I love how at around 1:30 the camera focuses on Jerry Cantrell, then refocuses back to Layne Staley depending on who is singing. Cantrell’s backup vocals are underrated.
Probably because Layne took a long time editing the video for MTV. Too bad they had a bit of falling off during the last session. Can't blame Jerry though (he wasn't saint himself) but working with a junkie who once was a man that you admired must have been tough and Layne who never could say "no" to the guys even though he couldn't and that made him ashamed and disappointed with himself. Sad story but that's how life goes sometimes...
Everything was so on point that night which is why it’s one of, if not the best showed ever played. The production team never gets mentioned but the camera angles and visuals they put on was so good
I swear I literally did this early this year, it was only maybe a minute in when I parked at work, put me a little late, so I gave up a real breakfast and had some kind of power bar instead. 😂
I'd like to hear a carjacker say those exact same words to me. How nice of him would it be to let me finish hearing the whole song before he pistol-whips me and jacks my car :)

At 2:46, when Layne is looking straight into the camera, it's absolutely haunting. Falling to pieces, this guy still had enough talent to go on stage with the rest of the band and put on one hell of a performance. Also, mad props to Sean Kinney and his work that night. Great drumming for an acoustic performance of each of those songs.
@@lincolnchildress6539 Its subjective...but for me Cantrell vocals shit on Vedder any day of the week. So much more badass and real...but that's just my opinion.
Jerry is a great singer and incredibly underrated. The two together are beyond amazing. Comparing him to Eddie is a bit of a stretch but both are heroes of mine
Yeah I don't think he's not trying, it's just that he was so damn good that he made it look effortless. He is singing well within himself here. He was capable of bringing a vocal so much more powerful than this but this intimate setting called for something more subdued. But wow - doesn't he nail it!
I think he's actually trying incredibly hard and even struggling at times, but he lands it. Layne was not a well man at this point and he only performed a few more times over the next few months before entirely withdrawing from society. It's incredibly sad to watch because we know how it ends, even though we all knew at the time how it was going to end, just not when.
I’d go more toward 99.9%. I’m not saying that to be funny. Layne hit notes that are almost impossible for trained singers to hit and doing it in as bad of a shape he was in, is nothing short of miraculous
As a 51 year old black man who grew up on the Arkansas Delta in the late eighties and early nineties I listened to hip hop, r& b and pop. Nothing wrong with that all. After graduating in 1990 and moving into my dorm room in Fayetteville, AR I stumbled across a cassette tape titled “Singles “ laying in the parking lot. Picked it up and put it in the tape deck in my room upstairs. The first song my ears fell up was “Would “ and I have never been the same. Later on the next day, I had the pleasure of seeing “Nevermind” and Nirvana. Mind blown!!! Grew up loving 70s funk and 80s pop but the 90s was something different. The music crossed all lines of race, politics, economics, etc. I’m so blessed to live through this time and share it with my children and everyone around me.
We had the absolute pleasure of growing up in the 80’s, and early nineties. I’m still blown away from all the aspects of music in those eras. There will never be anything like that ever again.
I’m also from Arkansas! I’m an 80’s baby (1986) and didn’t listen to AIC until I started dating my now husband who played them nonstop 😂 I would honestly be annoyed at the time and did not appreciate them or Layne at all. I thought they were just a band to smoke weed to lol Now as a 37 year old woman I get it. I’ve been exposed to so much music now and I finally understand. Laynes voice reaches a place in my soul that nothing else can touch. I kick myself for not letting it click sooner. Now I walk around our house singing would or love hate love or rooster and my husband just smirks at me with delight. He’s so proud 😂😂 What amazing happenstance that someone dropped that tape, and you were able to start your journey with Layne and the boys when you did. Such an awesome story.
Fuckyeah man. I either just turned 1 or wasn’t quite there yet whenever this was filmed. When “Dirt” came out I was negative 3. I was sorta into grunge and 90s stuff growing up but hadn’t heard more from AIC than Man in the Box which I always liked. Few months agi right here on UA-cam I had man in the box live version as suggestion. I realized how incredible those vocals truly were and listened to every single album on repeat since then. Wow was I missing out, and wow did I discover this at a very vulnerable moment in my life where I felt like I was Down in a Hole, but a good old Godsmack of some of the best music I’ve ever heard Would? be enough to at the very least show me that I’m not the only one that’s ever been through difficult times and something great can still come from it. In a Nutshell, it’s really helped with my depression and I honestly can’t Stay Away.
I grew up just east of Shreveport, the daughter of a southern musician, and as a child of the 80s, the Seattle Grunge hit right as I was coming of age in the mid-90s and absolutely changed who I was. It's dramatic and honest and bare and beautiful. And probably at least some part of why I live in the PNW now in my mid-40s. 😂❤
You just explained 90s music beautifully. I found a tape of this set in a truck my dad bought. I listened intently over and over, yet I'd never been exposed to grunge , only old country that my dad loved. It seemed so similar, yet had a sound that punched me in the gut
Layne died 19 years ago today; he was dying here and not only gave one of the best performances of all time, he still gave a better performance than anybody today. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, we miss you.
He wasnt fucking dying here you fool. This was like 5 years before he died. If he quit smack that day or even 2 years later he'd be still here today. That's not dying. And his performance here was lazy because he was high and cut notes sort and didnt bother hitting certain notes.
@@justinsayswtf , I saw them more than once before they were even famous while he was in his prime. Even when he got to this point he was still better than most.
It’s sad and at the same time impressive watching Layne on this unplugged, he looked so physically and mentally tired there, yet he managed to perform like a Pro! I’ve always loved his voice, was really unique! He seemed very sweet despite his background. ❤
Thought that was only on Sludge Factory because two of the studio execs which the song was essentially a diss at were in the front row and Layne got nervous
@@michaelr.4878 really? I think this Is really good, the acoustic Versions have a great personality of their own despite the originals being heavy metal, there's great feeling in the playing and singing. Singing could be better... But that guy was destroyed from drugs. Who would you say did fine on their unplugged?
@@elmotociclista9296 - Yeah dude, they did fine. Actually, it is great. I just don't think that it deserves the be considered to be this classic masterpiece that so many make it out to be.Yes it is good. But it could be a lot better. Like you said, Layne's drugs are to blame for him not having teeth, which really hurt his performance. However, that does not change the fact that he still sounded like a man without any teeth. You can not ignore that. It hurt the vocals big time. Yes, he hit the notes. Yes, there was haunting emotion in his voice. But him sounding like he had no teeth really, ,really hurt the sound. Jerry was the star of that show.
@@gogoat_2894 - Yeah, he had some teeth. But was missing either all of the tops or all of the bottoms. I can't remember which. But one whole row was missing. Look farther into the filming of that show. They went to special lengths to shoot Layne is certain ways to hide the state of his mouth. This is very well documented. But who cares what someone looks like..with music, it is the sound that matters and just by listening to that album, you can clearly hear the voice of someone who was missing a lot of teeth. Teeth was very, very important in singing. Why do you think that Freddie Mercury didn't have anything done to his teeth?...it was because he was afraid that it would mess with his trademark voice. Trust me, I am not speaking out of ignorance. If I didn't know what I was saying was true, I would not say it.

Our poor young people today have been so robbed when it comes to a musical legacy they can look back on & feel proud about. I'm 61& was a bit young to appreciate the music of the 60s. I was born in 63 but my parents made sure I was exposed to all the great music music from that time. Those my age have the musical legacy of the 60s ,70s, 80s, & 90s! I really feel so fortunate to have come up in those years. IMHO there really isn't much after the turn of the century worth listening to. Maybe that's harsh but after 2000 where did the talent go? Sure there were a few bright shining moments but overall....just pitiful. I feel really sad that kids from the last 20-25 years don't have much to b proud of in the way of a musical legacy😢
what saddens me the most that i was born 5th of april 2000. I was two years old when he died... 16 years later after his death i've found his music. Shame that such a execellent singer had to die.... I will always remeber him

Addiction doesn't discriminate. I believe it was his broken heart that hurt him the most. The love of his life died and she was irreplaceable. Given more time I believe he could have overcome it. I always wondered what he would have been like today, but I also think of all those who stigmatized him and hurt him and maybe they didn't deserve such an angel even at his worst. I know he's in a much better place now. Free from his demons, but I will always miss his voice. Rip Layne
@Kenba Mamba Layne had a cat named Sadie but he called it Yttik which is kitty backwards. Yttik outlived him sadly. Layne's mom knew something was wrong when there was no answer at his door but Yttik was meowing over and over inside. 😢
In the studio recording he sounds more angry about his addiction but in this performance he sounds so so sad... the look in his eyes is a look of despair and acceptance of his imminent death...Rest in Peace Layne.
I've heard He begged not to perform but they were trying to force him so he shot up 5 minutes before he came up. That's why he has glasses on the first 3 or 4 songs
Er... no, saying that "no one ever" has reached these high notes is silly. Of course they are perfectly feasible & there were, are and will be plenty of great singers out there. But the whole point is that he was combining his amazing vocal abilities with pure sonic badassery, unconventional heavy harmonies and a unique & original musical identity while fighting his own internal demons. And at times showing it to be so effortless & perfect while in fact it required huge effort & was so beautifully and tragically flawed.

The look he gives at the camera at 2:46 as he sings "am I wrong?" pierces right into my soul. At the same time its almost like he draws me right into the darkness of his own.
You can see what the real talent is when a guy in a terrible condition like Layne was back then can perform like he did. This song is incredible hard to sing, and I may say that I never seen someone sing it remotely near Layne did in this condition. Dude was one of a kind.
This is... and I'm not kidding.. the BEST live full performance of a band ever recorded. The drums are insane. The bass is haunting. Jerry Cantrell's leads on an Acoustic and his vocal harmonies...oh yeah and the soul of a man singing at his own funeral...(not to get too deep) but damn..... this can never be done again
I happen to agree with this. This is excellence. Even the audio engineers were ON THEIR GAME for this. Everyone down to the lady who lighted the candles and the janitor who dusted Sean Kinney's drums was on their A+ game for this recording. I mean that. This is performance and recording excellence here. Period.
You need to hear some more live music if this is in your opinion the best performance ever. Also he happened to live for about 5 years after this show so hardly singing at his own funeral. Pump the drama breaks.
@Alan Grove well said, my man. I saw them live in ‘19 with Duvall as the lead vocalist. He has one HELL of a voice and he’s done great things for AIC. But in regards to this performance, untouchable. The sound. The emotion. The lyrics. A masterpiece. My favorite album of all time.

Yeah i read a review that said without this guys drumming the whole acoustic set would be ruined, the magic is playing just right, not to loud that makes everyone else play louder drowning everything else.
Layne looked like an upright corpse during this show. He was so incredibly sick. It amazes me that he survived another 5 or 6 years after this show. I won't call that period of time living, he just survived as long as he could.
He really does look bad. But yeah after Demri died..5-6 months after this show he became a hermit. There's kind of a Concensus that he didn't overdose his body just couldn't handle anymore. His will to live left with Demri. I truly hope they are together now and he's singing to her with his beautiful voice somewhere. It hurts me to look at him. He cut himself off so much he was dead for two weeks before anyone knew. A famous person.... that shouldn't happen to anyone. RIP Layne.
I believe he opened for KISS for a few shows before ODing. But he showed up for the Grammy’s in 97, and there’s some pics from that period (some he doesn’t look physically well, others he seems fine). He entered rehab 12 times in his life - Artificial Red by Mad Season is about Methadone. I forget how many times he had OD’d and stopped his heart before it finally gave out. Rest easy Layne🖤

Turn off the lights, plug the headphones in and close your eyes while listening to this masterpiece. They don’t make music like this anymore. Layne no doubt had the best and most powerful gut wrenching beautiful voice of the 90’s period. Miss this guy so much. Addiction sucks.
As an addict I want to just say that Laynes beauty was born in his addiction. Drugs make us reach further than humanity does. We hurt people, we dont mean to, but we find great art within us.
Addiction sucks dick. Fuck addiction. Awesome song. Totally agree that the ONLY way to listen to it is uninterrupted, loud, with your eyes closed.....yep perfect!!
@@craigtuohy Agree to disagree. I don't think drugs made Layne or Jimi Hendrix as talented as they are. Infact I truly believe that both were capable of so much more, not that they needed to. A decision that could cost you your life. Just my thoughts on drugs, man. I hope you can one day beat the drugs. I think that the vocals are extremely overrated. I really dig the studio version of this song. But the vocal performance in this song is rather weak. It suits the song...sure. But the power in his voice is gone and his missing teeth is very apparent. Totally changes his singing.
@@michaelr.4878 Dude, of course his vocals here aren't his best because of his drug addiction. This show is legendary because you could see and hear so much emotion. Not bad for their first show after 2 and a half years.
Layne is simply one of the greatest live singers of all time. So sad that the most talented are often the most troubled, almost as if we only deserve their gift for a short time. The words that Don McLean said of Vincent Van Gogh could serve to describe Layne and Kurt and all the others we've lost: "this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."
One of the best songs ever written. The tension play between the normal/monotonous to the extreme/other worldly is amazing. Layne Staley is beyond belief.
Agreed. I have listened to this SO many times ...it has been the official video but just tonight found this. The whole song is haunting but when the chorus and key changes... I get goosebumps, shivers and tears in my eyes.

I loved the original but this unplugged version takes it to a whole new level. Utterly stunning vocals from both. There's a look in Layne's eyes that feels like he knows what lies ahead for him.
Ive never heard of any vocals who’s as distinct as Layne Staley. His voice is so unique no singer can actually match it. He’s got a strong swangy voice with a lot of angst. It’s just incredible. RIP Layne Staley wherever you are. I hope you found peace in your last moments.
Demri was there. He found peace in the end. But the story of his last day(s) are so tragic ...his last words were probably to Mike "not like this, it can't end like this...don't leave me like this..."
Layne was extremely talented, one of the most talented artists of he century. his voice is UNMATCHED. He helped me through so much in life and many others. When Layne sings the first “Am I wrong?” after the last chorus and he’s looking right into the camera, I can’t help but see the look in his eyes, the way they close, and wonder if he knows he’s “gone too far to get home?” I don’t pretend to know what he went through, but you can tell the man is hurting. Layne was not a well man at this point and he only performed a few more times over the next few months before entirely withdrawing from society. It's incredibly sad to watch because we know how it ends, even though we all knew at the time how it was going to end, just not when.
He most definitely was trying, and nailed it.

Delusional. I love Layne’s voice and interpretation but the quality of his singing is non-existent
I thought they were just a band to smoke weed to lol
Now as a 37 year old woman I get it. I’ve been exposed to so much music now and I finally understand. Laynes voice reaches a place in my soul that nothing else can touch. I kick myself for not letting it click sooner. Now I walk around our house singing would or love hate love or rooster and my husband just smirks at me with delight. He’s so proud 😂😂
What amazing happenstance that someone dropped that tape, and you were able to start your journey with Layne and the boys when you did.

@@michaelr.4878 What is wrong with you ? He had "teeth". Watch the video.

Rip Layne

Er... no, saying that "no one ever" has reached these high notes is silly. Of course they are perfectly feasible & there were, are and will be plenty of great singers out there. Try to see it once my way
Drifting body it's sole desertion
Flying not yet quite the notion
Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
And left you here alone?
Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
And left you here alone?
If I would, could you?

Respect to the team filming and recording unplugged. They are preserved in amazing quality
awesome point it was the last we would ever get of this band but they put it down so well
When Layne sings the first “Am I wrong?” after the last chorus and he’s looking right into the camera, I can’t help but see the look in his eyes, the way they close, and wonder if he knows he’s “gone too far to get home?”
I don’t pretend to know what he went through, but you can tell the man is hurting. However, even in his darkest days he brought so much to the table and so much out of us from that powerful angry angel voice of his. Let’s remember him for that. He was much more than his addiction.
One of the greatest frontman in the music history
Terrible frontman, amazing singer.
@@robertstewart4953 not terrible, but you can't say he's amazing, scott weiland was an amazing frontman.
@@TheAndreluizcarneiro
LMAO. Layne>>> Scott
@@ilyaost5476 That's just your opinion, pal.
@@TheAndreluizcarneiro
Well,If you really look at it realistically every comparison in music is an opinion. But if you actually go by the consensus of what people say, Layne >> Scott by far. Layne is seen by many as the only equal to Chris Cornell from the 90s, Who is seen as the greatest vocalist since Robert Plant. Weiland is a good vocalist but he is completely outclassed when compared to people at that caliber. Open a discussion of Scott vs Layne/Chris and I can assure you Scott gets destroyed.
That strong bass line in the intro 🤘🤘🎶🔥🔥🔥🔥
@rajivaksha dasa RiP MIKE STARR'
i can play this on my acoustic bass and i always do when im bored. and i love playing this song on guitar too! i wish i wasnt such a loner and i could play with someone else... but eh its just my way
I find it to be quite ordinary
3:02 Man... i can see through his eyes all the pain he felt. Poor Layne... it's rough seeing him like that.
The man was fighting some serious demons
Jesus, Layne really was effortless in his ability. God rest his soul.
considering he was high and nodding off during the show and still sounded amazing, I couldn't agree more
Kurt Cobain was another, effortless vocal prowess, endless ability, an infinitely tortured soul.
I’m addicted to this song. I keep coming back over an over again.
Me too 😢 it worries me lol Idk I just love everything about it, dark bass the guitar and the harmonies
JohnBoy same here
Absolutely just a badass song!
All Day ery day

Layne Staley seems so innocent and vulnerable, almost childlike for this show. A tortured soul and an immense talent. I hope he found peace and is thriving in the afterlife. ... RIP
in deaths grip
Layne’s voice resonates his pain. So powerful!
He had no pain during this concert. He was to high to have pain.
@@mattbailey576 Addiction is a bad thing it suppresses issues you have hidden deep within your soul. This concert he exposes his pain through his voice.
Layne Staley is perfect example of what the disease of drug addiction does to a human being. If only something could have changed for him and he would have recovered. What an awesome talent! Love his voice. Don't know him, never met him. but I can empathize with his struggles
This is truly the only band that breached both the metal and grunge genres. We all wanted to have them.
Love you Alice in Chains
RIP Layne Staley Love you brother
The face he makes at 3:29 for a split second while looking at the song list tells you everything you need to know about the state he was in. Layne Staley is a once in a century talent and he is missed.
I always wondered why he did that face.
i think he thought that he probably didn‘t perform this song well enough for himself. i always perceived it like him making kind of a little joke like „puh well that was a challenge‘ but maybe i‘m wrong but that‘s the way i interpreted it always.
Aww poor Layne he looked like he was about to cry 😭 oh I wish that someone would save that night 😞
@@hinthecage4928 It seems like he might've messed up the end a bit. Maybe he didn't hold out the last "you" long enough.
That bass brings people back from the dead
It's rather ordinary
It is fucking amazing!
if only it bought back layne staley from the dead
@@skrumpo it did me and Layne and Gandhi are chilling at my place
u now have the big gay
damn, you is lucky
As someone who’s struggled with alcohol addiction for the best part of ten years, this song is so cathartic to me. When I relapse - “into the flood again”. When those supporting me reach their limit, “so I made big mistake.” “Have I rowed too far to get home?”
He knew how sick he was and it just made his vocals and lyrics that much more authentic. Absolute legends.
how can he look so fragile and at the same time be so on point vocally... what a talent...
19 años sin vos Layne... es muy triste que leyendas como él ya no estén en este Mundo. Espero que donde sea que te encuentres, finalmente hayas encontrado la paz eterna.
HASTA SIEMPRE LAYNE STALEY.
Every time one of their unplugged songs pop up i say "there goes the next hour" bc i have to hear them all. They mean just as much to me now as they did then. The harmonies, the raw power of laynes voice, kenny's drums, Jerry's lead and the lyrics....the goddamn soul crushing lyrics. Knowing this was it, the last of them
You summed up exactly my feelings.
Layne hits the notes so perfectly, it's so satisfying. Like popping bubble wrap
as someone, that loves great analogy and theories over great music, i love your comment. i was screaming through my whole house "i like this, I LIKE THIS". beautiful comment, my friend!
weird analogy but ok
2:04
This man's vocals are hauntingly impressive. His sustain ability was untouched and he really put some moves on this one without actually barely moving
I shall never get tired of watching this or commenting. Layne's performance is beautiful yet tragic. He seems so fragile. Just wanna take him in your arms and never let him go😔
Same. No homo.
@@cornwallets5385 lol
I have the same feeling.
This version is amazing. The end makes me cry every time. Uplifting but sad that Layne couldn't get past his demons😢
It’s so sad to see how he’s so high and destroying himself but his voice still remained so beautiful
It's incredible

How do you know that he was high? Sorry If that a stupid question!
That acoustic bass intro, followed by the twang of the guitars gives me goosebumps every time.
0:01 the moment you realize you can't live without the acoustic bass
tealize👍🏽
Right !! this is one hard beautiful bass jam
This still gives me chills all these years later...
I cant believe 20 years later this still brings tears to my eyes.

So does that woman in your profile.
Me too
I'm a grown ass man and the last "am I gone" lyrics made me cry.....always be my favorite lead singer of all time!

The Drummers dynamics throughout this performance is really remarkable! Kudos!
Regret not seeing them in their prime. The documentary about him done a few years ago is great. For some reason his story really sticks with me as the saddest of all the great vocalists from that era 😢
