Is anyone else glad to see the dad and son telling the story? I sure am
These documentaries are better than all Hollywood movies
I know, right? Sometimes nonfiction would be too unbelievable as fiction! And these stories in this series are so well produced. Nice job by all involved.
The actors are top notch. I don't think I've seen one episode where the actors weren't come to think of it.
Totally agree with this thread. You forget that the actors are not the real folks. This is better acting than Hollywood!

' weren't come to think of ' what does that mean???
This one made me cry, because I recently lost my dad, who loved to vacation in Alaska. There is a reason that 'rafting season' didn't start for 2 more weeks, and they had to find out the hard way what that reason was. The rivers were too dangerous, and the father was very lucky to have survived.
So sorry for your loss.
The Bush Pilot who found Blake and dropped supplies then found his father was a true Bush Pilot!!
Long live Father and Son.. I cried at the end.. Love from India, Mumbai
Very thankful that my son’s idea of celebrating my 65th birthday is to bring me chocolates and flowers, in the safety of my own home.
This is my survival guide show on what not to do.
loliwe moyo Yup. Have a beacon, keep emergency supplies (water-proofed matches or lighter, some food or soda cans, compass, gun/knife, micro-light hammock) in inner pockets, go with a group or have a well planned route with interim check-ins (not see you in 2 weeks!), try to make something visible from the air, stay put if you can, etc.
Having lost my own dear dad, this was heart wrenching to watch...
So glad they made it home, and hoping Blake doesn't take his 65 year old, 1yr post surgery, father into the wilderness again!!
Well said. I'm sorry for the loss of your dad. 💕💞
@a nu start wow, you're real smart.

@a nu start . "A new start" .......only when a true independent opposition is allowed to enter the Capitol , not with one of the two allowed parties that both give the Pentagon carte blanche.....which usually is the privilege of one party states.
Thankfully it's business as usual again , with a major world conflict looming .
A year is a long time for surgery, especially a minor one. Also, I know 65 year olds more active than 20 year olds. It’s all depending on the person and situation.
After watching so many of these videos I'm putting water, blanket and flash light in my car so the 8 miles to town and I get lost I'll have supplies, ever thankful this warm bed I'm in on this cold night. Feb 20th 2021
Wow watching this gave me goosebumps...Alaska is no place to discover on ur own.
I'm glad they made it out alive.
No it's not. It's a vast wilderness much unexplored even today.
Just never let Blake plan any outing again, ever!!!
WHAT A STORY...I can't even begin to imagine the gut wrenchingly fear & hopelessness they must have felt...My heart won't stop pounding...
I think what bothers me the most is to hear Blake say that even after this horrific experience, that by God's mercy they managed to survive, he still will not take a guided tour. He learned absolutely nothing from this.
No? At the end they said they hike but have never gone rafting.
I think the joy of rafting is over.
And you can bet his wife isn't going to put up with him ever doing that again! Not with 2 kids!

There has to have been at some point though. Maybe if they faced a situation like this, they'd remember that...
Yup.. know all about that. Never knew what a normal family was like still don’t
After watching so many episodes of [I Shouldn't be Alive], I've learned that if I want to celebrate something, instead of going in a crazy trip, I might as well make a barbecue in the backyard...(^^).
People are crazy!
A barbecue? Are you kidding? There could be a gas explosion, a fire, or just heavy winds knocking you down outside. Or a tornado. Or heavy rains. Or terrifying neighbors coming to get you. Please don’t risk your life by going outside.
After watching the 11th one of these shows, I know one thing.
If you don’t have an ability to contact anyone and your going somewhere remote…
that’s a recipe for disaster if something goes wrong. 💯
How life used to be all the time ages and ages ago
Yet humans have always done this. Always.
In the 70s you had no way of contacting anyone if you stepped away from civilization at ALL.
And in pretty much all wilderness, there's no cell phone access at all. No towers. Too remote. Too many mountains.
Only one in a million chance of things going wrong. Much more dangerous crossing the road, but it's funny how people see things 😂 no one prays before crossing the road!
Made his 65-year old father go on a grueling six-day rafting and camping trip that he wasn’t physically able to handle and didn’t want to go on; dad had broken his ankle just the year before, but sonny boy had plenty of hiking scheduled for them; didn’t take a radio or cell; didn’t bother to find out why no one goes that early in the summer. Yep, such a “loving” son, lol.
Maybe there were darker motives?
The son thought he was all that. These shows are almost 100% men trying to prove something .
Alaska Wilderness is not Disneyland! So many People do not realize this.
Alaska Wilderness is actually Disneyland. So, yeah.
I agree with you.. I'll stay home and hike around my neighborhood.. lol
I always end up crying at the end! So happy it worked out and both survived. Much love 🤍
I'm not convinced by the father's downtrodden, disappointment ladden statement he makes with the "of course it wasn't his fault" the look on his face betrays just a glimpse of his true resentment.
Nothing to communicate in case of an emergency..????......ARE YOU INSANE...????!!!!!!!! " If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail "
Their supplies were washed away with the boat.
me personally I align with humanity rather than the senseless lethal force of nature. They made numerous mistakes but I root for their survival none the less beacuse they are people.
What would you suggest? People have been doing wilderness since humans lived on the planet... and phones don't work in wilderness...
You've never been in real wilderness, I take it.
@@johannachin2921he had no radio in his supply pack , deliberately didn't bring one
Ah yes, take your elderly father into the middle of nowhere Alaska with no phone, no radio, no way to get help if something goes wrong. I swear the people in a lot of these episodes are just asking for trouble.
Their self confidence very high. Lots of people around us are like this. And you can’t change their opinion
Why? AK is wild but beautiful and I understand his wanting the trip to be the 2 of them without a guided tour. However, he should have taken a radio keeping it in him and waterproof at all times inside his life vest for any help needed. However, my father was a major heart patient given a month to live when we moved to the bush of AK (his choice n my mom thought it was his last wish) without power and cell phones weren't around then. We built a small cabin still overlooking the lake today. Year round creek next to us crystal clear glacier fed cold water. Catch breakfast from the lake. Electronics weren't around like they are today. We'd take turns guessing the temperature and see who came the closest. Had kerosene lamps until we got propane lights. It was hard but nice. My father had 3 heart attacks out there. His one month in 1984 turned out to extend to 2002. AK saved his life and gave him many more years with us.
Phone? Phone?!!
No phones work in deep wilderness.
And they took all kinds of gear. It was swept away!
There's a reason, tho, for those bracelets with cordage and fishing line, a fire started, and a whistle embedded in them, and for strapping things to your body, under your clothes, for basic survival.
@@christinamenhennett well there is a reason why there was no season started yet. Rivers are still to icy. That's why they were there alone. You do not go somewhere unsafe with your elderly dad. He probably learned his lesson. I understand this was youthful inexperience. And the dad did not want to go alone like that. He should have refused. But I guess they both are very adventurous. Many adventures can bring to disaster.
Most of these incidents are so avoidable
I've read their story on readers'digest and now I can actually see and hear them retell their story. They are very lucky to be alive
Blake: I live in Oklahoma and underestimate the Alaskan wilderness, and I'm going to take my 65 year old dad 60 miles out into the Alaskan bush to go on a trip that he's not even comfortable with. He'd rather go on a guided tour, but who needs those. I got this.
He lived in Alaska. He moved to Oklahoma AFTERWARD, to He closer to his parents. He owed them that, I think.
That son was pure stubborn and dumb to put his father in that situation.
And arrogant.
He didn’t do it on purpose it was an unpredictable accident..it’s not like he wanted his dad to get killed, and besides if they stayed out they never would’ve been found sometimes you have to make hard choices to get out of trouble.
“Once past the river, it should be a straight forward hike to Betels.” Yeah, an almost 60 mile hike with no supplies through grizzly and wolf-filled wilderness.

Nice to see it brought them closer together, moving his family to be closer to his parents, he really realised what they meant to him.

I wouldn´t have left my dad, that´s for sure. And I am not judging either. But I would have build a sort of stretcher snd dragged him after me.

I'm thinking the pilot who was paid to fly them in, should have known about the ice still being there and refused?
wouldn't trust him to be my dr.
Great episode! The acting and footage on all these shows is amazing.
In a way they kind of were negligent the rafting season didn't start for several more months until the ice melts. The dad was hesitant but the sun blew it off and said we'll be fine.
If it weren’t for tear jerkers like this how would we even know we were still alive .. still… so beautiful how they can. Capture and relocate reality , it’s also crazy how reality is stranger than fiction I can’t even begin to imagine the fear one would experience being pulled under an ice sheet with my dad away from our kayak .. nothing scarier actually than being pulled away from he who raised you with love against your will .. nature can be cruel but the human spirit insurmountable
Nature does not like to be challenged. If rafting season has not started then there is a reason for that!
@@natalijaasbjornsen8827 it seems like they didn’t know that the season hadn’t started (they said they thought it was luck that they were the only ones out there). In my opinion, the pilot who flew them out should’ve warned them.
Really lucky he went for help without his walk to the river the plane wouldn’t have noticed him and they would have just deteriorated. Sometimes staying put can be deadly glad they made it
I think the season was about to start in two weeks? They had water, they probably could find some slugs to eat etc. I am sure they could catch some fish or make traps. There were worse situations in other episodes where people did not have any water or food or fire
Agreed. Some are just too painful to watch… They could call this one “Dumb and Dumber” go camping.
Lol 😂😂😂
So he didn't listen to his dad from the get go and they go rafting, when they get stranded and both almost die he takes his dad to the mountain and leaves him there (not listening again) and chills by the stream while his pops almost gets killed by the fire
As a daddy’s child this definitely hit hard. I can’t imagine having to leave my dad, hurt, cold and alone like that. I honestly would’ve rather died with him than risk him dying alone.
That was what I thought while watching him leave his dad but he had to make a choice and it was a part of it
One never knows whats really in someone's mind$$
Same here I love my dad because his very kind person

As much as I enjoy these series ( and pat myself on the back for loving the safety of home)I am shocked how so many people wish to risk their lives .
I think the same way. people don’t think of the what if?? the don was thinking more of his adventure then his dad.
I often wonder about why people put their lives at risk.
Heart-wrenching story I cried through the whole time
Son was a bit selfish - not taking in to account his father's age and desire for guided trip.
Because he just wanted to be with him to bond just the two of them, without a crowd.

I remember seeing this, tore my heart out. But what great acting and directing. Glad they made it!!
The one thing that these shows have taught me is that the person who goes off to look for help is the only reason they ever live lol. It's seriously like every show, they only live because someone took the chance to risk the danger.

Also, this made me cry.
One of the best episodes of " I shouldn't be alive " so heart touching story..... 🙏❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Well, so many mistakes can be made by the uninitiated or those who don't think about risks a bit ahead. The accident was just due to unfamiliarity, which could happen to a lot of people, even those with experience and preparation. But people should always carry a sidearm and some extra ammo, a fire making source, a knife, some cord and a few other very basic survival tools, not in their rafts, backpacks or other bags but on their person... it makes losing the rest of your gear less dire and makes survival easier which improves survival odds. Of course it's possible you can lose some or even all of your personal carry gear if you fall into a raging river, but it's harder to lose gear that's on you than gear that is not. It was a terrible misfortune that younger man lost his footwear, but with some basic tools that could have been addressed much easier than without. A sidearm also would also help scare away bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars, etc and help to take down an animal for food as a last resort, though I'd prefer to save my ammo to deal with possible predators, especially at night, when you might only hear them coming but never see them... a loud bang might be just the thing you need to keep you from getting eaten by something. Lastly, I don't know who told the commentator that the number 1 rule of survival was "staying together" which is absolutely ridiculous. You stay together if you can and if is in the best interest of your situation. However, in my opinion the number one rule of survival should be to always be prepared, which should include having at least a basic emergency plan, but the actual number 1 rule of survival is to stay put and wait for rescue, which is obviously not always a smart or feasible option. These men are beyond lucky they survived this!
My number 1 survival rule is to stay the f*k home.
@a nu start yum lol
If the season has not started yet, there is a reason for that. That's why they were alone there

Love these episodes
O i love this story. Thsnks. And goodluck you two.
They had been on the river only a couple of hours when the accident happened so wouldn't it be shorter to go back where you started? I don't know what their speed was but let's say 10 mph times 2 hours is 20 miles.
Wow, what an experience!
Blake is a doctor and made pisspoor preparations...
Thought the same thing
Actually he brought most of the stuff you need. Just it all got lost in river, which seems to be case with a lot of these survival situations. I could fault him on lack of communication. Yet, I doubt cell phones were available when this happened. Even if they were, I doubt they'd have cell phone reception that far out in the wilderness. My main fault with Blake was his lack of knowledge of the river current. Yet sometimes that's all it takes. One slip up and next minute you are in a life or death situation.
Oh and one other fault, did they really have to travel that far away from civilization to go hiking? At least if something happened, you wouldn't have to hike 60 miles to the next town.
@@Paul-hw7kc Part of the preparation would have been research into the area and the best time to make such a trip.

This makes me think of my own father and my elderly mother. Who went through the Vietnam war with 6 kids in tow. Respect and love the elderly even those with dementia. They are someone’s parents.
How was this filmed!?? Wow!! I couldn't imagine the terror when they came up in the air bubble.
While camping in Banff National Park in 1979 our camper was attacked by a grizzly. I thought it was going to cause our small camper to tip over. In the end nobody got hurt and the only thing eaten was our food, which we kept in a cooler outside intentionally just for this reason. Never have food inside of your tent or camper or predators will try to get in after it.
Rememder touring the Grand Canyon via helicopter and was in awe and wonder.. far less to be actually in there hiking and adventure.. I gotta be crazy
Next time go on a guided trip with other people. Then you can relax and meet new people.
@a nu start - Maybe you might get lucky and meet a hot lady pervert who wants to cast her perversions on you?
I would be terrified to think of a parent getting torn apart by a grizzly bear. No way I would set it up so we even inch our way out together, keep hunting with the knife, keep the fires going and fresh water all around. I would not leave an elderly parent alone.
Yeah i was flabbergasted at first when i saw he left his dad. They could've hike short distances and take rest from place to place light a fire find some food and then keep going.
Especially because the fire could have been destroyed by rain.
65 is older, NOT "elderly". Yeesh.

This should be a movie called ... trapped under regret
Blake is to stubborn and dosent respect his fathers opinions. Accidents happen but his stubbornness is too much.
This is beyond stubbornness. I hate saying it but his actions and blatant disregard for his father's safety and well being is a little suspicious to me.
Completely agreed. Just went rushing off without bothering to make sure his dad had a food or water source or way to defend himself!!! At least make a spear come on.
Hiked well away from the river for no reason at all and just ditched his dad in the woods!
