    I love Dave Holladay. In the early 90's I was working for an outfit called Anasazi that Larry Olsen had started. I was an instructor there working with troubled youth out in the forest of Arizona. Dave was our survival expert and he was my mentor for several weeks. While I was there, Dave gave me his Atlatl spear and thrower. I still have it to this day as a treasured item from the master.

    Interesting reference to the Mormon's "learning how to run off into the hills" and survive. Wondering if he is referring to the 1857 Utah War in which the federal government sent the U.S. Army to attack the Mormon's?

      He’s talking about the exodus from Missouri. But yes that’s also another example that fits.

    I wish I knew David Holladay... he would be able to answer some of my questions. An unmet friend died on the Marufo Vega trail in Big Bend National Park on 7/2. He was found 1/4m off the trail, near the Strawhouse and Marufo Vega junction. They found two liters of water and a liter of Gatorade with his body. Richard was the admin for the Big Bend Chat forum and is a well known member / admin of the site. Was, I guess... I traded a lot of messages with Richard and always wanted to meet him. He was a good man...
    Most of, if not all of, the long time members of the forum know that the Marufo Vega trail is off limits in the summer. On 7/2 it was 106°F / 17% rH at RGV (Rio Grande Village, it would have been worse on the Marufo Vega) by mid-afternoon. He left a note on his window that said that he planned to hike the trail from 7am to 2pm and if the person (park ranger in this case) was reading the note after 2 let authorities know.
    I can't count the times I've met people going in to places like Mule Ears, the Chimneys, etc as I was coming out. I was always carrying extra water and they were always carrying no water or very little water. I've offered water when I had it (sometimes it was in my Camelbak so not readily available to share) and they always turned me down. Why do people think National Parks are safe? If you're prepared and understand where you are and what is there then yeah... they're safe. Not perfectly safe. Just safe is you know what you're up against. Richard knew what the Marufo Vega trail was about... I don't get it...

      Michael Lloyd I can ask him a question for you.

    • @MichaelLloyd
      @MichaelLloyd 5 років тому

      @@TJackSurvival Come think of it, you can probably answer the primary question: How does one die from heat exhaustion (I'm assuming it was heat exhaustion) with 2 liters of water and a full "bottle" of gatorade on hand?

    • @TJackSurvival
      @TJackSurvival  5 років тому +2

      Michael Lloyd to answer your question. Hydration once it gets away from you it’s hard to get under control. Then your blood volume gets so low your heart goes into over drive to cool you without enough water volume. People unless they experience it just don’t drink enough water fast enough or far enough in advance. It’s not unheard of to find dead people with water in containers. Don’t ration, drink. Drink often and in large volumes with a little salt. Someone with any kind of heart problem is at risk of death under these conditions. Any kind of running type fitness will help you in the heat.

    • @MichaelLloyd
      @MichaelLloyd 5 років тому +2

      @@TJackSurvival That makes sense. There was some speculation about his heart failing. He was 52, not old but certainly not young. I don't think he was in "running condition" either. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. It's information that I will store away for future reference.
