I can't imagine how hard it is for Jerry to play this song; it was written for Layne, after all, when Layne was in his downward spiral, and it was Jerry's expression of love and friendship.
That’s one fact about this Ailce I didn’t know. I can’t imagine how hard it’s been for all of them. At the same time I imagine Jerry has a small amount of resentment towards Layne no matter how much he loved them just because of all the amazing music they could’ve made. I don’t think Jerry cares about the fame and fortune. He just loves music and is good at writing and composing it. I wish Layne had never touched smack. He was a special human outside of his singing/songwriting abilities.
I didn't know that. Although, in my neck of the woods this was one of the rare AIC tracks which got played on the radio, so our exposure to Layne and Jerry's work was limited. I've always loved the melody and lyrics of this song, and recently started learning the rhythm part on acoustic guitar. It's one of those songs that I most often find quite easy to play, but on occasion I struggle with parts of the verse. I look forward to adding Jerry's leads with an electric guitar for the chorus and solo.
@@anthonystark5412 I was fortunate enough growing up, and now slowly once again, having one of the best rock stations in this country. And I say that having extended visits and lived in the South, Midwest, NE and PNW. They’ve always played a wide range of bands’ songs and this always has been my favorite Alice song that made it on the air.
Totally, I feel like Staley set a high bar for him and people expect him to sound like him or be the same, but that's just not how it works. I think he's great
Chains has always been a pilot-co-pilot with vocals there’s only there will never be another layne but Duvall fits with chapter 2 his voice blends with Jerry’s just like laynes
Love that smile they give each other after chorus 1. These men are having fun and I love the fact they are still getting it done in 2022! I still go and see them whenever I can!
You don’t know Sean or any of these celebrities. You are wrong. Layne died many years ago and predating that it was obvious he was killing him self with drugs and didn’t care about living. So many things in life can make one sad, life is painful for everyone, Sorry, finally this is one of hundreds of performances since lagnes death.
To the People who don't like the lead singer...The music is theirs and they can choose to do what they want with it. Just because Layne overdosed, it does not mean that the rest of the band has to sit on their hands and let the music they helped create sit and die. By choosing to perform and create new music they have opened up the Layne years of the band to a whole new audience and in essence allowed Layne to live on forever.
B L then don't. I like Duvall. Phantom Limb is an awesome song that he wrote with Jerry. In time they'll evolve to be their own time. Layne is gone. He wasn't fired, he died. Move on.
OGJpeezy93 FUCKING A RIGHT!!!IM GOIMG TO SEE THEM NEXT MONTH AGAIN AND THEY HAVE SOME VERY VERY GREST NEW SONGS THAT NEVER WOULD HAVE EXISTED WITHOUT MOVING ON AND I LOVE DUVALL'S SINGING!!
I just don't know why they had to choose WD to be their singer. I see covers on youtube that sing with more feeling/more heart. He just doesn't seem right for the role
"You my friend, I will defend, and if we change well I'll love you anyway." - Layne Staley. This is such a beautiful line and it just gets me every time I hear it
Will does a great job !! ; nobody will ever be able to sing /sound like Layne. He was one of the best ever! What I like most about Will is he sings the songs in his voice. he's not trying to imitate Layne. He harmonizes great with Jerry, and when he sings lead, his voice works great with the songs. Plus, the last 3 albums with Will are excellent ! Is it 90s Alice ? No ,but it's still incredible music ! I'm glad they decided to carry on.
He's good but he isn't doing the same harmony which Layne sang. Layne picked notes that actually clashed with Jerry and were 7th and 9ths of the chord instead of 3rd and 5ths which Duvall is singing. listen to MTV unplugged and just focus on the harmony. Layne always sang the harmony like it was another lead vocal line and wouldn't fallow Jerry note for note
My wife and I were there on that magical night. Jerry mentioned that they were on their 3rd day of press and radio performances so they were only going to be able to play 2 or 3 songs for us… they went on to play 6 because we were cheering so hard. I’m guessing that the reason Jerry is looking at Will and they are smiling at each other is because William sang the 2x high part at the end of the 1st chorus instead of the standard melody and he was supposed to be saving his voice (the mentioned that to us) but Will couldn’t help belting out the higher note. They played like six songs in that little acoustic area and then went out to the main outdoor stage and played two or three more if I remember correctly.
Just like the Unplugged version. Man, I remember when Jerry said he felt jealous about Layne performing with Mad Season, like your girlfriend is with another dude. I feel the same as an onlooker this time with Jerry and WIlliam. But I still think William is awesome. In fact, I wanna thank him for being with Jerry, Layne is gone after all. David Nissim After two months of observation you are absolutely correct. Ever music video, live performance, interview, etc. Yet he still kicks fucking ass and is far underrated in my opinion.
Nothing against Duvall, God knows he has IMPOSSIBLE shoes to fill...but, I'm resolved (yes, after all these painfull years, months, weeks, hours, seconds w/o LAYNE) that they have to & want to go on. It's just hard, ya know? I'm pleasantly surprised tho, about how good that kid is in tribute band, "FACELIFT" is- that boy has some pipes, holy shit!!
This is good but it's slower and too light. But not bad. I can just never think it's as good without Layne, because it's not. But still good. Gotta give Jer Bear credit, I have to admit he's phenomenal.
You’re right, it’s a tad slow and reserved just a bit. My wife and I were there that night. Jerry mentioned that they were on their 3rd day of press and radio performances so they were only going to be able to play 2 or 3 songs for us… they went on to play 6 because we were cheering so hard. No, but I have stumbled upon a comment on other of their vids he's Layney Kravitz. Nice pun, not really fair to William. He's a superb singer and a decent guitarist, he fits the band pretty well. No, he's not Layne and he's not trying to be him. Choosing his own way was the best possible choice for keeping this band alive. Note he's not even a frontman - Jerry is. To me it's another band with strong accenture of its past achievement.
I just don’t understand why jerry couldn’t take the lead. I have no hate for the new guy but like he wasn’t needed, it would be ass good without him, don’t fix what’s not broken
Cantrell's highest non-falsetto note is B♭4 and he can't really hold a tone outside of his normal singing voice for more than a second. To sing a lot of old AIC songs and new ones he writes he needs DuVall for that extra range and tone.
@@motorologist no offense but no one cares about that, Eddie vedder can’t sing like he use to but it’s still Eddie vedder you feel me? Can’t say the same for AIC with the new guy
@@roadkxll_ That's true, it really doesn't feel the same. Jerry is still the lead lead vocalist for Duvall-era AIC though, he just uses DuVall for the higher note harmonies. If it was just Jerry alone, it could still be impressive, stuff like "Keep the Light On" and "Castaway" from his solo albums demonstrate this. But it would be odd for Cantrell to try to sing "Rooster" or "Bleed the Freak" live. He wrote both of those, but they're out of his range, so I'd like to know, how do you think it would go if it was just Cantrell? Would he just not sing those songs?
