Kristof in the Crosshairs: A Blowgun Showdown in the Amazon | The New York Times

- Juan Kunchikuy, a hunter-turned-naturalist at the Yachana Lodge in Ecuador,
uses his blowgun to spear a papaya on the head of New York Times columnist
Nicholas Kristof. The blowgun has a range of up to 150 feet. "It's better
than a shotgun, because it's silent," Mr. Kunchikuy explained. "You can
shoot repeatedly if you miss the first time."

Congrats on showing the first and only example of honest journalism ever from the NYT.
no one:
reporter: how long does it take for someone to die if they get shot with this
A lot of people would have asked that.
@@selfactualizer2099 yea
thank you very much for teaching us how to make the darts mr.kunchikuy
faster than using sponge or tobacco leaves
0:22 - cant believe that he really farted on television
it is the piranha!!! He is not using it for poisoning, but to cut a small notch, in case the animal or papaya tries to remove the dart, the tip will break.
@localumberjacks
having met juan and being taught how to use this specific blowgun by him, i can tell you personally, he can kill something from WAY father away. he got me to target the papaya from about 15 ft on my first try.
VERY VERY FANTASTIC
pffft....right in the eye
was this cut in the wrong order? i think he scores it with the piranha teeth so that the fluffy stuff will hold better to it. is this right?
OK-I'm ready. How does one catch the piranha??
Question is, how do you make a 3 meter long blowgun? It has to be perfectly straight and the inside polished, wthout any imperfection.
3 ways. You can use something already relatively hollow, as in the case of bamboo. You can drill out the pith of something with a soft center and hard walls in a jig to keep the blowgun steady as you go. You can also split a straight length of wood, with a pith as before, and carve the blowgun from the inside out, then wrap it in sinew and glue it back together to form an airtight seal so that it'll work.
In Borneo the Dayaks tribe have "sumpit" blowgun.
he is amazing with that blowgun funny accent
you have a large set, do you understand what I mean?
@MedievalHistoryLuver Cool, thx!
Can anyone write down what wood the blowgun is of for me please. He says at 0:40 , but I cant understand...
askassk palm wood
i think the reason he cuts halfway through the poison darts is becuase it will break off into the animal
where can i get a blowgun like that
cool
@askassk sound like he said palm wood
ah thx
Love the guy doing
the shooting but the targets little dense no sense. 😁
What kind of poison do you think he was using on the dart?
maybe from berries or from poison Dart frogs
@@alfo3576poison from tree sap they boil it down
What a huge blowgun
Bery good
Can u use it in meele???
If it's made durable enough, yeah, there is evidence of people mounting bayonets on blowguns to make them double as spears.
hahaha
wow that is one brave man lol
why it must be so long
2 reasons, the diameter of the bore is small, so making it that long helps to suppress the small popping sound by fitting more air in the blowgun. The other reason is that the length helps the dart accelerate by fitting as much of the volume of air in one's breath as you can. The longer the dart is accelerated for, the faster it's going and the more accurate it is.
it's more accurate and more faster
@askassk
palmwood
he obv made them
2:40 was so fake ahah
@askassk if you're interested in how these traditional blowpipes are made, this BBC documentary clip with Ray Mears is excellent

that was fake as hell
im cool
Can you still see this after a dec6?
It's amazing how little Man thinks life is worth, and test it against a dart from a blow gun. What if the guy happens to coff at the time blowing his gun? That dart would have perforated the skull easily and get inside his brain (hopeful;y wouldn't have stuck anything inside...it's empty anyway!!). At least a shield he should have worn!
