      +Chelsey Mills I agree 100% by this time Layne was really deep in his depression and drugs. I believe Jerry is the one who kept pushing him to get out there and perform. It must have been very hard for Jerry to see this man who he wrote stellar songs with be reduced to this.

      the only reason why he lost some of the power in his voice is because he was dropping off his voice wich is damaging to the throat i really love layne tho hes one of the best singers ever

    • @runnersdialzero1244
      @runnersdialzero1244 3 роки тому +64

      He didn't layer his voice to hide anything, he did it because he liked the harmonies and it became part of their sound.
      Also, I wouldn't say he "lost his ability to stay in tune". He's very much on key for most of this, but alters some of the melodies to conserve his voice a bit and because people's range naturally decreases with age. Not gonna say drugs didn't change his voice a bit, but people saying he had totally lost it at this point are so, so wrong.

      worst? some of those notes and articulations he's hitting are better than anything ive heard him ever do live. he knew he was sick. there are things in music called 'scales' and when you sing in these things in pitch, as long as you're in key, it all works. he's not out of key for a majority of his singing here. it comes off as 'passionate' not 'at his worst'. still my favorite version of the song cause he sounds like he knows he isnt doing well

      On no, there were definitely a couple of times where he sounded genuinely bad, I don’t think was one of them though. There’s a Rio ‘93 video floating around somewhere, for example, where he was really flat and he kept losing his breath and missing whole lines, and a few times he had to kind of sit down right there in front of the mic. I don’t know if he was just worn out for some reason or if he was sick/high/jonesing or just hot or what, but anyone who’s seen him that way would definitely never say this was bad.

    it´s fascinating how much support and admiration Layne still receives in comments despite so many years since he left. Most singers rarely get half of the positive feedback even during their active careers. Many of these comments are also very heartfelt. There is something very unique about how Layne approached singing and we fell in love with it despite never actually knowing him.

      It helps he seemed like a nice dude that just got caught up in a cycle. Today he probably would have gotten better help but back then it was more stigmatized. Today every tom dick and Harry are addicts or in recovery. Back then I think he felt like he was less of a human or that he was a failure or a bad role model so he just stayed to himself and lived his life the way he felt he wanted. Maybe in this day and age he's wouldn't have been such a recluse and maybe been more open to getting help. But he was sick for a long time and only Layne knows to what extent.

      Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range.
      However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
      ua-cam.com/video/gh20q3Dx8RI/v-deo.html
      Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.
      Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

I also heard he OD'd a couple of hrs after the show and was taken to a KC emergency room where he eventually recovered and made it home. Layne performed all his shows like this, leaning into the mic stand but what struck me and others was when their set was done, he literally walked off stage like an old man. He was over 6ft, but he moved like a dude in his 80's, obviously he was doped up during the show and amazingly his natural voice killed it, even his screams were on key despite being wasted. People always think Layne destroyed his voice by singing very abrasively but tbh I really think it was how he took care of himself off stage. One of my old music teachers was a huge fan and said he had surprisingly good voice control but also said how drugs will fuck up your voice. Even if you’re not a singer, I mean look at what smoking cigarettes does to your voice.

    • @DorianBrightMusic
      @DorianBrightMusic Рік тому +3

      Much of his Dirt-era technique sounds very, very healthy. It wasn’t technique that destroyed him - a lot of his abrasiveness from Facelift up until Tripod is primarily a result of nasality and healthy distortion. It was that if your muscles atrophy and you body wastes away, so will all the mechanisms necessary for singing, as well as the energy. The performance here may not be healthy-sounding or quite like Layne in his prime, but it’s still an incredible effort from someone who was so, so nearly dead as he was here.

      No one thinks that. It was 100% drugs. Can you imagine singing powerfully in a hot ass arena with a weak body and gurgly stomach, all kinds of gastrointestinal issues happening, possible liver problems, dry mouth, fatigue, muscle atrophy, malnutrition, nausea, headaches, brain fog and severe depression at your condition? We are all lucky Layne was still standing here at all. He OD right after the show. He was probably feeling like crap/death during this show but he still gave it everything. It's a travesty but he probably could've got his earlier voice back if he got the general state of health back in his overall body. He was 100% the best singer I've heard in my entire life. RIP Layne Staley. Thanks for sharing your gifts. 😢❤

    I actually love the way he sounds here, it's one of my favorite vocal performances of Man in the Box. I like the way he changes up the chorus here--which was intentional, as he does the same thing in the other shows of the final tour. He's singing more in his throat here (a la Kurt Cobain) than he did when he was healthier, which yes strictly speaking isn't as technically proficient or sustainable, but it sounds more raw and aesthetically pleasing (at least for my taste). He's still got a lot of power. Much more interesting take on the chorus in this rendition, too.

      joe Costello couldn't have said it better!!! Not sure what any of the naysayers r talking about tbh, Layne single handedly switched up the ENTIRE song just my the melody in his vocals during this performance n it's freakin amazing if u ask me!! Even Jerry gives him a thumbs up!

    Layne Staley had such a unique and awesome voice. Man that guy could really belt out the lyrics. I wish he was still with us.

    I've been arguing with people the last few days about Chris Cornell's last show. They've been saying he sounded great and there was nothing wrong there and I'm like tha fuck??? It's obvious to me that something was wrong. He was always behind on the vocals and stumbling around. Here, however, I find myself in the opposite camp. I think Layne was amazing here, and as someone else says, there was a lot of improvisation which sounded great. I love this melody almost as much as the recording, especially after hearing this song 10,000,000 times since it came out when I was in high school. That's my feelings on it and just wanted to share it with all the other Layne Staley fans.

    No matter how far into the void he slid, his voice stayed strong and powerful. So sad we lost this beautiful Soul but it's a privilege to have heard his Godlike sound

      Everyone wants to fall back on GOD when they completely ignore his word and commandments. After this life is the Judgment. Now while you still have breath is the time to seek him and learn who he is.

      Yeah right and God decided to kill him slowly with crack & heroin and had him shitting himself his last months on earth. I don't think so.

    You guys are crazy saying he didn't sound as good or he was struggling, vocalists tend to try different things live with their pitch, such as he did in the first chorus, and in the second he hit it perfectly! Slow you're roll before talking shit about a legend! Be glad you were alive to hear this beautiful creature from heaven..

    This is my favorite version of man in the box, they all had this really insane amount of intensity during this and knowing this was the last song with Layne they played, it gave me some of the biggest chills I’ve ever gotten, just raw and a lot of emotion fucking love it

    he sounds amazing. the people who don't appreciate his artistic license - of his own music - are the same folks who think bands shouldn't evolve. they're artists...and he is absolutely in the top 3 of all grunge. I'm so jealous of this crowd. wish I was there. RIP Babe
