I tried going to minimalist footwear / barefoot several years ago after being a runner for nearly 2 decades (and nearly injury free the whole time). I should have eased into it but I went all out because of my addictive personality. After 3 months I had terrible injuries in both legs that took me out for over 6 months. I enjoy the feeling for walking, but if I give it a try again for running it will be a small portion of my total mileage and increase a little every month.
Never would have thought of the bushcraft to sandal to primitive twist. I've had Luna's for more than 5 years and can't be without them - they are super durable as well. Kind of affirming seeing this video - THX....
I got the Bedrock Cairn Sandals in the summer and they were great for getting started and I picked up the Ipari Hana for the winter when they came out. I just hope Xero Shoes get wide sizes soon when they release their next kind of shoes.
very important topic! great discussion once again...enjoyed it alot! here in europe my favorite shoes to wear are from SOLERUNNER, they are like synthetic material moccasins. as great as they feel on your foot...my feet seem to destroy all of the shoes i´m trying. so, barefoot is the way to go in the end! thanks again for you thoughts...
I've been making my own huaraches for twelve years or more and with leather soles wet grass can be interesting. The ones I make are just the Vibram Cherry material and the only issue is when wet the paracord will stretch and the foot tends to slide (hemp cordage actually contracts when wet). I would like to find something like a xero shoe with a more aggressive sole for use in mud, snow & ice. Great video.
I went minimalist and ended up with a stress fracture in my foot, because I didn't go slow enough. Especially on concrete, it takes time to adjust (maybe just as bad off road, but different issues). It's almost like when starting to run, there are limits to how much a person increases each week. Same thing. Now that I'm used to it, I hate heels. All they do is throw you off balance, and give more torque and more serious injury when you twist an ankle.
TJack Survival Dude, when I started I couldn't even force myself to change my gate. I was brought up in the old thick padding, and run heel toe, high knees and long strides. I couldn't stop and stay more on my toes, keep a shorter stride and lean a tad forward...couldn't do any of that. I ended up running on uneven surfaces (I'm a city runner), because we sort of naturally fall into that gate when the ground is unsure. Eventually I'd start going from rough to smooth ground, back and forth, until my body relearned how to run. THEN I started to up the miles. That was when I got the fracture, and to be honest, haven't run a lot since, but all my shoes are as minimalist as I can get. At least no big heel toe drop. One really interesting thing is I've always struggled with IT band issues when I run, but slowly increasing with minimalist shoes seems to have stopped it completely. The arch on my right foot is too weak, and that style running forces it to strengthen.
TJack Survival I think that's enough! 🙂. Sadly I find the popularity has gone down a lot. It's become much harder to find any kind of selection in foot wear. At least around my area anyway. I think too many people don't understand change, or outside the norm, are too lazy to make the switch, or do it too fast and get hurt. We understand it's worth the effort, but most don't. Those Luna sandals are kinda pricey for a couple of pieces of leather and rubber, but I'm thinking of getting the leather on rubber ones for next summer. The leather should stink less than the all rubber. But what are those shoes, and do you recommend any other shoes? I have used Merrel road gloves a lot, and a pair of sauconys, but you had something more versatile.
Jim F I understand the price abs I have made many of my own, purchased DIY, versions and eventually ended up buying and using daily the Origen II from Luna. All i can do is say trust me you’re better off purchasing one of these if you’re serious about running or daily using them. I say that from experience. But you do what’s best for you. If you do purchase them please us my link in this video so that I get proof that people are seeing them from my video. If not whatever you pick I hope it’s outstanding. Respectfully me
Minimalist footwear are so much better. I have a couple pairs of lemsshoes--one for gym exercise and one for everyday wear when it's cold. I still wear chacos for sandals, but looking to get minimalist sandals soon.
Great content. I’ve been wearing minimalist shoes for 3 months and am hooked. Looking for a sandal for thru hiking (as a hiking shoe, not just camp). Want something good for slippery rocks and can handle long days with a backpack. Which shoes would you recommend? I ordered Bedrock Cairns Adventure (discount on REI), the new Bedrock Cairn pro 2 3D, Luna middle bear retro, and I have several xero shoes I love, but want a sandal with more grip than the z trail. Thanks for any suggestions and love your content.
FYI... for people who want that "trimmed to perfectly fit my foot" huarache, XERO Shoes has DIY kits that are designed to be trimmed to fit. Also, our Z-Trail sandal offers more protection than the Cloud or Z-Trek that you showed, but still with great ground feel and flexibility (and a no-thong z-pattern webbing). And be on the lookout for our running/fitness shoe, coming out in March.
Xero Shoes my xero shoes have been my go to summer time shoe for nearly 5 years. I get lots of questions/comments about them. I'm slowly but surely converting my clumpy shoed friends.
Great video Tyler, but next time try to let your guest finish speaking and not interrupt him constantly. He probably knows more about survival than you.
HOME RUN discussion guys! LOL, I asked about this on a previous video and am so stoked you decided to cover this!! I was in the same position as you were coming out of the Army in 2011, all messed up in the ankles, feet, hips, and shoulders. I had the standard, permanent, Infantry ruck forward lean etc. I heard about zero heel lift and minimalist running shoes on a website a few years ago and looked into it. The idea made sense to me big time. My first pair of minimalist shoes were a pair of leather Merrell Trail Gloves (unfortunately no longer made). My feet HURT for 6 MONTHS but I stuck with it and everything changed. I now have a great straight posture and NOTHING hurts anymore, even my knees! The thought of wearing anything with a heel lift now makes me physically ill. I sometimes have to wear heavy boots for certain tasks and it is SO WEIRD doing it. I was looking for some good zero lift hiking boots, but looking at the variety of sandals and shoes detailed here, well, I will be using those from now on. Any suggestions for a tactical/military boot with zero heel lift? Oh, and THE BIGGEST reason to NOT wear heels is because they were invented by the French! Out.
I currently wear minimalist Army boots. Literally you can just google search minimalist army bots and a bunch come up. I have them on right now actually
Cool, will do! The boots I have used in the genre are the TR's and some Vivobarefoot boots, both are actually very good, but as a gear whore I am always looking for more options! I would love to find a leather option that does not cost $650.00. Again, thanks for the awesome video and response!
I love, love, love my xero's. I have the ipari hana's and have warn them down so bad that I've glued them back together twice. I just probably need a new pair.
You would first feel stretching then pain from muscle growth. It's very similar to when you break a bone and have a cast and your muscles atrophy. Right now you are used to having your muscles and joints supported by your boots and there is a break in period during the transition period where your feet stretch and flex like they haven't since before you started wearing shoes. Just stretch and start simple with smaller distances and very quickly you will be stronger and more flexible and it will become a nonissue. But don't stop just because you get sore from being on your feet for a while. That is growth.
I've been running for 5 years barefoot and keep going. I started making my own sandals as you guys and later with Luna Sandals, to be exactly the Oso model, that for me, I believe that is the best sandal so far. Thank you both for this video 👣👣
OK, I had to go watch that video to figure it out. I thought it was my Camel wool blanket from Afghanistan but no it was something Matt had in his truck. I honestly have no clue what fabric it was. I think it was some Southern Desert Native blanket of some sort. Probably cotton but I'm not sure.
Thanks - pretty sure it was the same thing he used in several of the dual survival episodes. He hasn't said where he got it , and some other people have called it a "Manta Cloth". Again - thanks a ton for the video and replying!
Just ran 7 miles today in my Altra's, and I am thinking that I'd like to break out the Luna's with wool Injini socks and see what happens, since it's dry cold and their is not water to run in. Will report back next week.
TJack Survival that sounds great. I did a 5k hike with a 53lb ruck wearing my Altras today. I really do like those shoes. I'll try again to run in the Luna's after things warm up again.
In the summer I wear Huaraches. Either the ones I made or the Luna's, both of which you see in this video. I'm going to try out some new Bedrocks I just got as soon as the snow lifts. If it's cold I wear La Sportiva boots as I used to guide in Alaska back in the day and got hooked on them while guiding.
Check out Oliberte shoes for a formal looking shoe with a barefoot feel. They're fair trade certified, hand made, affordable, and close to barefoot feel.
Saber Tooth which ones? My jacket is a LRBushcraft Boreal Shirt. We both have Filson vests in these videos and that jacket he has is a wool filson. My hats an REI Wool hat. Those are Levi's and Kuhl pants. The shoes are in the discussion box above this comment.
I have some bedrocks that I actually wore for most of today. It is finally dry enough and warm enough for that. I still plan on running with them soon. I'll get back to you on them.
TJack Survival Thanks! I just ordered a pair yesterday. I am currently running the xero Amuri Venture but was hoping to find something a little quieter on concrete with possible some more padding. Runners knee!
Ya that's no good. IF you want more padding I'd suggest the Luna Origen. It takes just a little while to break in but I have been smashing mine into pavement on daily runs for almost two years now. The other Luna's are a bit to soft IMHO, because they smash out so fast. But the Origen being made from a real winter snow tire just can't be beat, and it is a bit more pad. lunasandals.refersion.com/c/82324
TJack Survival I actually had a pair of luna Leadville pacers in that I was going to use for road and trail because of how soft they were. The size was larger than expected and the logo on the toe post was scratchy so I sent them back. I was looking at the Venado 2.0 or the Origen to try next since they revised the sewing on the toe post. The new Origens have leather lifestyle laces....you use leather laces for daily runs? Thanks!
I have leather and synthetic origins. In Utah because I run daily through water and high heat, I prefer the synthetic because of water shrinking and expanding the leather. If you are running any kind of long distances I honestly would suggest the synthetic origins with the ankle strap. That way you don't have to constantly stop and adjust leather and you can run right through rivers and water with zero issues. But leather also is kinda cool and that is what I use for hiking or walking because it's soft.
Honestly no. I did however get them the first time I ran 7 miles bare foot. I've got tough feet from doing bare foot stuff though so that may change things a bit. But in the humidity I still can get blisters if my feet are wet for a long time.
I absolutely hate a thong between my toes so I wear Chaco or Teva sandals in warm weather. I'm a gimp, from a stroke 9 years ago & ('m 67 years old,, so I don't run. But, I like correct posture.
