I saw them in St. Louis opening for KISS around the same time and I couldn't believe how great they were. He was spot on that night. Had no idea he was in so much trouble. RIP.
I was there and had no clue this would be his last show, ever. I also heard he OD'd a couple of hrs after the show and was taken to a KC emergency room where he eventually recovered and made it home. Layne performed all his shows like this, leaning into the mic stand but what struck me and others was when their set was done, he literally walked off stage like an old man. He was over 6ft, but he moved like a dude in his 80's, obviously he was doped up during the show and amazingly his natural voice killed it, even his screams were on key despite being wasted. Great show, incredibly tight and kick ass sound... and very sad too.
He is surprisingly solid and on for how far gone he was. Imagine what could have been. They had another Dirt left in them. Rest in peace Layne. I wish you had gotten the help that you needed.
@@cristobilllumberg2473 All of grunge/90's singers were really talented and really versatile. I don't believe Eddie was a better singer than Layne, technically speaking. Chris Cornell was a better voice hands down, but Layne's kraft, specifically with his story behind every note he hit made him truely one of the most unique figure of instrumental music ever!

Layne, the one and only, never can be replaced and never be forgotten! And I love what he does with his voice on this AIC classic song. Ahhhhhhhh missing you so much Layne!!!!
I still think Layne sounds great. and I love the support that Jerry shows him.. even during this concert when Layne wasnt feeling that great. .he was still amazing.. he was one of a kind and there arent too many singers that can even come close to his vocal range and control.. he sang from the depths of his soul.. you cant duplicate that..

Josh VanHuss no that's not true.. he was fine when he arrived in NYC..he was with his friend Randy Biro.. who was also an addict... Randy only had enough for himself.. so the "management" got some H for Layne and he only did enough so he wouldnt get sick and he didnt do alot so he wouldnt nod during the filming..they were there for hours and hours. and the final cut was edited... and Layne had the final say on what would be shown on the video.. hope that clear some things up..

He missed a hell of a lot of notes. It’s an insult to his talent to say he sounds good here when it isn’t. I don’t understand how most people are so ready to lie and lie to themselves. It’s pitiful.
@@tylurmackinnon6217 what do you gain from a backhanded insult against a dead man? People who love and respect him are praising him for bravely tackling one of his more strenuous songs to perform. @@tylurmackinnon6217 I'm not really an AIC fan at all much, but I mean, he *does* sound good here. You can certainly tell he wasn't anywhere near the top of his game, but you can also tell he put his all into it and still put on a good performance (or what little of it he had left by this point).
This whole performance just kills me. It's amazing but is full of feels, for lack of better expression. From that thumbs up to just the fact that Layne still could give an amazing performance in his final shows.
If you listen to this just after listening to him sing it live in the early 90's it's 10 times more heartbreaking... one of the best vocalists to ever perform being reduced to this is so sad. Better than most could do even at this stage of his fight with depression, but it still hurts to see him like this.
You can see how Layne was trying to put as much talent and emotion to that song (especially that it was the last song of that show). It's especially shown in the choruses.
Layne Staley was a amazing singer and artist, you could tell he was a troubled soul, but like most people, he hid it very well we've lost a legend may you rest in peace I love you layne staley
I feel kind of bad for loving this performance when it's basically the sound of a dying man, but like others have said, even at his worst Layne sounds fantastic. It breaks my heart knowing what he went thru, especially the night of this performance. Sleep well, sweet Layne. May you be free of the pain that plagued you here on Earth. You're loved so very much
Dude! That second chorus was killer. He definitely wasn’t doing badly here *at all* Honestly, by this point, he was just tired, sick and starting to get toward the end of what he had to give. What are you gonna do? The guy accomplished more in 30 years than some families do in several generations.
He was struggling technically, but masterfully turned that into his advantage by singing it differently while still maintaining a pitch that is compatible with the chords of the chorus.
I actually love the way he sounds here, it's one of my favorite vocal performances of Man in the Box. I like the way he changes up the chorus here--which was intentional, as he does the same thing in the other shows of the final tour. He's singing more in his throat here (a la Kurt Cobain) than he did when he was healthier, which yes strictly speaking isn't as technically proficient or sustainable, but it sounds more raw and aesthetically pleasing (at least for my taste). He's still got a lot of power. Much more interesting take on the chorus in this rendition, too.
Nothing to do with throat singing, he isnt straining like Cobain. Dont ever compare Layne to Cobain. Layne is using distortion techniques, Cobain did not have that amount of technique.
This is super powerful and emotionally stretched and strained. He really sounds tortured. This performance kicks ass, except when looking at how the story ends.
Layne did it like no one else did, or can now. He was iconic. Even at his worst, he was his best. The world lost him way before we should have. I feel that he had so much more to do and to give, but the beast took him from us. Like it has done and continues to do with so many of our talented artists and visionaries. RIP Layne, thanks for the music and the memories!😢
Even in his condition here, he could still break down fucking walls with his voice. That chorus change at 1:08 is phenomenal. I only discovered AIC about 2 years ago, as I was only about 3 when Layne passed away and my family never really listened to this genre. By the time of his passing he had been out of the music scene for a long time too. Listening to him, I absolutely fell in love with his voice, his vibe, and his presence. We don’t have talent or music like that anymore. I know I was born in the wrong generation. Wish I could’ve been born earlier to see him in Seattle at the Moore in his prime. I’m stuck in a generation of SoundCloud rappers.
Cornell got a bit disappointing for awhile I think he never sang to his best ability with Audioslave but then again years had passed and age sometimes is a factor but yes he's another voice that did standout gonna go break out Bad motor Finger now
I think deep down due to all of his final interviews and almost prophetic statements about knowing he didn't have much longer he knew this was gonna be his last performance and that's why he sounds so haunted yet amazingly beautiful and soulful. My god we will never have another Layne. R.I.P bud. (Rock in Paradise)
It’s really amazing and also a bit sad to watch this performance right after the recording of Man in the Box from the Moore in 1990, where Layne’s voice still had a ton of power behind that characteristic rasp of his, but with that said, even this late in he still sounds much better than many acts could ever want to.
People always think Layne destroyed his voice by singing very abrasively but tbh I really think it was how he took care of himself off stage. One of my old music teachers was a huge fan and said he had surprisingly good voice control but also said how drugs will fuck up your voice. Even if you’re not a singer, I mean look at what smoking cigarettes does to your voice.
Much of his Dirt-era technique sounds very, very healthy. It wasn’t technique that destroyed him - a lot of his abrasiveness from Facelift up until Tripod is primarily a result of nasality and healthy distortion. It was that if your muscles atrophy and you body wastes away, so will all the mechanisms necessary for singing, as well as the energy. The performance here may not be healthy-sounding or quite like Layne in his prime, but it’s still an incredible effort from someone who was so, so nearly dead as he was here.
No one thinks that. It was 100% drugs. Can you imagine singing powerfully in a hot ass arena with a weak body and gurgly stomach, all kinds of gastrointestinal issues happening, possible liver problems, dry mouth, fatigue, muscle atrophy, malnutrition, nausea, headaches, brain fog and severe depression at your condition? We are all lucky Layne was still standing here at all. He OD right after the show. He was probably feeling like crap/death during this show but he still gave it everything. It's a travesty but he probably could've got his earlier voice back if he got the general state of health back in his overall body. He was 100% the best singer I've heard in my entire life. RIP Layne Staley. Thanks for sharing your gifts. 😢❤
seen this for a thousand times, just realized this is the closest that we (i was born 96) will ever get to Layne, this is an actual time machine. truly grateful for you posting this.
No matter how far into the void he slid, his voice stayed strong and powerful. So sad we lost this beautiful Soul but it's a privilege to have heard his Godlike sound
joe Costello couldn't have said it better!!! Not sure what any of the naysayers r talking about tbh, Layne single handedly switched up the ENTIRE song just my the melody in his vocals during this performance n it's freakin amazing if u ask me!! Even Jerry gives him a thumbs up!
I've been arguing with people the last few days about Chris Cornell's last show. They've been saying he sounded great and there was nothing wrong there and I'm like tha fuck??? It's obvious to me that something was wrong. He was always behind on the vocals and stumbling around. Here, however, I find myself in the opposite camp. I think Layne was amazing here, and as someone else says, there was a lot of improvisation which sounded great. I love this melody almost as much as the recording, especially after hearing this song 10,000,000 times since it came out when I was in high school. That's my feelings on it and just wanted to share it with all the other Layne Staley fans.
Everyone wants to fall back on GOD when they completely ignore his word and commandments. After this life is the Judgment. Now while you still have breath is the time to seek him and learn who he is.
Can you imagine how Layne felt when everyone was saying Cantrell was carrying him ? He proved he didn't need him and he knew it was their last show. Went out a star !

The thing about him OD'ing is true unfortunately :(
What was the date of this, do you recall exactly?
AsaphProject July 3rd 1996
Thx David for the info/short story. All the best from Denmark.
David Chezem where was this show?
The greatest rock vocalist of all time. Rest in peace, sweet prince.
A very much self made man,his crosses he bore made him the extramadare musician he was an still lives in my life....
Josh Pillault Yes right after the King Elvis Presley,of course.
@@EAP-TCB Are you stupid.
lol he is great but he's not even CLOSE to the best rock vocalist of all time. Ever heard of Freddy Mercury?
@@1023Endurance not even close
People say his voice was struggling and I’m still impressed by them.
He is surprisingly solid and on for how far gone he was. Imagine what could have been. They had another Dirt left in them.
Rest in peace Layne. I wish you had gotten the help that you needed.

Tell me this man wasn't giving all of his effort.
Best 90's singer.........fight me.
Besides, it sounded AMAZING. Truly AMAZING.
no that goes to eddie bedder and chris cornell
@@cristobilllumberg2473 All of grunge/90's singers were really talented and really versatile.
I don't believe Eddie was a better singer than Layne, technically speaking.
But I understand if you say Cornell
That man's range and power was insane, truly missed.
At the end of the day it's a matter of taste, I'm a fan of them all regardless of anything
@@cristobilllumberg2473 no
Best singer ever to me. He had a chameleon voice. He did funk, rock, jazz/swing.
Chris Cornell was a better voice hands down, but Layne's kraft, specifically with his story behind every note he hit made him truely one of the most unique figure of instrumental music ever!
Layne Staley once told Rolling Stone Magazine in 1996
"I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them... When I tried drugs, they were fucking great, and they worked for me for years, and now they're turned against me... and now I'm walking through hell, and this sucks."
Wow 😢
He didn't want to be a bad example...that's how loving he was
@@claudioinconis7616 I read in his interviews he didn't want his fans to think he was glorifying drugs. He said it hurt him when fans would see him out and tell him how wasted they were
@@s_shaddows.4939 I promise you all that passes, just keep at it. Cold turkey is great, the worse it is and you power through the better you will be and you build up tremendious amounts of will power that maybe you didnt have before. Appreciate the pain, it is what will change your life. Cold turkey is the only way to actually change your life...real talk.
@@s_shaddows.4939 I fought through a pill addication as well lots of oxy. It is a long crappy journey. You have to fight through everyday. it takes time but is worth it. All of the bandmates went to Laynes house or called 100's of times. Layne did rehab around 12 times I believe It just wasn't to be. You have to want it for yourself. Couldn't imagine the pain and suffering of Laynes family and friends through the dark years. He was rough in 96 at the unplugged shows I am sure he was miserable for the last 6 years. RIP to one of the greatest voices in Rock history.
Layne, the one and only, never can be replaced and never be forgotten! And I love what he does with his voice on this AIC classic song. Ahhhhhhhh missing you so much Layne!!!!
beauttifull . Leany the great, from chile¡¡
Man, that voice. No one has ever replaced this man's talent as of late. RIP Layne.
And all these years later, I still listen to Layne every day. Never forget x
I know I never said he sucked here. first I'd never say that about Layne.. I did say he didn't look well here,,and looked like he should have been at home resting...looks like he could barely stand..He still sounds great...Poor Layne!!! RIP and he's happy now Demri came to get him !! ♡♡RIP MIKE STARR♡♡
+Malika StaleyHoonBuckley It was reported that Layne overdosed before this show and paramedics revived him so that's why he didn't look so well...
+Tina Marie It did, thank you
+Tina Marie um..however, he DID od AFTER this performance
Man how I so miss Layne...he was a huge part of my teen years growing up. My fave band when I was in High School and still one of my all time fave's to this day. RIP beautiful soul, your voice and spirit resonates on and you will never be forgotten.
The way Layne adjusted his pitch(during the chorus) to match the chorus but still make use of his current state was top notch.
Amazing how good he was even while battling addiction. Legend
Layne is Legend
He is a god
He was essentially on his deathbed at this point, yet he didn’t miss a single note. What a legend.
@@gordonthefreeman I was about to say the same. He died on 2002 so I wouldn’t say deathbed but he was knocking on the door if anything.
Considering the condition he was in, he delivered a hauntingly intense performance and we all love it. We all miss him too. If you don’t, keep your self rightous musical elitist bs thoughts out of it- they don’t belong here. I guarantee you no one is giving you a gold star for thinking that.
@@tylurmackinnon6217 He asked to be saved and no one helped him. They just did what you're doing, and he's dead because of apathetic, judgemental pr**ks like you! 🤬
@@tylurmackinnon6217 I'm not really an AIC fan at all much, but I mean, he *does* sound good here. You can certainly tell he wasn't anywhere near the top of his game, but you can also tell he put his all into it and still put on a good performance (or what little of it he had left by this point).
Where would we all be if Layne hadn't decided to chase some crazy rockstar dream, he gave us his all and it cost him dearly.
Agreed.
Yes. Five years and six months later… mind blown!
You're loved so very much
His problem wasn't his voice, but because he couldn't pronounce words properly because he was missing a lot of teeth.
That actually sounded great lol man he was so diverse too his voice was still amazing there ❤ RIP
3:30 Unfortunately the last time we ever heard that insane voice.
Dude! That second chorus was killer. He definitely wasn’t doing badly here *at all*
Honestly, by this point, he was just tired, sick and starting to get toward the end of what he had to give. What are you gonna do? The guy accomplished more in 30 years than some families do in several generations.
He was struggling technically, but masterfully turned that into his advantage by singing it differently while still maintaining a pitch that is compatible with the chords of the chorus.
@@SungurEge 💯
The drugs never seemed to hurt his performance
no matter what his voice never faltered.
How long did you spend writing this?
This is super powerful and emotionally stretched and strained. He really sounds tortured. This performance kicks ass, except when looking at how the story ends.
Layne did it like no one else did, or can now. He was iconic. Even at his worst, he was his best. The world lost him way before we should have. I feel that he had so much more to do and to give, but the beast took him from us. Like it has done and continues to do with so many of our talented artists and visionaries. RIP Layne, thanks for the music and the memories!😢
The king of high notes. Rest easy Layne. My nephew named his son after Layne
You can tell he was pumped up during this, getting groovy with the stand like he used to, and belting out like never before. Very nice to see.
Such a loss... A one of a kind voice! He had so much more to offer. Tragic.
first time I ever seen this video and Layne sounds fuckin great
Wow layne sung his soul out here, giving the condition he was in here and the way he pulls it off is hauntingly beautiful as weird as it sounds.
This is the best sound quality that I’ve heard of this performance.
Layne was an incredible singer R.I.P. 🖤
Addiction is such a terrible and horrible way to go. Look what it did to one of the greatest bands that ever came out..
11 BRAVO AIC is still going strong and making great music
Hanson didn't have addiction problems.
11 BRAVO so true 😢😭
Layne was screaming these vocals echoing how he was inside. Haunting and beautiful
despite layne being in such bad health, his voice is as strong as ever here. Nothing can stop that voice from giving me chills
Oh man, right
First time that I don't see Staley shaking his head while singing this. So sad.
Any negative comments about his vocal performance on this are complete bullshit!... he is literally singimg his ass off
He was one of the main reasons I even wanted to be a singer. His vocals are so underrated. One of the greatest vocalist of all time..
Staley and Cobain , best voices of the nineties imo , they were really powerful and unique.
very true nothing better or even close
cornell was on there level too man...he could break glass
Cornell got a bit disappointing for awhile I think he never sang to his best ability with Audioslave but then again years had passed and age sometimes is a factor but yes he's another voice that did standout gonna go break out Bad motor Finger now
Stella ' Cornell was great ( as many ) on studio , he never accomplished performing live what he did on albums 😪😪😪
Caudal Chile this is so a sad thing to many singers and musicians.
I love the improvised chorus
I think deep down due to all of his final interviews and almost prophetic statements about knowing he didn't have much longer he knew this was gonna be his last performance and that's why he sounds so haunted yet amazingly beautiful and soulful. My god we will never have another Layne. R.I.P bud. (Rock in Paradise)
1:08 in love...
And now I'm sad. The last time the world ever heard those iconic chorus belts. They were beautiful too! Wish you were still here Layne!
Rip layne! Even though layne is no longer with us,his amazing voice and music will never die!
His voice never sounded bad love you Layne will never stop missing you thank you for sharing your beautiful voice.
It’s really amazing and also a bit sad to watch this performance right after the recording of Man in the Box from the Moore in 1990, where Layne’s voice still had a ton of power behind that characteristic rasp of his, but with that said, even this late in he still sounds much better than many acts could ever want to.
That guitar lick Jerry gave Layne at 2:25 to help him find his note.
LOL no it wasn't the song has a lick there
@@Rd61372 it does, but it's 110% not the one played here.
@@ilovetacos210 he altered it a lot. Layne would alter vocal melody too- they would just wing some of that stuff back then
Layne Staley had such a unique and awesome voice. Man that guy could really belt out the lyrics. I wish he was still with us.
Every time I listen to this it gets better and better
River of deceit is one of the greatest songs on this planet!
Maybe smoked like a chininea
Will always be a total loss to lose Layne, he had one of the best voices. Unique
One of my favorite front men ever. Rip
He is was sounding great for me... Love the melody changes in the chorus to mix it up..He was always on key too.. This guy was one the best for sure.
seen this for a thousand times, just realized this is the closest that we (i was born 96) will ever get to Layne, this is an actual time machine.
truly grateful for you posting this.
Even is his final days performing Layne Staley still sounding fuckin amazing!!! What a voice!!
God bless him, he gave it his all, what more can you ask for?
No matter how far into the void he slid, his voice stayed strong and powerful. So sad we lost this beautiful Soul but it's a privilege to have heard his Godlike sound
It's prob also the recordings that make layne's voice sound worse... cause they were amazing live. fucking awesome.
joe Costello couldn't have said it better!!! Not sure what any of the naysayers r talking about tbh, Layne single handedly switched up the ENTIRE song just my the melody in his vocals during this performance n it's freakin amazing if u ask me!! Even Jerry gives him a thumbs up!
jesus christ the chorus sounds infernal in this version
Couldn’t agree more
