This is part 4 of My Journey to Primitive The Les Stroud Story. A story of some of the people who taught me primitive and how I came to Primitive Survival.
My Journey to Primitive part 4 with Les Stroud of Survivor Man at the Global Bushcraft Symposium in Northern Canada 2019
I’m gonna be trying to join the Air Force SERE specialists in a few months. I got cancer in highschool so I’ve had to put it off for five years now but I’m ready now. I can’t wait it’s one of the first things I’ve been excited about in years, first glimmer of hope in my life. My father asked me what I wanted to do in life when I was younger and I told him I want to be like les stroud, I was told I need to think realistically. 13 years later I’m pursuing my dream. Thank you sir
Devin Mchorse Chase your dreams. Just don’t do it at the expense of your future. In the military that’s an option that’s realistic.
@@TJackSurvival Yes Sir! Keep up the good work with the channel!
So... If anyone has not checked out Les Stroud's newer music videos I highly recommend you do so ! I was impressed ! .. No... blown away... ! This is a man of MANY talents !
sharon olsen Excellent
I have learned MUCH from Les Stroud over the years and I am STILL learning from him and now about him. THANK YOU for this interview.
Thank you for watching and sharing it!
Less has captured the Hart and soul ot a dieing tradition love his work he has gave so many people hope and faith
The boys an me Rose I agree
Les...you told my story I am half native and grew up in the high mountains of Colorado 10k up. That plus What my dad taught me set my course. I am looking towards 70 years old and still ..."in the woods". My pack is currently under my bed and in the morning...on my way again! At this age I do take some "old man comforts" I still forage. Who knows, someday I wont come back down. resently we found a friend named Rich...he had a smile and died what he liked doing. Great interview...thanx Les...hope to run into you some day to share a meal...from forage of course!
Old age comforts.... a friend of mine shared a story of his Appalachian hike... "everyone was telling me how to prepare and how to eat and talking about pack weight" he paused for a bit "every morning I would crack 2 eggs and fry some baccon... then drink a light beer" his story was great when he described people he was with eating a 'bar's looking at his cast iron pan and beer
al bugnfront “he had a smile” U r so amazing I hope you lived a good life Wish you nothing but blessings ,Thank u for this
Great words from both teachers. Thank you for filming 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of the best bush-men out there.
rex woodcutter Agreed
That was awesome! Thanks for the entertainment TJack and Les Stroud!
DJ White Sup Cuz!
Wazzup?!
Love Les I lived in the wilderness for a year in 94 after a bad devorce grew up practicing survival for pleasure always went to town to work but life I lived in the no where. Grew up like that my Dad being a vet who was always waiting for the end of civilization. First time I seen his show a friend had cornered me said you have got to see this it is like seeing you on TV. Made me watch him I instantly seen a kindred spirit seen every show now learned a lot smiled laughed some knowing I'd experienced a similar situation or because I related to what he said or was doing. First show I saw he was eating lilly pad the root I remember I fell out of my chair laughing at ten I'd tried to eat the stuff I new instantly that face it tasted horrible the starch is over powering I remembered it and I could share in his discomfort. I could never be on TV like you less being the hermit I am but love your work. You made my kids see I am cool 😎 in a way I never could. Because of you my kids took an interest in me. Infact at eight my son lit the back yard on fire one winter showing of for his friends that he could start a fire with sticks. Just thanks less you do more than you think with what you do.
Paul Meacham everyone that likes this ends up having a similar story! It’s awesomeness
Wow. I can relate so much with Les. The wilderness is my true home also. I moved to the Kentucky wilderness and never looked back to my old life. Now I’m truly alive.
Wow!! Les Stroud ... I mean .. LES STROUD ! I better not get started because I would make one of those long winded comment posts that nearly NO one has the energy or the interest to read.. but DAMN .. ! LES STROUD .... ! I clicked so fast it was crazy when I saw this in my feed ! LONG time fan... ( Oh .. and I will just say one thing.. I was NOT disappointed in the least to know he grew up watching THE SAME SHOWS I WATCHED .. with rapt awe.. ) And then as an adult when the Survivor Man series started... the same rapt awe ... This indeed a treat ! ok.. this is getting long already.. and this is the super crazy short version ... ; >
sharon olsen Thank you for your comments, I do read all of them and comment on all that need replies.
I learned the bow and hand drill because this guy and sent me on a path learning these skills so much respect for this man because he made the topic accessible to the masses pre UA-cam to a kid who had the interest but did not know where to get the information. Thank you Les Stroud.
Steve G he taught me the fire piston. He’s changed a lot of lives for the better.
Listening to Les in this interview reinforces my respect for his philosophy and lifestyle. I have used his "teachings" in my times in the bush, and in my comments on videos where bushcraft/survival skills were improperly expressed by armchair "professionals".
As stated by Mors, Cody, Les and others..."the more you know, the less you need"...the wisest words of outdoor wisdom.
camping buddy Actually listening in an interview format without the fluff and Hollywood interruptions is the goal with this series. Thanks for watching
@@RustG07 You sir, are the armchair bushcrafter !
You have obviously not read his books or watched his survival series, where no cameramen or backup were present as he tackled situations from the Canadian Arctic to the tip of Patagonia.
Your ignorance is evident in your nonsensical protestations of a true champion of the bushcraft field who has "done it" in the real world.
I hesitate to reply to your juvenal comments, but since you seem to gave addressed your comments to me, then I say to you, " Read a book or two, before you show to the world your lack of knowledge." It is embarrassing.
Les I enjoyed this video very much . You are the real deal in me book. I have watched all your videos of surviorman and looked forward every one of them. I really was lost when you quit doing them. Stay well and God bless you Jim
sharp knife well said sir.
As far as @rustyGG he obviously doesn’t know Mr. Strouds accomplishments. And also probably prefers bear grylls. Lol.
If I had to choose someone to survive with, it be my pops or Mr. Stroud. Les is a damn good teacher and his knowledge of the outdoors is staggering.
I’d like to see him do more, and perhaps even try going to places such as Australia, and learn the aboriginal way of survival; or Alaska, and learn how the Inuit survive.
I think that would be amazing.
We need more survival man shows.
Josh Leal oh absolutely agreed
I took my daughter to see Les In Modesto and she still talks about him choosing her out of the audience to ask him a question. Afterwords he Had an autograph signing and photo session with the fans. I’ll never forget how kind and genuine he was to us! I love this interview, Great video🏕
tutu silver he’s great people
I'm very proud of you Les,I have always enjoyed watching you're videos, and I personally like the way you talk with such emotions, please carry on
Well Said :)
WTF, Les Stroud is utterly awesome. Straight up real McCoy. Decent, honourable, honest, human being. There are very few on TV.
Absolutely riveting. I’m not even half way through but I cannot look away. Les is such an interesting man. Thank you for this, he mentioned this clip on his new podcast!
I’m happy to hear that! Can you let me know which episode so I can go listen? Thanks.
@@TJackSurvival It’s his latest, thee “Desert Dave” Holladay!
@@MichaelEMJAYARE excellent I’ll go listen
I used to love his Survivorman series! Lots of outdoorsmen didn't like Les. But I always did. Anything that gets people more confident in the outdoors, is okay by me. I'm not a survivalist, but a camping guy with considerable survival skills, and woodsman skills. I have travelled thru deserts and of course I'm from Ontario where Les is from. Part of the fun of traveling is learning the different area's, and Les really touched on much of that in his shows. So when I've done my own travels, at least you could see a decent example of how he lived in those environments with next to nothing. Dealing with things like Scorpions as an Ontario boy is no small feat if you're not used to it. Or heading off to the Amazon Jungle to survive. Or even up to the Boreal Forrest, it's all different and the wildlife Les has gone out of his way to show in the area's should always be commended. Hats off to Les!
I have always liked Les’s work and approaches. His respect for his teachers further cements that like.
Survival Silly I absolutely agree
Of nearly all the survivalist shows Ive seen on TV, he, David Canterbury and Cody Lundean are the only ones I take seriously. Loved the survivor man series!
craig cook He’s probably one of my top favorite for sure
Survivor Man was a classic! Loved it. Ray Mears is another one to add to the list. Check him out if you haven't already.
Matt Graham and Joe Teti are also great outdoorsmen but LES STROUD is the standard that all other should strive to be!
Les recommend this channel in his live chat today
dOCTOR sPOCK ya I saw that. He’s good people! Thanks for dropping by.
Thanks for the interview it was awesome
Tracy Cannaday thank you for watching
Very, very, cool..... You can feel the passion for what he does in his voice. 40 minutes well spent.
Chesapeake Hammock and Outdoors Excellent!
This was excellent! Really enjoyed hearing Les and his story. I have always respected him and his approach to the wilderness, now even more so. Thank you for doing this interview!
WayPoint Survival its important to know people on a deeper level. It changes your perspective about them.
I love Les Stroud!
Hey man thanks for watching! Hope all is well. Say hi on FB one of these days
Marlin Perkins was one of my childhood heroes. His wingman Jim used to get all the dirty jobs. "Jim go in that brush and capture that lion".
It's really a shame this doesn't have more views.. maybe les would share it!!✊️🔥✌️💚
I appreciate that. He did reach out and used some of my footage in a video he made. It is what it is.
You are an inspiration Les
You have saved my sanity les. You have always inspired me.
What an awesome interview. Les is a bad ass survivalist. Much respect!
Cowboys Crew Thanks and I agree
Profound....this will change someone’s life in a positive way. Well done! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Chris Burley Here is to hoping. I know he drastically changed mine.
Looking forward to your video that includes Mors K. 👍🏻
Chris Burley I need to take my time to do that right so it may be a month or two before I can release. FYI
Plain true and honest, entertaining as well as professionally arranged. Really enjoyed that video! Thanks a lot TJack
Doc Holiday exactly what I was looking for! Thank you
Awesome video Thank you. I've wanted to know all of his background since the 1st.time I watched and got hooked on LES STROUD. The man with the mind to do do do.. . Really great style of video. I love for the person to be able too be free and speak on how they feel and what they want us to know how Mr.LES was feeling and how he feels looking back on it all through his lifes eyes.
mmalands Allen Thank you. That is what drove this whole project of my journey to primitive. It’s imperative that their words are their own. That’s the exact essence of what I tried to share in his words without crazy Hollywood edits. Thank you for watching and sharing. Respectfully me
I am from the East Coast of Canada and about Les's age. I was always escaping to the wilderness when I was a child because of my shitty home life so I understand where he is coming from. I have a lot of respect for Les and miss watching his series on tv.
I miss this guy dearly, and his survival content. He was the very reason that at the age of 27, depressed and lost, that I began to embarked on wild adventures, both here and in the Malaysian jungle, and through that I discovered a huge part of myself. I was subscribed to SMTV, but that seems to have gone. I understand that he can't make shows forever......... but damn do I wish he could.
Michael Buvoltz I agree and kinda wish he’d do a UA-cam channel
I'm late to this party but WOW! I have to echo the rest of the comments here, in that what you captured is more valuable than gold!
I had a really hard time picking just one bit to reference but I about lost it when Dave talks about being prepared for the worst but enjoy all the rest.
I have a tough time making balance between preparing/war gaming and actually living.
Thanks for a great encouragement!
Now, it's time for me to go finish something! (I said I had trouble picking just one)
Matthew Ellisor Hey Matt thanks for watching, sharing, and commenting. That helps spread the information which helps me to make more of these. Respectfully me
Anything les does, we’ll watch
You and Me both.
How have I not seen this video? Les is my all time fav!
Come on in watch, share!!!
Real good to see, thanks for making this film. I remember as a kid seeing someone on tv that spent time in the wild and I couldnt believe my eyes.."someone that does what I do". Blew my mind that I wasnt alone. " I didn't have any books". That was 30 years ago.
HalfQ it’s like finding a long lost brother huh!
I'd pay four times your wage to have the opportunity to learn survival from you... watching your Survivorman videos convinced me that you're thre right teacher
He teaches classes. Or you can go learn from the people who taught him.
No matter who your where. Your travel. Been joy to learn.
"Prepare for the Worst and then enjoy the rest". 👍🏻 A profound statement.
"Do it from the hiils". 👍🏻😉
Thank you Tyler, Les and Desert Dave for expressing your experience with the Spirit of our Great Mother.
Tyler, you have tons of footage. As Desert Dave said, Be Creative. I will thoroughly enjoy seeing and learning from it (and of course passing it on). Good job on this vid Bud.
JR MTG thank you. I’ll edit as fast as I can without wrecking the content. Respectfully me
@@TJackSurvival Of course you will brother, that's why I continue to view your content. 👍🏻😁 Thanks again.
I hope to meet les one day. Hey hey, my my....In my life.., he is the pioneer of survival. I have learned so much from him. Thank you so much for sharing. Love you brother!
Love it,cause you got Les,survival now days is a priority for conscientious people wherever you are, also THANK YOU TWO THUMBS UP!!!!
Jack Snavely Thanks Jack!
Out of all the "survival shows" out there... I've always preferred Les Stroud's show.
No Hollywood fluff, just down to earth "how to", and what to do in " X" situation. Etc.
Haha, love the comedy he tossed in! Just subscribed!
Yeah, Les is great. I wish we could see more of him in survival situations these days.
Wow! You captured gold there. Now I like Les even more. Well done.
ANXIETOR Thanks! More is on the way
Great Great video! Thanks for sharing everything with us about your travels to where you are now. Amazing story. Love all your stuff man.
Eric Hensley hey Eric thanks for watching and the kind words
Thank you for this incredible series TJ. I have to admit, hearing Les' life story has been rather fascinating. I can relate to quite a few things actually. :-)
Australian Survival Instructors It was epic to sit there and listen in person as well. Really awesome to just listen and ask whatever I wanted. Truly a privilege
Wow man! Les said some things here I've NEVER heard him say! TJ you captured gold with this interview brother!
Reallybigmonkey1 Thanks man I am very lucky.
Hey Brother😂figured you might be here too!
True. And basically all he had to do is let the dude talk.
In all my travels, I seek knowledge and truth. Love you guys!!
Absolutely awesome. Thanks for sharing
Awesome job Tyler. I am envious you got to meet the folks you did.
BOMBPROOF BUSHCRAFT me too strangely enough
Finally confirmed his first name is Leslie. Good to know.
Leslie Andrews LOL! A fellow Leslie. Excellent
another great video. So many things I learned about Les "survivor man" Stroud that I havent known. Very nice and thank you for making this.
Bushcraft & survival Slovenia he’s outstanding huh! Thanks for Watching
I miss Les Stroud series of adventures but after seeing some of his Bigfoot hunting ones towards the end , I had wondered if he was going to call it quits. I know that would have shook me up what Les has seen. Great shows and skill sets. I can't say enough. Thanks TJack.
friarfox hey thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
6 or 7 years ago I spoke to Les by email. We went back and forth talking about music. Great Canadian!!!
When you see a video long like this with no cuts, but you're absolutly hooked about the stuff, then there some real characters talking.
Timo Steinleitner Exactly! It’s like a good Joe Rogan podcast.
So enjoyed this , a fan of all, you all rock
I wish I myself had better focus when younger but that wasn’t the case. But never to late, thanks for all you guys do to help us be more successful in OUR journey, rock on
Les is a national treasure
I agree.
Sir , its an honor to see this video, what a great man of humble. Title of a song im doing, hehe
Thanks for watching Thomas.
Congrats Tyler, this is more than an interview, this is a document that will grow in value as time passes. You are onto something great, it might not be for big audiences but it is great.
Thanks a lot for taking us along.
Alejandro A If one person gains value from this I’m happy. Even if it’s just me. ;)
I love Les Stroud. He is such a sweet person. I would love to sit down and just listen to hes amazing stories about wilderness. I want to meet this man someday and shake hes hand :)
Les was one of the first guys I started watching when I got into survival stuff. I was blown away when I found out he did all the filming himself. He set the standard for real reality TV and he ruined me ( in a good way). Also If you never heard David Holidays story of his first time teaching hand drill you have to find it. Great content.
James Baldwin that’s the number one video in my series here on this channel.
@@TJackSurvival That's to funny. One of my favorites. That was how I was first introduced to David Holiday. What a great story. Especially for guys like me. When you see someone who is a pillar of the survival and primitive skills mess up so bad it lets you know it happens to the best but we learn and grow just like they did.
James Baldwin you might want to look on this channel at the play list and watch the whole series. Yes they/we all fail more often than we like to admit for sure.
@@TJackSurvival I definitely will and I subscribed too.
James Baldwin Thank you
I love your shows. I just randomly found your and instantly subscribed. You rock!!!
Thanks I appreciate that!
Growing up with the asphalt and pollution in L.A. motivated me to lead a life outdoors. It also gave me a healthy respect for both two and four legged predators.
Excellent!
God, I miss you.
Awesome series Tyler, love those stories from great people,SO Nice ‼️‼️
Hey Jurgen, I appreciate you watching and commenting. I’ve got the last interview of Larry Dean Olsen. I just need to go film with one more man and I can post it. Hopefully before this spring.
@@TJackSurvival that sounds great Tyler, looking forward to it😃
Some great stuff in these interviews.
Thanks for completing this. ;-)
cheers,
- Martin
PineMartyn Thanks Boss. I’m very lucky
Thank you.
Awesome interview, I also grew up watching Wild Kingdom, Tarzan, Jacques Cousteau, and Wild World of Sports,(they would have hunting, fishing and mountain climbing). Then go out in the woods and try to do what they did, sometimes with disastrous results. Thanks for posting this, it's given me motivation to practice my skills today.
John Deans I think we all are motivated in some way by TV’s adventures
Great stuff. I love his references to many of my TV influences as a child. His story definitely resonates with me. Thank you Tyler for sharing this with us.
Michael Baldwin Thank you for watching this and sharing it for me.
Enjoyed the video, and am a fan of the Survivorman Man series. I'll be sure to check out your other videos.
James Gunter thanks James!
Jacques Cousteau... my fav. Omaha's Wild Kingdom also kept me glued to the TV. Thanks for sharing Les...
Thanks for watching Jim
Great interview! Thank you.
Hundredth Meridian thank you for watching.
WOW....Jaque Custoe, Tarzan, & Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. My childhood influences in a nutshell. Throw in Grizzly Adams & Swiss Family Robinson for a little spice
rude dogg Outdoors Awesomeness isn’t it
I know right! ? ... I wanted to live in the Swiss Family Robinson house SO bad when I was a kid.. oh heck.. I want to live there now ... LOL
ME TOO!
I did an illustrationof the treefort in swiis after readi g the book barely! I did not do well at school..that the teacher accepted as my book report 5th. Grade, and hung it proudly in main hall. Im an acclaimed artist I now paint, and live the outdoors everyday!😐, but as you can see my spelling hasn't
Mproved much😑since 5th. Grade..
No kidding...Jesus this guy and I have so much in common....
Just awesome.
thank you
Love what you said about that. Last winter I just decided to start all of my wood stove fires with flint and steel. So easy just to grab a match, but I stuck with it
I’m willing to bet now you have mad skills with flint and steel
@@TJackSurvival I'm better than when I started!
@@CRJines that’s the goal
Back in grade school, about 50 years ago, I found a book in the library called Bushcraft (it's much older than any that I can find on Amazon). My memory stinks but I think it was written by an Australian. I read that book cover to cover more than once. I tried some of the things (snares, water collection, etc) that I read about in the woods behind our house. In all this time I have no doubt that my "successes" are greatly amplified in my mind. The best I'll offer here is that snares shouldn't be set casually ie there should be a need for it. They catch things (like cats) that you would rather not catch. About 20 years ago I fell in love with the desert in Big Bend country. I can't say that I know much about survival in the desert but I'd like to. This was very informative. I see references to "unnamed" individuals in the comments. I'm not sure who the references are about... the video answers the questions I need answered.
Michael Lloyd great story. Also it’s ok to ask. If we know we’ll answer, and yes often times those consultants are people like David Holladay and it’s important that people know that.
@@TJackSurvival I'm sure you know this but there are a lot of "survival" channels that are more about gear than surviving (who can carry all that stuff?). Your channel and this series is like an index to the best info.
Have you seen this channel: ua-cam.com/channels/AL3JXZSzSm8AlZyD3nQdBA.htmlfeatured
The creator doesn't talk but if you click the closed caption symbol you'll see narration. I'd be interested to know if you know who he is. If the link doesn't work - the channel is Primitive Technology
faultroy I’d love to read that
@faultroy That looks like a great book too. I'll check it out. The book I have (somewhere) is Bushcraft by Richard Graves. I found it on Amazon in paperback and I was able top "look inside" so I'm 100% sure that was it.
So cool. I had the same influences from TV, and did much the same thing on the ranch in the Texas Hill Country, that I grew up in.
Excellent!
Glad les is still out there
Awesome interview. So good I think I’ll watch it again. I miss Survivorman. I wish he was back on TV.
Can't be 100% sure because tv is always changing, but last I checked he still makes survivor man on the science channel. It just takes a long time to make the show so it goes several years between seasons and each season is only like 7 episodes or less.
Nathan Whaley Excellent!
Simply outstanding. Thank you.
pennyghost pennyghost Thank you
Brilliant interview, top notch
Rude Thank you
I have so much respect for this guy. Thanks for uploading this and good luck on your journeys! Subbed
Casey Hood Excellent thank you! Do check out the play lists on this series. I think you’ll like it
Amazing interview, man! Thank you for sharing this with us! Les Stroud is my inspiration for wanting to learn more skills out in the woods. As well as, wanting to teach survival skills to others that are interested in the topic. I started making survival shelters aka Forts in the woods even before I knew what survival was. It definitely is my passion to be out in the wilderness.
Jason McDaniel We all in our own way are alike in that matter.
All I can say is!, What A great Video!, Very VERY Well done Indeed!
Loki Von Brandis Thanks Loki
Excellent series. Les is down to earth and I would love to talk music with him for a few hours.
Buckshot you and me both
A fellow Torontonian, now that inspires me!
John Borland I bet he’d be happy to hear that
Awesome interview! I really enjoyed this video. Les Stroud, and David Holliday were two of the people who really inspired me to study primitive survival skills, and bushcraft. It's really fantastic to learn more about the story behind the the man, and the t.v. show.
They were both very influential in bringing me to exactly where I am right now. I’m sure many people can say that about them.
It's always learning time 24/7
Fact!
This is fantastic. Great job!
cachevalleyprepper Thanks!!!
Great video.....thanks.
Richard Siegler Thanks
This is awesome !!!
I agree. It was really cool doing this interview and just sitting there listening to the whole thing.
Les has always been one of my favorites...... My brother and I would watch his show when I was 7 or 8 , then we'd go to the neighborhood creek to play survivor man.
We would sharpen up sticks and try to make traps for catching birds ECT 😂😂..... He truly was a positive influence throughout my childhood and I wish I could watch the show again for old times sake.
Amazing
I am sooo glad you aren't a German Physicist hiking in the woods ;)
That makes two of us
Great stuff, loved it 👍👍
RickT Outdoor/Adventure thank yuh
Superb TJ.
john crawford sr. Thank you John.
You are SURVIVOR MAN....... You are truly amazing Les Stroud.... I'm 55 years old and I love my mountain state of Wild and Wonderful West Virginia, the mountain state loves you sir.
I have a lot in common with Mr. Stroud. Could be a Canadian thing. Tv influences for me were The Forest Rangers and Adventures In Rainbow country.
