Hey I just wanted to say thank you for making such good videos and reviews I have been building a MST and knowing what to get is because of you. I’m waiting on the futaba 4pm and gyd450. Your awesome thanks for the drifting tips and tricks.
Beautiful, Just the video I was looking for. Have looked into it on and off over the years and decided today to try using my 1/8th buggy with a set of 1/8 truck rims that I'm never going to glue up and went to a local carpark, Set up 4 cones for a layout similar to your 'elongated C' and had a ball. Was clumsy but ridiculous fun, Now I'm looking for a drift car. Was a bit lost in the 2 vs 4 thing but you've given a lovely, Thoughtful rundown of pros and cons so I'll be going 4wd for my situation. Thank you
Love your videos. Thanx for all the explanations. Now I bought a Team Magic E4D-MF. Next an MST will come to home for indoor drifting. Greetz from german crawler dudes!
Excellent video, thank you very much, made my decision a lot easier! PS. Even after reading different forums, your video has put everything into perspective!

Just waiting to hear back from the dealer on availability for parts, as the talk of the town is yokomo parts is easier to come by...
Picked up a MST RMX 2.0 R35 Skyline about a week ago after countless hours of research. Main factor in the purchase was my small apartment, which the MST navigates with ease. Beautiful car and well worth the investment. Nice vid on the comparison between awd and rwd.
And i loved the video, i dont have much flat surface near home so you summed it up for me, now is not the right time to buy a Rwd even tho it would be fun, thanks man appreciate it
Sir, thank you...nicely done and informative...I am in exactly the position you described...and much like other forms or RC , where you drive does often play a huge role in which vehicle to choose.
@@RoadsideRC no question for now I'm going to continue researching before I buy a take a look at options in my area for groups that I go to learn more about the hobby in person. But I'll have to wait quarantine stuff to end before that so it might be a while
I just got the redcat today. I do have a garage but play in the driveway as well. Price is huge for me as I have a son into rc as well. Good video. Thanks. Subscribed.
That is awesome! Even better to hear it is a father-son thing! That is what has pushed me into RC! The car has been solid for me so far. Grab you a cheapo set of rubber tires to throw on it for fun also. I have a few other videos of the Thunder Drift. One on some suspension tuning/alignment. ua-cam.com/video/rltNOBYUIQ8/v-deo.html Another on putting rubber tires on it. ua-cam.com/video/nKa095QKp4s/v-deo.html
I think if you had a track marked or some traffic cones then you might find the street more of a fun surface with those obstacles. I drive my TT-02D in the parking lot at work and powersliding around the curbs at the end of the aisles at full speed is super fun. Like you said, RWD for precision and control, and then AWD for all-out full throttle slides.
Thank you! This was super helpful. I don’t have a track near me or a suitable garage. So I’m going to be looking at parking lots and the AWD does look a little more fun for that purpose.
Great video! For sure the rear wheel drive car is smoother! Just look at those endpoints in the front wheel when it’s drifting, pretty hard to have that much counter steer with an all wheel drive.your absolutely right though, if I were to get into competition drifting 2 wheel drive is the way to go, but if wanted a more multi purpose car that can do it all pretty good including rallying and off road drifting the cheaper all wheel drive is the much less expensive (sometimes) and better way to go. My self, I enjoy multi use cars more than more focused single purpose vehicles! Great job on this!👊🏼💯👍🏻
Very real overview, currently still trying to decide if I want to get the MST Rmx, love the way it slides!. Right now I have an Rs4 I might covert to rwd, and a Madspeed DK thats pretty modified, I’ve seen your car a few times now so I subscribed 😂.
Thank you! Yes, I looked into converting a few cars to RWD from AWD, but it sure looked like a lot of work and expense. Especially when you can get a Sakura D5S kit for around $100!
thank you for the awesome video, really helped me make a decision. i wanted to pick up a fun cheap drift car for my gf and i to throw around from time to time definitely going awd
That is right! I messing around now with the Thunder drift's suspension alignment. See if I can manipulate it a little to change the drifting style with it.
Great vid mate. I just picked up an e10 for doing exactly that drifting on the street fun so that was a nice confirmation i didnt screw up. Gunna throw in a yeah racing suspension and drivetrain hop up kit eventually and do some upgrades.
Just found this. Have you ever tried to lock the rear differential on the redcat? I would think that would add to the control, and smoothness of the drift. Great video. Thank you!
70 year old newbie here. Was into this Losi Micro 20 years ago. Watched my son go threw the car's and Nitro monster trucks. We had fun. I'm bored now. Was thinking of jumping back in but getting lost in the choices. My wish list is Brushless, Lipo, maybe blue tooth, must wheelie on demand. Fast, parts available, durable, tunable. Was thinking rwd for simplicity???? The AWD has more capability??? Saw a vid on the new Traxxes gravedigger and it impressed me but kinda big. Also liked there Bandit VXL 70MPH. Like the Mini T2 brushless RTR. Not planning on racing. Just want to mess around the house or take to a skate park. Might get 2 full setups so I can have a friend or neighbor over and sit in the driveway and chase each other around the grass and the concrete or out in the street. Might be fun to take over two a friends house for some cheap entertainment and a few beers. I also have a real dune buggy and go to the dunes. Be nice to have something to play with when my real buggy breaks down. I'm feeling lost in all these new wonderful technology choices. Money is not the deciding factor but don't want to go overboard ether. I figure If I get 2 similar set up's. I have less spare parts and no one will claim unfair advantage. hehehe Except that I might have more practice..... Maybe I could just ease into it again and pass some of the stuff on to the grandkids as I get more familiar? What Say You? Enjoyed your vid. Nice editing. Sorry for the rambling.
Awesome! Sounds like you have been giving this some thought! A few suggestions from me: Go AWD, skip RWD. It really is just much more capable, especially when you started talking about the dunes. You will be looking for a basher vehicle - so rule out drift, crawling, etc. Then, it comes down to budget and size of the space you will run in. If you think you will be in the dunes more, I would suggest something like the Arrma Kraton 6S. This is an 1/8 scale truggy that floats over big obstacles and handles really well. Throw on some paddle tires, and you will be amazed what it can do. If you think you will be more around the house, you might want to step it down some (not sure how big your yard is). Check out something like the Arrma Typhon 3S - this is literally one of my favorite vehicles. Handles well, nice and durable, and moderate on the price scale. When you go to the dunes, you might be able to put some paddle tires on it and still have a blast.
Mate what an awesome video that will help so many people 👍 It helped me two I'm by no means new to rc I have a lot lol I'm not saying how many incase the wife sees 😂 Drift wise though I'm slowly getting into it, but I did going gor the tt01e I didn't buy it as a drifter as such I bought it because I wanted the euro racing truck, but I also made it into a fun skyline r34 drifter.. Your definitely right you just can't beat a proper 2wd drifter for perfect surface drifting but if that's not all your really be doing going the other route of a 4wd and drift conversion is good, then you can also convert it back and get those high speed uses around the street. Happy rcing bud, your by far one of my favourite channels 👍
I really appreciate your kind words! Thank you very much for that! You said it great. The RWD drifter is great for a specific location. If you are not there - then maybe something else (and cheaper!) is better!
This is really informative I didn't even know rear wheel drifting was a thing I have been drifting for about a year on my own and I have been using 4 wheel drive tto2 and other tamiya rally chassis just winging it very cool might try rear wheel👍🏻😀👊💯
Thank you! I really do suggest it. I find it very entertaining. Check around and see if there are any drift tracks near you. It is so much better when you get door-to-door with someone else!
That really helped me man, I’m from England and at my house we don’t have a garage so I have to drive on the asphalt. It’s also really helpful because I don’t even have a drift car and I didn’t want to spend £200 + on a car love the vid 👍👍👍😀😀😀💯💯💯💯
Really good video... Clarify me a lot, about drift cars. Before buy one, there are several questions to answer. Where will you ussually run them, how many times in which surface and with whom? Do you want to win ... always...jeje. It is fun, also, the process of buying. Keep making so clear videos. Luis... from Spain, Madrid.
I run a mentoring program using the Redcat Lightning drift. We run either in a gym (indoor basketball court) or the lunch room (smooth concrete) the Redcats are not easy to control but thebchildren have LOTS of fun! They are ages 10 to 14 years old. It was nice to see that you weren't using a drift box. It gives me hope. This was VERY helpful for me. Can I use portions of this video to show my participants about drifting?
That is awesome - really awesome you got a program like that going. Yes - you are welcome to use this video. Where are you located? I would be interested to see more about this program.
Good info! Man I wish I knew all this before I bought the TT02d. Thanks to your video, I might go broke again because I'm checking out some MST's right now.
Ha! I get it! Hey - if the TT-02D is doing what you want it to - then enjoy it!!! Different vehicles for different uses and driving. The Yokomo YD2 base kit, or the MST RMX2.0S kit are both right around $200. You could take all the electronics from your TT-02D and be up and running!
What you showed tia on your video is a great example of what we can expect in selecting a drift car. I was looking at drift cars 6 or 7 years ago when I assumed AWD was all that was being offered. I tried one out at an RCX show that I beloved was based on an AWD HPI platform and it was fun. I eventually settled on my TC4 knowing asphalt parking lots were all I would have access to and I could always swap tires back to a grip car when I wanted a grip car. I had made my own pvc tires as well as buying a set that were supposed to have a little better grip for asphalt. I never really got the drifting down to a perfection which I attributed to not understanding weight bias or maybe running a gyro but it sure was fun. I’m thinking 4wd is still suited better to my local area. Thankyou again. Sub earned.
like yeah i get that redcat is getting disliked by drift lovers but i can agree with them but if it was 2wd i wouldnt agree with them. but the redcat with on road tires is a dream so maybe its something redcat can look into great vid man
I made a custom awd rc car based off of a car that was meant for touring. I changed the tires, camber, tow, and packed the rear diff with grease (not locked). All in about $200. It drifts very well, in and outside on asphalt and is a ton of fun. The one issue i have although it might just be specific to my car is that the dogbone driveshafts are under a lot of stress when the wheels turn and break after a while. However, with awd, you dont need a lot of steering angle so reducing it helped greatly.
Very cool. What you did is basically the same as what Tamiya did with the TT-02D and many others have done following them. If you tried a RWD car next to your AWD car, you would find a whole different driving experience.
How do the tires stand up to smooth concrete in a parking lot? I'm building a DA3s to play with inside, but having the size for 1/10.... I'd have to used a smooth parking lot.
Look at that tire movement on the onboard footage! WHOA! Does it matter brushed or brushless? And thanks for the plethora of information! it means a lot. :D
Thank you - glad the video was helpful! You will find the motor and ESC are the least important items to a RWD RC drift car. That being said - the go-to setups are brushless sensored combos. It gives all the power you would need plus the control. If you are considering going with the MST RMX RTR - I would heavily consider the brushed version. Their brushless is non-sensored. It works well - but with both versions, you will eventually upgrade anyway. Might as well save some $$ up front. This is the one I am talking about: alnk.to/ei1KYlr It looks like they are out of stock at the moment, but there are some of the brushless models in stock. The other car you can look at is the Yokomo RTR: alnk.to/esWvXbu It is slightly more expensive - boo...and comes with worse electronics - also boo. But the chassis is really good! Good luck!
@RoadsideRC thank you so much for the info! That's a good suggestion to go brushed initially. I have an ARRMA Granite that is brushed (the 4WD), and it's a blast! Starting to save nickles and dimes, lol.
@RoadsideRC cool! I'm thinking of getting the LDRC 1899( the skyline $60 on Banggood) to see if I can practice drifting in a small space and then start investing in the RDS. My local hobby shop has a drift track they use for 1:10 and 1:28.
I drift yokomo yd2s Rwd on carpet track and find it more entertaining as you need to stick closer to people and properly drift. I did start out with 4wd maverick strada DC evo and whilst it was good on carparks I just found it got boring easily unless you have a few people with you but once I tried rwd I was just amazed how much better it was plus we run turbo/boost escs on carpet tracks
Thanks for the vid , definitely I would choose awd r/c drift , coz I don't have much time to go to the r/c drift arena , once a time I brought my sakura D4 rwd r/c on tennis court , and it wouldn't run ... Wkwkwkkk ... , Great vid my bro ... I'm Nuki from Indonesia ... 😁
First drift chassis I got was the hpi e10 and it was the worst mistake I made still have it sitting in a shelf with a 15 t motor in it that makes the drive shaft bounce. Fixed my mistake by buying an mst rmx 2.0 rtr and I loved it so bought the mst fxx-d for a realistic feel with motor front mounted and then got a tamiya tt01 and slapped a brushless 3300kv in it and it’s perfect. All my friend use awd drift chassis here in Calgary but with over drive and underdrive systems to help out with control. so every time a new comer asks what drift rc should I get I say it’s always based on three questions 1) what your price range? 2. Are you easy on the throttle or a heavy trigger ? For this I find if your easy rwd is the best way to go because your feathering the throttle but with an awd it’s more all out power 3. What type of surface are you running on? If you like to hit the street go awd but if you do carpet or smooth concrete or tile then go rwd! It is tough though to help out the new comers that’s why I usually just let my friends try my rwd and awd to see what they like better some people pick up my rwd and instantly set it back down some people love it
Roadside RC oh yeah we got about seven guys who run awd I have one just so I can run with them but I prefer the feel of rwd but it’s fun to slide around the awd from time to time
So my cousin got into rc drifting and he loves it so I went yesterday to his track place and at first I was having a lot of trouble trying to drift but then everyone left I started to get the hang of it and today I did way better than I did yesterday even with ppl their, now I’m looking for a rc but I’m still learning about it before I get fully into this it’s a lot of fun especially with other ppl bc then it will motivate you to try and do better
What are your thoughts on starting drifting at home with a modified rwd drag car, stadium truck, short course truck, or buggy? How much modification would it take? How much steering angle do you really need?
Honestly, I believe it would be a waste of time and $$. To really drift RWD, you really do need the almost 90* steering angle. The thought has gone through my mind before, if I am honest. I look at my Team Associated 2WD SCT and wonder what mods it would take to get enough angle...
Thanks, great video! I used to drive HPI’s back in early 2000’s. I recently got back into the hobby last year during the pandemic and was surprised to find out from local RC hobby stores that HPI has become almost obsolete. But I still went that route and purchased the HPI RS4 Sport 3 Drift Dai Yoshihara Subaru BRZ - I love it and have started a wall of customized shells to swap out (and wheel sets), lol. Like you explained in your video, AWD set up is perfect for outdoor/asphalt drifting. At some point, I’d like to invest in a RWD at some point to try indoor drifting. However, for my current AWD, is there a setting on my transmitter that I can adjust to for driving on indoor tracks?
Sorry, but no. Most indoor tracks will not even allow AWD on a track. If you just want to drive in your garage (or similar spot), then just go have fun. There really aren't any controller settings to change.
Hello from chilly Scotland. Mate - thanks for that, it was really helpful. I bought an £85 TT02D kit lockdown project. I knew it wasn't a proper drift car but until now I didn't fully understand 'why' it wasn't. So. I reckon we need a new description for the Redcat/ TTD type category - 'Slider cars' maybe? Even though I now know it ain't a proper drifter, glad I went for a TT02D slider over a more dedicated platform this time round. High revs & wheelspin isn't the same as precision gliding - but for bashing round the car park, it's alot of whistly motor fun! Plus it was fun putting the TT together & it will probably convert to an adequate touring car basher with the minimal of mods. (I hope 😃) I'll build a Proper Drifter when I find a proper smooth drift spot and got more pennies in the bank - & do it proper. The 'old school' shelled machine drifting round your garage in the vid was Properly Ace! Stay well folks! Cheers.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, I think the Redact and TT02 cars certainly have a place in the RC drift world! Many people do not think so, but I have had a LOT of fun with this car. It is just a different driving experience!
I would drive the heck out of it and have fun with it! That is what RC is all about! If you are just going to be in your backyard without a bunch of people, just enjoy it as is. Certainly do not go down the path of trying to convert it to RWD.
Helpful video. A friend pointed out to me swap some knobby tires on an awd like the tto2d and you got a rally car to run on dirt if you want to switch things up. I guess I'll find out, I have one on order for my first hobby grade car.
Yes sir - that does work! I have put touring rubber tires on this Thunder Drift and it did really well with them. I liked that the handling was still loose based on the drift setup. Same would certainly happen with rally tires. I hope you enjoy it!
Pretty much sums it up! I would like to try a MST AWD kit at some point to see how they do. I thought about trying to go into the difference between power sliding and drifting, but figure we can save that for another video. Thanks for watching.
I'm looking for maybe the red cat but in a smaller form factor like the rwd car have any ideas on that? Also want it to be durable because the place I will be driving it is a parking lot most of the time
I'll be honest - smaller scale than 1:10 & going outside on a rougher parking lot is a really bad combination. You have to think about how big those bumps will be for the size of the car. I highly suggest you stick with something 1:10.
Thank you! I really appreciate your kind words! RC drift really is fun. I never would have guessed it - but a friend handed me a controller to his RWD drift car, and I was hooked. It is even more of a blast when you can drift with other people!
@@RoadsideRC love it! I had ny nitro losi truggy out other day now the neighbors are all getting into. Especially during this time. What battery do u recommend and specs. ?my mst chassis kit was discovered today;)
@@mikeinvegas1 Battery for the MST? I run the 2S lipo shorty packs to fit the narrow battery configuration. I run an Ovonic that has been good for me. What ESC/motor do you plan on running? Pre-electronics swap, it really didn't matter what 2S battery I ran. They all worked fine. Post-swap, with boost and turbo turned on, I can feel a difference in how it is pulling energy from the battery, so a higher-grade battery would be better.
@@RoadsideRC ok Cool. I ordered from super-g the pro-pak Electronics combo. Even tho i know nothing. Lol. About drift. But want good stuff:) comes with... Fleta zxv2 motor. Racing performer esc w/turbo bst. Ko propo servo Ko propo gyro. What specs with for battery 50c or 100c 4500mah?
@@mikeinvegas1 2S for sure. Mah doesn't really matter - just determines how long you can drive. Honestly, I don't trust C ratings. Pick something from a reputable company and you will be happy.
I have both. A sakura d5mr and a tt02d. I told a buddy of mine that i drift outside since drifting indoors isn't an option for me because of space. My d5 is going to get some upgrades and a body for it. My tt02 will get some new tires that can slide better on concrete.
Whats a good drifter to get started with? I have a latrax rally i been tinkering with. Got a brushless system, lipo, steal axles, tsm, bearings all around, and taped the wheels with electric tape to slide better but I'm just not getting the control im looki.g for out of it
What if I got a flashy awd drift car? It’s all carbon and aluminum, and it’s got mad counter steer so the fronts spin way slower then rear, mad stealing angle as well, works just as good as my yd2 in my opinion.
That seems to just he a style that I don't see much of anymore. Honestly, I think they are cool! Maybe they will make a comeback. This video was created to address the questions seen on the forums and groups most often.
I have a cheap 4wd rc "drift" car as well but i want it to have a wider steering angle and i also want to know if i can make rwd. Any ideas how? The specific model is the sg1603
There are a few people who have made the SG1603 into a RWD drift car - but honestly, I believe it to be a waste of your time and $$$. You would be much better off putting that time and money towards a proper RWD chassis.
This is honest and true. I find most people will actually be happier with the thunder drift in the real world. The LHS is actually a rarity for most people and a lot of those don't have a track, and drift tracks just don't exist near a lot of people, many people don't have a 2 car garage to draw on Nd even some of those have rough concrete. A dedicated chassis will always be superior, thats why its dedicated, but there's a lot to be said fir a more universal and accessible vehicle. Parts for redcat are becoming easier and easier to find. MST, difficult state side. I agree.
Good vid. I live in the city. I have a rustler that I made just for street bashing. But I wanted something different. I scored a red cat in a trade for a old dx3e with a fd rx7 body already cut and painted and extra wheels. I’ll just be bashing at local parking lots so this works for now.
@@RoadsideRC it’s fun for what it is. Got a 2s for it today just waiting for adapters. But for street sliding it’s relaxing. The wide body rx7 looks good sideways 😎
Honestly, for the money you will spend converting one of the chassis to RWD, I would suggest just getting a RWD chassis. As an example, the newest chassis out is the Sakura D5S. The chassis kit is right under $100 and comes with wheels & tires + magnetic body mounts all included. You can swap over all of the electronics from one of your AWD chassis and the body...and be done! Much better than trying to convert one!
@@RoadsideRC yea of course, I was just saying. I did already get two decent out the box ready to go rc's. I do eventually like you said want that intro ready to go rwd.
From what I can tell...bad. The basic concept is great, but it just doesn't have the steering angle the MST does. Then, we get into basically replacing the total front suspension to improve it. I might try just for the heck of it!
Ive heard of people doing it and was very curious to see how it worked. I would do it myself but i do not own one. There may be other people that may be curious too.
I appreciate the idea! Heck - it is not like I have anything better to do while I sit around the house quarantined, right!?! ;) Thanks for the idea - I might just give it a shot!
I cambered my thunder drift and messed with the toe and a couple of other thing just to make it smother and its not bad but i still want a fancy one just to get one.
I did some of that to my Thunder drift also. The car really is fun to drive, but if you have never gone RWD, you really need to try it. It is a whole different driving experience.
I ask you why sometimes if a wheel touches rough or uneven asphalt, a wheel stops and hurts me when drifting. Yes, just lock the rear differential, it will happen to me like the red RC in the video. I want the asphalt to never stop a rims. what do you think ? what do you think? I can lock the 2 differentials (diff)

Thanks for this video looking into getting into rc drifting. This helped me out a ton clarified what I wanted to do!
Great! It makes me.happy to hear it was useful!
Picked up a MST RMX 2.0 R35 Skyline about a week ago after countless hours of research. Main factor in the purchase was my small apartment, which the MST navigates with ease. Beautiful car and well worth the investment. Nice vid on the comparison between awd and rwd.
Thanks! Great choice!
thanks for being so honest about what the scene thinks about 50/50! youre saying all the right things :)
Great - thank you! I wanted this to be genuinely helpful to new folks.
Great video man ... the hotrod looks coool
Thank you. I like the open wheel look also!
And i loved the video, i dont have much flat surface near home so you summed it up for me, now is not the right time to buy a Rwd even tho it would be fun, thanks man appreciate it
Glad it was helpful!!
My buddy and each have both of these models and I have to say, you pretty well hit the nail on the head. 👍 love your videos keep up the good work
Thanks 👍
Glad to hear that feedback!
I wanted your channel to have videos based on the whiskey throttle theme. 🤪
thanks for this video. exactly the questions i was asking my small local rc community
Awesome! Glad it was helpful.
Which version fits your use better?
Thank you for this video. It showed me a lot of things I did not know about the difference between both setups.
Glad it was helpful! Do you have any other questions?
Great video. Really helpful for me to understand where and why the differences are between AWD and RWD dedicated chassis.
Glad it was helpful!
You make it look so easy. I have a lot of tuning to do.
I'm happy to answer questions along the way. I'm not an expert, but happy to help!
i really enjoy your drift content videos. keep it up bud 👍
We have a new track opening soon! Expect to see many more!
Great advice ! I like this non biased advice, appreciated !
You are welcome!
Any more questions?
Sir, thank you...nicely done and informative...I am in exactly the position you described...and much like other forms or RC , where you drive does often play a huge role in which vehicle to choose.
Great! Glad to hear this was helpful!
If you had to back your Chevy out of your two-car garage to drift RC you are doing life right, too.
Ive been looking for this comparisson long ago, now i found it, thx.
Glad I could help!
Which camp do you fall in - AWD or RWD?
@@RoadsideRC RWD, cause its like a real drift car, not just slide like AWD. 😁
This video was a huge help for informing my decision and what to buy and answered lot of questions I had about the hobby
GREAT! I am very glad to hear that.
Any other questions you need help with?
@@RoadsideRC no question for now I'm going to continue researching before I buy a take a look at options in my area for groups that I go to learn more about the hobby in person. But I'll have to wait quarantine stuff to end before that so it might be a while
That is a great idea. Seeing what local folks run and getting the same or similar is very helpful when you dive into tuning for the first time.

I agree! Thanks for the comment!
Thank you! This was super helpful. I don’t have a track near me or a suitable garage. So I’m going to be looking at parking lots and the AWD does look a little more fun for that purpose.
Glad I could help!!! Hope you have fun!
this is a really good topic, nice video!
Thank you! I appreciate it a lot.
Could have used some of your filming and editing to make it better!
Awesome man some really great info you got here, Great video!
Thank you! I hope folks find it useful.
Great job on this!👊🏼💯👍🏻
Great - thank you for that!

Thanks for this informative upload on budget drifting. As you've seen we do have the Redcat Thunder Drift on 2s lipo. It's a beast in the streets.
Great! Glad it was helpful for you. Enjoy!
I'm thinking a tennis court for nice smooth surface for larger drift courses.
That could work!
Just found this. Have you ever tried to lock the rear differential on the redcat? I would think that would add to the control, and smoothness of the drift. Great video. Thank you!
Yes! I actually have a separate video on the tuning I have done on the Thunder Drift. Locking the rear was certainly one of the things!
Thanks for showing the difference. Really helps

A few suggestions from me:
Go AWD, skip RWD.
Hey really cool vid I been looking at drifting and don’t really know what to get I just wanna drift around my house and garage

Mate what an awesome video that will help so many people 👍
It helped me two I'm by no means new to rc I have a lot lol I'm not saying how many incase the wife sees 😂
Drift wise though I'm slowly getting into it, but I did going gor the tt01e I didn't buy it as a drifter as such I bought it because I wanted the euro racing truck, but I also made it into a fun skyline r34 drifter..
Adventure Time RC yeah racing makes a conversion kit for the tamiya just get on rc mart
That really helped me man, I’m from England and at my house we don’t have a garage so I have to drive on the asphalt. It’s also really helpful because I don’t even have a drift car and I didn’t want to spend £200 + on a car love the vid 👍👍👍😀😀😀💯💯💯💯

Hello Roadside RC!
it's amazing! Thanks for the very nice video! I saw it with great interest! Great! Thanks for the inspiration! Have a nice day!
Thank you!
Perfection! You may be the world leading drifter!
I am 100% not the world's leading drifter - but I do enjoy it a lot.
Thanks!
You could take all the electronics from your TT-02D and be up and running!
try converting that to rwd
that would make a great project

@@LegendaryRc That's a great Idea
Thanks. I never knew the difference and only had the experience of putting drift tires on a TC4 on my street and a local basketball court
Glad this was helpful!
If you are interested in diving into RWD drift, I'm happy to help with questions.
Sub earned.
Great video mate. I'm hoping that you might share where I might find the custom body on the mst
Hi there! It is this body: alnk.to/bitYTXU
@RoadsideRC thanks mate, I have been looking for something like this for a while now. Have a one.
like yeah i get that redcat is getting disliked by drift lovers but i can agree with them but if it was 2wd i wouldnt agree with them. but the redcat with on road tires is a dream so maybe its something redcat can look into great vid man
Redcat does have this same vehicle with rubber tires. Sold with a NASCAR body. It is fun!
Really hard to tell as "smooth" is different for everyone.
Keep trying different tire specs. You will find some that last and provide good traction.
Great video showing the difference 👍.
Thank you! I hope folks find it useful!
This is the one I am talking about: alnk.to/ei1KYlr
It looks like they are out of stock at the moment, but there are some of the brushless models in stock.
The other car you can look at is the Yokomo RTR: alnk.to/esWvXbu
It is slightly more expensive - boo...and comes with worse electronics - also boo. But the chassis is really good!
Good luck!
@RoadsideRC thank you so much for the info! That's a good suggestion to go brushed initially. I have an ARRMA Granite that is brushed (the 4WD), and it's a blast! Starting to save nickles and dimes, lol.
@RoadsideRC I was watching your video about the Redcat RDS, MST, and Yokomo. The RDS looks like a great little box stock drifter.
@@freemansfocus It really is!
Exactly! Your experience mirror's mine a lot. The RWD drift, in the right location, is a blast!

It is tough though to help out the new comers that’s why I usually just let my friends try my rwd and awd to see what they like better some people pick up my rwd and instantly set it back down some people love it
Exactly!
I agree 100% with your thinking.
Glad to hear there are people who still run AWD also.
Roadside RC oh yeah we got about seven guys who run awd I have one just so I can run with them but I prefer the feel of rwd but it’s fun to slide around the awd from time to time
@@ericarnason7610 That is awesome. I would like to get a properly setup AWD at some point.
Yes! I couldn't agree more!
Drifting is fun, but when you start doing it as a group - it is just better!
Nice video :) I choose the RDW if I have the money 💰 👍🎉
Nice 👍
They are not cheap, unfortunately.
(I hope 😃)
I'll build a Proper Drifter when I find a proper smooth drift spot and got more pennies in the bank - & do it proper.
So...someone gave me an HPI Sprint 2 Flux. I have a small backyard with pavers (concrete). Do I modify my HPI, or save up for a Yokomo YD-2/MST RMX?
4wd is not drifting! it's power sliding... Great video. very informative 👍🏻
Pretty much sums it up!
I would like to try a MST AWD kit at some point to see how they do.
I thought about trying to go into the difference between power sliding and drifting, but figure we can save that for another video.
Thanks for watching.
Back in the day everybody was drifting awd!
Loving my new hsp 1 10 drifter so good on my front road around the medium strip n roundabout but 2 weeks killed the tires waiting on a new set
Drifting does kill tires - that is for sure!
@@RoadsideRC isn't the red cat bigger then 1:10
@@glassgville All Redcat drift cars are true 1:10.
How RWD will perform at tennis or basketball site ?
It can be fun - you may need to experiment with different tires to get the right one for the surface.
Technically couldn’t you remove the center shaft which would disable the 4x4 action?
Yes - but that is not the key difference. The whole suspension geometry is different.

I have both. A sakura d5mr and a tt02d. I told a buddy of mine that i drift outside since drifting indoors isn't an option for me because of space. My d5 is going to get some upgrades and a body for it. My tt02 will get some new tires that can slide better on concrete.
Great! Glad you enjoy both of them!
So i have a HSP that is basically same as the redcat, could i just put touring tires on it and call it a touring car?
YES!!!
In fact, I have done that with my Thunder Drift - it was super fun.
Roadside RC awesome, i have a Flying Fish 1

what body is the hotrod sedan it lloks like a legends body
It is from McAllister Racing! Has been a really fun body!

I agree.
Thanks for the feedback!
I think it is a shame that some folks really hate on the AWD cars - they can be fun! It is just a different fun.
For me the choice was Aarma Infraction, or Yokomo yd2. I went the latter.
Two very different vehicles there for sure!
Good vid. I live in the city. I have a rustler that I made just for street bashing. But I wanted something different. I scored a red cat in a trade for a old dx3e with a fd rx7 body already cut and painted and extra wheels. I’ll just be bashing at local parking lots so this works for now.
Great! I bet you will have a blast! I have really enjoyed my Thunder Drift.
@@RoadsideRC it’s fun for what it is. Got a 2s for it today just waiting for adapters. But for street sliding it’s relaxing. The wide body rx7 looks good sideways 😎
Just bought a couple 4wd ready to go chassis. To have the real experience I do want to invest in getting one rwd. You have me some good tips.
Thanks
Honestly, for the money you will spend converting one of the chassis to RWD, I would suggest just getting a RWD chassis.
As an example, the newest chassis out is the Sakura D5S. The chassis kit is right under $100 and comes with wheels & tires + magnetic body mounts all included. You can swap over all of the electronics from one of your AWD chassis and the body...and be done!
Much better than trying to convert one!
@@RoadsideRC yea of course, I was just saying. I did already get two decent out the box ready to go rc's. I do eventually like you said want that intro ready to go rwd.
Can you please make a throttle calibration for your MST RTR.
Thanks. I will check out how to do that.
wher did u get that rat rod body?
It is from McAllister racing.
I would like to see how the redcat performeds if you took out the front diff to make itrwd only.
Heck - it is not like I have anything better to do while I sit around the house quarantined, right!?! ;)
Thanks for the idea - I might just give it a shot!
hey, what car is that? the one outside
I believe you are talking about my 1971 Chevelle.
@@RoadsideRC yess thank you
I cambered my thunder drift and messed with the toe and a couple of other thing just to make it smother and its not bad but i still want a fancy one just to get one.
Yes - frequently folks will lock the differentials on an AWD drift car in your situation.
@@RoadsideRC awesome!!! Thanks for your quick response, and help me with my question, I follow you on UA-cam I love your videos, you do excellent reviews, tests and excellent work
