  • Hey all! I've seen that lots of you asked me to react to this band, so here we are!
Nightwish is an old known band, I even played some covers through my carreer, but I barely ever paid attention to it beyond the drums i had to learn.
Let's give their latest single (3 years old already) a spin and see what's up!

She's not "into" pop, per se. It just that she's versatile enough that she can easily do pop. You have to listen to her songs to begin to realize how many tools are in her toolbox. Pop, rock, metal, jazz, opera, folk, stage, and even a Disney Princess. She is one of the most remarkable singers ever.

I'm glad that I met a connoisseur of Nightwish music today - you have a new subscriber here for that.
"How's The Heart" is from the album "Human :||: Nature" (9th) released exactly 4 years ago, in April 2020. This year we are waiting for the release of album no. 10!

@@patrodenFloor’s singing style is quite different than what you remember from earlier Nightwish. They’ve also evolved into a live performance band.
You may want to revisit older songs redone with the new singer in addition to exploring the newer music from Endless Forms Most Beautiful and Human Nature.

Interesting you say about how this song could be played with just an accoustic guitar. Yes, very true. Nightwish has been playing it this way in concerts, after Floor and Troy (the new multi instrumentalist who joined the band in 2013 with Floor) played it this way on a Planet Rock video.

The first singer, Tarja Turunen, was operatic. The second singer Anette Olzon, was only a pop singer. This singer, Floor Jansen sings in whatever style best suits every song. The bagpipe sound is actually Irish Uilleann (elbow) pipes played by the sixth band member, the multi instrumentalist Troy Donockley, who plays many wind and string instruments plus he is singing backing. To hear him and Floor performing an acoustic version of this song follow this link. ua-cam.com/video/yYtkPpFYzOo/v-deo.htmlsi=W3Da2kFwRZ-cOxhk

Each experience Nightwish provides is pretty unique, of course, with some common elements you’ll identify. Wacken 2013 seems to be the common starting place. You can’t beat the live shows.
Floors singing style is full of color, range and diversity. Perfect for Nightwish. Enjoy the journey!

Accoustic capable, you named it ! In the corresponding tour they often used the accoustic version of that. There's a live rendition by "Planet Rock" with just Floor and Troy on guitar, I highly recommend. Needless to say it's the singer that needs to carry the song on her shoulders...

The Nightwish formula always the same?
With all respect to your opinion you should listen to Romanticide, Devil and the deep dark ocean, The Poet and the Pendulum, Yours is an empty hope, My Walden, Week fantasy, The greatest show on earth, Song of myself, Tribal, Dark chest of wonders, Slow love slow, Shoudder before the beautiful... By all respect THEN you know the formula. The new album is coming in 2024
How's the heart acustic live at Planet rock is the better version.
My favourite is Song of myself (Wacken 2013) and Yours is an empty hope ( Wembley 2015). I would love to see you taking the long full ride. Thank you.

Tuomas does have very strong mannerism though, especially with Nightwish. A strong emphasis on taking a big turn in C part, it's what the audience expects and what he nearly always delivers.

@@patroden interesting choice for a 1st reaction to the most reacted to band on YT ever, who are always best Live ,their Wacken 2013 concert is a standard setting event and also the most reacted to on YT, but I have never after seeing almost 100 live shows of some of the greats seen a band with such diversity in their songs ,their sound while distinctly NW ,each song is different in structure and composition and according to the very many music producers, composers ,sound recording engineers, lyricists,& musician reactors NW is one of the most unique & talented performers who's songs never sound the same

I enjoyed the way you did the breakdown of the song. Most reactors don’t provide that level of detail. Floor and Nightwish are my all-time favorite singer and band and I am older than dirt. I do wish that you would have picked a live version of another song. This was a formula song, verse, chorus, repeat. Most of Nightwish songs are not in that format. The start, middle and end are different. ‘Song of Myself’ is a good example. The best way to experience Nightwish is live performances. Floor Jansen’s live vocals are better than most singer’s studio work. Her versatility, power and pitch perfect voice are unmatched. She does everything from growls to opera and everything in between. Tuomas (keyboards, founder, composer) does not write filler songs. Each is different and excellent. 😄🤘

the video’s are always taken care of down to the last detail. But Nightwish is 1000 times better in their live performances. Always super good.

Tuomas is quite poetic so he'll use phrases that are not in common usage. The "Rope" represents the length of our life. so to "Burn the Rope" is to spend some time actually living vs. just existing.
BTW, Nightwish music is very diverse, and while it may retain a distinct Nightwish flavour, each song is different. Their catalogue runs from a jazzy song, to ballads, thrash metal, power metal, old fashioned 80's metal, sometimes very symphonic and other times not. They've even incorporated some death metal elements in one song (yup, Floor can growl).

    An excellent reaction!
I like the way you listen to the whole song before you give your opinion. Your analysis was also very good. Your professional experience gave you good insight into the music.
In a way it’s a shame that you chose this song because, as you say, it’s quite a simple song and it doesn’t really show what the band is really capable of.
Anything from the live concert at Waken 2013 is good, particularly their opener “Dark Chest Of Wonders”. You will be really impressed with the sound quality and mix.
I’m looking forward to your next Nightwish reaction.
    Greetings from the UK.

Burn the rope and dull the blade refer to getting rid of the tools/thoughts of ending your life, and keeping on living instead. Other people can help with that by noticing you and asking how you're doing.
The heartbeat rhythm travels between each instrument and even the cadence of the vocals. It's quite gimmicky, but why not. Nightwish is often playful.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

The fact that you recorded a Nightwish song in 2009 and had no idea there was another singer from 2006 to 2012 puts a nasty grin on my face. For me, Anette is an incomprehensible mistake.
There is a campfire version of this song. Originally improvised for the promo tour, this version made it into the stage program. Singer Floor is impressive. It was later replaced by the campfire version of another song. These acoustic versions will probably remain with us:
Nightwish - How's The Heart Acoustic (Planet Rock acoustic session)
Troy is responsible for the folk instruments and he doesn't play string instruments. He plays flutes/bagpipes and guitars.
Others have already promised to play a few Nightwish songs and then there were more ;-) For those in a hurry, the musical interpretation of the change from Tarja to Anette:
