Us kids used to bathe in the smoke from the trash fires ( brush fires scraped up from cleaning the property) to keep bugs (deerflies, mosquitos, etc.) away. It really works! I already know what this man is saying, just from long time experience out doors. :)

In some countries that is all they do. But they use blankets so the some don't escape in away it's not really inhaled. Also it opens their pores to make them sweat releasing toxins and the sweat washes their skin.

Smoke is antibacterial, anti microbial and works pretty good at masking humane scent for deer hunting. Man has been curing meats and hides with it forever. Makes a decent bug repellent as well . Not sure on biting black flies because they’re not common here . Great video

I was about a week deep and the lady asked where I came from and how long I had been up there and what I ate. I told her one week and I ate fish, grouse and berries. She couldn’t believe that people did that. I felt sad for her and hope she gets more dirt time in the future.
