In my opinion, Will is a much better vocalist and front man than Layne. I came to that conclusion after looking at some Videos of Layne in concert back when he still was kicking ass, and when he was slowing down. Then I saw AIC with Will live, and heard their cover of Rush's Tears, and was blown away at the vocal range on Will. I've heard will hit notes that Layne could not quite hit.

In 2015 they played golf (Yes Golf ) at a course I worked at and I saw Jerry and Mike up in the parking lot and let him know I was a fan he grabbed 5 guitar picks and gave them to me from his rental car .. So nice I still have them of course one of my favorite bands growing up as a kid ..

It was only after Layne died that Jerry got help for his addiction. Layne may have played a role in Jerry still being with us today and if so, then he didn’t die in vain.

His passing effected so many people & changed the trajectory of their lives too. There are many lives he has saved & impacted in a positive way. Laynes light burned twice as bright & burned out twice as fast, but left a glow behind that will shine forever.

I just had this conversation literally the other day. Layne had such an amazing voice. Even with all the drugs he still had such power and control in his tone. There are many great singers but two singers that will never be matched are Layne and Chris Cornell.
True, Layne did have a unforgettable unique voice.And there will NEVER be another voice like Chris Cornells either.

Sean always looks really sad at every show they've played since their reunion. He's always had a rather serious look while playing, but you can tell he's still visibly shaken by Layne's death, even 18 years later.

He’s just sober now.
I always tell people that old saying " time heals all wounds " is not necessarily always the case. Some wounds are so deep, so traumatizing,.that time doesn't have much effect on them. Time only reveals how to keep the grief manageable.

Matt Pinfield is a great interviewer. He asks smart questions and is interested in hearing the answer. He actually listens instead of trying to interject or cutting them off like many journalists do.

Jerry's voice is velvet. I could listen to him talk for hours.
I first heard Jerry's voice like most people in AIC songs,then I seen interviews with him.the guy's addictive-his voice is so comforting and reassuring even when talking about heartbreak👍🤟

Sean is usually so funny and here it's striking how he suddenly looked introspective and closed up like he was lost in thoughts and memories. His eyes looked really sad, losing a friend like Layne and the way it all happened is not something you can get over.

And they say that "heroin" isn't even "heroin", these days, but instead illegal "fentanyl" from China or Mexico--not to be confused with legal, pharmaceutical-grade fentanyl from a pharmacy or a surgeon.
The illegal fentanyl is much stronger than heroin and has caused many fatal Over-Doses over the past few years...
That’s why he’s written some of the best and most relatable music ever. One of the best songwriter of all time and a great dude in general
I loved them as a teen. My daughter recently passed from addiction and fentanyl poisoning. It was not an overdose, she was poisoned by fentanyl. She wasn’t aware it was in what she used. It’s been about five months. I haven’t been able to listen to music since, makes me cry or get emotional. I can listen to Alice In Chains constantly. It’s so cathartic. It’s getting me through the absolute worst part of my life. Layne has been gone so long as he’s still here getting people through life. I appreciate this band so much more now then as a teen. I’m so glad it stood the test of time. Only great bands do. I always loved his voice but as an adult the guitar is so god damn good too. All of it is great lyrics included. Thank you Alice In Chains & Layne for getting me through this nightmare. Much luv to you all. 💛🤘🏻
Oh, man. Sean looks crushed. God bless him - I wasn't anticipating that strong of a reaction from him. I saw AiC this past Sept, 2018, and Layne was all over that concert. They played a lot of songs Layne wrote. It was emotional. At the end of the show, Jerry gave a shout out to his "fallen brothers, Layne and Mike." I will always love AiC. Even 16 years after his premature and tragic death, the shadow of Layne Staley looms, large. I hope he knows how much he is still loved and missed.

I remember watching another interview with Sean and William and seeing the look on Sean's face when William brought up Layne. Yeah, you could tell he really misses him.
lynettec66 Sean really tried to keep in touch with Layne, but Layne stopped answering the phone and his door. Sean actually went on record saying that "I wanted to just pull him out of his apartment and get him clean. But if he doesn't want to get clean, then what can anyone else really do?"

Mike Inez has the best bassist resume ever: Ozzy, Heart, Alice in Chains. He belongs in the Hall of Fame just for that. Layne is truly one of the best vocalists in contemporary music history. Not just because of his talent, not just because of his presence, not just because of his originality, but also because he inspired a whole generation of singers. There are SO MANY Layne copycats in rock right now (and they all fall so short of the man, of course -- William DuVall perhaps comes the closest to pulling off that style, but he has his own thing going, too).

Tbf they are all much more reserved in the post Layne era. Seems with all they’ve been through some of their humor and outgoing fuckin around behavior died along the way. Been 16yrs since this interview tho and all 3 of these guys are still doing well which brings me a lot of joy

Sean Kinney is a versatile and perceptive drummer, and he brought color to the rhythm of Alice in Chains; Sean Kinney helped define the sound of this band. I can't help to notice that he may be left out in a small way in this video. The pain of Layne passing is heavy on him, heavy on his heart, and he doesn't take it lightly to the point that he can make casual commentary. I think it's important to remember Layne, but we shouldn't forget the people who have been there with his legacy.
Maybe Sean is more introspective under these circumstances. He seems quite happy to take more of a back seat - at least I hope that's the case. He is a brilliant drummer and definitely adds magic to AIC's music.
Yeah he is by far one of the best, possibly the best of the 90’s. Underrated
MistakenForDead1 and yeah I think Sean was actually the closest to Layne in the end, other than Mike Starr. Jerry seemed to hold more resentment and anger, but according to Sean he attempted to see and talk to Layne pretty frequently, only to be turned away every time.. pretty sad to think about.
@@booognish I agree. After reading the (somewhat) recent biography, I think Sean took losing Layne very, very hard. I think Jerry did as well, but he puts his profession first. That isn't necessarily bad, I just think that Jerry deals with things differently because of his work ethic. I think they all truly loved Layne, as we all do. We all grieve differently.
Sean was absolutely a major part of the success of AIC. Awesome drummer. I envy him.

This may sound crazy, but I find comfort knowing I'm not the only one who was completely devastated by Laynes death. Didn't know him.....I know none of you..... yet here we are all, feeling the same loss because of the impact Layne had on us one way or another. I'm 53.... been with AIC from the door.... this music has gotten me through some really difficult dark times in my life, and to this day continues to do so.... if I sound selfish, so be it, but in all actuality I'm extremely thankful and blessed.

I'm 54 and feel the same. Lane Staley and his music has literally saved me on more occasions than I can count. Maybe not from drug addiction but from other pain that comes with life. I feel a connection with a stranger and his vocals and lyrics and his pain. I also feel comfort and a not so alone knowing others feel the same.

There is a time when you love an addict that you realize that they have chosen not to get better. Its sad but its the truth. Overdoses are horrible and painful but when you see a loved one make the choice to die from addiction, its one of the hardest things you can experience in life. These guys did their grieving well before Layne passed. Having been off heroin for 8 years myself, choosing to live has put Layne's decision to leave us into a very real perspective. I will honor Laynes memory by living and sharing his music with as many young people as I can. I will also always help another addict if they ask for help. Always.
spoken like only someone who knows can - been there myself - I always remember it in the eyes - they are there but they are not really there anymore - and they know it - and you know and you hope like hell that you are wrong - but it is going to win at that point - it is the worst thing to witness but it happens all the time
I did grieve my daughter before she was gone. But I still had hope for her. It’s a hard thing to watch someone you love battle this. It’s harder when they do pass. No more hope. The never ending did I do enough, what if this or that. I do believe they want to get better and just don’t know how. Eventually fighting that demon wears them down. Especially he lost his fiancé probably didn’t help. My daughter did great for years was clean then a relapse killed my beautiful girl. Fentanyl laced drugs are killing around 300 people a day. I realize this isn’t what happened to Layne. With him I think his soul was tired but that’s just a guess. Much luv to him & AIC
The day the news hit that he was gone I called in work, cried, and went to rehab 4 days later. Clean ever since. Thank you Suboxone.

I have tears watching this and how they honored and spoke about Layne. As also a huge STP fan, it's sad to see them talk so badly about Scott pre and post death. Then we have AIC that speak so much love about Layne. I personally am not a fan of AIC without Layne, but I admire how they have handled themselves after losing Layne. STP could really learn something from these guys.

Scott was a clown junkie who had many chances to right the ship and imploded 2 bands. Layne never recovered from his fiancé’s death. There is a difference.

The day they announced that Layne had passed away i cried and to honor him i listened to all there albums. But I'm glad that Alice In Chains had gotten back together and William is a great addition to the band.
Love all the music that they continue to make and there newest album Rainier Fog is just amazing. I'd like to think that Layne would be proud that AIC is making music.
Knowing Layne he 100% would’ve been proud of the band, I think it would’ve made him sad if AIC died with him for good. I think Layne would be more proud of them than pretty much anyone
I had the chance to meet Mike Inez a while back when I was doing security at a club & he was one of the nicest, pleasant, kind people I'd ever met. AIC wasn't playing there that night but at another place the next day.

I personally don't want to see any of them cry an be sad an break the f down..but you can hear it in all their songs.
Layne met Jerry one or two times, gave him (a perfect stranger) a place to live, a job at the Music Bank, Layne got him guitars and gear, encouraged him to sing more than just back up, the harmonizing they did together, set Jerry up with a life (I think if it wasn't for Layne, Jerry would have made it to where he is but it would have been harder to get there).
Jerry always says the nicest things about Layne when he's asked about him, you can truly tell Layne meant a lot to Jerry.
Cantrell is such a thoughtful guy. its not easy to talk about something so personal, and he does it with such grace and humility. grieving is hard enough in private, and to have to do it publicly has to be enormously difficult. rock on, guys, and RIP Staley and Mike Starr…🤟🏿🎸

When you love an addict..you always have that pit in your stomach that you know this is going to happen…it’s just a matter of time. When an addict truly gives up, it breaks your heart then. So the grieving starts then. As someone who lost the love of my life on my birthday of all days…he lost his soul, long before his body.
I like to say that Mike Inez is truly a nice guy. Met him a couple of times and he was always just so pleasant and friendly.

I remember waking up and hearing the news about Layne on the radio. It was raining that morning, and my thoughts went right to Rain When I Die. His passing really hit me hard, and I didn't have the chance to know the man like the AIC family did. Reminds me of how it felt when Stan Lee died, these guys art & creation were such a big part of my teens, in terms of their music being there for me (and many others). Even though we didn't know him on a personal level, it was still a very personal loss. He'll live forever through the music. RIP Layne.

Saw KoRn with AiC last week. William is amazing and I wish I had given him a chance earlier. Since Layne passed, I didn’t have an interest in AiC anymore, but they killed it.

Man, imagine the pain talking about the death of your best bud through addiction. I think we've all been there, just these guys created some great music along the way. What a journey.
My son lost his life to a drug overdose he was 32. So when you convey how they must feel... It's instantaneous grief. Right back to square one. I did everything humanly possible to save my son. Unfortunately the financial resources were not available. So everyday I live with guilt and sadness.
It's been since 4/15/14 and it does not get better.
this is so difficult to watch. not as difficult as watching AiC Unplugged, but layne's demise is probably one of the saddest in rock history. rip layne, you were my favorite rock singer of all time. the scene will never be the same...
One thing that shows how much they loved the guy is how they kept Layne in the band for years. They couldn’t do any major tours because of the addiction. Costing everyone millions if not billions (30 years of compounded interest) and I haven’t heard a single member of AIC mention that once in all these years.
Trying to choke back the tears watching this. The respect shown just speaks of how much Layne was loved and is missed. He was a beautiful, funny, caring soul.

I saw Jerry in concert in Ft Myers, Florida two days after Layne died. It was crazy! One of the opening bands played "Nutshell" which was amazing.

They all seem to genuinely love each other and Layne. It seems so uncommon to see that now with most bands.
Layne lives on forever through Alice.
People who make it through tuff times are able to continue to write the story. People come and go throughout a lifetime but when Layne's work on earth was done, heaven called him home. Layne's songwriting on earth was dark and depressing, because he didn't like Earthly living, but the songs where still incredible. Just imagine what Layne's songwriting being in heaven is like.........damn I bet the songs are spectacular and with so much to write about too!
Jerry Cantrell is such an articulate smart man. Very poised and composed. We all miss Layne
If there's a kinder, more genuine soul than Mike Inez, I'd like to meet them. Always felt he kind of got the short end of the stick when he came on board....they were at the Apex of their career....and then things just got weird.

Fact he was lookn for a fan,Again..he posted a Gnarly shot that says it all.. he plopped down with guitar and was practically falling off the stage to hug and hold this lady in the audience.
And he was lookn for her cuz he just wanted to simply Thank Her😇♡
Pinfield always does great interviews. He has the giddiness of a fan which I think helps the artist appreciate his questions and feel comfortable in expanding on their answers. His jittery hands and rocking back and forth reminds me of Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney.

Hard to believe it’s been so long. Layne and his music saved my life from addiction and depression. Even though he’s never coming back his music will touch my soul until the end of my days
Fell in love with Alice in Chains when i was 12, i got Jar of Flies on tape from a friend... listened to it on my walkman on my paper route.... over and over and over.....everyday
It still really hits that nerve for Jerry. Layne was such a beautiful soul. Such a devastating loss. Witnessing his downward spiral was heartbreaking. Sleep tight, Layne.
I like the way Jerry worded things. He stated that it happened to him too, and I understood that to mean that even though his fight wasn’t with Dope, it was with alcohol, and each person has their own different fight with different intoxicants and chemicals, and he made it sound very real which it is, and how none of us are too strong to be able to fight it, without help. I don’t know. It just really resonated with me. Layne is and always will be my favorite singer of all time. I mean shit,I’m 36 years old and I have a poster of him on my wall.
I was fortunate enough to take a trip to Seattle this July, and got to see his old condo, and walk to the bar that he used to frequent and nod out in… Ironically, the first restaurant I went to in Seattle, Tommy vext was sitting at the next table and. I got to meet him and get a picture with him. ( He’s the one that offered to take the picture, I was just going to ask for his autograph. Tommy is the most real and down-to-earth, fan-loving man. I respect the fuck out of him.) It was a surreal trip. I plan to move to Seattle soon. To me, Seattle is the promised land. I am a grunge and music freak/junkie
