I think if he hadn’t lied it would had helped him.
Pity he spoke to cops without an attorney. No 1 rule attorneys always give but no one pays attention, its ludicrous!
He's a liar, he's a macho pos who smiled while considering the surprise he'd spring on them. He played them, and instigated them. If those teens were disrespectful and rude... he was planning serious harm while they were rude.
YOU DON'T GO FOR THE KILL BC OF SOMEONE'S INSULTS.
He was scared there was no way he would have escaped
I think so too. He should have just pled the 5th and ask for a lawyer.
If he had said nothing he wouldn’t have been charged. The video by itself would have exonerated him
Thank you for covering this. At the end of the day, there are no winners here and I'd bet that every participant wishes they could turn the clock back and do things differently.
Hopefully every sing person involved felt justice, as well as the realization that rash decisions and inappropriate behavior can have tragic drastic outcomes. All involved could have walked away before it got out of control and tragedy occurred.
Yep Isaac Schuman is still dead and now Miu is getting life in prison. Tragic
Very well said
Nicholas was too drunk to understand what he was doing. He told the lady detective he had many many beers and water and no food.
@@camlacasse3760 Then his wife lied for him, because I think she said he had 2 beers.
Wisconsin does not play. The charge for 1st degree reckless homicide in Wisconsin is up to 60 years. I’m in California. The sentence for that charge in California is up to 4 years. What a difference.
Hi, I’m in the UK. It seems that self defence in Wisconsin means you can use equal force in self defence back ie fists if someone used fists on you. Is my understanding correct? If so it may work for one against one but does not seem to take into account if you are trying to fend off several people and like in this case, they, or the extras, would have just kept coming back at him, till they more completely over manned him, risking serious injury to himself, Using the knife though drastic, did stop them and allow him to walk away without more harm (except a lifelong jail sentence).
Do you think he could get out on good behavior ?
@@Classictail not at all. He may get time knocked off for good behavior but I don’t think it will ever be enough for him to get out. Pretty sure he will spend the rest of his days in prison.
@@francesholliday5427 the reason his self defense claim did not work was because the jury was able to take into consideration his failure to retreat. Meaning he was able to get himself out of the situation before it got bigger and he didn’t. I really really really don’t think those teens would have went after him if he was to walk pass them to leave. They may have kept talking shit but I don’t think they would have put their hands on him. They told him to leave multiple times and he chose to hang around to see what would happen.
@Jazlin92665 I just think the teens injuries were a direct result of putting their hands on Nic. They misunderstood him on purpose to start with him. He had every right to look for a lost phone. & they would have never been injured if they didn't surround him & lay hands on him. & after the fact is a trauma response. He eventually admitted it but when you endure a traumatic event you instantly try to act like it never happened or minimize your involvement. It is a shame they didn't put a psychologist on the stand to explain his behavior. Trauma response 101. & him almost losing his life bc of his surgery, he didn't want to take any chances. I honestly think the jury got this one wrong.
I think all these young adults should be charged as well for all the things they did-alcohol, drugs, battery, lying. These people invited and esculated a situation. They turned it into a mob mentality. And a show to record and show others. There are no winners here. Shows how little respect they had for this guy and his loved ones. No one is right if everybody's wrong.
Never lie, never dispose of weapon ,never leave the scene.........he screwed himself
I'm wondering if shock was a factor. However, lying in his interrogation went against him. I think the judge allowing his interrogation video into evidence may be grounds for an appeal given the detective told him it would be 2-3 days before he could talk to an attorney and he'd stay in jail until then.
He also could have not stabbed anyone...
IT WASNT THE LYING ..IT WAS THAT HE WENT WAAAAAAAY OVERBOARD AND HE NEW IT.😉
After talking with a local there I believe they would have convicted him either way.
Miu's defense of himself was too gruesome and resulted in a fatality.
@@bchero Right? He could have just let the a$$holes kill him. What was he thinking, defending his own life? Did he think he was in America or something?
Thank you Peter for covering all these cases at the same time.
As a fmr lawyer in UK i think the prosecutor was pleased with verdict but humble. I hate to see lawyers crowing & displaying a cocky attitude. Not once did he laugh smile or brag. That is what a good lawyer does, you do not showing arrogance when someone has died or been so badly injured. The kids were being stupid but if we all acted like Mui with cocky mouthy kids the jails would be full.
those bullies got away with everything and Miu lost the rest of his life in prison. Travesty of justice. Such a pity for this man, to have those punks destroy his life.
This is one case that really breaks my heart.

No kidding! Peter is amazing! So many videos this week, he’s been on a roll!
My question is how is he guilty of battery of Madison Coen when there was no proof/evidence he hit her at all. The "battery" done isn't caught on video and everyone at the scene had a different version of how she was "hit" making their statements much less credible. Some say she was punched on her right side, some said left side, some said with an open hand and others said a fist. Madison herself said he hit her on her left side with his left hand??? I can't believe the jury bought that. Madison deleted the only alleged photo of her face and no one else saw an injury on her. In addition, how is he convicted of battery and all the other people slapping him around get charged with nothing?
I agree. You can’t go by hearsay. This jury was not fair

I have to say that I don’t agree with the verdict. I don’t condone what he did and believe there should be some penalty due to that, but I don’t believe he should be guilty to the extent they went. To me it was absolute self defense and I really hope myself, nor my family, ever get into a situation like this because I thought you could defend yourself. Those young adults were drunk, unruly, egged each other on, and caused all of it. Go ahead and attack me for my opinion but nothing will change it.
I totally agree with you Skipper !! The people who wanted him guilty are the same people that would like to get assaulted and just sit there and take it !! Fortunately for me, I’m not one of these people. I would try my best to defend myself. But it does look like you can’t anymore. Ridiculous.
But like Peter said in an earlier video…. People have said, what if it was your father…. Like Peter said, his father 100 time out of 100 he would have walked away. Most people would walk away. The kids were NOT being violent towards him. He ran back towards the kids. If he would have kept walking, no one would be here today and Issac would still be alive.
@@heathermitchell7191maybe Peter's father would have walked away. Hell, maybe even Mr. Miu would have walked away if he had know what was to happen. Its easy to say you'd walk away because you have hindsight. So you and Peter can say you and your family would have walked away and then i can say that IF it were my kids, they wouldn't have been drunk and they wouldnt have bullied an old man into stabbing them. My kids would have done something differently.
See how ridiculous of a statement that is. You don't know what you or anyone else would have done befause you werent there and you AREN'T Mr. Miu with his ailments abd his life experiences.
English also isn't Mr. Miu's first language. I definitely think that had an impact on his response.
Yes, Miun walking away would have prevented this but so would the biys walkong away. Why is it his responsibility to walk away from a fight he isnt starting? Why is this all on him?
And just so everyone who thinks the jury got it right, THEY FOUND HIM GUILTY ON THE CHARGES AFTER THE CLOSING ARGUMENTS. That means that Miu's defense tram never got to defend against those charges and that's not fair. That's so ridiculous.
Ya, it is terrifying to live somewhere if you cannot defend yourself
@@specialsause949well said. I have been in situations where the fear is creeping in and you still feel a bit silly for being afraid. So you kind of act tough and don't want to back down. But ya, if a person could predict the future and knew they would fear for their life 2 minutes later, EVERYONE would back down. I can see even a few decent men I know responding how Miu did. But.... I CANNOT see even one decent human being I know behaving like those boys. My recovering addict of a brother AT HIS TEENAGE WORST would not behave like those boys. I am not sure I have ever seen anyone in real life be as cruel as those boys. The sheer numbers were overwhelming and the mocking, rape accusing and yelling and laughing... blood doesn't traumatize me. Dead bodies in real life do not traumatize me. But I could only listen to the audio one time because it made me physically feel anxiety. And i am not an anxious person.
Poor man a pack of bullies, so pleased our justice system in Australia is so much fairer then the USA 😡 I hope you are free to be with you family soon 😞
So if people bully you, you can stab them, discard the weapon, and try to dodge police in Australia? Wild place
I want to know how this group of teens who were high and intoxicated were going to drive home after their "fun"?
Think about that! Who was their designated driver at the end of this tubing event? Who provided the drugs and alcohol?
Who is responsible for these "children" and their actions? How many times do teens go to Apple River and drive home drunk?
Maybe it's time to look into the parents. Isaac's mom said she knew them. They were all "best" friends since middle school. How often did they go to the river to bully people and finally someone fought back? Time to shut this party down. The parents ALLOWED this behavior.
Take a bit of responsibility. They need to be prosecuted for these crimes.
They should’ve found him not guilty and left it at the two years he’s already been behind bars. The state shouldn’t have been allowed to give the jury so many options. Intentional never should’ve been on the table.
He should have walked away from the teens or never lied to the police, he lied to the police because he knew that he messed up.

Watch full interview of Mui … the lies are incredible- honestly- worth the watch
100% It made all the difference for me. It's kinda the nail in the coffin if you're on the fence.
He knew it didn't matter if he told the truth, he took a chance and attempted to lie his way out of the situation, which was never going to happen in my opinion, but that is neither here nor there. In most states in America if you are attacked and you defend yourself and your attacker is killed you will be charged and convicted of murder. This is an example of that.

Agreed! I am Canadian and have great respect for the US system.... but not today. In Canada we have NO right for self-defense. Their are guys in jail for shooting a criminal breaking into their house. This is terrifying to see they did not see ANY little smidgen of doubt? Like the defense said in closing.... even if the jurors PROBABLY think it was NOT self-defense.... he is not guilty. So they are saying he did not fear for his life and there is the absence of doubt. They don't even think he feared a little bit??

I don't know if there is someone doing this but I have avoided lives lately here because people in the chat are being nasty, name calling and generally making one not want to be around them. I didn’t feel that the case against Miu was proven beyond doubt. So many inconsistencies, omitted or unable to recall, things not captured on the recordings that were so important to know for sure what happened. I was surprised by the verdict.
Circumstantial evidence can be used, not just what's on video.
Exactly. Beyond a reasonable doubt. I'm on the fence but that's why beyond a reasonable doubt is the standard.

Self defense is now illegal 😢.
In my opinion the last stabbing when Miu advanced upon Dante and stabbed him showed an act of rage, then the jury works backwards with the stabbings and starts questioning if they were all in anger.

But Peter, they were so confrontational before the knife was ever pulled out. Why are they not being punished for their actions? They got this ball rolling for no reason.
He ran up to them & ignored their escalating demands to leave. Before he was physically attacked he had already lunged at & grabbed their legs before suddenly punching a woman in the face. They were loud, they were obnoxious, but he was the one who walked away, returned, stood silently, & smiled while fiddling with a knife in his pocket that nobody knew he had. A lot of bad behavior from both, but his implicit & explicit actions created this entire situations. He should have continued walking away the first time, or turned & left at any point, like they were screaming at him to do. Nobody would have followed him. He could have brandished the knife once he was attacked to get them to back off long enough for him to escape. No legal duty to retreat, sure, but that creepy smile was a product of the rage building inside of him. He viciously stabbed anyone within reach, blade up, & chased the final victim down as he was running away. It was brutal & completely reckless. Just because people are young, loud, & obnoxious doesn’t mean it’s ok to disembowel them or stab them in the heart.
They were punished in the worst way imaginable. A 17 year old lost his life right in front of his friends. Another boy held his intestines in his own hands until help arrived. They had surgeries and horrible scars that will always remind them of what happened...I can't imagine consequences any worse 💔
Yet they learned nothing. Each one of those "kids" lied on the stand and pretended to be younger than they were, and they didn't take any responsibility whatsoever. Isaac's parents should sue the other "kids. They started and escalated this entire thing.
Punish a group of teens for being A holes and obnoxious? Doesn’t make an ounce of sense. It’s victim blaming. Now punish for underage drinking and possession of marijuana. That’s another story. But you have to remember there was a dead child that the police were dealing with. Least of their worries were a bunch of drunk/high obnoxious teenagers.
Stabbing & murder are a greater offense.
Appreciate you covering this

I knew nothing about this case 3 days ago when I watched the video of the stabbing. First thought, Miu was to blame. He was the initial aggressor. If he doesn’t run towards the kids who were floating away from him, none of this happens. People have the right to say whatever they’d like, whether you like it or not. Old age does not entitle you respect from others, old age doesn’t allow you to put hands on teens because of name calling. Miu is clearly guilty and justice was served.

I mean, that's not true at all, even in America which is very pro free speech Fighting-Words is a real thing and is used in legal cases all the time. They called this man a P to the O multiple times, the fact that this wasn't brought up as an example of Fighting-Words is ridiculous. I hope the prosecutor doesn't take this as an endorsement of his skill as a prosecutor. He still needs a lot more experience.
That's weird because he won comma I think the defense needs a lot more work
I have to agree. He really stumbled through all the questioning, opening statements, and closing arguments. I think that he got lost in the story and missed a lot of opportunities to get straight to the point. If I were an attorney, I'd want to lay out the facts very simply and clean and not turn it into a bedtime story (yes, pun about the "sleeping juror", lol). As much as I disliked the defense attorney, and his obnoxious attitude, guy was on point. Even though he lost this trial, I'd much rather hire him to defend me if I was ever stupid or crazy enough to need a defense attorney.
@@FoxyMoxy5314the defenses case in chief lasted literally an afternoon and they didn’t attempt to call a single expert. He did a horrible job coaching his client on how to testify and walked him into a conviction with many of the open ended questions he chose to ask. He had one good line in his closing argument and that was about it.
@@lankstadiscsI've seen these sentiments echoed in several defense attorneys' analyses of this case. Watching Miu's cross examination, they kept pausing with: "How did you not see that question coming?! You should have anticipated this question & prepared your client accordingly."
I also find it despicable how they responded to the judge asking if they'd notified their witnesses of the sequestration order (after the witnesses were caught watching a livestream of the trial 🙄). Their answer? Sorry, Judge, we couldn't bother finding a translator. "We'll do better in the future." ?!!!
How TF does this kind of sh*t fly in any courtroom? WTF is the point of an "order" if the people ordered to abide by it don't actually have to? They were ordered to not watch the trial before testifying; the attorneys tasked to inform them didn't (but the prosecutors did!); they said 🖕 to the order; the judge, completely unbothered by their disrespect of said order, repeated the order to their faces; they, after having watched parts of (probably all of) the trial, were still able to testify; thus, what is the POINT-?
But yeah, the defense's: "Get on the stand & cop to remembering the lie about your knife, but fake total amnesia about everything else (except the part where you sh*t yourself bc all the 'fear')" strategy bombed.
@@lankstadiscs I like that you have a differing opinion on this. It actually gave me a nudge bit to go back and examine it a bit more. I’m unclear on where you noted that his case in chief only lasted an afternoon. Can you point out where this was in the trial? I also thought that the defense attorney was some big-shot that cost a fortune and not a public defense attorney. There were stories run about how his lawyer basically bankrupted him.

Fiddling with his knife, charging the inner tube, hiding the knife in a ready position without simply walking away in a huge river where he had plenty of space, means guilt!!!!! Personally, the smile indicated premeditation to me.

At one point he walks away & then turns back to return standing in their midst, even as they nonstop yelled for him to get away & leave them alone. It’s wild how many people are justifying his actions just because they think the kids were being assholes. He was a stranger who ran up & grabbed them, then stood there smiling, refusing to leave, without speaking much at all until suddenly punching a young woman in the face. True self defense doesn’t look like Mr. Miu. Quiet rage looks like Mr. Miu.
He could have walked away, asked for help with his task of the missing phone.
Fun fact, we swim in a river that many people visit. We stay away from everyone. We also don’t visit on weekends.
Passive aggressive rage.
He was trying to find his phone. The unruly mob of punks should have walked away from him.
In reality, he could have just walked way but he strikes me as sort of a hot head, just because of his actions there , and also his demeanor on the stand. Maybe that’s why his group never came to assist him . Most everyone who sees they are outnumbered, have sense enough to walk away, but not him! As a result, a kid is dead over a cell phone and goggles
Whats sad to me is all the victim blaming on social media. The kids fucked up, but did they desseve to be villified even more after suffering what fhey suffered?
I think the “looking for a cell phone” was his excuse to go over to them and start the conflict. I don’t believe him. He lied about literally everything else. He grabbed a knife and started making his way over to them.

Lied to the cops when he got arrested and lied to the detective when he got back to the station. No remorse whatsoever. It was his stupid decisions that changed a bunch of lives forever.

Personally I think he approached them because they were being loud and rowdy and not to look for any phone. The phone would never have been where he went to look for it. And then he doubled back. He just wanted to teach them a lesson and claim self defense for doing so, thinking he could get away with anything. Any other person would have had a civil conversation with the guys about the phone. But he deliberately didn’t explain himself to them or try to be civil to them. To me the true story is that he wanted to harm them and get away with it.
At least be factual. Both drunk women pushed him, and he was hit and knocked down twice before anything happened
Must disagree. Nic approached because one of the teenagers held up a phone like he was looking for. The 2 women clearly put their hands on him first, you can see that in the video. There was no justice served today.

I dont think the jury had any other option but to find him guilty. The stabbings were quite brital and he continued to stab innocent bystanders after he had left the water. Shortly after, the place was crawling with police and instead of asking for help for himself or his victims, he lied and said he had only heard about the attack. Then he lied to the nurse and said that the kids had the knife and he turned their own hand around to stab them. He knew what he had done was wrong.
It isnt self defense when you have the option of leaving the sitiation without being hurt, and when you attack people who aren't physically harming you, like the bystanders.

Mr. Miu needed to take responsibility for his actions. He knew he went too far. That is clear from his actions after the attack. Rather than take responsibility he left the scene of the crime, ditched the murder weapon, and repeatedly lied to the cops. He missed the "good citizen" mark by more than a mile. The actions of the teens obviously wasn't stellar but they were just chilling until Miu approached them. They weren't out looking for trouble. They said some dumb stuff, but THEY didn't touch anyone until the woman got hit. They were not going out of their way to find trouble or randomly attack people (even a weird dude that ran up on their group). Their blame seems be minimal.
