Dr. Shereene Idriss also spoke out against using skincare products that contain hyaluronic acid. She said hyaluronic acid draws moisture from your skin, leaving your skin dry.
That’s because people confuse or simply don’t know the difference between dehydrated skin and dry skin. Dehydrated is lacking moisture, dry is lacking natural oils. So if you have naturally dry skin your skin doesn’t produce enough oils on its own. You can have oily, combo or dry skin and your skin be dehydrated at the same time because it’s lacking moisture aka water. Hyaluronic acid help skin to retain moisture not oils, therefore if your issue is truly dry skin then what you’re needing is oils to replace what you’re missing.
@@jacquelinew3881 Thank you for this! 💜 I have oily skin, but occasionally it gets dehydrated. HA helped getting the balance back. Esthetician told me that I have very dry skin, but I’m oily in T zone, so is that combination skin (T zone oily and cheeks normal/dry or completely dry) or am I just dehydrated?
Watched this a couple of weeks ago, I dumped the hyaluronic acid was using every day, I went full on with squalane oil and omg the difference is crazy. My skin is so much healthier it feels amazing to. Thank you so much you’ve saved my skin and wallet.
You're very welcome! I'm glad this video has been helping people ever since I made it. There's plenty more stuff on the channel and plenty more in the works too 😁
A agree, bought a 250ml bottle of pure olive oil squalane and love how it absorbs right in and gives me nice glow. Also I found no greasy heavy feeling with squalane.
I live in the humid tropical climate. I used to use only coconut oil, yet over time my skin turned really oily yet also rough on the surface. Then i started incorporating a HA toner (japan's Hada labo) and my skin felt moisturized and plump and the texture got better. Since i'm oily skinned i quit the coconut oil and only used the HA. If you live in humid climates HA actually works to hydrate.
Omggg same. My skin is still oily thanks to the hot and humid climate of SEA, but much better since I no longer have dry patches in some area thanks to HA. Judging from your username, are you from Indonesia?
Coconut oil is known to be drying and comodegenic. You could try Castor oil, raw shea butter, almond oil or jojoba oil. Castor oil has been a game changer. I had solar urtacaria bumpsfor a while which disappeared after 3 days of using Castor oil.
I live in a humid not tropical place and it’s the opposite for me. HA was the worst on my skin, making it even drier. I guess it really dependes where you live and how your body reacts to it
@@thehyatt straight castor oil is too thick for me and it's also quite drying. I've tried using it to thicken my eyebrows but it caused CCs. My fave oil so far is squalane

Glad I found your channel 🙂I have never stuck to any skin care routine. Have been starting to look into oils... Guess what ladies - nearly 70 now and not having a skin care routine hasn't resulted in lots of wrinkles! Nutrition plays a big part, as does sleep.
I completely agree with you. I am just starting a skin care routine, am 64, have eaten junk food and sweets my entire life and my skin looks pretty good. I don't know if it's good or not but people think I am in my 50;s.
Same here, no serious skin care routine. I just turned 74 and, except for laugh lines - which I don’t regret - I’m not at all wrinkly. I use black castor oil on my face and everyplace else to combat my dry itchy skin and absolutely love it. I haven’t put on so much at night though. I’m not sure if I can stand it but I’m going to try it.
This isn’t a video about moisturizer. It’s about hyaluronic acid. Moisturizers used to be good because they contained oils. Then they got on this “oil-free” kick, which makes no sense. Now I’m frustrated by it being extremely hard to find a product that does not have HA. When it first came out, it was always made clear that in dry air the ha will draw moisture from your skin. Somehow that quickly got ignored. Maybe I have to try oils now. It’s hard to find one that’s not irritating.
I just want to kindly point out - you answered your own question at the end of your comment. Many companies went “oil free” when consumers stopped using their products containing oils because the oils were blamed for acne breakouts, skin irritation, and other issues like seborrheic dermatitis(my mom was advised by her dermatologist to only use oil free products to control this condition and treats his directive like it’s gospel.) I’m curious if these products just contained poor quality oils or if there were other chemicals used in production that degraded the oils or caused problems on the skin and were overlooked as being the cause.
I started just using the ordinary plant squaline. It’s absolutely lovely. I’ve stopped using creams. I also use almond oil at night and on my hair. I wanted to just strip back to basics. Less products and chemicals. Love this advice.😊
In France we have so many of these moiturisers , we don't know what to choose from but my grand-mother, who was from the south of france, only ever used olive oil on her face, and a hat for sun protection, she had lovely skin up into her 80's.
@@td2222 Health organizations have stated that the natural SPF found in oils isn’t enough to keep you protected. If you need at least 30 SPF to have your skin shielded from UV radiation, know that olive oil only has an SPF of 8.

This is so true! Before I got into skincare 2019, I just used coconut oil and my skin was never dry and always looked good. I also started (and will never stop my tretinoin in 2019). I always get the best results with just tretinoin cream in the evening, sunscreen in the morning and cleansing in the evening. I think so much is based on the persons chemistry as well. When I’ve used things with HA they dry out my skin and I never understood why so many people love them! But if so many people swear by it I have to believe it must work for them.
When you've used the castor oil at night (after cleansing and retinoid) do you put a very thin layer of castor oil? I know it's pretty thick and sticky...how does it work for night time?
Okay my HA is going in the bin and I'm trying this. Many years ago I met an elderly lady who had the most beautiful skin I had ever seen ...... she told me she'd had skin cancer and on recovery the doctor told her to use Almond Oil on her face night and morning .... which she did ..... hence her gorgeous complexion. Thank you for this reminder Dr Abs.
I do actually live in a very humid climate! No not rainforest but air you can wear. Hyaluronic acid works great under my make up applie first to a damp face.
I live in an area classified as a temperate rainforest in the Appalachian mountains. I also put a serum with HA on damp skin every morning, then a moisturizer. Works great for my dry skin.
Moisturizing has reversed my wrinkles. Say what you want about it not working the way it’s intended, but when you put a cream layer on facial skin when it moves/stretches, it helps prevent those movements from creating fine lines. It’s the same idea as stretch marks.
I have been suffering from dry skin on my face ever since I gave birth. I used so many moisturisers and nothing worked. Saw this video and bought squalane from minimalist, sorted all my problems! Thank you for making this video!!!
First heard this concept around 3 years ago from a famous celebrity dermatologist in the Philippines named Dr. Vicky Belo and then recently from Dr. Shereene Idriss and now Dr. Abs. I love that derms are talking about this now coz I do feel it everytime I use a moisturizer with HA in it. It really makes sense! I love how Dr. Abs laid it all down for us in a super easy to understand way. Thanks, Doc!
I'm glad I found this video, I've almost never used moisturizing creams, and for 10 years or more I've been using only oils and various types of serums and I'm satisfied. I used to think that maybe it was bad that I didn't use moisturizing creams, but now I won't worry about it anymore. I never liked them, their smells or consistency usually irritated me. I look really good for my age.
Please please please do a video on very oily skin! I hate putting on any type of moisturisers on my face, but i still do because i am so confused about what I should use!
Great idea! Moisturizer doesn't necessarily improve oiliness either and there are different ways I get rid of oiliness for my patients (for very cheap too😉). I'll add it to the list and hopefully bring something out soon. Stay tuned 😊

Dear Dr Abs, I must say that you have the most beautiful skin! Wow! is there anything special or different skin products you would recommend for a woman with natural red hair? Of course, I think sun damage started with the terrible sun burns I got when I was a kid-my family is French and everyone else has the typical darker skin and hair. Any particular product you would recommend for us redheads?
Try applying HA on very damp skin. Like still dripping a little after cleansing. Work it in with the water and add more water if it feels tacky. Top with your favorite oil and your skin will be much softer and smoother.

Harvard Health also recommends treating dry skin by soaking it in water and then covering it in an occlusive (they mention Vaseline). Do you think there are any potential disadvantages to the skin by using occlusives like oil or petrolatum? I read a few studies online that concluded both prolonged occlusion and prolonged water exposure disrupted the stratum corneum and induced barrier damage. I wonder if something like squalane oil would be occlusive enough to have negative effects.
I wouldn't say squalane is a complete occlusive - only when you apply so much that it forms a thick layer. I personally recommend to my patients to apply a thin layer so that gaseous exchange can still take place and you're not blocking the skin like an occlusive. That way, were trying to mimic what nature intended for the skin as closely as possible.
I was doing this for years unintentionally with either coconut oil or castor oil. It really does make a difference. When my husband moved in with me manyyears ago now, he had adult acne and had struggled with it for years. I gave him coconut oil to try for a month. It worked and he hasnt had any issues since!!! I think all the crap he had been prescribed or tried had broken his skin barrier down. The oil rejuvenated it :)
Hey doc, please make a detail video about oily skin solutions. The whole skincare market is booming with advertisements and being a newbie in skincare world,it is getting too messy. Please do surely remember to make a video on oily skincare.
Thank you!! I've been saying this for a couple of years, but as I didn't have any scientific data to "back me up," nobody would listen to me. To me, it just made sense. I'd been slithering moisturiser on my face for decades (serums were introduced later) and my skin remained dry. I was told that HA was the answer to my concern - no, it wasn't. My skin became even drier! Out went the moisturiser and the HA, in came squalene, followed by castor oil. Result : NORMAL SKIN 😊❤❤
Glycerin also removes moisture from your skin if the exterior environment is incompatible. Glycerin is better if you use it in winter to pull moisture from the Aïr instead of your skin like in the summer.
I say this all the time... lack of hydration is lack of sebum on skin, oil, we need nourishing ingredients such as: lard, coconut oil, cocoa butter etc
castor oil for skin care should be organic come in a dark glass bottle and be hexane free Can be used with a carrier oil such as almond oil (dont use almond if you have nut allergy - almonds are drupes and related to nuts ) or olive oil can be used with it - use carefully as it is thick wash off gently after 20 minutes

Hi Dr. Abs great stuff! So glad I came across your channel! Can squalene oil be used for my whole body to replace body lotion? I have dry skin on my body and combination skin on my face. Your response will be very helpful & appreciated. Thank you
@@detraslaughter4770 Not quite. You can have dry or oily skin and still have your skin lacking moisture, hydration. Oils help replenish natural oils in your skin, that's why people with dry skin like using oils. But if your skin is dehydrated, regardless if it's oily or not you need to replenishes moisture, water not oils. In a few words, your skin is lacking natural oils, use oils, but if you lacking moisture use moisturizer with HA. If your skin is lacking both, oils ( dry skin) and moisture ( dehydrated), use both oils and HA moisturizer.
Thank you for this doctor God!! I have said over and over again moisturizer makes my skin dry especially hydraulic acid serums even with moisturizer and friends think i'm crazy!! Will definitely try an oil. Thanks so much!!
You have confirmed what I had suspected. Hyloronic acid and Vitamin b3 both dries the skin of sebum, thus it is more dry… Oils have been a great and cheap solution, because skincare products are typically loaded with the stuff, that dries the skin out…
You're so right about Niacinamide. It destroyed my protection barrier, making my skin so fragile n thin. It might be a good solution for oily skin type, but not for sensitive, reactive ect
I think people forget that our SKIN IS DESIGNED to protect us and keep out things like germs and other harmful stuff. It won’t absorb the products these big companies sell. Don’t get me wrong, it does absorb some things like topical medications, but this video is exactly right! I had oily skin that became dry. It was counterintuitive for me to put oil on my face because I had always been so oily. The oil on the outside keeps the moisture in. The same with hair. A tiny bit of oil on the strands keeps the moisture locked in.
I really hope you will answer my question and it is genuine. What is your opinion on snail mucin and topical Niacinamid. It became popular with all that south korean trend. Looking forward to your answer. Great work really. Sharing your Clips here in germany. Not using all those hyaluronic acid moisturisers anymore.
Snail mucin is a complete gimmick I think. Niacinamide can be a great ingredient. I think TheOrdinary do a great niacinamide powder that can be mixed with things. Danke schon :)
Very grateful for this video! I will be picking up the Squalane oil. I currently have castor oil- is that acceptable to use in the same way as well. At least for now. Thanks in advance for your response.
Should we be using oil for the rest of the body too or just the face? I’m 62, living in Chicago where we have both hot summers and cold winters. Recently turned to Palmers lotion and I feel it’s dried out my skin. What do you recommend??? Thank you!
I have used two bottles of castor oil and the results is super no side effects no acne super moisturised. And in India we have a lot of castor oil production so it's cheap and good.
I appreciate the no nonsense approach & scientific facts that show us the why and how so clearly. There are just too many fads that are unsupported by studies. Head scratches like HA or snail mucin that really did zero for me. Thank you for taking the time to educate us.

Thank you for the information. To keep my skin hydrated, I've been using rose and argan oil on my face for over fifteen years. Sweet almond and shea body oil, while my skin is still damp after having a shower and my skin has benefitted from it. It also helps that I've never smoked, have the occasional glass of wine🍷and drink a lot water.
Understand your skin is the key. Use whatever that helps your skin. I use HA and Vit C serum on damp skin followed by aloe gel moisturizer. Then sunscreen on it. In evenings, HA serum and then moisturizer and tretinoin at night or just basting my skin with diaper rash cream. Works wonders to my skin because mine is oily and dry. It doesn't need anymore oil but moisture. I follow Dr. Idriss advice but improvise because now I understand my skin better.

I love my moisturizer BUT speaking of oils, the best oil I’ve ever tried is the Moroccan cold pressed prickly pear oil. Heaven for skin! A friend brought it from Morocco and even there it’s quite expensive. They made it in front of her.
Damp skin absorbs oils and creams the best. When you lightly blot you still have water on your face and that’s good. If water is dripping the oils won’t stay. NEVER use the same face towel everyday. When I switched years ago to using a fresh face cloth every time my face was so much better acne wise etc. if you’re using the same damp towel for face, hair or body is not sanitary especially if you already have skin issues. Start a good routine. Face clothes are so inexpensive, please buy cotton ones not polyester. I think bamboo is good. I’m in my sixties and my skin looks good for my age. All natural, no anti wrinkle creams which created terrible issues on my face. AND you must improve the quality of your diet. You heal from within. All diseases start from the GUT! ❤️

Hyaluronic acid should come with instructions. I love HA, it makes my skin so plump and fresh, but I only use it with a face mister and then I lock it in with an occlusive cream or oil, depending on what I will do afterwards. It's just not the same without the HA + water mist.
I have an autoimmune disease that attacks a lot of the glands in the body that produce moisture and oils. My skin is unbelievably dry. I use a blend of 100% lanolin oil and raw shea butter to moisturize and protect my sensitive skin. Even on my face! Not everyone needs this much moisturizing but it can be used sparingly on just the driest places, especially in the winters if your climate is on the colder side.
This sounds like Sjogren's Syndrome. Is this what you have? I have this autoimmune disease and my skin on my face and body is extremely dry too and nothing works or absorbs. My Dermatologist prescribed a moisturising gel called Doublebase, but this just sits on top of my skin and doesn't absorb either! Does the lanolin oil absorb into your skin?
Eating enough vitamin c should provide adequate amounts. Extra may be helpful for the skin to be applied directly but I wouldn't say it's absolutely 100% essential for everyone. EDS makes it a little more complicated and I'd say clinical treatment will probably be needed alongside
Thank you for confirming this. I made the switch to oils a few years ago and my skin has been much less dry, red and itchy. One downside is residue can build up on clothes. What I've been doing to counteract that is a fluffy bathrobe after oiling for about 20m before getting dressed.
Are oils necessarily occlusive ? Have they been tested for their capacity to reduce TEWL? I thought that by far the most occlusive ingredient that you could use was petrolatum, and that oils were not that good in doing this. Additionally, a lot of moisturisers include oils in their formulation. I am a bit dubious about this
FINALLY someone said it. I try and stay away from products that use HA. I also live in a dry climate and HA just dries the heck out of my skin. Love the tip of using squalene.

Good question, I've never seen a study with a good control to test that unfortunately
So what you're saying that the abs is wrong? This goes against everything what you said on this video.

Cetaphil is extremely easy to find and it has oil. You just need to read more labels lol

In France we have so many of these moiturisers , we don't know what to choose from but my grand-mother, who was from the south of france, only ever used olive oil on her face, and a hat for sun protection, she had lovely skin up into her 80's.
How did she use the olive oil?
Olive oil is actually a natural sunscreen.
Tried this & woke up with lots of pimples
@@td2222 Health organizations have stated that the natural SPF found in oils isn’t enough to keep you protected. If you need at least 30 SPF to have your skin shielded from UV radiation, know that olive oil only has an SPF of 8.

This is so true! Before I got into skincare 2019, I just used coconut oil and my skin was never dry and always looked good. I also started (and will never stop my tretinoin in 2019).

Thank you for this reminder Dr Abs.
I do actually live in a very humid climate! No not rainforest but air you can wear. Hyaluronic acid works great under my make up applie first to a damp face.
I live in an area classified as a temperate rainforest in the Appalachian mountains. I also put a serum with HA on damp skin every morning, then a moisturizer. Works great for my dry skin.
this man wants to take a dump of HA. IT IS NOT A BAD PRODUCT. IT IS JUST USED WRONG. im not going to put oil on my hormonal, acne prone skin. lol.
Abs. I'm glad I found this video, I've almost never used moisturizing creams, and for 10 years or more I've been using only oils and various types of serums and I'm satisfied. Oil is a sealant. Not a moisturizer. You can have oily skin that is dry and flaky. Use a moisturizer then massage an oil over top to seal moisture in.
Ur body already makes its own moisture. It gets moisture from blood capillaries and natural moisturizing agents like urea, squalene, ceramides etc. We are brainwashed by the skin Industry and their marketing that we really need a moisturizer. Like he says oil repels water and its the perfect moisturizer. Some examples are olive oil, Vaseline, castor oil. The only suitation where u need a moisturizer is extremely dry environment or using tretinoin. Glycerin is the real humactant that gets the job done. But companies don't promote it.
Vaseline is made from petrol products- not what I want on my skin.

I'd been slithering moisturiser on my face for decades (serums were introduced later) and my skin remained dry. I was told that HA was the answer to my concern - no, it wasn't. My skin became even drier!

This is true!
Yep, I started doing this everyday in June and my skin has no longer been dry using glycerin
It’s good for your hair too
Glycerin also removes moisture from your skin if the exterior environment is incompatible. Glycerin is better if you use it in winter to pull moisture from the Aïr instead of your skin like in the summer.

I say this all the time... lack of hydration is lack of sebum on skin, oil, we need nourishing ingredients such as: lard, coconut oil, cocoa butter etc

Essential oils are bad for the skin. Like the fragrance ones. Their not meant for the skin. Now cold press unrefined oils are good.
castor oil for skin care should be organic come in a dark glass bottle and be hexane free Can be used with a carrier oil such as almond oil (dont use almond if you have nut allergy - almonds are drupes and related to nuts ) or olive oil can be used with it - use carefully as it is thick wash off gently after 20 minutes

Not quite.

Should the oil be applied on damp skin or towel blotted? Thanks so much. New subscriber 😊
@@pennyk1943 Thank you so much for answering my question! I was a little confused about applying oils. It’s really kind of you to respond and I appreciate it. Have a great week!
@@pennyk1943 Im an esthetician and have been in the skincare field for decades. Im now 55 and my skin on my face is not dry but looks terrible(Its gone downhill as I just had major surgery). Im just getting my appetite back so Im sure that will change. But what products do you use? I absolutely cannot stand retinoids. They irritate my skin to no end and oils just sit on top of my skin.
Thank you for this. I use organic, cold pressed vitamin E oil at night and it makes my skin (and hair) very soft and moisturised. However I’m still using a moisturiser with SPF 30-50 during the day. Question, if I ditch the moisturiser, what can I use as a sunscreen during the day? And what oil would you suggest for the delicate eye area? I’ve noticed eye creams do very little but I’m getting a few lines, so I’d like to find a good oil for my under eye. Ideas? Thank you so much.
Im struggling to find hyperpigmentation /melasma routine. i mean budget range. By the way im from Malaysia! Other part of the world. I can try get tretinion cream here, but i need help how to layer it. My pigmentation start around aeye area and V shape down to my cheek. We can get hydroquinone too. but without expert guidance im worry to start. i hope you can help
Hello Dr Abs, i heared that oil alone without any basic cream together, dries out the skin. What do you say?
Thx a lot❤
Thank you Dr
What about vitamin c serum?
And what if the body doesn’t produce enough collagen(EDS)?
Eating enough vitamin c should provide adequate amounts. Extra may be helpful for the skin to be applied directly but I wouldn't say it's absolutely 100% essential for everyone. EDS makes it a little more complicated and I'd say clinical treatment will probably be needed alongside
Thank you for confirming this. I made the switch to oils a few years ago and my skin has been much less dry, red and itchy. One downside is residue can build up on clothes. What I've been doing to counteract that is a fluffy bathrobe after oiling for about 20m before getting dressed.
Thank you for the video. Subscribed.
I’ve heard of this from many and yes it works marvelously. I think squalene oil from olives is the finest for skin. Thanks doc. Great video!
aloe vera gel mixing castor oil best combination
Musted oil, coconut oil, olive oil, Roae oil, orange oil and many more.. Should we use it as a skin care routine???
Are oils necessarily occlusive ? Have they been tested for their capacity to reduce TEWL? I thought that by far the most occlusive ingredient that you could use was petrolatum, and that oils were not that good in doing this.
Additionally, a lot of moisturisers include oils in their formulation. I am a bit dubious about this
Me too, commented almost the same.
FINALLY someone said it. I try and stay away from products that use HA. I also live in a dry climate and HA just dries the heck out of my skin. Love the tip of using squalene.
Creams have always broke me out. Oils, never do
It depends on your specific skin type. My skin breaks out when i use oil
@@SEEMASHARMA-gp7usdid you use an oil that was non comedogenic?
@@AbstractMindsThinkAlike is there any oil that is non com?
Thanks for this video. You are probably the second dermatologist on youtube that I have seen, that is talking about the benefits of natural oils. My skin is sensitive and have problems with creams, so I prefer natural oils like Apricot, Argan and Shea butter. I have been using oils even in the summer and never had problem with my skin. I do not even use a make up, thanks to oils. I am 40+.
Ooh makes sense. Never thought about moisturizers in that way. Not a lot of moisturizers work for me anyways, but the ones with urea did good things for my kp. I do like oil (coconut oil being my favorite) but the only issue i have with them is that it gets all sticky and if i go to sleep with them, my pillowcase will stain lol. Any tips to avoid that?
Sure, just use it in a smaller amount and not just before you sleep 😁
i don't know why are you daying that it is cheaper. this tiny bottle of oil costs like a whole jar of moisturizer for 3 months. and i don't know how long this oil will last
Ancient civilizations always used oils but not sure if they had as much skin problems like we do today.
They didn't. My grandmother died at age 97, no skin issues
No junk food. Never used any commercial products. Couldn't afford it. Drank lots of water...coconut water. Used coconut oil outside and castor oil on the inside.
