  • This video for The Islander by Nightwish made me so sad. It's beautifully touching but it went places that I really didn't expect. This was so well-made and so creative! Videos like this are exactly why I love music videos. The craft on display is amazing. I watched the Making Of video after watching this and I guessed most of how they made it right! I only ever watch them after filming as I'm afraid it would spoil my reaction. Anyway, let me know what your favorite part is of this beautiful video!

Hi - i worked on the VFX for this one, mainly on compositing and grade. I was not on the set, but from what i heard, it was a very, very difficult location to work at.
No miniatures on the one. It's all real full scale shots, or CGI by Lapland studios. The foregrounds of most shots (including fire) are real, save for some additional sparks and enhancing the ring of fire in the top down shot where it showed that it was not actually a perfect ring in the set (again, a difficult location). The far backgrounds are CGI, either matte paintings (by the director himself, BTW) or 3D or a mix of the two. No greenscreen to speak of, would have been impossible to build at that location and that budget. Instead, a LOT of tracking and tedious roto work by hand in post.
Pretty much everything else about the post was tedious too, considering the scale and scope of the project, and the limitations of computers and software. At the time, almost all videos were still SD, and going for 720p was stretching everything to the limit. Full HD would have been near impossible to pull off in practice. Doing something like this would still be a lot of work in 2024, but much more manageable, even at higher resolutions.
Trivia: the ocean waves that can be seen when the anchor drops were shot by me, when on a holiday trip on Madeira islands with my wife, from the top of a real hundreds of meters tall cliff. You never know where your home videos may end up ;-)

I watched the making of video after having done this reaction and realized it had all been done on location - just absolutely incredible (or insane, lol). Very ambitious either way. Beautiful matte paintings - he is definitely very multi talented. Incredible also to realize how far tech has come since then.
Hilarious little tidbit about the ocean waves!!! \o/ It's true, sometimes you'll use the most random bits of video!

It was filmed on location in Finland, the link below to the Making of is very interesting on how they did the music video.
This track with Marko singing was what hooked me on Nightwish.

Great analysis again - I was someone who suggested the 'making of' video, and as you were commenting I kept thinking "you'll get your answer there". I have watched the _Imaginaerum_ movie 4 times now, and would recommend it; but if you have had a loved one with dementia, bring tissues. I've cried every time. There are stylistic parallels with _MirrorMask,_ if you know that one, though it's very different tonally.

I really appreciate the perspective and your thoughts as a film maker of these masterpieces that I have enjoyed musically for many years! Have you ever considered reacting to a Rammstein video? The videos to Deutschland, Zeit and Adieu are visual masterpieces on par with any top notch Hollywood production. I guarantee you will have SO MUCH to nerd about in any (or all?) of these three. They are all in my top 10 of favourite music videos ever.

@@manondereeper I understand, and of course it's totally your decision. Just pointing out that all that remained are unsubstantiated allegations and federal criminal ivestigations went nowhere. And Rammstein are definitely not the only well known artists that have taints on their reputation.

Thank you! I loved watching this reaction! It was really interesting to hear opinions from a filmaker's perspective. :) I have always loved this Islander video. Even if the video and the song itself are a bit sad, somehow I find it soothing. I love Marko's voice in this. He was also the one who composed the song and Tuomas made the lyrics.
Have you heard of the band Within Tempation? They are Dutch.
They have this really cool music video for their song Paradise. Have you seen it? It also features Nightwish's old singer Tarja. Obviosly the song itself is great too, but I think the music video is awesome (it does look quite expensive too). And it has over 100 million views which I think is huge! Please react to that one if you haven't already seen it :) (although I would anyway like to hear your thoughts about it)

Adults reflecting back to children's stories was kind of the overarching theme for Imagenarium album, so the children's book style visuals are most likely not a coincidence or artefact of technology used. I think they are very intentionally like that.
