- US Air Force pilot Mike Couillard takes his ten-year-old son Matthew skiing in Turkey. Losing the trail in a freak snowstorm they wander blindly into the wilderness. Tired, cold and hungry, they find a cave to shelter for the night. Days pass with no sign of rescue, despite a massive search operation.
Back home Mike's wife and other children wait, praying. Mike makes an agonizing decision to leave his son and seek help. Reaching some abandoned huts, he collapses. Two days later, he's discovered by passing woodcutters who he directs to the cave. They find Matthew, frostbitten but alive after his ten-day ordeal in the wilderness

We're all human and we make many mistakes, only to reflect back to realize where we went wrong. People: "A 6,000 ft mountain isn't a serious mountain."

honestly out of all the season this has to be one of the most dire episodes just crazy! they where so lucky to be saved
Why do people wait 7 or 8 days after not eating to try to journey off for help?? When they are at their absolute weakest? He had skis, as soon as the weather broke he should have went. I personally would have broken limbs off of the trees and wrote help with the limbs. That doesn't seem like any survival training to sit in a cave and do nothing and almost died and wait 8 or 9 days until your almost dead to venture out! Thank the Lord they made it is all I can say! ❤
And the dad says he couldn't believe the situation he had gotten himself into. I was expecting him to say the situation he had gotten his son into.
Absolutely, that stood out to me also.
Find shelter and stay put if you’re positive you’re still in the area you were expected to be. By day three, since he hadn’t heard or seen anything, it should’ve been apparent to him that the seven hours they’d traveled must have taken them a significant distance from the lodge and that it was time to make a move while he still had energy and wasn’t debilitated by frostbite. I’m really stunned that he waited a week before he made a move, but maybe it had more to do with not wanting to leave his son than it did a deficiency of common sense.
I'm surprised that in a woodland they didnt manage/try to make a fire? (very easy to say from behind a keyboard in a warm building I know)

Oh the ending… so many tears of joy and gratitude for the humanity ❤
The major mistake was getting off the lift. The other mistake is skiing blindly into the snow storm and walking for hours in the blizzard after getting lost. What can they done? The most visible path was to follow the ski lift direction. They could have waited it out by digging a hole in the snow for shelter as the snow ski would make a perfect shovel. When deciding to go backward or forward, it's best to go back on your steps because forward is the unknown, unless it's impossible to backtrack.
What he did right was getting to a high point to find a clear direction. Getting lost waste more energy and put you further away from rescuers.
I never understood why people get off the chairlift when the snow starts coming in like that. You can choose to stay on it and go back down to the lodge. It’s not fun to ski in bad weather like that. And obviously it’s not safe. How he got so far off the beaten trail was simply because it was snowing so hard he couldn’t see in front of him. But I don’t understand why he kept going on for 7 more hours once it got dark. (?)
Your an arm chair quarterback
Exactly, why would he go on for 7 hours? At any point he could of turned around. Would of been a better choice. And got rescued much sooner.
@@lancekiel1467 *You're
@@barbgold1479 *Would've and *could've, not "Would of" and "could of"
Common error since they sound nearly identical when spoken aloud.
My buddy and I did that on a snowboarding trip. When we got to the top the weather was bad like this and we just looked at each other and agreed to just ride the lift back down and get drinks at the lodge.
15:00 laying skis on ground in X would be better but you can use tree limbs and shake the trees in your area free of snow, shake them, smack them with sticks and throw sticks into branches as high as you can.......this takes snow off the trees in the area and makes it very easy for pilots to see the change in terrain and fire, the smoke of course helps but have pine needles and plastics ready to place on fire when you hear air or ground vehicles
Making a sign in snow by dragging both feet side by side and going over the same sign as snow builds up, like SOS or X will help if no fire, and making the same signs with tree limbs, rocks, moss or even water on rocks.....anything helps and Rene more you change and upset the natural looks of the area the easier you will be spotted. If you hunting use blood from animals on rocks and paths and snow for signs
God Bless
Don't use blood...... It can attract predators who are attracted to the scent..... That's one of the main survival rules
All of that may be true but if the plane is not looking for you in that area it's meaningless.
Yes. I would do like that. If you use the snow to write the word HELP. The word will be visible at one point.
Right but the father may have been so exhausted at that point, sleeping in below freezing snow all night would drain almost all energy!
Blood will attract wild hungry animals
It occurs to me that a large aerosol of red spray-paint would be a very useful emergency tool.
The actor playing snow is amazingly fantastic!
I remember when I was 14, like 13 years ago from now, me and my friend who was 17 at the time, decided to take one last skiing, which requires getting to the top of a mountain by ropeway and then skiing down to the other side of mountain and then taking ride back, but the problem was rides were working till 17:00 and we idiots took ropeway at like 16:55, so by the time we finished skiing to other side of mountain rides were closed on that side and nobody noticed us and I will never forget the moment my friend looked at me and just dead serious said to me "There are wolfs around here and it gets very cold in early morning!" hahahahaha which me being 14 back then didn't realize the seriousness of situation, so I wasn't that scared...Luckily few minutes later some people passed near us with snowmobile and our ordeal was over after 10 minutes of struggling!:D

I can’t for the life of me understand when they walk hours and find nothing, why they don’t STAY PUT OR GO BACK WHERE THEY CAME FROM??! The LITERAL first survival rule is don’t MOVE! Stay put! I get people want to “do something” instead of sit but for goodness sake, 7 hours, you find nothing, and you keep going? It makes no sense!
Always. Carry a lighter when hiking, skiing etc. It's a small thing you can carry that can save your life You have a much better chance of surviving if you can start a fire.
I was thinking same thing, but if you know how to rub two sticks together to start fire, even better
Finally new episode...
Almost watched all the old episodes...
I mean you just go back down with the lift when the conditions are bad you don’t continue skiing
These stories just go to show that these searches should continue longer than they do!!
I think the father slept through a few of his survivalist classes.
They survived for longer than anyone else thought was possible, must have done something right.
Just a couple of tips. Since they had no tools, very limited possibilities, however, break as many of those evergreen boughs as possible and make a nest in your shelter to lay on, then bury yourself in like 3 feet of them to stay warm. Also make a large X in the snow with 10 meter long piles of boughs where they could have been spotted by a helicopter. They should have spent the whole first day breaking off pine boughs.
Any time you go on outdoor adventures, at the very least each person should carry a lighter, a pocket space blanket, and a multi tool, something to put water in and a whistle.
Quite an amazing survival story this one. Glad they made it through.
For a guy in the military how many mistakes could he make?!
Yea, waiting so long...he should have went and find resort ASAP. I know that survival logic is - wait for the rescue but it should not apply when you are so close to the civilization.

@@millertime97jm yes, it's sad how some people lack reading comprehension.
It doesn't take a genius to figure out sitting in a cave makes you invisible. Should've done what he did on day 8 on day 2.
For one he had no idea he was so far away on day 1 or 2. They teach u stay put, that's what he did. No idea if your a parent but I'd never leave my child until it was unbundtly clear I had to. Unfortunately in this scenario it took 4-5 for that to happen. Now I agree he should've left a few days earlier than he did but in all fairness he did try. I think the last attempt he made it cuz he knew it was life or death at that point. The will to not leave his son most likely stopped him fr succeeding at 1st which I completely understand as a parent.
Let's say the father goes 4 help on day 2, 3, 4; then he reaches the cabins on the 5th day. Then stay put due 2 his condition, frostbite. Now what? Whose gonna help him? No one, cz on those early days, no people had stopped by the cabins.
So now it's day 10, he sees people. ...so it wouldn't have matter if he did leave earlier...
You never know what you would do in a life or death situation, he took what he knew and put it to use. His decision to go down to the cabins that day allowed him to come into contact with people who probably would not have been there on day 2. Everything happens for a reason, he ultimately saved the both of their lives by staying put in the cave and making the choice to leave when he did.
I feel bad to see it but I was thinking the exact same thing. For someone who had survival skills, I'm surprised that he walked four miles of the moment he felt he didn't know where he was in the first place. They should have stayed where they were until the blizzard went away. But to walk miles in a direction you don't know where you are and then hide in a cave for days? I don't know what the father was thinking
At the very least he should have made a large SOS sign with tree branches on the first day and maintained it after every snow fall...
Surprising stuff going on in this story that I am finding it hard to hold my tongue.

How would you be in a worse position to move from a hidden cave not found for 8 days to a group of cabins? He should have taken his son with him.
They should have gone together on day 2 or 3.
This episode is the most upsetting. That father did everything wrong.
Why is the advice in this sort of situation always "stay put and stay together", when I've already watched a bunch of I Shouldn't Be Alive episodes where moving and/or splitting up resulted in a rescue that otherwise wouldn't have ever come?
Because if people are actively searching for you it is better to stay where you are. In some situations however it is better to move to attempt a self rescue.
A. Why was the son still at the ski resort alone?
B. Why when the bus left, did they leave a 10 year old boy alone? How did he...what did I miss?
C. The best rescue planes? What about some sort of heat seeking radar type deal that would have found them?
When I heard that in the beginning, I thought "that's insane". They're pretty tired from skiing all day, the resort is about to close, but they decide to go for one last run anyway. @How Not To huh?! I think I read your thoughts right?! Yes I guess I just used to think 'how do people even get stuck up a mountain.....just go downwards surely' but its not that simple I'm sure
@How Not To yeh right!! I'd have been pretty useless but I wouldn't have done what he did for sure
Does anyone know the haunting soundtrack played at the end ? It sounds african...I shazamed it but no luck
After the blizzard, this dad should have exerted all efforts to climb to be seen not hide inside a cave for seven days. I’ve watched much worst scenarios in this episodes than this military man who is not even injured. In dire situations, I can carry my ten yr old child just to be saved, how pathetic of him
Things can spiral out of control so quickly on the mountain.
The father did what he had to do ..He did not want to leave his son....Im glad they were saved
