Down in a hole
Feelin' so small
Down in a hole
Losin' my soul
I'd like to fly
But my wings have been so denied

The vocal harmony between Layne and Jerry is really out of this world
It really was one of the true beauties in this world.
So otherworldly!
perfectly described.
It’s incredible. Never heard anything like it before and don’t know that I ever will.
It is absolutely insane. Especially in this song, it is magnificent. The way they take each other over and add each other.. Wow!
A heroin addict knowing he's in too deep and his fate is sealed, sitting here singing the song of his life with three of his strongest believers playing by his side, all 4 clearly connected in the moment. Easily one of the most powerful performances you'll ever see in this lifetime, or any other
Eloquently put
Wow. I was thinking the same. He was hurting so badly.
... Well said. Tragic topic but beautiful song lyrically & musically ...
beautifully put. kills me man..
If that's how he felt on this unplugged show, imagine what he felt when his fiancee died a few months later...

You know the band is legendary when you prefer the unplugged session over the studio recordings
My go to 💯
FACTS
Same with Nirvana and STP
If only Soundgarden performed Unplugged
You know you are gentrified and pedestrian when you prefer mellow acoustic to imaginative, powerful, and subversive rock.
For example Over Now studio record is better than the unplugged session. Some are better in studio.
@@j.c7719 do you just use words without thinking about them? It’s not superior. Laynes voice had deteriorated by this point and the band is shambolic and sloppy.
Layne and Jerry's vocals harmonising together is just incredible.
Honestly phenomenal!
Everything about this performance is just lightning in a bottle. I'm thankful it was filmed for future generations to enjoy.
totally agree spot on!
Shame they will never be the band they once were with Layne Staley
Their voices together are my favorite so good
I was a heroin addict for six years. This song hits deep for me. Homeless, a hooker, jail, the whole deal. I know the feeling of just wishing you could just be inside of someone else. I lived it every day for six years. Been clean 15 years now. I get it. Poor Layne.
I was one for 27 years, imagine what that does to a person. Gratefully I am now clean 6 1/2 years. Seeing Layne this way breaks my heart. I know that pain all too well. It's even sadder he couldn't find his way out.
Great job getting set free from that life. I think we all deal with stuff on different levels. I can't grasp everything he is singing about addiction but I understand it from an outsider looking in. Ive had friends and family that were addicted.
God bless 🙏
🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
🙏❤
15 years ago i thought my funeral was coming soon. I have a wife and two kids now and this song takes me back and makes me so grateful i survived. Friends dont let friends do heroin.
Not even once
What are you talking about? I don't understand what you are saying. I am not a drug addiction. But just common sense tells you that once you try a drug you will get hooked. I just like rock music especially Alice in Chains. I am not an addict just a lover of good music
Exactly. I had years of hatred for my whole family, I just wanted to be left alone to do heroin but they never gave up and dragged me out of my heroin addiction after many, many failures. I ve been clean nearly 30 years now and i still owe each of them a debt i can never fully repay but even now, each day clean , chips a bit off.

No one could ever compare to the legendary Layne Staley. The emotion in his voice is unlike any other. My dad and I listened to Alice In Chains all the time together, it was one of our bonds. I always wished we could have saw him live, although I was still pretty young when Layne died. After losing my dad to cancer a few years ago, I sure hope he is up there with Layne getting the concert he always wanted! ❤🕊️
Same bond with My Pops who also died in 2016 of Cancer much Love Layne.. 😢
Fuck Cancer I hate that pestilence on this earth that took my father too 😢

The way Layne and Jerry harmonize "fly" together just gives me goosebumps.🤘🏻
Never any better.............
He never lost it.
No matter how high, how sick...
The look on Jerry's face was pure respect and love for his troubled brother.
This comment is pure only few even understand... addiction is not a joke depression is not a joke

“One can save millions, but sometimes, millions can’t save one” RIP LEGEND
@Sunsworn get off the cross, we need the wood...
Jerry should be mentioned too tho, it wasn’t just 1 when it came to their music, this is Jerry’s song and most of their most famous and relatable lyrics are written by him too. Both Jerry and Layne helped a lot of people but for some reason Layne always gets all the credit for it even if Jerry was writing the whole song and lyrics. Both of them were some of the best and most relatable lyricists ever. Sad that no amount of people or help was able to save Layne tho, he was past the point of wanting help, tragic story. Definitely a legend tho.

Never thought that the sound of a dying man would be this powerful. R.I.P. Layne. 🤘🏻
A lot of misnomers out there about this song and performance. The lyrics are about Jerry and his girlfriend's relationship and Layne didn't die for another 6 years after this.
exactly.....ty this guy literaly had to read the lyrics off the stand so sad....
So sad seemed he knew how it was gonna end for him what is it with lead singers they all seem like tormented souls , such beauty comes from pain and suffering , ugh .....RIP to all of the greats we lost .
Layne’s performance during this unplugged session was haunting. Closed eyes, minimal movement, head down, and, at the same time, most powerful and sorrowful vocals.
“Perfection” is the only word to describe the performance of this song.
What a struggle it must have been
Não nego 😳😳
Muito bom mesmo grande amigo

Isn't its weird that Grunge bands had the best unplugged sessions
They were the most rawly talented mainstream musicians at the time

Its not weird it wow
The weird thing is why they all died? Except Eddie he is alive. ;)
Not at all
Down in a hole is one of the very few songs that I feel right down deep in my bones. Amazing song by an even more Phenomenal Vocalist.
This one’s Jerry’s, he wrote it after coming out of a long term relationship. The lyrics totally matches Layne’s addiction though. Incredible song
Layne was legitimately singing his own eulogy here. One of the last times he was seen in public, let alone performed. RIP to arguably one of, if not, the greatest male vocalist to exist.
How effortless Layne’s voice is. But he and Jerry together here is pure heaven. Both are amazing
I agree. There voices were made to go together. And lanes growly voice is one in a million 🤟🎶🎶🎶🎶
They fit perfectly
Agree....its so hauntingly beutiful in its entire melancholy madness...
You took the words out of my mouth. Looks Effortless.
I think that's what has always made AIC stand out to me when compared to their contemporaries, the harmonization between Layne and Jerry. Their voices were so different from one another, yet they always sounded amazing together.
I don’t EVER comment on things, but this particular video is so special to me. When I was a little girl, my mom raised me on 90’s “grunge”. I have so many special memories of Saturday mornings at home, windows open, with Alice In Chains blaring as my parents cleaned the house. Life took an ugly turn not too long after that. When I was young adult, my mom and I became extremely close. She was my absolute best friend in the world. I lost her to cancer in the summer of 2017. Now that I’m around the age she was when she listened to this music, it hits me on such a different level. I became obsessed with Layne and started researching his entire life and career. I can now understand. I feel the same pain and drive that she did through his voice, over 20 years later. It makes me feel like she’s still here... telling me she understands and it’s okay. So grateful for AIC, and this live session.
If you haven't already done so, pick up a copy of David DeSola's book, "AiC, The Untold Story", it's a very good read and follows Laynes life well. Sorry for your loss, the pain you're feeling is the love you have shining through. God bless.
wish you best of luck megan
Powerful ♥️
You're beautiful, bless your life🤘🏼💘
my heart goes out to you Megan. I understand exactly what you mean by the song making you feel connected to your Mum. I lost my best friend Jenny in April 2018 and I remember she put this song on a mixed CD for me back in the late 90's.. now when i listen I understand her connection to this song and I feel close to her. Obviously your Mum and my BFF had the best taste in music :-)
Makes me want to sob like a child so damn sad it hurts me deep down somewhere I can’t even reach
I can’t even wrap my head around just how good Layne Stayley was. It’s mind boggling 🤯
Someone said this was the closest you'll get to seeing someone sing at their own funeral and I was like Damn
Same with Elvis's last show
That slammed me. Such a deep statement that formed a mental picture that literally took my breath.
Same with Kurt on the Nirvana session…
Damn,,, Layne was the best !!!
@@degensanonymous Yeah, not with how Kurt looked, but how it was arranged. Layne looked like he was ready for the casket here. Dam shame he just couldn't get clean no matter what they did. He just wouldn't stop
Layne and Jerry were just meant to be together. I've never heard two voices merge so beautifully and effortlessly.
totally aye. Def having a A.I.C resurgence here.

Eagles had probably the best harmony as a band, they all sang and did it so well together, even though they didn't get along. Other than that, I agree
Harmony? Voices? Way back... Beach Boys, before that, The Everly Brothers.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING 😉
Laynes voice is so haunting in this .. there is a deep suffering in the tone , so much raw emotion and feeling , it's like a hes whaling.. crying out for help .. by far the best mtv unplugged session ever.. R.I.P layne legend's never die
Can we bring this back? This music? This feeling? This vibe. The world needs more of this.
That nod of approval from Jerry at 2:16 is everything! It's almost like you can see him giving the band this look of "see, I told you he was gonna kill it!" RIP Layne 🙏🙏
Greatest live performance in the history of music.
I also see it as him having a glimmer of hope his friend could be saved .
Feelin it to this day brothers and sisters
@@910rick Sad but true.
And Layne delivered
That haunting voice; one of the most unique voices able to convey darkness, depression, despair, torment. Heartbreaking.
So true. It's so rare to see that honest tortured soul tone come through.. Jonathan Davies of Korn (early Korn) had it, the guys in Dark New Day captured it briefly with the song Brother I think, Anathema have done it in multiple songs, and it comes through in Antimatter's stuff too. Grabs you by the heart every time.
Great comment, agree completely
I feel the same
It’s the drugs, everything else is a bi-product of the addiction.
Jerry’s voice is so damn good. The lines he sings are so under appreciated. He could have been a singer in a lot of great bands on his own.
This is beyond heartbreaking
Man I wish they did acoustic performances like this in Layne’s healthy prime. Even as strung out as he was and appears to be missing a bunch of teeth, his voice still hits me like it always did. Truly heart breaking that nobody could help him. As an ex-addict myself, I can understand exactly the hole that he was in. RIP Layne, you’ll never be forgotten!
With the money he had, implants would have been a viable option. Herion/Depression got his soul!! Alas
Poetic souls have a way of expressing hell with beauty.
Love the saying
Fuck
You damn right
You're a Poetic Soul.
That's the most beautiful thing I've read today
Wow! What a way to describe this magic
Layne and Jerry harmonizing the Chorus is heaven
They are both incredibly talented. Jerry is singing so good and the harmonizing is really something else
harmonizing *anything*
Sure is, was just thinking I hope I can hear him sing in the Heavens.
they sang about hell but sounded like heaven.. god damn.
They both were amazing musicians and their Harmony together is like no other band. I'm sure they could about anything and still be amazing
Hands down the BEST MTV unplugged of alltime
When MTV was music TV...
Cantrell has an amazing way with words and music. This song was originally written by Jerry after the end of his 7-year relationship and the helplessness he felt at the time. But when sung by Layne it transcends its original intent to mirror Layne's own struggles with addiction. This song is a masterpiece.
I agree, this song transcends directly to Layne's struggle, jerry's head shake after the first chorus proves that. with a huge smile on his face, he knows this song portays pain. And who better to sing this song with conviction, than Mr Layne Staley, who seems choked up with the lyrics. Brings on a totally new feel that this song has nothing to do with Jerry's past relationships, but laynes everyday struggle.
Jake Kology well spoken my friend.
Layne gave up after Demri died. Even though she had already broke up with him, he paid for her heart surgery. She continued to use, and died. He was heartbroken and I really believe he died when she died.
Goddamn right its a masterpiece.
Indeed. I always find myself reminiscing of simpler times listening to this. It's like the scent of something that instantly takes you back to a particular place. Damn, if only Lane was here to finish living his dreams.
Jerry's nod of approval when Layne hits those notes still brings tears to eyes.
this!
Absolutely!!!!
He sang the wrong line
@@aspjake123 he did twice yes. it had been a very long time.

Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers in a tomb, in bloom
[Verse 1: Layne Staley]
Down in a hole and I don't know if I can be saved
See my heart, I decorate it like a grave
You don't understand who they thought I was supposed to be
Look at me now, a man who won't let himself be
[Chorus: Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell]
Down in a hole
Losin my soul
Down in a hole
Losin' control
I'd like to fly
But my wings have been so denied
[Verse 2: Layne]
Down in a hole and they've put all the stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue has been burned of thе taste
I have been guilty of kicking myself in thе teeth
I will speak no more of my feelings beneath

It's literally the soundtrack of my youth. This album and Nirvana unplugged I would play over and over. And over. It's not one bad song. As a young teenager in the 90's the pain in their voice summaried how I was feeling. I struggled with opiate addiction, and these 2 helped me through. I just wish they were still with us R.I.P.
It seems all my favorite bands either overdosed or commit suicide. I miss them so much. It gets better. If no one has told you I give a shit about you. I do. I'm still struggling with my own demons. Growing up, I lived my life knowing I wouldn't live past 30 years. Now he I am 45 still going. Can't say I'm genuinely happy, but it's better then being dead. Stay strong. And everyone. EVERYONE CAN CHANGE. Have a good night, my brothers.

No one talks about the incredible camera work here. The way the camera goes in and out of focus when Layne and jerry are singing just shows the emotions and when Layne belts out that first down in a hole the way the camera zooms in on him just adds another haunting vibe to this whole performance. Great work by MTV . God how did we go from this to practically brain dead content
it was the last of the best..
.
Somewhere out there another cut/edit of the session exist.(Though it will probably never see the light of day )
Two weeks following the show, the band was sent a first cut to review and Layne wasn’t happy. He got producer, Toby Wright to watch the unplugged set from start to finish. Layne thought MTV had edited the whole performance in the worst possible light to make Layne look bad, Coletti would take the notes back from Alice in Chains and re-edit the performance and finally get Layne’s approval.
Well we have NPR Tiny Desk series
Originally its said that MTV had tried to edit it to paint Layne in a bad light but the band and Layne specifically wouldnt sign off on it till it was fixed...took a couple months too..
Yeah, nobody talks about.. euh... things. You know... things.
The first verse is soooo powerful, Layne knew. Jerry and Layne's harmony is just transcendent.

The way Jerry looks at the band and smiles when Layne hits that high note... It is said that, apart from Cantrell, the rest of the band was doubting Layne's ability to perform that night. It's the "I told he could do it." look.

Wow
On science 😬 (i'm not atheist i swear)
Yes Bro SO TRUE, now more than then. Fo Sho
That is spot on!
Bruh I got broken when last Night I was depressed and listened to the lyrics of vicinity of obscenity by soad
Omg I totally love how Jerry looks back and smiles at the others as Layne is singing one of his epic high notes 2:16. It just gave me chills. Epic
This moment is pure gold
He's not doing for a good reason. In his mind he's like "he nailed it" however ALL of them wanted Layne to beat it.
Jerry loved Layne so much. I can't believe what he went through practically watching his friend kill himself.
He did this because others in the band didn’t think Layne could pull off the performance.
He mentioned this in an interview.
I will always love this moment. I love the chemistry they had between each other. I know he misses Layne. I know I do so much.
Layne is one of my hero’s, this song has helped me through some real tough spots
"I'd like to fly.. but my wings have been so denied" - I feel that in my bones.
Simple music can make you sing, a simple hug can make you feel, better, simple things can make you happy, I hope my simple hello will put a smile on your face..😊
Hello!!! How are you doing today, please
pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I
just wanted to know if you're a fan ? Have a
great day.. Stay Safe 🙏
A hug to you and I hope this song hits you deep like it does to all of us - amazing things happen in this world all the time. This is one of them, you found it and there's a whole lot more. Keep looking!
Fuck yes!! Same
Oh wow I always thought it was “my wings are BENT so denied”. Learned something new today. I thought he was saying he’s physically broken so he can’t live the life he wants.
All these years, I always thought it was, “but my wings have been sold, and I”. What a song either way.
Hope you are well.
This song kept playing in my head when I was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer in June of 2018. With complete faith in my medical team, God, and his will for me, I have been in remission since October of last year.
Tom Mason I’m so glad to hear you got through it, and I’m wishing you all the best. Amazing taste, btw!
Stay in good health ! praying for you brotha
Good luck my friend. They diagnosed me with mgus. Then 2 docs thought mm. I felt like I was on borrowed time and scared shitless but when this covid shit hit and I lost two much younger friends, one to liver cancer and one during pregnancy then it put things into perspective. For some reason I felt like I've been on deathwatch waiting for the other hammer to fall and I just grew tired of it. I don't know if there is a God or not but spending time with my 3 yr old makes me feel like there's something to all this spiritual maybe not religious. Peace to you brother. Ramblings of a guy turning 50 soon...maybe.
@@nicolapole9491 thank you, we must never give up, life is too good!
@@tmanmatt213 Thank you brother!
Goodness! I'm stunned at the power and depth of this music. Listening to AIC is one of the best finds - a revelation.
The Man barely, ever opened his mouth. Vocal Beast. Naturally came out. Too easy. If you're trying, might not be Your destiny.
True
This era is unmatched, everything seemed to be better back then.
Music, movies, people, everything.
This was Pop music in good days.
This was real life.
It was
Unmatched music
This was my teenage to early 20s era. Everything was definitely better back then. EVERYTHING !!
Jerry Cantrell harmonizes with Laynes in such a unique way. They complement each other so well, yet together they have such a powerful, somber, and eerie melody. The sheer odds of them both forming a band and being so perfect for each other are astronomical. That's why I feel so blessed to have grown up with AIC.
This version of Down in a Hole is better than the album version. Their harmonies are soul crushing. No one will ever be able to sing like Layne.
Layne is the soul of AIC and Jerry is the body that's my definition of AIC.
This truly was the moment in history where Layne became Heisenberg. Bravo Vince.
Harmony is Everything
it's masterful. you can see Layne truly enjoying Jerry's singing. this is stuff of the rock gods. it gets me.
One of the absolute best of the Unplugged series... and one of the best rock vocalists of all time.
No joke. Who has EVER been this clean live?
He he, na’ robo!! She lu che l’è’ net, me sho la first lady!!
When it came to emotional depth, Layne knew no boundaries.
Songs like this which others may find sad, I find comforting.
R. I. P Layne.
You are never forgotten.
Jerry wrote the song and Layne truly lived it Jerry wrote it about a girl in his adolescence sounds like it is coming from Layne’s soul and sounds so relatable to his life
@@anniemirra7810 Interesting how real+fake= a great chemistry in a band. Not calling Jerry fake but you get what I mean. Firsthand experience vs observer
Depressing music is medicine. Period
When I’m feeling my saddest and lowest, these songs are the ones that give me the greatest comfort
Never has been a vocalist that touched my soul quite like Layne
Layne wanted Jerry to sing this because it was Jerry's song and he felt like he should. That's why they switched vocal positions in the last verse, and Layne stops singing. Layne wanted him to have some spotlight. Layne loved Jerry's voice.
And Jerry loved Laynes voice 2:15
the best part of the whole video is where Layne stops singing for a moment and gives Jerry this small proud smile
I noticed that as well and thought it was incredibly touching.
Layne said in the interview once that jerry is one of the coolest person he ever met
They both have such awesome voices when put together or separate it's like magic to me and something that is not easily replicated. I am glad that Jerry did sing quite a bit with Layne anyway because a lot of the music really after Layne's passing still sounds just like Alice in Chains because of Jerry Cantrell
The sheer joy on Jerry's face hearing layne sing is amazing
My dad just passed yesterday - "I'd like to fly, but my wings have been so denied" Even 12 years after addiction, this takes on a whole new meaning. In my later years, Ive said thats getting older. You hear your music differently....
The look Jerry gives around 2:16 is that of...
"We're f*ckin firing on all cylinders right now, eh?"
The excitement one only sees when he knows it will be one of the last.
So beautiful and pure. Just as that look Jerry gives to Layne at 2:53.. Jerry still in awe of Layne’s voice.
Seeing talking thrones in this feed honestly just made my day. I love the channel and his videos and definitely love GoT and seeing how he listens to AiC is just epic. But yea they were definitely firing on all cylinders.
I saw it as, “we’re back” . . . too bad that wasn’t the case.
Layne has a few smiles in this song too
Something went wrong in this world when mtv teen mom became more important than aic, pj, and nirvana unplugged
Illuminati did it again by destroying MTV and turning it into a reality-based douchebag channel...@Tilidin Berlinov
Tilidin Berlinov Jiffy Lube MTV lost its respect a long time ago they used to be good and it would play great music especially unplugged but now there's not even a thought to go to MTV it sucks
Its called the FCC
They don’t even have beavis and butthead on anymore :(
Eaverything went to the cock today, that's Howe we sad it in my country
They just don't make music like this anymore. One of a kind and second to none. Unforgettable moment in music history.
I’m a recovering heroin addict and I don’t wish that stuff and all that comes with it on my worst enemy. Having said that, I believe that all the pain, suffering and torment that comes with being an addict is precisely why their music is so powerful and felt so deeply the way it is. I don’t like to admit it, but my battle with addiction has taught me so much.
Congratulations! I’m happy for you! Keep being strong 💪🏻
It’s not about how many times you hit a bump in the road. What matters is you reach the destination. Even if the car only has one wheel left. So long as you reach the finish line
Listen to this everyday. What a beautiful harmonies they created.
This and don't follow been listening to them errday
I have been obsessed with this song and all AIC last few months...I didn't get hooked up them as a teenager yet here I am now HOOKED.
I have..be careful with it.though
Everyday when I wake up i listen to this
Every single day ❣️
In my opinion best grunge band ever
100% the best!
Agreed
Definitely had the best grunge vocalist and guitarist. Possibly drummer even. Fuck maybe you're right
this was by far the best band to come out of the seattle grunge area. everything this band had to offer from harmonies to playing was unmatchable. long live layne
Nirvana are only bigger because Kurt died earlier.
no other band can ever compare. pure emotion.
Keep in mind they hadn’t played together live for two years or something and they managed to put on one of the most memorable performances ever.
yes but they also had to stop and restart certain songs a couple times. this being one of them still great regardless
two they said that layne was very self concious of his teeth, and other things and thought the first edit made him look bad so they edit more … so who knows what was truly the best vocal performance out of them .
@@jayde-mariesimpson4555 if you listen to his bandmates talk about this performance they talk about constantly having to restart songs because Layne didn't remember the words. theres also a rumor he had a throw up bucket next to him because he was so sick from addiction at this point
@@DancePartyBlammosupposedly he was sick from withdrawals before the show, and someone ran out and scored some heroin for him.
@@DancePartyBlammo Jerry had the bucket, possibly because of acute food poisoning
Layne was a shell of himself and still absolutely killed this entire show. RIP Layne. Always getting me through hard times
Damn right!❤ 100%
On mad season que wanted to make a shell for all to see... On rivers of deceive.
This performance and the nirvana one are what legends are made of!
Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone...it all starts there
Yep. this song has literally helped me stay alive several times.
Seeing this again after so many years broke me down for all the people I have lost over the past few years. The 90s were a wonderful time in my life that I scarcely appreciated because I thought those days (and my youth) inexhaustible. They weren't and my youth wasn't either. Take a moment to be present, if you are lucky enough to be young and still have all of your friends, because, one day, you won't have either.
This gave me chills to read. I wasted 10 plus years of my life on that shit. So grateful to be clean and it makes me sad to know the ones that didn’t make it out alive. Such a beautiful soul and talent.
Real music like this hurts your heart, not your ears......
So true, my friend...😤
Thnx man
Amen rolls j.d, amen to that.
Absolutely agree
Thank you everyone, I have never had so much likes
This is without a doubt, one of the best live performances of a song in history. Everyone was on 110%. Fucking haunting tho.
Agreed, amazing performance. Blew me away hearing it the first time and still does.
🤘
@Mark Green you do know the backstory of this performance right?
Fucking Oath ! Amen!!!
Its very haunting indeed nice bring up
