate and not a store employee / manager. Those people could care less and just follow company policies. They have no say and can only make suggestions when higher ups come. I always contact corporate and have gotten alot of free stuff from it.
Ex - My cats food changed recipe and the company didn't even know. When I sent them an email showing the back of the can ( the calories, nutrition %, and ingredients changed), they sent me a full refund plus a $50 dollar vouchers which was good for every brand they owned. It allowed me to try out a bunch of different food plus I was able to keep the original food since my cat didn't like it and to donate it.

I do this cause I am saving myself from buying $200 brand new batteries. Of course when I go buy the used batteries, I bring my battery reader and if I see at least, Good Battery, Recharge. Then I go and buy it, but it has to say, Good Battery, before I buy it.

Hey Scotty excellent video I have been getting batteries from Wal Mart for years and had no problems. Since they really only carry one type of battery for each kind of car, they don't play the product differentiation game and try to sell you low, mid, and high end ones and get all the mark up. Going to Wal Mart for a battery is like going to a local Gas Station for milk. You might think the grocery store has the best deal on milk but the gas station often only carries one kind with an exclusive deal from a local distributor and if it's not the absolute cheapest, it is close and much better quality. The grocery store raises the price on the good milk because they still need the cheap stuff to sell.
Just a little Vermont wisdom as we still have dairy cows up here.
Quick battery question Scotty - why is it when you take a battery out of a car, say over night why do you want to avoid keeping it off a concrete floor? In VT we have to put it on the board to avoid killing the battery especially when it's cold. Is there a a good reason for that or is it just a myth?

I believe there is some truth but not because concrete sucks the life out of the battery but is colder "not insulated like a board or thick rug". Basically cold does affect the life of a battery.
