Exactly. And the sad part is, when someone with problematic skin does give good skincare advice, people will be like “well if you’re such a skin expert, why isn’t your skin good?” Something along those lines. I’ve seen it a lot on UA-cam.
Your discussion on "bad skin" not being a reflection of intelligence or self-worth was so uplifting. Some people are just born with perfect skin and others spend their whole lives trying to figure it out! I really needed to hear that, thank you. I often find myself hesitating to talk about skincare with others because my skin isn't "good".
When topic is about skin I feel so uncomfortable to be part of the discussion because of my melasma . I know so much about the ingredients and skincare after lots of research to manage my melasma , but people look at me like I know nothing and this my fault for having a bad skin .
@@mumof4132 people who think that way are just dumb. Idk my skin is fine but skin is for a huge part just genetic. People who think you lack knowledge or are dirty or something just like being mean I think
I honestly totally agree with you. People with born perfect skin actually have the least skin care experience. They have ever never struggle with cystic acne such as moderate or servere acne at all. They dont have to use hundred of different skin care products to fight off acne or other skin problems. They all have strong skin so they are not likely allergic to any ingredients so everything is beneficial to their skin. However, we, people with bad skin have so many shitty problem with many products. We seem to be impossible to find the best fit product for our skin because each product might negatively affect our skin by one or more ingredients.
Well the main reason why people try to skip on it is because its hard to find one that isnt thick, painfully greasy, fully dries down, doesnt have a white cast or overloaded with alcohol to eliminate the issues I just stated. Now if u want one without all the above and high in UVA protection thats a whole other challenge.
I always find it annoying when people try to give me acne skincare advice like “just wash your face more,” “drink more water,” or “try cutting out dairy,” as if I’m not aware of these things. I am genetically prone to acne and it doesn’t matter what I do, my skin will still break out.
I feel that :( but the one thing is cutting out dairy has actually helped my skin but I think that’s DEFINITELY dependent on the person and their specific intolerances within their gut
@@zak5715 that’s awesome! My skin seems to be better now that I’m back on a RetinA topical but if it gets out of control again I might need to get on accutane. 6 years of this BS I want it gone
As a person who is fighting with acne for the past 8 years of my life , that last advice almost made me cry. It's such an emotional burden to have "bad skin" simply because everybody can see it, its right there on your face , and along with that people like to comment on it which makes it so much harder.
Yeah agreed. I mean I got acne in my late teens, almost at 18. Till then I would get occasional breakouts. When I got an acne flare, everyone felt like they had to comment on it. Even when only scars were left, they kept saying it. Dude, everyone looks in the mirror. Everyone knows what's going on with their skin. 🤦🏻♀️ You don't need to tell me. I recommend getting some tests done to see if there's inflammation in your body. I realized I had auto-immune (thyroid) and went off dairy and gluten. My skin now makes the same people envious. 😏
I feel like the same applies to women with wrinkles. Also,, I still remember the sting of my college roommate telling me that I just don't wash my face enough
yes and it's annoying because the people who give me advice always clearly know nothing about skincare and just have good genetics. Like, no I'm not gonna rub lemon on my face or buy that harsh scrub. I have literally tried everything over the years and I just trust my dermatologist now...I probably know more about skincare than the people who try to give me skincare advice.
When she said having “bad skin” isn’t a reflection of your self worth I almost cried. From June to August I had the worst acne of my life and my whole face was almost entirely covered in it (it has since calmed down thanks to differin). Of course I’m not wearing a mask on my forehead so it was all exposed too. I was an essential worker so I had to work and I’d literally cry the nights before shifts because I didn’t want anyone to see my face and judge me or try and give me advice I’d heard a million times already. My mom would always give me the side eye and call it out as if I didn’t know it was there. I was ashamed to take pictures of my face. So this was very comforting to hear. Thank you Doctor Dray for being so humble and kind. You are one of the most intelligent people on this platform yet you talk to your viewers as friends/equals. Congrats on a very well deserved 1 mil!
Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to helping people. My godmother/best friend is a nurse and I’m so thankful to everyone who is working to help people during this virus.
Regardless of not seeing your face I know without a doubt you are beautiful inside and out I hope you will see it too💕 and as an essential worker you have been doing SO MUCH for people thank you! ( your comment touched my heart in an odd way as my self esteem has fluctuated as In the past I used to tie my worth to my achievements but there is much more than that!) Wishing the best for you and your skin in 2021!
Let's face it- when most people (especially influencers) talk about good skin, they really mean BEAUTIFUL skin. Healthy skin can have wrinkles, spots, etc. but doing less to your skin doesn't sell products.
Right as an esthetician sometimes people get mad when I tell this a certain treatment won’t be right for them because they don’t understand that my goal is for them to have healthy skin.
Yes, I need to hear this. I feel like I do everything "right" but I have had wrinkles for over a decade. Do you really think that healthy options can get rid of them after a decade?!
@@ashleyanastasia7779 maybe facial oil and messaging with gouache or fingers in a certain angle/techinque can lessen them but to get rid of them completely, can be with surgery. But at the end of the day you gotta do a ton of research about this and its never bad to love your wrinkles! :)
At this point they need to start selling sunscreen in big bottles with good prices i mean we buy a small tube and its hella expensive and you need to apply it even indoors every 2 hours omg i dont have that kinda money
It's every 90 min of skin exposure to the sun. 80 min if exposed to sweat or water. Sometimes I'm only an hour total in the sun, but the "hour" is so ovet several hours.
Don’t apply sunscreen if you’re indoors. That’s only if you’re directly in front of a window. You need to reapply every two hours in the sun, but you aren’t supposed to be in the sun constantly all day anyway. Altruist SPF is cheap and the tubes are decently sized.
@@scythianking7315 UVA rays- the ones that can cause skin cancer- can penetrate windows. If you are around large windows for long periods of time, you are still being exposed. This doesn't mean you need to be hysterical about sunscreen, but the sun is still present. Additionally, lots of everyday things contain small doses of ingredients that are toxic in large quantities. That doesn't mean they aren't safe in the amounts in which we use them topically.
@june min Big fan of Altruist. The 30spf is beautiful on the face and under makeup. The 50spf feels heavier, so I use that one when I know I'm going to be outside all day and not wearing makeup.
(edit: Dr Dray already has them written in the description of this video-with timestamps- I hadn't noticed🤭) Bad advice/myths: 1. Exfoliating is a must 2. Sunscreen causes low vitamin D 3. castor oil is efficient when it comes to growing your hair/eyelashes 4. Shaving makes hair thicker 5. Vaseline clogs pores 6. mix your retinol with your mosturizer to make it less irritating 7. Shampooing every day is bad for your scalp 8. You don't need to wear spf indoors 9. Natural skin care products are better 10. You should never take advice from people with bad skin
REMEMBER- Esthetician’s are NOT doctors. I am one and we get the most lame training and know nothing about science. We are glorified cosmetic artists. I hear them on UA-cam trying to come off as knowledgeable of biology and science of skin. Please listen to Dr. Dray or your own dermatologist. Geeze, UA-cam. Why just why. The things I hear them say! 😵😖😖
Agreed. I've recently graduated and feel like i barely know anything. Unless you've been a medical Esthetician and/or worked for dermatologists for years, i would be weary of advice 😅
This terrible advice. Just because you had lame training and know nothing about science does not mean other estheticians are as incompetent as you and don't know what they're talking about.
Can we talk about the rise in unqualified influencers who are making money from giving skincare and product advice they have no place to be giving? It is ultimately the consumers decision to buy a product but if they are desperate they may not understand the influencer/UA-camr isn't qualified and buy a product that is not suitable for them and cause extensive damage. And congratulations on 1 Million!
Spot on. I will never understand why people choose to ignore and dismiss the knowledge and experience of literal *board-certified dermatologists* and trust a influencer who's read a blog post/article _quoting_ a board-certified dermatologist. My skin health has dramatically improved throughout quarantine because I've been following the advice and suggestions of 2-4 board-certified derms on youtube (Dr. Dray included).
I follow about 10 derms here on UA-cam and cut out all of the influencers except James Welsh (I just really love his opinions on products!) I will say that I feel so much more educated on skin HEALTH instead of just products now. It's interesting to see how derms speak about skincare. First they explain issues that could be ailing you, and then curate products for those purpose. I feel like influencers do it the other way around - they promote a bunch of products and try to find issues those products can 'fix'.
“If you have acne it’s not your fault” I mean, thank you so much for saying this. I had a bad flair of acne this year and some friends of mine question me as it if it was my fault, and I get so upset with this. I know it’s not my fault, but people just don’t understand and they always seem to know what causes other people’s acnes and guess what, it’s always their fault. I would just really appreciate it if people could have more sympathy.
It's a psychological phenomena to blame the victim. If it's your fault, then they don't have to worry about it happening to them, because they aren't making the same mistakes you are.
THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT SHAMPOOING EVERYDAY IS OK. i have an oily scalp due to genetics and people always say that im just “not training my hair” like ????? not everyone has a balanced scalp cindy
I'm retired now, but OMG when I was young I absolutely had to wash my hair every day. Very oily face also...and acne. Yeah, high school was a blast.😒 😄😄😄😄😄😄
I don’t think she has an “Ivy League Residency” not that it really matters if she went to an Ivy League School or not because they teach the same thing. What college did she go to?
@@brandonnguyen3955 Actually, she did complete her residency at an Ivy League medical institution: Weill Cornell Medicine in NYC (medical/research institution affiliated with Cornell University). It is very difficult to be accepted into any of the residency programs there. Dermatology, of course, is particularly competitive.
ik. Most youtubers would be shoving that at everyone's face w/ a 1-min montage of their work history & greatness at every video's intro! Believe me, I have seen some skincare experts/consultants (who aren't even dermatologists) do that.
It's really motivating and gives me hope that a year from now I could be looking better than ever rather than older! I have a new sunscreen routine using a $4 mineral SPF 50 from Wal Mart (the Banana Boat Simply Protect Kids knock off) that I'm really happy with so let's see where it takes me. :) One week in and my dark spots are already fading. My 42nd birthday is in 4 months and I think skin that looks better than it did on my 41st will make it a really happy one! Edit/update: FYI: the sunscreen is called Equate Kids Broad Spectrum Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50 at Walmart.
As a final year pharmacy student, there's nothing that irks me more than people telling me I'm trying to sell them products when I offer evidence based advice but then they go out and buy natural skincare and dietary supplements pushed on them by commercials and friends who have no knowledge about the topic. So, thank you for this video! And congrats on 1 million, I hope you grow even more to reach and educate even more people!
@@A.K.00 yeah, I wish I could think like that. I always feel bad because I know they won't see results and honestly discouraged when they decline my advice.
My mom was a pharmacist, she says the same. I even tell her that lots of the commercials use "pharmacist safe" dermatological safe and approved" those aren't regulated in commercials. Easy could be lying
Shampooing everyday (if you need it) yes! I told my dermatologist I was trying to wash my straight greasy hair as little as possible because youtubers said so and she flat out laughed in my face
@Celtic girl have to disagree. Mine would prefer to be washed everyday, but I wash it every second day and on the non-washed day I have to tie my hair up. I've been doing this for over 20 years now and my hair will never need less washing. My hair is straight and thick, made up of lots of hair strands rather than thick hair strands. The only time my hair doesn't need lots of washing is when I'm pregnant. Then my hair barely grows and I only need to wash it once every four days.
@Celtic girl I dont follow hair advice from Dr Dray. But I do follow her scalp advice. Scalp is skin. And you shouldnt wash your hair, you wash your scalp. She said to wash it everyday if you need to. And who needs to wash their scalp everyday with a good medicated shampoo? People with dandruff and psoriasis and flaky scalp. Which makes sense. If you dont have those, I say wash 3x a week or 2x a week.
My mum has straight greasy hair and was washing it every day. It didn’t help. When I started my curly girl journey for my curly hair I decided to help her out with her hair. She now washes it once a week to every 10 days and it’s way better than before. It’s obviously different for everyone but don’t be afraid to try something and give it time to work. I wash mine with shampoo once a week and co wash once a week, that’s what works for me!People say that if you have straight hair you should wash it often but if you have curly or kinky hair less is more. This may be true for some but that doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone, drives me insane when people think that their way is the only way. Find what works for you!
Ophthalmic personnel here - how many times I have heard castor oil to prevent cataracts from forming, long lashes... etc... So many issues from dermatitis, corneal irritation (dry eye)... the list goes on! I tell patients that you cannot order new eyes or new skin from Amazon, treat them with diligent respect!
As a person with mild/moderate acne and hyperpigmentation who spends a lot of time trying to figure out a skincare routine that doesn't require antibiotics, it was really nice to hear you say that acne is not a reflection of skincare knowledge or other controllable factors. You rock!
I’ve been around many people (friends, family) who just have “perfect” skin genetics. Especially my cousins who have that ideal “bright Asian skin” meanwhile I have always struggled with acne and sensitive combo skin since my middle school days. Whenever they complain about one tiny pimple on their forehead (that disappears after 3 days usually) and called themselves “ugly” in front of me I just wanted to scream “how do you think I felt around you guys for the past 10+ years?”
When you say there is “no evidence” for castor oil affecting hair growth, is that because no studies have been conducted or there were studies that demonstrated no statistical correlation? I ask this because I suffered from stubborn baldness in one area of my hair. I tried many products, but after consistently using Jamaican black castor oil, the bald spot filled in. Awesome video!!! Really loved the last one.
I also used it for about 6 month on my lashes in highschool and they did grow, to a point I started getting questions and compliments about it. Also, the lower lashes pretty much stayed longer and thicker(that is where it was more noticeable). I have not been able to use it consistently ever again, but for me it worked and things rarely do.
@@daniak6699 that is awesome! I definitely want to know if there is any science behind it. If there is not, then it’s quite possible that castor oil is beneficial for hair. In the natural hair African American community, it’s wildly popular for growth.
People in this Dr. Dray cult forget that she is still a person and one person does not know EVERYTHING. She is not infallible. If castor oil worked for you continue to use it. It is a "fatty" oil and can be very beneficial for the hair. Skin and hair are very personal. What works for one may not work for another.
I wish I had a reference such as you when I was 13-17 years old. I look back now at the comments that I heard from people when I had cystic acne. Most of them were ignorant, use peroxide every day, do a Milk of Magnesia mask three times a week, etc. I even had to use clorox one time because some dingbat at church told my mother it would clear up my skin. She forced me to do it, because the source was a "smart, Christian woman." Other comments were just mean, of course kids can be mean anyway, but the number of adults who talked to me like I didn't understand basic hygiene was overwhelming. They really believed those clumps of acne occurred because I wasn't washing my face.
Also, somebody always had an input on my skin, use this, use that. I was already overwhelmed, read all shit on treatments and used a lot of bad things to get rid of it and somebody always thought they can chime in
Dr. Dray, congratulations on earning the trust of 1 million subscribers! What you’ve done is truly inspiring and amazing. I have a google doc folder with just your notes! Thank you!
But can we talk about how AMAZING she looks in her latest videos?? She looks healthy and glowy and radiant!!! Keep it up sis I feel like you’re on a good vibe and it shows!
Her lids look like she might have tried the light colored eyeshadow from the Fab Fit Fun Box! Anyway, I wanted to encourage her because she looked so pretty.
We see no one all day now as our new norm, so we are all we have to raise each other up and say, “You look pretty today,” if you styled your hair, got out of your sweats and put on lip gloss when not wearing a mask. Today, I dressed up with no place to go and put on makeup!!! Happy New Year’s Eve everyone.
OUR 'ONE IN A MILLION' HAS REACHED A MILLION !! CONGRATULATIONS DR DRAY, YOU EDUCATE US, SAVE US MONEY AND ABOVE ALL YOU MAKE US SMILE...YOU ARE A TRUE PROFESSIONAL! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND MANY HAPPY DAYS...THANK YOU
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the reassurance that bad skin does not equal bad routines or products. I take great care of my skin, invest in good products, and stick to a healthy diet, but my skin is horrifically scarred from previous cystic acne and no amount of expensive cosmetic treatment seems to improve it. People say such thoughtless, accusatory things without even bothering to ask how much time, effort and money I put into my skin (spoiler alert: it's a hell of a lot) - I want to slap them sometimes! The ignorance of some people is astonishing. Thank you for the encouragement!
Thank you SO much for addressing 'daily shampooing is bad for your hair'. I bought into that notion for awhile and was never happy. I just ended up with gross, stinky, flat, oily hair. Guess I didn't wait long enough for "my scalp to figure it out and to start giving me gorgeous bouncy hair". 🙄🤨 Thank yoooou Dr Dray! ☺️💕
It took about a year for my hair and scalp to adjust, but when it did it's honestly great. My hair isn't flat, oily, or stinky, it wasn't even those thing while if was adjusting.
@@baishalideb5565 It doesn't adjust if you have naturally oily scalp, any more than someone with naturally dry skin will develop an oily or different skin type if they sit and refuse to clean and moisturise their skin every day. What you end up with is built up skin cells, dirty, grime and oils feeding the yeasts that cause inflammation. If your excess oils were simply a inflammatory reaction to overwashing, less washing may indeed help, but for most oily scalp is simply how they're made. Oil production is a function controlled by sex hormones starting at puberty. Stopping washing does nothing to change your hormonal panel and oestrogen/testosterone balance and never will. it's like refusing to wash your car thinking it'll fix a problem with the engine. Everyone has different scalp, hair and skin and the whole point Dray is making is there is no one size fits all approach and that such an approach is generally the mark of an uneducated know nothing. Just because something worked for you, doesn't mean it has any application to someone with an issue stemming from an entirely different cause.
@@littleblackpistol u wrote an whole essay..lol...for nothing...that person never said she had naturally oily scalp..or did i miss it ? she just said she isnt ready to give it time.
The one piece of advice that annoys me the most is the whole 'natural is better' argument. Closely followed by the idea that you need to have an elaborate routine to have healthy skin.
I’ve had really negative experiences with “natural” products. Anything with essential oils is so irritating that my skin instantly starts burning when it’s applied.
I think blanket statements are the real issue. I personally try not to put anything on my skin that cannot safely be absorbed into my bloodstream but there are plenty of natural products that don’t belong there, either. Essential oils can be great added to body oils, some more than others, but I generally don’t use them on my face, too stimulating. I have recently discovered a Korean line I like a lot, Haruharu, that uses fermented black rice extracts, and am loving it.
I heard the "exfoliation is a must" statement at the age of around 14 and did it for years, never understanding how much it was actually hurting my skin. I went to a dermatologist at the age of 18 and realised I actually had a type of rosacea and exfoliation was possibly one of the worst things I could have been doing...
Mixing lemon juice, salt, manuka honey, and olive oil as a scrub. Acv as a toner and using clarisonic brush on a daily basis. Moisturising with a coconut oil. Yep early days of UA-cam.ヽ(。◕o◕。)ノ. Thank god we have you Dr Dray, Hyram, Cassandra, James Welsh, The Golden RX, Dr Davin Lim, Matt Randon, Liah Yoo, Lab Muffin🤗
i've definitely received unhelpful advice from people with "good" skin, which is part of what motivated me to seek education from experts like you. It's tough to realize most people won't really know how to help you, but it's also freeing to know you really can find your own path towards a good relationship with your skin. And this community is definitely one of the best things that happened for my skin!
Sometimes I feel embarased of recommending to my friends products you recommend in your videos because of my acne, but your 10th point really helped me feel better 😢❤️ love you dr dray
I don't comment allot or mostly never but I do watch everyday however today I had to congratulate you on your Million subscribers!! I am 75 and you not only have saved me tons of money but my skin looks better. Am I still wrinkled? Yes but as I said my skin looks better!! BTW I bought the Aveeno Calm+Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer and I LOVE it!!! Thank you for your time & energy and all you do to educate us! What a gift you are!! P.s. you mom is in my thoughts always! Hang in there!!
I'm still wading through the moisturizers I had before finding this channel - then onto Aveeno Oatmeal! ~♡~♡~♡~ I think of Dr. Dray's mom often; was just thinking about her today.
I’m 58 and also just bought the aveeno calm oat serum and moisturizer and really love it!! The absolute first thing I love is NO SCENT and second, no burning on my face!! I use retin a and anything with scent burns my face.
Thanks for this Dr. Dray. I especially appreciate the "bad skin" advice. I have some pretty bad acne scarring and have lived most of my adult life with this negative stigma. When I talk about something like sunscreen women tend to get a blank look on their face like "who are you to tell me anything about skin". Its ok, but I could literally give the same advice as someone with flawless skin and coming from me its invalid. Its something that is perpetuated by the "beauty industry" which again I actually love, but I listen to people that appear to be knowledgable as determined by my own knowledge base or things I can verify to be true, not by what their skin looks like or even if they fit a certain beauty standard. Congrats on a million subs Dr Dray, I have been following you since 17,000 and I want to thank you for all of the advice, wisdom, and encouragement you have offered over the years. Give your mama a big hug for me too, she is missed!
Thank you for mentioning good skin is just genetics! I have a health diet- no dairy, good skin care routine (thanks to you), exercise and only drink water. I have acne and the only thing to get rid of it was Accutane. I know ppl who dont ever wash or moisturize their face and have a BAD diet and never had a single blemish.... sigh
Thank you for talking about how wrong it is to judge someone‘s skin knowledge based on the condition of their skin☺️Eczema and allergies also run in my family and I managed to get it under good control with your advice! Thanks a lot😊 ps: you look really radiant and pretty here🌷
The thing I love about you Dr Dray is how down to earth you are! The last part of your video resonated the most with me, in how you say that acne is not our fault and hyperpigmentation, acne scars, having acne at all, is not a reflection of us as a person and that no matter what our skincare routine is, it is out of our control and still not a reflection on our intelligence or our skincare choices, that it really does boil down to genetics for some. Thank you so much for that, it's just nice to hear especially from a professional like you!
Dr Dray, your last "worst advice tidbit" really touched me. I am a medical school applicant and am really excited about dermatology, but I can't help but wonder if my struggle with acne and seb derm would affect my chances since most derms you see have "perfect" skin. Thanks for sharing. You're the BEST!
You are such an amazing, intelligent, articulate young lady! It’s extremely clear that you have knowledge of the counsel you give! It warms my heart to see you looking so beautiful with your red hair! You are SO special to so many people and a life line to those who can’t afford going to a Dermatologist. I don’t even believe that saying “thank you” is enough. I do pray that knowing ALL the goodness you do in helping SO MANY people will bring you meaning and purpose beyond!! Truly I Thank you!!😊😊
Your last words about "good skin" vs "bad skin" reflecting your knowedge and worth were amazing to hear. As someone who grew up with persistent skin issues and was constantly judged for it, it was so refreshing to hear all these years later. Thank you so much for that and I'm excited to have just subscribed 😊
I would consider myself a reasonably knowledgeable person in the realm of skin care, but I have to say I learned some things here today and that is why I love your channel.
"People with flawless-blemish free skin are often have well, good genetic" Finally I have something new to answer repetitive question like "why everytime I see you you always got pimple in your face"
HAPPY 1 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS, DR. DRAY!!! You totally deserve to get more than a million subs honestly! Thank you for always helping us to get a healthier skin and save some bucks!!! 🖤
I just love it when people assume you have acne BECAUSE you wear makeup. I have struggled with acne for years, when wearing or not wearing makeup. Yes, some makeup causes flare ups, but you learn which ones those are and stop using them. Not all makeup does this.
Dr Dray, the expertise, advice and light-heartedness in your daily vlog posts have been such a positive addition to my 2020. Thank you! Happy New Year!
She’s so right about genetics playing a big role. That’s a fact tho I use to do absolutely nothing to my face and just never had pimples and people would always ask me what I did. But I had super dry skin that looks healthy but was super dehydrated. Now I moisturizer and my skin feels better but it’s still sandpapery If I don’t put oil on top my glycerin and moisturizer.
So happy to hear from you!! Thank you and wish the very best to you 😍 for the New Year as well as to your family dear friend. So happy for Dr Dray’s huge success. We have all learnt a lot from this special lady. Take care and loads of good wishes from the UK 🤩🥳🥰💖💖💖
I am a retired Wound care Nurse!!! Experienced all levels. I just didn't know how to take care of my skin. I found you from Miss Cassandra. I Love coming to your "classes." You are an awesome Teacher. Love you go into the Science of the skin etc. I'm 57, a Gramma, and after 5 years of hits, misses of trials from all the "try this, it will take 20 years off your life!" videos. Miss Cassandra is a funny informative fact based esthetician, Dr. Dray, you have become part of my everyday watch, especially if I have a thought and need educated. My skin looks & feels great. I stopped using base makeup, and have gone to minimal eye makeup. Thank you & God Bless.
A lot of people with bad skin know a lot about skincare BECAUSE we have to learn how to help our skin. I have spent years researching skincare (It's a hobby, nothing fancy) and acne because I suddenly got bad acne (had one or two pimples when I was a teen) when I turned into an adult. I run into a lot of people with good skin who don't know much about skincare at all and just buy whatever looks pretty or smells nice.
Thank you for saying “having acne it’s not your fault, it’s genetics “ this is very powerful statement specially for people who suffers acne their whole life. Congratulations on your 1M 🎉🎉🎉
One positive thing to happen in 2020.... I found this channel and made some real progress in my skin health! Thank you Dr Dray! And congrats on one million subscribers!
I just found you recently. I have applied many of these principles after “binge” listening to many of your videos (while running on my treadmill 😊) and my skin and hair are already transforming. I was guilty of trying to do too much, and thinking everything had to be “natural”. Thank you for all the great content! Happy New Year!
The last tip made me cry. Thanks for that Dr. Dray, couldn’t have said it more perfect myself. People are continuously told that if they have acne, they need to determine what the “root cause” is. Yet if this were any other disease at hand, not one person would tell you to determine the “root cause”. They would probably hope that you’re seeing a doctor to cure this disease. I hate this idea that people on social media have pushed so hard onto acne sufferers. Congrats on 1 million! 🎉
Every issue in your body has a root cause. If you were seeing a naturopathic doctor they would’ve told you that. but no “real“ 🙄 doctor is going to say that because they have no idea how to find a root cause.
Congrats Dr. Dray, have always been a person who took care of my skin in my early 20s I read books about skin and learned about sunscreen which I believe is the key to good skin once I had my two sons I was lucky to brush my teeth so I know I neglected my skin, when I found you last year I started to take care of my skin again, I love that you give sound information, recommend economical products and best of all not trying to push product after product to us. Congratulations.
The last one really hit me. I really did felt guilty whenever I gave advice i've heard from dermatologists over here, because I have acne and scars on my face and thought people would just be like "what's the point if u look like this". Thank you so much for saying all of that, an you're right, no amount of knowledge will reverse genetics. ♡
Yes, this is so true! My skin used to be super oily and acne prone, so I always got recommended to buy scrubs. My skin is always red as a result. I thought it’s my skin to blame so I keep using scrubs, hoping the redness will go away with the help of those scrubs. Now I avoid all kinds of physical exfoliant and my skin become so much better - softer, smoother and less irritated!
My mom makes fun of me when I wear sunscreen indoors. I tried to tell her that you still need to wear it even though you're 10 ft away, and she just laughed and told that I would need to be right against the window.
Personally even if sunscreen would have prevented vitamin D of sun absorption I would still use sunscreen just as much. I rather take slightly more vitamin D drops, than suffer the consequences of sun exposure. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it won't hurt you.
I have dermatomyositis, and saying "this is not your fault" truly meant the world to me. I feel so guilty for having bad skin on my hands and face due to my disease, but every little sentiment that is positive toward skin diseases is SO helpful. Thank you.
Thank you SOOO much for pointing out the fact that you shouldn't take skin advice from someone who has "bad" skin. I've suffered with acne since I was 13 (I'm now 26 and STILL have acne) I've graduated esthetics with awards, and I do skincare research all the time on my free time, and I've tried SO MANY THINGS and still break out. It is not my fault, these are my GENETICS. I have family members who also suffer with acne. It's not just an easy fix with certain products! I've been so scared to go into the esthetics world and start a career because I feel like people won't want to take advice from me if my skin isn't perfect. I also have wanted to further my education, become a medical esthetician and possibly a dermatologist but my insecurities are holding me back...
This video needs so much more attention it really supported me personally. I as a 17 year old boy suffers from acne since 14, it is painful both physically and mentally because it went from mild to severe with cysts. I have been fairly educated with products to use and avoid by skincare experts. The most important question I would like to ask, is there any affordable methods of fading acne scars that are deep in the skin surface?
TY for debunking vaseline i reallllyyyyyy hope theres more views on this video. vaseline was the ONLYY thing that saved my moisture barrier when i was using retin-A for acne.
Sorry Doc, but Castor oil makes my eyebrows far, far thicker. They need far more plucking when I use it. Its also the very best hydrator for my hair, when I use it, my hair is in the best condition ever. I really do think it's sn exceptional oil.
Thanks Dr Dray. The last point really hit hard for me except it’s hair instead of skin. Genetically I have a hair loss condition and it’s hard when everyone wants to give you advice that you know from research doesn’t work. It’s hard not to tie it to self worth. Congrats on 1 million!!!
you clearly demonstrated today that how wearing makeup everyday will leave nothing to novelty and uniqueness and will come off as normal if worn on a daily basis. Tha slight hint of tint and mascara is popping as much as its suiting you ms.dray😍 ps- i wont say that you must “wear it often”👀🤣😁 spaced out= more noticeable! 😍
I have been putting castor oil on my eyelashes almost every night for the past few months and my eyelashes got almost twice as long and thick! The difference is so noticeable that my coworkers starting asking me why my lashes are so long now. So it must work for some people.

Great video!! Nice to hear you call out the "natural is best and are not chemicals" and the notion that only individuals with good skin can give skin advice. There is such a lack of critical thinking out there. The planet is a varied amalgamation of "chemicals " and, like you said, genetics, sleep status, hormonal status and nutritional status can affect people’s skin at any given time. Well said, Dr.Dray👋🏽😊
I find that people with non-problematic skin are often the ones giving out the worst, most glib skincare advice.

Agreed!!
If spf were sold as antiaging moisturizing instead of spf nobody would still be asking if it is necessary. ..
That's the truth
This 👏 right 👏 here 👏
Perfect!!

All. The. Time. 🙄
I feel that :( but the one thing is cutting out dairy has actually helped my skin but I think that’s DEFINITELY dependent on the person and their specific intolerances within their gut

As a person who is fighting with acne for the past 8 years of my life , that last advice almost made me cry. It's such an emotional burden to have "bad skin" simply because everybody can see it, its right there on your face , and along with that people like to comment on it which makes it so much harder.
*SAME*
Yeah agreed. 😏
same here
I feel like the same applies to women with wrinkles.
Also,, I still remember the sting of my college roommate telling me that I just don't wash my face enough
yes and it's annoying because the people who give me advice always clearly know nothing about skincare and just have good genetics. Like, no I'm not gonna rub lemon on my face or buy that harsh scrub.

Yes!
Plus, they use filters to make their skin look perfect.
Go to Australia lol the sunscreens are in gallon bottles
(edit: Dr Dray already has them written in the description of this video-with timestamps- I hadn't noticed🤭) Bad advice/myths:
1. Exfoliating is a must
2. Sunscreen causes low vitamin D
3. castor oil is efficient when it comes to growing your hair/eyelashes
4. Shaving makes hair thicker
5. Vaseline clogs pores
6. mix your retinol with your mosturizer to make it less irritating
7. Shampooing every day is bad for your scalp
8. You don't need to wear spf indoors
9. Natural skin care products are better
10. You should never take advice from people with bad skin

@Celtic girl right every day is a lot...at the best least every other day would be better.
@Celtic girl She did say that it would help people with dandruff

Lol, ruined my skin for sure
Umm where's lab muffin
@@zaphax3815 sorry my bad
ACV as a toner? Does Dr. Dray talk about that?
ooo have you heard of GlowByRamon, hes a bit smaller but hes currently studying to become a cosmetic formulator and gives great advice!
i've definitely received unhelpful advice from people with "good" skin, which is part of what motivated me to seek education from experts like you.
I just bought the Aveeno Calm and Restore today in the trial size today. Can't wait to try it. Also, suggested it to a friend today.
I'm still wading through the moisturizers I had before finding this channel - then onto Aveeno Oatmeal!
~♡~♡~♡~
I think of Dr. Dray's mom often; was just thinking about her today.
I’m 58 and also just bought the aveeno calm oat serum and moisturizer and really love it!! The absolute first thing I love is NO SCENT and second, no burning on my face!! I use retin a and anything with scent burns my face.
Because of you my skin looks better and started glowing these past few months. Thank you and congrats on your 1M subscribers! 👍🏻👏🏼😁💗💗💗
Number 10 is pure gold! Knowledge doesn’t change your genetics. True of many diseases.
Epigenegics can change your genes.
I know ppl who dont ever wash or moisturize their face and have a BAD diet and never had a single blemish.... sigh
Congratulations on reaching 1M! Your advice has definitely helped me learn more about my skim and got me to start wearing sunscreen.
Same for me. So glad, i never knew i should be wearing sunscreen that much!
Thank you for talking about how wrong it is to judge someone‘s skin knowledge based on the condition of their skin☺️Eczema and allergies also run in my family and I managed to get it under good control with your advice! Thanks a lot😊 ps: you look really radiant and pretty here🌷
Didn't expect that last advice. What a nice surprise. I wish more people would understand. Congratulations on hitting 1M and happy holidays!
Truthfully, no one sees “most derms.” The ones you see and that get the most publicity are not representative of the specialty as a whole

OMG Susan Yara! Love your work!
Truly I Thank you!!😊😊
You look so pretty! Congrats on 1 mil!!! 🥳
The only UA-camr that I trust
The lab muffin has some great knowledge also. Mostly on the content in the products.
CONGRATULATIONS ANDREA! 1 million subscribers is such a milestone and you deserve it! 💓 Ps, great video! Xx 🎉🎉🎉
"People with flawless-blemish free skin are often have well, good genetic"
Finally I have something new to answer repetitive question like "why everytime I see you you always got pimple in your face"
ask them about flaws in their physical appearance the same way.
Not necessarily
*ONE MILLION SUBSCRIBERS* . . . CONRATS Dr. Dray!! I knew we could all

HAPPY 1 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS, DR. DRAY!!!

Thank you for always helping us to get a healthier skin and save some bucks!!!

I have so much respect for you for sharing your view over "imperfect" skin does not equal bad choices. Thank you, Dr. Dray
❤️❤️❤️Congratulations to our favourite UA-camr for reaching this milestone!! Well-deserved ❤️❤️❤️

Congratulations on 1 million and omg you’re just more glowing and radiant everyday!

Dr. Dray... you are looking SNATCHED
What does that mean?
It’s a slang for gorgeous, beautiful
She sure is.
@@mlancholia3920 thanks, never heard that before, but she is absolutely right!
I loved your statement at the end. Having good skin is just a beauty standard and should have nothing to do with self worth ❤️
The last part made me respect Dr. Dray so much. ♥️♥️ She definitely deserves 1M subscribers.
Thank you for clarifying that it’s not a lack of knowledge or a person’s fault for having bad skin.
My mom makes fun of me when I wear sunscreen indoors. I tried to tell her that you still need to wear it even though you're 10 ft away, and she just laughed and told that I would need to be right against the window.
I have curtains I never open due to privacy, so I don’t wear sunscreen when I’m home all day.
Moms still think they know everything 🤣
That lip color looks so good on you girl!
I like your lip tint today! 😍
I agree, and I wanna know what is she using, because it looks so cool
Me too! It’s like bow chica bow wow 🤩

Same!! I was searching for a comment like this cause I've been using castor oil on my eyelashes and hair since 6 months and they've grown really long like everyone keeps asking me d same
Me too!! I was surprised when I heard her talk about it. I’ve seen results and none of the negative results she talked about so I’m going to keep doing it :)
Question for you and the people who commented, did your eye vision ever change? I use to do it for a few days but it burned my eyes sometimes even though i tried to not get it in my eye but i tried to apply to the roots
yeah I could easily see a difference when using castor oil on my eyelashes. Especially when I stopped. So it really works for me though somehow.
@@flxwercxrpse1871 no because I don’t try to apply it as close to my roots I just apply it like normal mascara then go to sleep when I go to sleep my eyes don’t open so it never gets in my ehes
Waowww Dr. Dray is wearing lipstick!! *so rare*
So true skin is 70% genetics
15:34 literally brought tears to my eyes. Having acne is NOT your fault. Thank you so much Dr Dray! Your'e not only smart and amazing at what you do but compassionate!
