As others have commented, the bull's head is the symbol for this annual metal festival in Wacken, Germany. The bull's head was the chosen logo because the area of the festival has historically been a huge cow pasture. The double finger is the universal sign for metal music. It's first use is often credited to the great Ronnie James Dio who started using it on stage. He is Italian and he got it from his grandmother - it is an old Italian cultural sign used to ward off evil.

@jorluo Yes, I watched a video here on YT about 5 or 6 years ago where Ronnie was being interviewed and he said he used to walk with his Grandmother when she would take his Grandfather lunch and he would see her using the sign. I was fortunate enough to see Black Sabbath on the Heaven and Hell Tour, or what became known as the Black and Blue Tour because they were touring with Blue Oyster Cult.

Yep, over here in Sweden there's something called "vasst emot" (lit. "sharp against"), where something pointy is directed towards the source of the perceived evil. Basically the same concept as the corna (sign of the horns). In special cases, something sharp that had been used to kill someone could be used for extra potency 😲

Wacken is in North Germany and the biggest open air festival in Europe. In this video there were 82K+ audience. Remember that the vocal leadsinger only was 10 months with the band at that time. She came as a substitute for Anette Olzon, who became sick in the middle of the worldtour. NW called Floor and she said yes. She took the flight from the Netherlands to Salt Lake City where she joined the band on their way to Seattle for the next concert. She had to learn the setlist in 48 hours and Ghost Love Score wasn't even on that list, but because she loved this song so much NW put it on the list. The previous singer(s) didn't do the last part of the song, so she maid it her own and delivered this MASTERPIECE 10 months later here at Wacken 2013. Greetings from the Netherlands

Hello BARS & BARBELLS ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
To briefly answer your question at the end: no, Nightwish is not a satanic band. In fact, they do not promote religious views of any kind. The band members are rather rationalists and agnostics. Of course, their lyrics are poetic and full of metaphors, many of which have spiritual values.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I just posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community

Hello and welcome to the phenomenal world of Nightwish! They're from Finland and the singer you just saw is Floor (from Flora, Goddess of Flowers and Spring) Jansen (Yahn-sen). She is Dutch and their 3rd and current singer. At the moment of this Wacken (Vah-ken) 2013 concert she was only 10 months with the band replacing their 2nd singer who left the band midway the US leg and midway their World Tour. She had only 48 hrs to learn the setlist. They made a docu about it. Not one of NW's songs is the same. There are no ego's in this band, they put their hearts and souls into their music. Look in the comments for Gabriel Bardac. He welcomes new reactors to NW with a lot of info about the band and with a very long list and the right links to their songs.
Wacken is a small village in Northern Germany in a cattle region, hence the bull's sign ( so nothing creepy about that haha) and every first weekend in August is host to the largest metal festival in the world with and audience of 82K+.
The "organ pipes" are a prop but they resemble the monument in Helsinki to Jean Sibelius, a famous Finnish composer and violinist, and is a tribute to him.
I hope you will continue reacting to NW, and their deep rabbit hole, and I like to suggest "Song of Myself". Greetings from The Netherlands!

The bull is the symbol of the Wacken Open Air Music Festival. It is in Germany, so it's pronounced Vacken. For those really into metal, Wacken is one of THE open air festivals in the world. They played for over 82,000 people at that concert. Floor Jansen is the lead vocalist, and is more commonly referred to as the Valkyrie. Gabriel has been here, and his list is recommended. The group has spiritual lyrics at times, but espouses no particular religion. The keyboardist, Tuomas, is responsible for the lion's share of the songwriting. Gabriel's list is recommended, but pleasae do check out some more stuff. Floor has done some solo work on her own channel that is also worth a look. Welcome to Nightwish!

To add to this, Wacken is a small town of around 2000 people, which is otherwise mostly known for cow farming, hence the cow skull. This fire installation is situated between the two largest stages, which are side by side.
Such a small town could imaginably easily be overwhelmed by 80-90,000 metalheads, but they do such a great job, and seem to embrace the festival. The locals will have "speak-easys" in their front yards, and you will have grannies sitting in their yards watching the commotion and throwing the horns back at you, when you greet them. Even the police are super relaxed, and one officer told me that the shifts on Wacken are by far mostly enjoyable and uneventful. The area is massive, and you will walk a lot, but it's not one of the greatest metal fests for no reason.

You were wondering about the pipe-organ lookng thing: that's simply stylish stand to hold the 3 keyboards the keyboardist uses to play all the orchestral elements of their songs. And to hold/hide his wine bottle. In some videos I've seen from this tour it has flames coming out of the pipies for some extra flair that's missing here, but that's the reason for its existence: to look cool.

    • @deeteenw

It's a replica of a monument in Helsinki that was given to them, and has no other purpose but to look cool. The monument is located at the Sibelius Park in the district of Töölö in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland.

and an angelic female voice that is very pleasing to me. Nightwish is one of the best in this genre and if you pursue listening to them, be sure to include their two earlier singers. There are other great Symphonic Metal bands out there such as Epica, Within Temptation and Visions of Atlantis.

Welcome to Nightwish. As you could see from this one epic masterpiece, they can play many different styles of music, from the lighter, almost classical to the very heavy metal. Many, many great songs from them left to see.
Legend has it that the "horns" sign with the hand was first brought into metal music by Ronnie James Dio. His story was that gesture was learned from his grandmother, I believe, and was a gypsy gesture. If your palm was pointed toward the person, it meant you were giving them the "evil eye". If the back of your hand was facing the person, it was meant as a protection from the "evil eye".

You right that Ronnie from Black Sabbath popularized the horns sign in metal. Floor has definitely adopted it as her own.
In the Portuguese and Brazilian cultures which I come from the horn is a horrible sign. It’s used when the wife is a bit promiscuous in a relationship. One would show it to the husband signifying that she put horns on him because she now a “cow”. So yeah don’t show it to anyone in Portugal or Brazil 😂😂😂. Another footnote. We off to Berlin to watch Nightwish on the 9th June. Cannot wait. Stay safe 💥💥💥

This is called Symphonic Metal, metal music with a backing orchestra and sometimes choirs plus most of the time with a female lead singer who is usually a soprano. The backing orchestra is on a backing track and is the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The "Organ" is a fake front behind which hides Tuomas Halopainen's two and sometimes three Korg synthesizers plus his usual bottle of wine. Nightwish was the headliner band in front of 82,000 people. They are huge everywhere in the world except the US. They are pretty big on the US two coasts plus some cities in the US heartland.

I hope this helps 👍🎹🎼🎶

82,000 there, the first corps of the Nightwish Army. Tuomas (keyboard) is the genius behind the music, Floor is the face of the band. The best band in the world. Floor can sing anything, any genre, and the band work so well as a team the Floorgasm hits before you realise. Nordic goddess, Elven warrior queen, and even some human in there.

Nightwish Shadow Unit from Estonia reporting in ! Valkyrie Goddess spotted ! Gabriel Bardac entered !
Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.
And the master of this magic is:
Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people. The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.
We hope, that there is more coming.
    NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish.

    And they make Symphonic Metal.
What you've heard here is just the tip of what this band can do.
Nightwish really hits you in your heart.
And that's what makes this band so unique.

Wacken is German, so the W pronounces as a V. Vah-kin.
13:30 The Floorgasm brings yet more converts to the family !! 😁 Welcome Brother & Sister. You are each now one of us now. Just FYI, that’s about 70 minutes into the show, and Floor had been killin’ it the whole way already. Also, that’s 82 THOUSAND people hanging on her every word; so, no pressure on her to Bury that (9 second long)high note.... At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. I love watching these reaction videos and my biggest hope is that people follow and enjoy the Symphonic Metal path I was led to. Welcome to it.
A breathtaking masterpiece sung by a Valkyrie Goddess… or what Nightwish thinks of as just another day.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites:
    Energize me: ua-cam.com/video/fjm4BrNAf6s/v-deo.html
    Monolith of Doubt: ua-cam.com/video/3TmKHkQx45U/v-deo.html
    Dreamflight: ua-cam.com/video/73-_F9prx4I/v-deo.html
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). Here is a link to a part of a TV show (with english subtitles) of the reunion of the class of the Rock Academy with mostly backstage footage of the Tampere concert of Nightwish in 2015: ua-cam.com/video/B3NIfu0qvtg/v-deo.html
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples:
    Misery’s no Crime: ua-cam.com/video/SNPesLFTnUg/v-deo.html
    Disdain: ua-cam.com/video/tIqzPXzhEuw/v-deo.html
    Wild card: ua-cam.com/video/GpZMFALYeGc/v-deo.html
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ua-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/v-deo.html
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see:: ua-cam.com/video/bAiPeSsqD-4/v-deo.html
A suggestion to a christmas song sung by Floor. Here is a link to a performance in Finland with a special guest with the best seat you could imagine: ua-cam.com/video/ym1Wc5dmUYc/v-deo.html
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa:, ua-cam.com/video/QqdvFPBGN0c/v-deo.html
and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini: ua-cam.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/v-deo.html
As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in the last year. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish:. ua-cam.com/video/QW_3F186_5Q/v-deo.html
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughter Freja (6 years old this month), and another on its way, a horse and pony, a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

I’ve been a hard rock and heavy metal fan since the early 1980’s, and I’ve never once known a person who does the “Devil horns “ for any other reason than to express that they are rocking out, and loving the music.
You are the 2nd reactor I’ve watched that brought up the “Satanic “ aspect, which absolutely has nothing to do with Nightwish, or 99% of metal bands.
Tipper Gore and the PMRC really spread a lot of misinformation back in the day.

Great reaction. Northern New England Division of the Nightwish Army checking in. Welcome to the amazing world of symphonic metal, the glorious mash up of symphonic composition, orchestral instruments, and heavy metal. Nightwish was headlining the Wacken (Vah-ken) Open Air Festival in front of 82,000 fans. It is one of the biggest Metal Fetivals in the world. Wacken is located in Germany and is normally a sleepy little cattle ranching village, thus the bulls head symbol for the festival. The metal horns hand gesture was popularized by Ronnie James Dio who replaced Ozzy Osbourne as the lead singer of Black Sabbath. Ozzy was known for flashing peace signs and Ronnie was looking for something to set himself apart so he adopted the hand gesture of his Sicilian grandmother. It was used to ward off the evil eye or put it on someone depending on how you do it. Definitely not satanic. Ronnie said he adopted it because it was a good fit with Black Sabbath, magical and powerful. Nightwish is hugely popular everywhere in the world but the US, I think because the US music industry tries to keep out music that doesn't fit their cookie cutter mold. When I saw them live last May in Boston with only 3000 other fans it was absolutely magical and the best concert I have ever been to in my life. If you continue the journey you will discover a 20 year catalog of amazing songs, from epic journeys like this, to straight forward metal songs to beautiful ballads to celticy folk songs and even a jig or two. Their lead singer, Floor, is a 6 ft Vakyrie of metal with amazing technique and one of the most versatile singers in the world and Tuomas the keyboardist writes some of the most beautiful music and poetic lyrics. The Army is ready to support your journey!

Thank you for the reaction, really loved. Just some piece of advice.... hold on tight, because you are going down the rabbit hole. But don't worry, it is a fun ride with this awesome band.
To answer your questions, the bull and the sign with the hands are not related. The bull is the mascotte of the festival. The signal with the hand is a friendly one, it is a signal for giving love peace and positive energy. You saw when the Floor gave the famous last high note, everyone was giving her the positive signal, after that, she returned the signal to the audience.
I saw Mr. Gabriel Bardac already reacted to your reaction. Take your time and read is very valuable info. In this is a lis with suggestions, it is really worth to look at it.

Anything from them will be a blast (live is better than studio with them!)
Here are some suggestions from other things to discover (maybe!)
Unleash the Archers "Awakening" - Full band playthrough version
Wagakki Band "Homura - Akatsuki No Ito" - this is a duo song in live / you can also try studio version of "Senbonsakura"
System of a Down "Chop Suey" and "Toxicity" - official videos
    Jinjer "Pisces"
Falling in Reverse "Im not a vampire" - you can do a double song reaction with that one, with the original version and the revamped one!
Tool "The pot" - studio version (just for the music, no video)
Heilung "In Maidjan" - live version at Castlefest 2017

One of the most natural reactions to Nightwish and GLS that I've seen (yes, I've seen plenty!). Glad you guys enjoyed your first experience with nightwish. That burning skull above the stage is the symbol for the wacken open air festival.
That being said, I'm not sure if any of the members are christians, but having listened to every nightwish song an infinite number of times, they aren't satanic either. Most of their songs have a fantasy premise to them. Their music is escapism, something you would listen to for the same reasons you would read jrr tolkien, or play dnd. They've got alot of beautiful songs. Check out "Over the Hills and Far Away" or "7 Days to the Wolves", maybe "Meadows of Heaven" or "Walking in the Air", or "Dark Chest of Wonders."
And if they ever tour near you, you owe it to yourself to come out and see them live. We get people from all walks of life at these shows, and we all have a great time. Deuces

Good reaction! Glad you enjoyed it so much , there's plenty more to discover. You were quite right to compare it to a film soundtrack - that's what the word "score" in the title is getting at, it's written as the score to a (nonexistent) movie. I discovered Nightwish in an odd way. In 2019 my son was playing violin in an orchestra accompanying a band which covered one of their songs, which was the highlight of the set for me; so when YT recommended this video (shortly before lockdown) I dived right in and still haven't come up for air! I saw them live for the first time last year, and they are even more amazing than in the videos. Enjoy your journey!
