*sunflower oil (has more linoleic than oleoic) *grapeseed oil *coconut oil (not very occlusive, but good as a makeup remover - not very good on its own) *safflower seed oil - skin barrier repair *argan oil *avocado oil *borage oil *jojoba oil *sweet almond oil *rosehip oil - high lionelic acid *shea butter - good to be included in moisturizer //plants oils are not pure substances //cold press is better //natural oils aren't always better //some skin conditions can be worsened with application of oils //she uses oils to remove makeup thank you so much for this! so many other channels influence us to buy all these oils with the promise that it can help our skin conditions and we can get better skin. I absolutely love how you taught us that just because they're natural oils doesn't mean they're always better :) I have been saving a lot of money since watching your channel ♡
great list! but im confused supposedly argan oil is great for repairing of skin barrier and that oleic acid is bad for skin barrier however argan oil is rich in oleic acid can u pls explain thank you
When you mentioned that olive oil actually worsens the skin barrier, it reminded me of a time when an esthetician advised me to buy a facial oil that had mostly olive oil, to fix my breakout. It cost $80, so thankfully I was too broke to make that mistake. Lol. Sigh.
Thulisile Madi My husband suffered from eczema he used to see the dermatologist countless times a year; I advised him to start using extra virgin olive oil, he takes it orally and applies it to his skin, since then he hasn’t visited the dr in over 2 years. So I kinda disagree with the Doc here..
I worked for a plastic surgeon & Dermatologist… I know about olive oil, but people will insist on dying on that hill and get upset if you mention anything negative about olive oil… usually people whose mother taught them to use it .
Hi there Andrea. Just coming back to rewatch many of your videos a year later. I also wanted to thank you. You, more than anyone, have single handedly transformed my skin care routine, in a positive way. I can not adequately express my gratitude for the time you devote to educate us on important skin care topics and ingredients. My life is better because of you. Bless YOU 🙏🏻
True. As a researcher myself. (Literally, I had tried a lot of oils) I concur with you. I don't think people when using products take into consideration the aging process. When we are young and healthy anything will do wonders. We don't even understand that is our body working with what we add to it. Sometimes the body will react negatively sometimes it won't. And bam! It only take one person with a positive comment about something for a person who had lost all hopes to try the product. Guilty! Now that I'm in my forties all I want is a quick result. One product wonder. Not to mention our lifestyle. Smoking, alcohol, lack of sleep etc. Detrimental to our skin.
I wish they would do studies on humans not animals. I’ll take one for the team. 😬. Coconut oil in the bath. OMG. It saves me from winter. Highly recommend.
63 year old black male with chronic dry skin. Aquaphor has worked well in the past but it’s too greasy. I like Nivea’s intense healing lotion and many other premium lotions, but none of them last more than 4 or 5 hours. I recently started using jojoba oil and have seen a vast improvement in my skin. It seems to have brought back the natural elasticity to my skin. And though it gives my skin a bit of a sheen, my skin does not feel oily or greasy like when I use aquaphor. I tend to use the jojoba oil with a quality lotion and it really has transformed my skin
Gamma linoleic Acid? As a kid they came up a lot, and so borage and evening primrose oils were recommended. Or is that less to do with moisturising properties?
@@Siegn_Lukas my understanding is that oleic oils are very rich, and feel nice and moisturising, but don't necessarily do much healing. and then there are linoleic and linolenic and it all gets too complicated for me! i've had eczema all my life, and gamma linoleic acids (i think) are particularly reparative for that, but i don't know why.
My favorite way to use oils is right before I take a shower to prevent dry skin after the shower (rosehip or squalane). By the time I'm done, most of the oil has been washed away and I can continue on with my skincare routine. It really helps!
Dr. Dray, thank you so much for breaking down all the skincare hype. I'm 52 and anytime I walk into a Sephora or Ulta I'm bombarded with skincare products and advice from the SA's. It's so overwhelming. It makes me very happy to know that I don't need a million steps in my skincare routine. I have extremely sensitive skin thanks to rosacea and a mild case of perioral dermatitis so many of these products sold in stores really irritate my skin even when they are touted for "sensitive skin". So far, Cereve has been the most non-irritating products I have found. I do enjoy mixing oils in with my moisturizer so it is very helpful to know the difference between what's good and what can harm.
Happy Valentines Day Dr. Dray. I appreciate you so much. I started using oils early in 2017. I was looking for the moisturizing effects everyone was talking about. I would apply it at night feeling like I had really done something good for my skin. When I would cleanse my skin in the morning I would find my skin just as dry as it was the night before. I would think it was just me. you have really opened my eyes to the fact that they are not penetrating my skin at all. You are saving me so much money. Thank You.
Barbara Cossentino The same thing happened to me. Oils alone actually worsened my dehydration. I love how Dr. Dray is debunking all the YT misinformation.
Actually there's too much videos on UA-cam about oil benefits and their kinds but what everyone actually need is a method for mixing different oils for great skin. I hope you'll make a video on it cause it's really is what everyone is looking for 😌
Oils never worked on my skin until I watched this video and did moisturizer+an oil (which I would have never done because I have oily skin) and my skin has become so much healthier and less oily for some reason. I just bought CeraVe face wash, I can't wait to try it!
Thank u soooo much for this video...and for saying that oils are NOT great for everyone..after i bought so many of them..being naive..youtube bought...going to my dermatologist only to hear to STAY AWAY from ALL oils due to my genetic acne condition!!thank you for informing all of us! YOU and your videos ARE ON FIRE!!!🔥
@@DrDrayzday Dr. Dray, What do you think about apple cider vinegar for hair scalp & skin benefits? It helped clear my skin using it as a natural toner.
I love your honest approach to sharing your knowledge on the myths behind the miracle oils that reverse aging. You’re simply the best! I always enjoy your commentaries.
I personally love hemp seed oil. Castor oil is too thick for me. Macadamia is said to have similar properties to our natural sebum so that is meant to be good. Not a doctor here but have my own thoughts on these. Alas, castor oil is the cheapest of these and not my favourite.
My personal favorites are rose hip, jojoba, and raspberry seed oil (not mentioned in the video). Contrary to popular belief, raspberry oil CAN NOT be used as sunscreen but it has a lot of other great benefits!
The only oil that's ever really done anything for me was grapeseed oil. When I was pregnant with my son about 6 years ago, I developed pretty bad eczema on the tops of my thighs. Never had eczema before so I had to research what I even had. I tried about 6 different creams including my favorite cerave cream. The only thing that worked was just straight grapeseed oil. I used it twice a day and by day three it was gone! I used it every night while I was pregnant just to make sure it didn't flare up again and I've never had an issue with it again.
Love jojoba oil at our house. It is great at healing mild urine/poo burn on my kids - put a drop on them (on the front which runs down to the back) and by the next day they are usually 100% healed.
I use high GLA’s on wet skin after a shower. It really seals in the moisture and builds the collagen... I don’t even dry off first... I just push the extra water off as I rub on the oils, which I mix myself... I just recently added Argan oil to the mix and it seems to make the oils soak in even faster than the jojoba oil does alone... After that soaks in and I’m dry, I spread on some body butter made with the same oils whipped with shea butter and cocoa butter... that creates a barrier that keeps my skin moist... My oil mixture is equal parts jojoba, avocado, almond, apricot kernel and kukui nut oils (and now argan) plus rosehip seed, carrot seed, evening primrose, borage and vitamin E oils in equal parts...
Tried it. Since then, seeing how it helped my dry skin keeps me from ordering it on a monthly basis. I just so love the result, i have tried a lot of argan oils already but this ESSENCE OF ARGAN is i would say the LEGIT one.you would see the difference in just a month. So imagine how helpful this product is once you regularly use it.
“Any oil is hydrophobic, including the oils that your face produces, which means that they’ll keep water from escaping. And that in turn keeps your skin hydrated. “Hydration is really a function of water balance, so oils help hold water in and prevent the environment from stripping water out,” Tyler Hollmig, M.D., director of Laser and Aesthetic Dermatology at Stanford Health Care, tells SELF.”
320Kad she loves Shea butter but thinks that would clog pores ... I don’t believe that cause ALOT of acne prone skins use it and swear by it. She also doesn’t mention that companies pay scientist to check their oils especially high end brands that make them. Some oils actually have natural spf in it and the bottles are colored or darkened to prevent spoiling. Oils also have a expiration date on them most last 2+ years.
I've used plant oils, coconut, olive, grapeseed, and rose hip primary on my skin for years. But after a bad but of wind burn from a particularly cold blustery winter storm in NYS, I found that it wasn't helping. It felt almost irritating to my damaged skin. I switched to using cerave cleaner and facial lotions with excellent results. Now I use my stock of oils for removing makeup and on my hair ends. I find that double cleansing to remove my heavy makeup and heavier sunscreen works best. My skin feels soft and not stripped, and all traces of goop are off my face. And I don't break out. When I do get a pimple, it doesn't last as long on the face or skin this way. I had such good results from using oils as a first step in cleaning my face, that I started using this method on my body. Why not? I wear sunscreen everywhere, especially in summer. And it's helped to get rid of my body acne. I think it's because sunscreen is hard to wash off without stripping skin. Oils break up the sunscreen without scrubbing. Then the body wash has to clean off the oil before it reaches your skin, so it can't strip the skin of natural skin oils as much. I prefer olive oil on my face, coconut for lips and lips sticks that stain, and grapseed, which isn't as oily, on my body. Don't want to fall in the shower. My skin doesn't have any body acne, no severe winter dryness, no dry or oily patches. It feels like my skin is better able to absorb moisturizers and serums. I never feel tight skinned anymore. I realized this about 6 weeks ago. To have you verify this with this vlog means alot. I also use oil in facial masks. Honey and oil, the oil I use depends on the season and the dryness of my skin. 20 minutes on, then wash off. Not rinse. I use my cerave cleanser. I use my rosehip oil alot for this. All in all, changing how I use oil, from a leave on treatment or moisturizer to a cleansing agent has worked wonders.
In Africa, you must use a skin care cream. My skin does tan but, I've used Shea butter-and Cocoa butter, as an 'aftersun' care routine. Thank you for all the information about plant oils. Great video!
Emily Rachel Gilley that's literally one of the worst oils for your face bar none because of its clogging factor. Sqalane or jojoba are probably the best
OMG @Emily Rachel Gilley.. I lubed my scalp with that evil substance one night for an overnight "deep conditioning' treatment, and woke up in the middle of the night with my head on FIRE! On fire and itching like mad. I had to wash my hair 3 times. Then - of course :), I did it again, just in case it was a bad batch of oil.... same thing. All I hear are people raving about it... I will not have that stuff anywhere near my body :) :)
Angela Martorano it just proves once again we are all different! Coconut oil has been a godsend for me and my children. When I share my success with it to friends, I always tell them they could have an adverse reaction. But you and I are lucky! 😀
50 yrs of dealing with eczema off and on, as well as multiple docs, and this lady helps me sort it all out in one video! I swore some of those oils made me worse...could've avoided a lot of cost and trial!! Thanks again Dr. Dray...you're awesome!
OMG! Thank God i found you. Now i dont have to repurchase my oils which really are expensive here. I love your videos. Please dont stop helping us. I love you for that. God bless you 😘😘
I am currently using a brand called "Be Transcendent Skin" which is a plant-based skincare line. Some of the ingredients in their night time serum include: - Babassu Oil - White Willow Bark - Geranium Oil And their Day moisturizer includes: - Safflower Oil - Black Currant Oil - Clary Sage Oil - White Beeswax What do you think about these ingredients?
It’s so moisturizing! My skincare friend recommended it and I put it on in the evening. It’s amazing how my skin feels in the morning. I’ve used coconut, avocado, castor, and almond oil for full body moisture. Now I’m going to use more of the ones Dr. Dray recommends.
Merry Christmas Dr Dray! Since watching your videos I’ve retired all the scented oils I used to use on my face, which smelled great but were irritating - and just use Cerave, plus Tretinoin. My skin is no longer something I have so much anxiety about. Thank you for all your research, answering all the questions and the work you do! You are empowering a lot of people.
Can’t thank you enough for this information! I’m a little confused now though. After watching this I was prompted to conduct some research into what components are actually necessary to moisturize the skin. I found that a moisturizer needs to contain a humectant, occlusive agent, and an emollient/s. Some sites indicated that certain oils CAN form an occlusive barrier, but in this video you mentioned that plant oils on their own can not form that occlusive barrier. Now maybe that’s because what you’re saying is that oils on their OWN, outside of a moisturizer, are not occlusive but inside a moisturizer they can be?
For me- Best oil for me hands down- Josie Maran’s cold pressed organ oil. only thing I splurge on for my face. Every other argan oil breaks me out. Second runner up: NOW’s grapeseed oil.
This video deserves more views. Very good overview - lots that I knew, and even more things I didn't know. I wouldn't knock using pure oils - it is something of a personality thing I believe. I didn't care two figs about skincare in general (maybe dab a little diluted Tea Tree oil on an inflamed spot if it was painful), creams and lotions and moisturisers, bleh! Just a chore, very seldom a nice feeling at all. And exceedingly rarely any visibly positive results. But one ages... And when I was stocking up on my Tea Tree oil I picked up a bottle of Argan oil. And wow! It feels nice on the skin! I actually want to apply it! My face feels nice when I wake up. And my prickly forearms are finally almost smooth and even (as long as I remember to give them a few drops of oil now and then). Got my husband to use it on his very very dry old hands - ridiculous results within 2 days. So the Argan oil got me a bit interested in cosmetics in general - maybe these things aren't so bad and stupid after all. Branched out into pure Shea butter (elbows and feet and lips), and eventually actual cosmetic creams - nothing fancy, just something that feels nice and has _some_ SPF. But when I'm lazy I just reach for my Argan oil and smear a few drops on my face and wherever (pro tip: avoid pumps and go for droppers, a pump delivers way too much). The last point about oils probably being better as ingredients than straight up is well taken, but for some of us oils just suit our personalities better.
argan did nothing for me, tried several brands, organic bla bla bla and one bought from my friend from morocco. I like rosehip oil, nothing mindblowing, but I actually saw some results from this one. so some things go better for some people than for others.
Love coconut oil as a makeup remover also like using rosehip and jojoba oil in winter under my moisturiser it just seems to add that bit extra. I find thick moisturisers seem to break me out so I find this method works better for me 😊
I tried using oils on my face for awhile. They didn’t do anything for me. After hearing what they can and can’t do on skin, I understand why. Thanks for the great information!!!!
Green Tree I love the CeraVe too but my absolute favorite is the Cetaphil Redness Relieving Night Moisturizer. It’s being repackaged so I’m having a hard time finding it in stores. I hope it’s restocked soon! Thanks to Dr Dray I’ve learned that I don’t need 10 products or to spend a ton to have great skin. Glad her advice is helping you too:-)
What are the odds! Fortunately the moisturizer I use daily contains a bunch of the good safflower seed oil. No wonder I’ve seen such a difference in my acne scars! Linoleic acid is no joke when it comes up to healing and soothing.
Thank you! I've used many plant oils, and I know some have been really bad for my skin. It seems difficult to find valid information online about which plant oils are actually good. It would be awesome if you did a video on other natural/diy skin care methods and let us know which ones we should for sure avoid.
there really isn't alot of actual rigorous data to support good vs bad....we do have good data that sunscreen and fragrance free mineral oil/pet based moisturizers do support good skin health
I'm obsessed with skincare and let me tell you,I LOVE face oils.I used rosehip oil and I loved it,grapeseed oil as well and it makes me glow especially at night when I want to shine before I go to sleep. What do you think about cannabis oil,a lot of people say it's good for your skin,so what's your opinion?
Andrea, TY for this! I almost bought rose hip oil from Trader Joe's. I think I'll pass cause of fragrance factor. I've been using grapeseed oil once a week for facial massage. I press a warm damp towel over my face and neck, apply a dime-size amount of oil, massage it in, , and wipe off excess oil with a warm damp towel. It seems to deep clean my pores. Stubborn whiteheads soften. After a couple of days, a gentle washcloth cleansing exfoliates them away. I don't think of grapeseed oil as moisturizer. I use it as massage oil. I chose it because I had it in my pantry and it is supposed to be one if the least comedogenic oils. I have old acne scars and enlarged pores that clog easily.
0:45 Plant oils have bioactive compounds and constituents that can play a potential role and health, in biology and helping to restore skin barrier. They also contain anti-oxidants that can could help scavenge free radicals. 2:12 As moisturizers? They coat the skin and function as emollients; they do not penetrate the skin deeply nor are they occlusive. 4:00 Plant foils (fixed oils, the topic here) vs. essential oils (volatile at room temperature) 5:00 Linoleic (vs. oleic) fatty acid can restore skin barrier and prevent water loss 6:15 Olive (oleic acid) is not good applied to the skin 6:55 Sunflower soil (linoleic acid > oleic) 8:20 Grapeseed oil, some success in animal studies 8:57 Coconut oil (oleic > linoleic), good makeup remover, not a particularly good moisturizer 11:30 Safflower seed oil (70% oleic) 12:20 Argan oil (on hair, like any oil, could help with breakage) 13:45 Avocado oil (on small animal studies, wound healing and increase collagen production) 14:00 Borage oil (slow water loss) 14:25 Jojoba oil (best studied oil) 14:45 Sweet almond oil (helps dry skin itch) 15:15 Rosehil oil (linoleic acid, 35%-53%), 16:00 Shea butter (well tolerated) 17:10 Summary Oils work well as makeup/sunscreen remover or included in a moisturizer.
@@Anna-ug8cq I know this is an old comment, but I noticed less bumps. Maybe because the oil helped prevent my skin from drying up? I applied it on wet skin
I usually break out with oils, but didn’t realize it could be due to my fragrance allergy. The oil I see most on You Tube is cacay oil, it has more antioxidants than rose hip seed oil, and is said to be a natural Retin A. But I couldn’t find any studies on anti-aging, other than a small study by the company selling it. Plus, I wondered if the reduction of wrinkles shown in the study could be similar to a good moisturizer. I would like to try it on my neck, but not sure I want to deal with a product that degrades easily. As always, thanks for the detailed information!
Natural product do not have consistency with every batches It's natural. Sometime batches have different ratio of fats. It is just better to stick to petroleum artificial products.
There's someone on here who raves about rose hip oil. I've heard it is used in place of a retinol. She claims her skin has never looked better & from her before & after pictures I see a big difference. She looks much more youthful. Anyone else?
Kathy, my reply didn't go through. What is GLA oils? I haven't much money but bought the rosehip oil. How do you use it? At night? I am using Retin-A. Tried Cacao Oil, very greasy, but heard it was stronger in Vit, A. Thanks for any help.
barbarac102 High GLA oils are the ones that Dr Dray described as being high in linoleic acids.. these have high Gamma Linoleic Acids, which are even better fatty acids... these are rosehip oil, borage oil, carrot seed oil, etc... jojoba oil, avocado oil, almond oil and other oils high in regular linoleic acids are often used as carrier oils for the GLA’s, helping to transport them deeper into the skin... most of these oils have vitamin E and some have vitamin C, as well... I have been using these oils for 30+ years and I am now over 60 and have NO wrinkles. I have a bit of sagging because I haven’t been using retinoids but I don’t have a single wrinkle anywhere... so they absolutely do work. I have used them successfully, despite having rosacea, and have never had an issue. I have just started using Differin to combat some skin thickening on my nose, tho ( a complication of rosacea), so we’ll see how that goes... I am also contemplating trying out freshly home made vitamin C serum to combat the sagging... We’ll see what effect that has...
I had been afraid of using oils and the double cleanse method because I was afraid of acne. You inspired me to try it when you had a vlog about the Hada Labo cleansing oil, now I really like it.I just started my second bottle and I have a spare bottle so I don't run out. Thanks for the list of oils.
❤️🙏🏻 Happy Valentines Day Dr. Dray 🙏🏻❤️. You are a rock star! My skin has made a dramatic transformation since following your advice. Mitigating trans epidural water loss is life changing! My skin is so incredibly soft and the wrinkles are less visible. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge. Much respect and love to you. ❤️
Hi Sandra, I also follow Dr. Dray tips avoiding transepidermal water loss, by applying my moisturizer immediately after wash my face with the same results, that's priceless.
Hi Maria. I do the same for my face and body, but on my face I layer a few things and the results are blowing my mind! Water, a few drops of hyaluronic acid, a bit more water tapped on, cerave lotion, then an occlusive like Eucerin. I think I may start skipping the Eucerin or use it every other day, because my skin is completely hydrated now and the occlusive I don’t think is no longer necessary. I’m over 45, in a very dry winter climate, and my skin has never felt better! After one night of the new steps, my face was like a babies butt in the shower the next morning. I truly was amazed. I use to pile on expensive products, oils, etc and none of them resulted in the kind of improvement I have now. And I owe it all to Dr. Dray ❤️👍🏻
Thank you for this video, Dr. Dray!! I have dry skin and used to slather coconut and other oils on my face and noticed it didn't seem to truly moisturize my skin. My friend said I was crazy and wrong, so I used even more at night with no result. I kept saying, I think coconut oil is to big to penetrate skin, but couldn't find any proof of my claim. I'm NOT crazy (well, maybe still a little, lol!!) But, nonetheless, I am armed with more great knowledge each time I watch your videos. Hydroboost to a wet face and cetaphil have been incredible. Thanks!! You're truly an inspiration!!
Hi Dr Dray! Love your videos 💘 If you use oil in order to wash off makeup, the time oil spends on your skin is seconds. How do you think, maybe this is not enough for molecules in oil to do their job in scavenging free radicals, penetrating between skin cells, help restore skin barrier, etc? From chemical perspective, all these processes are not fast reactions that can happen within seconds. So maybe using pure oil is useless if you can't leave it on the skin? Please like this question so Dr Dray can see it 🙏
This was also very helpful! I love cold-pressed rose hip seed oil, but now that i know it cant really penetrate the skin to moisturize i will adjust the amount that i use. thank you for the info!
Coconut oil on my face is literally the only thing that makes me break out; I asked an esthetician, she said the molecules are too big to penetrate pores, so they sit on top & clog pores. If I use it it’s only for my body.
Tamanu doesn't have an incredibly high linoleic acid content. and is a bit sticky and thick-ish. Not ideal for acne prone folk - at least not applied all over the face. I've experimented a bit with this....even Liah Yoo suggests to only use Tamanu as a spot treatment. (for acne, dark spot, etc) Hope that helps.
@@tamupari1230 what brand do you use as I have been using the same brand from my Indian Grocers but I've had the same bottle for about six or seven years now and I think it's going stale
I've been a devoted fan of ShiKai's Borage Therapy lotion for years. It has Safflower, Jojoba, and Borage oils as well as aloe and dimethicone, which I believe Dr. Dray mentioned is a great occlusive. And no fragrance!
Dr Drey can you talk about plasma injections? The one that takes your blood, put it into a machine that spins to separate blood from plasma in order to inject the plasma into your face? It is used to rejuvenate. I know ppl that healed even their pimples!
Carolina Prexl it's called PRP platelet rich plasma. It can be injected into various areas of the face similar to the way fillers are for example under the eyes. But it can also be applied topically alone or in conjunction with some sort of microneedling which creates open channels for the PRP to better penetrate to the area where collagen is stimulated by this process. Additionally it can be injected into the scalp to stimulate hair growth at the follicle. It's relatively new in Dermatology but also has been used orthopedics and pain management to help heal chronic injuries to tendons and the like. It seems possibilities are limitless but it is still new so the research studies are ongoing. Insurance does not pay for any of these treatments it is all self pay and can be pretty expensive. A PRP video would be cool Dr. Drey!
Hi Andrea.. great video as usual :) Had a hard day at work today, got a blowout on my car tyre going to work; was late and had to do a presentation; then came back home and the chickpea burgers I made for the family were distinctly unimpressive... I have come upstairs to have some me-time and watched my daily dose of you... I'm smiling again, and glad to know that my behaviour toward oiling up my moisturiser with rosehip oil to help my extremely dry skin has just had a reprieve..(Usiing my CeraVe package received from iherb :} All is good in the world again..... Heather x
Dr Dray why is sunflower and grape see oil hated by so many doctors then? A lot of doctors and experts are saying that they cause inflammation becaue of the unnatural way they are processed. 100 years ago those 2 oils did not exist until companies started processing and selling them. What's your take on that?
Great video on oils; thank you! My love of oil may be more of habit rather than any actual benefit. I have used rosehip oil for years and it seemed to make my super oily skin become normal skin. Now, years later I have dry skin, but I still use oil. I use it in between two moisturizers (Neutrogena Hydroboost and Cereve PM. My skin is just use to having it!!
I was always taught that the reason oils cannot moisturize is because they contain no water. Why spend money on a product that is not going moisturize, which is what you wanna do, the skin? Keep up the good work Dr. Dry😊
Liz Earle’s Superskin Moisturiser contains cranberry, borage and rosehip seed oils. It’s working well as a night cream for my sensitive skin. I use it on alternate nights from my tretinoin. It seems to calm my skin down.
Paula’s choice oil booster mixes ceramides in with it and no fragrant oils. Also they claim it’s a “booster” so you SHOULD mix it with a moisturizer as a boost. I enjoy it a lot. :)
I know you LOVE ceramides. Garnier Fructis as an Apple blah d blah shampoo and conditioner with contains ceramide. Is that a marketing gimmick or is there a role for cersmides in hair care? FYI, it smells yummy.
I was looking at the Mad Hippie Antioxidant oil blend, and it's loaded with antioxidant-rich oils and various plant extracts to make it seem like you're getting this anti-aging, nourishing product (I immediately ruled out buying it because of the sweet orange oil anyway). But as you were saying, the oils aren't even penetrating the skin well enough for the antioxidants to possibly have any real effect. I tend to steer clear of products like that which contain so many ingredients because I'm afraid my skin will react to something and I won't know what's causing it. I used to exclusively use plain oil to moisturize my face because I was under the impression that "all natural" is always better. I slathered myself in different oils throughout my life thinking I was treating my skin so well, when it reality, it wasn't doing me any good, and was probably harmful. Then again, I was young and had good skin anyway, so I didn't really know the difference (except in the case of coconut oil, which congested my skin). My skin game has totally changed since I started taking the advice of actual experts instead of some internet "guru", and I'm never turning back.
Question about Olive Oil: what if the company says its “naturally derived” and it’s very low on the ingredient list- is it still enough to harm the skin barrier? An example is Josie Maran’s Argan Cleansing Oil to remove makeup. Thanks in advance!
Ostana Sky im pretty sure that what dr dray means is that applying olive oil alone as a moisturizer is not a good idea but if a product has olive oil in it (example a moisturizer) then it wouldn’t cause harm
Just rewatched this after making the terrible mistake of leaving coconut oil on my face! Ouch! I don’t know why I did it...I’ve heard you say a million times about not leaving oils on the skin.
great take on oils i rly needed this! i can’t believe olive oil isn’t beneficial for skin my mediterranean ancestors are put to shame 😭 incidentally i was going through the ingredients of BIAFINE cream and one of the ingredients was avocado oil so i guess it is beneficial for wound healing! much love to you doc 💜
Thank you so much! I am going to make my own soap and I was using your videos as a guide for choosing the ingredients. I'm going to use sunflower seed, rosehip, argan, and grapeseed oils in my soap :)
It's quite impressive how you can understand and retain all of this knowledge. I find it quite tiresome to try and decipher scientific studies and then extrapolate their real life or clinical significance. On top of sifting through the garbage on the internet. Thank you for doing all that work and putting it into a clean concise summary video. The one thing I was hoping for though was how these oils are for oily acne prone skin. I've always stuck to "oil free" products but now I keep hearing that certain oils are not problematic for oily acne prone skin while others are. I specifically have heard /read that coconut oil clogs pores and can cause acne in certain skin types. I've been struggling with this since trying to find all fragrance free and oil free products for everything I use. I think my hair products are breaking me out from their oils in them. Free & clear shampoo & condition makes my hair feel awful and might as well just cut it all off! I know it's different for everyone but isn't there general tolerance for certain oils for acne then others? Thanks Also, is it specifically plant oils that cause potential allergic Reactions or sensitivities? I hear you say this a lot about botanical ingredients but does that include the cocobenatine in the many cleansers ? What makes these plant ingredients problematic or allergenic?
the questions you hope for answers have no solid answers yet...despite what the cosmetic industry pushes at you...we honestly don't know; as far as plants being problematic....our immune system does not like them on the skin and with long term use it can retaliate against them

So is oil in general good for the body vs lotion is what I’m trying to understand
Thank you!
*sunflower oil (has more linoleic than oleoic)
*grapeseed oil
*coconut oil (not very occlusive, but good as a makeup remover - not very good on its own)
*safflower seed oil - skin barrier repair
*argan oil
*avocado oil
*borage oil
*jojoba oil
*sweet almond oil
*rosehip oil - high lionelic acid
*shea butter - good to be included in moisturizer

//cold press is better
//natural oils aren't always better
//some skin conditions can be worsened with application of oils
//she uses oils to remove makeup
thank you so much for this! so many other channels influence us to buy all these oils with the promise that it can help our skin conditions and we can get better skin. I absolutely love how you taught us that just because they're natural oils doesn't mean they're always better :) I have been saving a lot of money since watching your channel ♡
thanks for the list!
Thankyou so much. This comment of urs deserve a lot of likes😁
Thanks so much for posting this summary!
great list! but im confused supposedly argan oil is great for repairing of skin barrier and that oleic acid is bad for skin barrier however argan oil is rich in oleic acid can u pls explain thank you
Coconut oil is the best for skin
@disney 2 but it does clog pores
@@maningimncwabe9015 she said olive oil, not virgin olive oil. 2 kind of oils are different. 😁
@@nadiramirae wait what bout cold compressed olive oil
@@maningimncwabe9015 yeah, I think it depends with individuals, I can't use olive on skin because it's not good for me but I do take it orally
Bless YOU 🙏🏻
Thanks! So glad to hear and thank you for watching
Tracy lol tried that before and could barely get out of the tub 😂

Coconut oil breaks me out so bad! Happy it works for you though!
Linoleic good, Oleic bad got it😊
:)
Gamma linoleic Acid? As a kid they came up a lot, and so borage and evening primrose oils were recommended. Or is that less to do with moisturising properties?
Liah yoo said that higher oleic acid is good for dry skin
While higher linoleic acid is good for oily skin
@@Siegn_Lukas my understanding is that oleic oils are very rich, and feel nice and moisturising, but don't necessarily do much healing. and then there are linoleic and linolenic and it all gets too complicated for me! i've had eczema all my life, and gamma linoleic acids (i think) are particularly reparative for that, but i don't know why.
Shoot, doesn’t rosehip seed oil have Oleic acid as well as Linoleic?
My favorite way to use oils is right before I take a shower to prevent dry skin after the shower (rosehip or squalane). By the time I'm done, most of the oil has been washed away and I can continue on with my skincare routine. It really helps!
This is a great tip, thank you so much!
you could do the exact thing for mineral oil, at a fraction of the cost
I do this to the ends of my long hair before showering. Then when I shampoo the scalp and wash the ends don’t get too dry.

How about castor oil? What advice can you say about using this?
I do enjoy mixing oils in with my moisturizer so it is very helpful to know the difference between what's good and what can harm.
cerave is a far better bet than sephora
Dray is debunking all the YT misinformation.
thanks!
:)
Can't wait to do so, what moisturizers do you use?
Do you mix your moisturizer with your oil before applying or moisturize first then drop oil on your face?
What kind of oil did you use?
Thank u soooo much for this video...and for saying that oils are NOT great for everyone..after i bought so many of them..being naive..youtube bought...going to my dermatologist only to hear to STAY AWAY from ALL oils due to my genetic acne condition!!thank you for informing all of us! YOU and your videos ARE ON FIRE!!!🔥
Thanks :) Hope you have a great weekend :)

@@DrDrayzday doctor would have been good if you could have been cluded marula oil and also hemp seed oil.... also neem oil
I use borage oil, grape seeds oil, avocado oil and coconut oil for my skin... love them...
Wow loved it
i tried essence of argan oil for my skin and it's an amazing product it reduced dark spot ,acne and fine lines
Hi doctor. What's your take on:
Macadamia nut oil
Hemp seed oil
Castor oil
:)
What does this prove? I mean, what is the point of this?
Florina Simion ... just showing how oils help your skin. For any one doubting them.
18:34 she mentions how oils can become allergens and cause rashes. So should oil only be used as a cleanser as opposed to leaving it on overnight ?
320Kad she loves Shea butter but thinks that would clog pores ... I don’t believe that cause ALOT of acne prone skins use it and swear by it. She also doesn’t mention that companies pay scientist to check their oils especially high end brands that make them. Some oils actually have natural spf in it and the bottles are colored or darkened to prevent spoiling. Oils also have a expiration date on them most last 2+ years.
I found this lady disliking almost everything.
I have no clue, but I use argan oil mixed with my moisturizer and I’ve seen a huge difference. It’s been good for me.
All in all, changing how I use oil, from a leave on treatment or moisturizer to a cleansing agent has worked wonders.
glad to hear :)
She really said “k” 🤣🤣
In Africa, you must use a skin care cream. My skin does tan but, I've used Shea butter-and Cocoa butter, as an 'aftersun' care routine. Thank you for all the information about plant oils. Great video!
Coconut oil breaks me out so horribly. :(
Emily Rachel Gilley that's literally one of the worst oils for your face bar none because of its clogging factor.

Marula Oil is my favorite for my skin 💗
It’s so moisturizing! My skincare friend recommended it and I put it on in the evening. It’s amazing how my skin feels in the morning. I’ve used coconut, avocado, castor, and almond oil for full body moisture. Now I’m going to use more of the ones Dr. Dray recommends.
I use Sunflower Oil for facial massage.
I also plan to switch to Jojoba Oil.
Yes! this beats a box of chocolates any day! Happy Valentines Day Dr. Dray! :)

@@DrDrayzday also I left out two more one is apricot seed oil cold-pressed and also cold press walnut oil
I find thick moisturisers seem to break me out so I find this method works better for me 😊
Thanks I have the same issue I am gonna try this method

Yay! I'm not crazy. Coconut oil and Olive oil both irritate my face! Interesting info on the Argan for the hair.

I started using jojoba oil on my hair and face and it’s amazing
how do u use it and in which weather.. as it broke me out though it is quite pricey and pure

4:00 Plant foils (fixed oils, the topic here) vs. essential oils (volatile at room temperature)
5:00 Linoleic (vs. oleic) fatty acid can restore skin barrier and prevent water loss
6:15 Olive (oleic acid) is not good applied to the skin
6:55 Sunflower soil (linoleic acid > oleic)
8:20 Grapeseed oil, some success in animal studies
8:57 Coconut oil (oleic > linoleic), good makeup remover, not a particularly good moisturizer
11:30 Safflower seed oil (70% oleic)

Hey Dr. Dray, can you please do a separate video on the benefits of Grape Seed Oil? Thanks.
As always, thanks for the detailed information!
you hit the nail on the head there with the selling point
Natural product do not have consistency with every batches It's natural. Sometime batches have different ratio of fats. It is just better to stick to petroleum artificial products.
There's someone on here who raves about rose hip oil. I've heard it is used in place of a retinol. She claims her skin has never looked better & from her before & after pictures I see a big difference. She looks much more youthful. Anyone else?
barbarac102 I swear by it and other high GLA oils...
What r GLA oils? Do u use retin-a or other retinols. Going out will answer when I can, thanks.
Ann Nee ok... Then why did both my grandmothers look like prunes at my age? And why do I look younger than all my friends?
I had been afraid of using oils and the double cleanse method because I was afraid of acne. You inspired me to try it when you had a vlog about the Hada Labo cleansing oil, now I really like it.I just started my second bottle and I have a spare bottle so I don't run out. Thanks for the list of oils.
i think oils are really helpful as cleansers in the double cleanse approach to remove makeup/sunscreen
so happy to hear!
Dray ❤️👍🏻
Thanks for sharing Sandra.xxoo
May i ask where can i find this video?

If you use oil in order to wash off makeup, the time oil spends on your skin is seconds.
Please like this question so Dr Dray can see it 🙏
Jojoba oil has been AMAZING for the eczema on my face.
This was also very helpful! I love cold-pressed rose hip seed oil, but now that i know it cant really penetrate the skin to moisturize i will adjust the amount that i use. thank you for the info!
:)
I use the one from The Ordinary too!
I think there is a lot of info out there on rose hip seed oil and how it can help. I have read a lot on it. I like it.
sprinkle how often u use it and do u use after mosturizer or b4...and wat kinda skin u hv
Coconut oil on my face is literally the only thing that makes me break out; I asked an esthetician, she said the molecules are too big to penetrate pores, so they sit on top & clog pores. If I use it it’s only for my body.
What about tamanu oil??
Tamanu doesn't have an incredibly high linoleic acid content. and is a bit sticky and thick-ish. Not ideal for acne prone folk - at least not applied all over the face. I've experimented a bit with this....even Liah Yoo suggests to only use Tamanu as a spot treatment. (for acne, dark spot, etc) Hope that helps.
Use neem oil it’s just the best oil king of all oil neem oil
@@tamupari1230 what brand do you use as I have been using the same brand from my Indian Grocers but I've had the same bottle for about six or seven years now and I think it's going stale
Thick, strong smell and doesn’t lighten dark spots as much as they say.
Drey!
Danae From The Bay Thankyou!
Carolina Prexl ive gotten this done in Colombia and is amazing!
The treatment is wonderful it works really good for my tendons.
Carolina Prexl i use it on my scalp and it cured my hair fall within the first month of using it, im on my 5th month treatment
Hi Andrea.. great video as usual :) Had a hard day at work today, got a blowout on my car tyre going to work; was late and had to do a presentation; then came back home and the chickpea burgers I made for the family were distinctly unimpressive... Heather x
sorry to hear it was a rough day Ms Heather
Yass Dr.Dray, back at it again with the great, valuable content! You never let us down. Thank you for taking time out of your day to educate us!
Thanks for watching!
Dr Dray why is sunflower and grape see oil hated by so many doctors then? A lot of doctors and experts are saying that they cause inflammation becaue of the unnatural way they are processed. 100 years ago those 2 oils did not exist until companies started processing and selling them. What's your take on that?
Watching this with my faced coated in olive oil... having mixed acne prone skin .. guess I am going to wash it off 😂
Haha..just massaged by hands and legs with olive oil...I guess even I need to wash it off😂😂😂
i just rubbed a handful of it into my scalp...
It's the worst!
Fruity Booty it’s really good for hair
Not everything she says it’s true. Olive oil is good
Great video on oils; thank you! My skin is just use to having it!!
thanks!
My mom has always used sweet almond oil on me (dry skin) and to me it is such a lovely oil. I also use baby oil (for both hair & skin).
baby oil also has fragrance
I was always taught that the reason oils cannot moisturize is because they contain no water. Why spend money on a product that is not going moisturize, which is what you wanna do, the skin? Keep up the good work Dr. Dry😊
Dray. I hate auto correct 😊
:)
What about hemp seed oil for acne prone skin?
It's a great one! Good in linoleic acid. That's the one that I use
What brands do you use?
Oh Wanya thank you!
Emily thank you! Awesome :)))
Liz Earle’s Superskin Moisturiser contains cranberry, borage and rosehip seed oils. It’s working well as a night cream for my sensitive skin. I use it on alternate nights from my tretinoin. It seems to calm my skin down.
Love this format. ESP listing details in description box.
Thank you so much :)
Paula’s choice oil booster mixes ceramides in with it and no fragrant oils. Also they claim it’s a “booster” so you SHOULD mix it with a moisturizer as a boost. I enjoy it a lot. :)
:)
I know you LOVE ceramides. Garnier Fructis as an Apple blah d blah shampoo and conditioner with contains ceramide. Is that a marketing gimmick or is there a role for cersmides in hair care? FYI, it smells yummy.
yes...the studies are in applying cermaides as mositurizers to dry skin...not shampoo or face washes
Avene soothing mask have safflower oil and it’s a very soothing product indeed, highly recommended to anyone who’s looking for a good mask
Thanks for sharing!
So informative, thank you. I just purchased several oils, darn.....looks like my Rose Hip will be the most beneficial to use.
My skin game has totally changed since I started taking the advice of actual experts instead of some internet "guru", and I'm never turning back.
that product is a time bomb
This is a great video! I love plant oils but found it hard to get information like this. Thank you!
Thanks!
great take on oils i rly needed this! i can’t believe olive oil isn’t beneficial for skin my mediterranean ancestors are put to shame 😭 incidentally i was going through the ingredients of BIAFINE cream and one of the ingredients was avocado oil so i guess it is beneficial for wound healing! much love to you doc 💜
biafene has fragrance though
Always excited when you upload!
:)
Thank you so much! I am going to make my own soap and I was using your videos as a guide for choosing the ingredients. I'm going to use sunflower seed, rosehip, argan, and grapeseed oils in my soap :)
Thank you for explaining JUST THE FACTS!
Very informative! Something about oils in skin care didn't feel right and didn't make sense. Thank you for shearing your knowledge!
Thanks!
thoughts on Black Seed Oil??
Thanks
Also, is it specifically plant oils that cause potential allergic
Reactions or sensitivities? I hear you say this a lot about botanical ingredients but does that include the cocobenatine in the many cleansers ? What makes these plant ingredients problematic or allergenic?
the questions you hope for answers have no solid answers yet...despite what the cosmetic industry pushes at you...we honestly don't know; as far as plants being problematic....our immune system does not like them on the skin and with long term use it can retaliate against them
Can anyone else appreciate Dr. Gray's cheat sheet? Lol. Very informative. Thank you! 💙
Best description box ever!!
Thanks!
Wow, 65k. Congratulations!
Thanks Ms Kathryn for all of your support. Hope you are having a great day :)
I just found out about your channel, and I am beyond impressed about your knowledge and brilliance. I am a fan for life!
Wow, thank you!
