Their voices danced in and out and around each other, something extremely rare . Its a special phenomenon that usually only happens between siblings or parents and children. All the best singers have their siblings singing backup with them because of this. I know, because my sister and i do it. We dont even have to think about it or discuss how well do it. It just naturally happens. Our voices instinctively know how to dance and weave around each other. How to slip into perfect harmonies without even really thinking about it. Its a special gift between related people. But it does happen for people that are very close. Very like minded, like Layne and Jerry were and now Will and Jerry share it. Think of Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, Sheryl Crow, Heart. They all have siblings singing with them. Its very cool and amazes even my sister and i sometimes, how we just KNOW what and how to sing something with each other. CSN are " brothers " for all intentions and they have it. Layne and Jerry had it. I dont know if it has a name or what other people call it. I just know it is something that really exists and having experienced it personally, all i can say is yeah. I get it. Its a way cool and awesome thing. A gift.
I'm an old fart. Late 50s. Grand Funk, Zep, even Chicago and Three Dog Night punch my buttons. But AIC and this Staley lad, I've been studying them for the last couple of years. Yes, I know. Late to the game, as usual. But wow, these guys could compose music like no one's business. And masterful performing. An original sound and feel that's uniquely their own and hugely appealing. It's painful to know Mr. Staley's life ended way, way too early. But man, I dig their music big time. They had/have soul.
They were the only band from the grunge era who depended so heavily on vocal harmony. It makes a difference. Plus Mike Inez is one of the great melodic bassists.

Up until the very end every single member of the band tried to help him. Sean has said every three months he’d call and whenever he was by Layne’s condo he’d try and get in and see him. It was only really around the last years of Layne’s life that anyone got honest about why the band wasn’t together as up until then they’d still try and cover for him and lie about his condition. Layne had a lot of friends and family who tried to help him in every way possible. It didn’t matter though. If someone won’t help themselves there’s nothing anyone else can do for them.
I have been trying to master this drum track for a long time and can't quite seem to get it like he does it. The guy has to be one of the most underrated drummers in rock.
My friend died last summer. We hung out an insurmountable amount of time in our teenage years, drank, hustled and chased girls together. Unfortunately he took a turn towards a severe reliance on heavy drugs while I headed onto a clean and sober lifestyle. A few years into our twenties we stopped hanging out together as we lost touch and could barely find any practical interests in common, but we still cherished those few and far between moments we bumped into each other. The last time I saw him was in 2019 when I announced to him my decision to relocate to the big smoke. He wished me luck and told me to drive around carefully as there are way too many Bentley's and Rolls Royce's that I could bump into (his way of wishing me prosperity and good fortune). I have gone on to become a lot richer and more prosperous than I've ever been whereas today he's six feet underground. "You're my friend, I will defend. And if we change, I will love you anyway." I miss you dearly, Danny.
Oh no no no.... because to put them in, would lead to comparisons with other bands who got in. We know there's no comparison for the quality of the entire body of work. They should stay above the fray and not be thrown in that mixing pot. Hell, they were so good, they broke rock, similar to how Neo broke the matrix. When the greatest guitarist who ever laced them up becomes the band's groupie (Eddie Van Halen), you know they're so far above the rest in the field, that no real comparisons can be made. Rock was all downhill after their time ended. Yes, Cornell & Bennington had smash hits afterwards, but those 2's entire body of work would not slay and overwhelm the way AIC's did, and continues to do so today, due to its timeless nature.
My favorite Alice In Chains song. The drums and bass are gorgeous, and then the harmonies are so good it almost makes you forget about them. The guitar is yearning and snarling at the same time. And the whole song conveys pain in a way that was (and remains) unique to AoC.
Guitars are great too but I guess they always get attention. As a guitar player I actually listen for the drums and bass more especially after I started playing in bands.
+Jay Tee Bee as a singer/writer i can honesty say since being in bands it takes me a coupe of listens before lyrics and anything but the strongest melodies (like this song) sink in but i'm all over the music! weird eh? :-)
Sean Kinney deserves more attention regarding his drumming. The man’s rhythm is tight, and he’s got a groove that hits the spot without seeming excessive. It flows real smooth.
They intertwine so perfectly. I try to sing with one of them and invariably end up drifting into the other. And the harmonies are so non-traditional it’s like you have to rewire your voice.
Alice in Chains- the band that is always there for you in your darkest moments. Heroin in music form. Not at all saying heroin should be glamourised, but at least you won’t die from too much Alice in Chains 😂
I remember I was like 24 when I first heard this. I loved it. A few years later, my Dad who had been battling cancer told me, "Hey I love this song No Excuses. It sounds like he is singing about me." He was 21 years older and listened to classic rock but when he said that it floored me. Music has no age. He is dead now, but that he liked an Alice In Chains song is one link I never thought we would have.
Thanks to Jerry for writing this great song, lyrics and music, plus half of the vocals. Yes he's underrated... people only consider him a riff writer but he is so much more. IMO his co-lead vocals in this song are just as important as Layne's, and his lyrics are great here. This one is actually about Layne and him, so glad they both sing.
If you guys are having trouble with abstinence don't forget about opioid replacement treatment. There's decades of evidence now showing how much safer and effective it is for recovering opioid addicts and treatment is free in most states for low income folks on medicaid
I’m only 16, yet I love all of these old grunge artists better than present day music. Today’s music just feels so artificial due to the heavy use of autotune in almost every song. But back then, there was none of that. Just raw, touching vocals. Not about heartbreak, not about boys or girls, but about life and how moody and honest it can really be. I’m a way it’s special. Despite it lasting for only a few years. I believe that grunge is truly the last sliver of truth that we have left.
I miss Layne every day. Along with Scott, Chris, Chester, even Kurt. Time was SUPPOSED to ease the pain and yet it has not. Music like what A.I.C. and Mad Season did was a godsend for me in the grips of my major depressive disorder. Thank you Alice In Chains and Mad Season for saving my life more than once.
Why do the most talented people in music have to leave us in a tragedy I'm an addict myself and it's Scarry we never think we never know u don't have to b a rock star to die from abuse but it's sounds mean but I guess easier for them having the money to do whenever they wanted I guess I'm not really making any sense here at all but it's just a damn shame I'm an addict and it doesn't mean I'm a bad person this bad and good people everywhere there are some grimy scumbag drug addicts who just take take and steal there's some functionable addicts but most attics are good people and definitely talented people I don't know what I'm trying to say but it's scary it's almost like I want to say why why Lane why all of our singers and rock stars die of drugs how come I'm not Dead
This band wrote music. The themes are deep. The band name itself being interrelated to the story of going down the Rabbit hole, but being chained to not knowing. Hence a song like man in a box. Pretty damn existentialist if you ask me. Bands in these days not only made music the videos actually had unique imagery like this one.
"Artists" these days don't put the same soul into their music. If you take a look at it, most music is mass produced generic pieces of garbage that all sound like they follow a fill in the blank sheet. Things like One Direction, Beyonce, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, and many many more "artists" are all examples of people who use emotions of young insecure people to sell their "music". Almost none of the "artists" I mentioned even have a credible stand with an audience over the age of 25.
+Morgan Freeman F There's still plenty of underground musicians that put a lot of passion into thier music. No matter the state of mainstream music there will always be people that have passion for the art they create.
+Mad Season it really is interesting how it is a specific task of creating non purposfull music that will just make them money they know their audience is just silly people so that's what they make for them the diffrence in the last few decades that some important philosophical music made it to main stream now most do not. NOW one must search for musical treasures
I remember when this album was released, and for four days in a row I went daily to my local music store to listen to this album, because I couldn't afford it yet. I was even dreaming about "Jar Of Flies", I was so blown away from this epic piece of music. And listening to it now, I find myself travelling back in time back to those days, when I was a teen, and listening with closed eyes and a fat grin and full of joy to those magic songs, that were written in pain, but managed to heal so many. Thankyou, Alice In Chains

djay6651 Yeah man I love that song! My buddies and I jam it often, we even play the harmonica solo but none of us can sing lol
Sean Kinney's playing is sick on this track.
Kurt Hanson they didn’t show him or Inez in the video though. Maybe I just missed em.
Abfreakinsolutely agree!!!
I have been trying to master this drum track for a long time and can't quite seem to get it like he does it. The guy has to be one of the most underrated drummers in rock.
June 2024. Does this band ever get old? Lova Alice in Chains.
NEVER❤
July 2024 nope love AIC!
Nope. They don’t.
Never!!
Music that stands the test if time...
They sound so ancient yet so rock! The harmonies are like ancient Druid or church chants. Eerie and amazing.
Yea like davidic worship in the temple!!!!!
Love Sean Kinney's triplets on the hi-hats and work on the Splash. He is an underrated drummer. His fills are so creative.
não vai mudar a sitauçlão
I also ways drum this song so hard on my steering wheel. Love it! Sean is underrated for sure.
If anything, sometimes it was triplets, and sometimes it was 4 before the kick. Even just those little variations were * chef's kiss *
He was doing trap hihats back in '94 before they were a thing
🤪
this band definitely deserve to be in the hall of Fame, one of the greatest bands ever
To come up with a song like this and have grunge songs and a bit of metal is unreal.
They must not have sold out like some others bc they should be in the R&R Hall of Fame.
For me, one of the greatest drum intros.
Still sounds fresh and seems inspiring todays drummers.
No one can touch them. No one.
That bass in the background is hypnotic
"Every day something hits me I'm so cold, no excuses." RIP Layne, thank you for everything. I hope you found your peace. I hope we all will soon.
Best rock drums intro ever. Period.
This music is deceptively simple to undiscerning ears. It is actually very sophisticated music.
When the levee breaks has it beat
@@WaluigiLebron alcohol had bonham beat
IKR that groove is genius
It's songs like this and groups like Alice in Chains that made the 90's so damn awesome. Rest in peace Layne.
My favorite Alice In Chains song. The drums and bass are gorgeous, and then the harmonies are so good it almost makes you forget about them. The guitar is yearning and snarling at the same time. And the whole song conveys pain in a way that was (and remains) unique to AoC.
A.J. Rose ~ This is one of the few song that I even bother to sing !
Guitars are great too but I guess they always get attention. As a guitar player I actually listen for the drums and bass more especially after I started playing in bands.
+Jay Tee Bee as a singer/writer i can honesty say since being in bands it takes me a coupe of listens before lyrics and anything but the strongest melodies (like this song) sink in but i'm all over the music! weird eh? :-)
+A.J. Rose This song sounds Zeppelin-esque.
Couldn't agree more!
Sean Kinney deserves more attention regarding his drumming. The man’s rhythm is tight, and he’s got a groove that hits the spot without seeming excessive. It flows real smooth.
Fucking facts
"You my friend
I will defend
And if we change, well
I love you anyway"
Beautiful stuff!
Literally my favorite lyrics of the song. Reminds me of my brother. ❤️🤘
Easily one of the greatest songs of all time.
If AIC isn't on your Greatest Bands of All Time list, WTF is wrong with you????
EVERYTHING
Shit, It's too the point now, where everything else I listen to, feels like it's some kind of music lite. Nothing hits like AIC.
It’s Top 3, at least with Pantera on there.
That drum fill at the beginning always gets me.
The drums and percussion in this are amazing
I just love how Layne Stanley and Jerry Cantrell voices just harmonized well so beautifully together,RIP Layne gone but never forgotten 😢🎸😍😍😍🤘🤘🤘
Reminds me of Crosby stills Nash and Young
@Josh Weaver I'm sorry what?
@@ashestostardust666 **Staley, lol.
@@ashestostardust666 Staley
They intertwine so perfectly. I try to sing with one of them and invariably end up drifting into the other.
And the harmonies are so non-traditional it’s like you have to rewire your voice.
20 years ago today. We miss you Layne we wish you were still here with us.
This may well be their finest piece of work
Layne Staley is irreplaceable. May he RIP. See you on the other side when I get there
👍
Totally true but life must go on.
Agreed
He's with his buddy Andy Wood, on the other side...
+srujan00 and his best friend....Mike
The 900+ people who disliked this song have absolutely no excuses.
Lol
Larry Ibarra Proven Truth 😂
And "they dont know" it
yea they do... braindead.
LOL
This is the kind of songs that you not only love....you feel it!!
Yes!!!!
Cold chills, indeed.
Yup
Alice in Chains- the band that is always there for you in your darkest moments. Heroin in music form. Not at all saying heroin should be glamourised, but at least you won’t die from too much Alice in Chains 😂
Favorite Alice in Chains song right here
It is hard to argue it is a masterpiece
That drum intro is sweet!
I just had 5 drinks, this song hurts so much i wanna cry uncontrollably
This song is a perfect example of their almost ethereal vocal harmonies, brilliant song writers.
I remember I was like 24 when I first heard this. I loved it. A few years later, my Dad who had been battling cancer told me, "Hey I love this song No
Excuses. It sounds like he is singing about me." He was 21 years older and listened to classic rock but when he said that it floored me. Music has no age. He is dead now, but that he liked an Alice In Chains song is one link I never thought we would have.
What a great story, thanks for sharing. Your dad is now in a better place watching over you 🕊️
I've put this on AICs websites... I'm a 63 year old grandmother and I love everything from Rachmaninov to Rush....AIC is one of my favorites!!!
.
Absolute genius, please someone tell todays so-called artists this is how music should sound!
I agree!
Now absolute garbage is created.
If you were born in the 80’s and you didn’t like Alice In Chains you were my enemy
stupid
That harmony is perfection
I miss the 90s 😢
I am a recovering addict,
A person asked me 20 years ago why I liked this song.
Brilliant timeless track
Right , I'm 40 years a junkie who is now1 year clean, no excuses
hello. hope you're doing well
If you guys are having trouble with abstinence don't forget about opioid replacement treatment. There's decades of evidence now showing how much safer and effective it is for recovering opioid addicts and treatment is free in most states for low income folks on medicaid
One of my all time favorite songs since I was a teenager. That fact has never changed.
One of the best songs....I miss this type of music :(
sean Kinney is one of my favorite drummers and his clean playing on this song really dresses it up perfectly
They were ahead of their time. So glad I was a part of this generation growing up. RIP Layne. ❤️
This is very well written for only being 16, impressive and truthful!
You sure your 16? If so you need to be a writer , carry on kid
@@Neesie75 right I told him to write if he's only 16 he's already a writer
You are a writer coming from an experienced rock critic.
There’s plenty of songs about heartbreak in grunge.
I miss Layne every day too! Fav singer ❤️
Love that..❤✌ That's a big part of why I write lyrics myself (and want to learn more instruments again).
We all nééd to thank them!! 👍💯💥
the pain slowly dulls over time.
Undoubtably one of the GREATEST songs ever written!
I’m in love with the drums on this
Love the intro to this one. So crisp and clean.
Moved to Seattle in March 1991. What a time to live there as far as the music scene was concerned! Miss those days and that music.
+Morgan Freeman Absolutely true, Mr. Freeman. Absolutely.
+Morgan Freeman F There's still plenty of underground musicians that put a lot of passion into thier music. No matter the state of mainstream music there will always be people that have passion for the art they create.
Morgan Freeman i really liked you in "Shawshank Redemption"....
+Mad Season it really is interesting how it is a specific task of creating non purposfull music that will just make them money
they know their audience is just silly people so that's what they make for them
the diffrence in the last few decades that some important philosophical music made it to main stream now most do not.
NOW one must search for musical treasures
The drums at this one are awesome
Very unique vocal harmonies. No other band like it. Ever.
Exactly, this album is a masterpiece💗
damn I love Alice in Chains so much it hurts
Same!!
It must hurt because they expose the hurtful side of life that the rest hide under sugarcoated words and chords. Save a few exceptions for the rest.
@@RicardoMartinez-oh9sq Their songs relate to my pain, and the darkness is so real
@@moondusk8385 A psychiatrist I love, Carl G. Jung, devoted entire chapters of his books to this kind of darkness, or obscurity, that looms over the world. These great musicians knew how to put it into art.
One of the best drum intros of all times
I just love this band so much. So many great songs. R.I.P Layne.
God made his voice specifically for rock damn I love 90's rock.
I love the drums in the first 7 seconds
+Kris Owens ~ I love the whole song.
+SUGAR XYLER Agreed. Just acknowledging that the percussion really draws me in.
+Kris Owens Does the same for me.
+Kris Owens Yea Sean Kinney does a great job throughout the whole song
+Kris Owens reminded Rush
Have to visit here periodically in the year 2023 to remind myself what real music sounds like
I spin my cd regularly. Sounds better than YT
Jar of Flies is easily their best album ever. A throwaway EP became the only EP to be no.1 on charts of note.
No joke this is my favorite album of all time lol
The guitar and bass work in this is so damn unique
That guitar solo is fucking amazing! short but pure gold...
The sound of the 90s
За это обожаю Джерри. Никогда ничего лишнего. Играет для музыки, а не для показухи.
"Everyday it's something hits me I'm so cold." RIP Layne. You will always be loved bro. Thank you Jerry for being one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
These guys took badass to unprecedented levels
I don't why this song it makes me feel so nostalgic... am i the only one?
pan1396 Nope dude.. I have the same feeling too
Thats the AiC effect. It's the most nostalgic music ever.
@@OcelotDAD 34 years old getting married in a month.. listened to AIC as a kid.. about 6 months ago I developed a fascination.. I can't get enough!
Like a fine wineeeee!
Definately not the only one..
Alice in chains and type o negative are my absolute favorite bands hands down. Both bands have such a haunting sound and not to mention the riffs are just pure sound. both front men are incredibly unique it's mind blowing.
Glad I grew up in the 90s really wish I can go back the memories of listening to this music
Seriously who would dislike any song by them every song is a masterpiece to me
RIP Layne. Your music is a place I can go to when I’m just simply drained. We all miss you dearly.
One of my very favorite songs of all-time. Perfect in every way.
The production on this song came out so clean and awesome.
It hits different every time it hits the same😊
