“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence? It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind.Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy. One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history. The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life." 8You and 7 others 5 Comments 1 Share Love Comment Share

I’ve been listening to other critics and yours was the best. I loved that you didn’t stop and critiqued but let the song play out. Yes, I can’t stop listening to them. I shied away because I thought it was going to be Metal!
Thank you for your beautiful comment Rose. Much appreciated. Thank you for watching. UA-cam penalise or at Time's block the video if I don't stop the video. That's why a lot of my other videos and everyone else have to stops in the video.
Oh, yes! Thank you for not interrupting while he was in this song! This music is so stellar, I get chills every time I hear this. You really should watch and listen to the official music video. It is such a masterpiece!
I have been a huge Disturbed fan for years before they released this cover. We all knew what a great vocalist David was, but I was floored, as were you, when I heard this beautifully sung cover. To get a feel for why I was floored listen to the explicit lyric video of Down With the Sickness by Disturbed. You will not believe it is the same singer and band.
Yes, this homage to Sound of Silence is nothing like the usual Disturbed sound. They knocked it out if the park! They nailed me 3 times with this song. I pre- ordered the CD and it blew me away. Then again with the beautiful music video. 3rd time live on Conan.
I went into this song already ready to write it off. Disturbed was not allowed in my house…ask my sister who lost her CD player for a month after getting caught with it. 😂 I never much appreciated that style of music. At all. Was I ever proved SO wrong. The sound of Silence is a favorite of my fathers and he considers it absolute perfection. I didn’t realize how much that song could be enhanced by such a different approach but with so much respect for the original. Absolutely loved this.
Stunning! Thank you for reacting to this song. Since you said you haven't heard The Sound of Silence before, I highly recommend watching the original by Simon and Garfunkel. This will further illustrate the brilliance of David Draiman's rendition of this classic.
Not many listen to this song all the way through before giving their reactions- this was a treat. I've been binging on reaction videos of this band's performance of this and if you want another treat, watch the official video: the images used are phenomenal.
More than just his voice, the craftsmanship is great. There's a lot of restraint. The way he says "songs", both here and in the studio version, is one of the purest, beautiful notes I've ever heard.
Thank you for not pausing the video to make comments. You’re the only reactor that I’ve watched who listened in it’s entirety. David Draiman is my new favorite vocalist! I’ve listened to this song dozens of times and get goosebumps each time!
I grew up listening to and loving the S&G version, but I saw this the night it was broadcast and I got goosebumps and was almost in tears by the end of the performance. I've made it a personal mission to tell as many people as I can about this version of The Sound of Silence .This performance was nominated for a Grammy and I don't know how the lost.
Watching you at the start showing your goosebumps... I said to myself "Oh, he has no idea what's coming!" It's such a visceral performance that the first time you hear it you have no way to prepare. All done live while sick. Phenomenal. Seeing you get so emotionally latched into it so quickly was wonderful.
I can’t get enough of this song! Then I watched so many reactions focusing on the reactors face and you know the moment in which they got soul touched just like me. You would have to be soul dead not to feel it!
I can’t believe that you hadn’t heard the original by Simon and Garfunkel. Maybe I’m just old. LOL. I love this version of the song. They were such a high pitched singer and he takes it to the dungeon. Hauntingly beautiful!!!
David had a terrible cold that night but he insisted on going through with it. If you haven't seen the official video, treat yourself to gorgeous black and white images that go perfectly with the lyrics.
Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like a rollercoaster ride, slowly brings you to the top, then crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction, & I still get goosebumps, & I have heard this over at least a hundred times!!!
i could listen to him singing this song over and over. and thanks bout time someone listened to a song all the way through and didnt pause. so we get to enjoy it all. thanks you
I see others have mentioned that he was sick that night. You have to watch the original video version.... he's so powerful. And with the vision of the video it is even more elevated
I agree. Everyone needs to see the official video to get the full impact of not only David's vocals but the power of the images in the video. Love this version just as much as I loved the original by S&G back in the 60's. :)
This is without a doubt one if not the best live performance I've ever seen. It literally blows me away every time I watch and listen to it. The only other performance I've seen on this level was the live version of Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers singing "Unchained Melody". It is worth searching, and he has a pink suit on if that helps your search.

what shocks most people is that he was fairly ill when he did this live ... he had a flu ! ... he still managed to pull it off .. the film clip "non live" version is stil my fav .... he reaches in so much deeper and uses his sublime control and articulation of voice to an extreme .... hes very special in the voice and control that he has and will be one of the names forever more along side only a hand full of others with such tallents
Internet myth. That was Trent Reznor to Johnny Cash after his version or 'Hurt'. Paul Simon said it was amazing and shared it on his own social media - nothing more, nothing less.
@@inquisitorMence You are surely correct in what you said, however, everyone who has ever listened to this version entirely captured the meaning and emotion of the time and made it ever more relevant. The fact that Paul Simon didn’t say it was far superior to their version shows his arrogance and ego. Imo of course... and seemingly everyone else on the planet 😆
@@insearchofthetruth2843 Well, I know a few people that either vastly prefer the original or simply don't like this version at all, so I think you're letting your personal perspective get the better of you.
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
I am old enough to have grown up with the original. Sound of Silence. It was a nice song but what I would now describe as pretty vanilla, not emotional. This version is powerful and brings me to tears every time I listen to it!
There is a haunting beauty to davids voice when he wants there to be. This was so different from what he and his band usually do that he didn't even know if his band mates would be on board. Thankfully they were or we would have been deprived of this beautiful cover of an already deeply meaningful song.

I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."

Thank you for the information on the thesis. Thank you for watching. Stay safe
They say when he sang this live on Conan that he was very sick. Not feeling well at all. Said he was not pleased with his performance. I think the guy is godly. Bravo
He received a Grammy nomination for that performance.
I get goosebumps and Tears in my eyes EVERY TIME I hear this but when he did this SAME thing But GOES RIGHT TO MY HEART AND SOUL! GOD BLESSED THIS GUY FOR SURE! WOW! WOW! WOW!!! AMEN
Thank you for not iinterupting the song every couple minutes. It's a beautiful song. I could listen to him sing forever. Awesome, powerful and beautiful voice. Thanks again.
Thank you and greetings from Melbourne Australia!
I hope things are well with you. Take care.
the simon and garfunkel version was a warning to society and david said he sang this cover from a perspective of anger at society for failing to heed the warning from the original song... paul simon said he cried when he heard them sing this on conan then called david to tell him thanks and how much it moved him
I’ve been listening to other critics and yours was the best.
David is a classically trained vocalist. He has a vocal coach too.
Love, Love to see peoples reactions to David 😁
Thank you for watching. Much love. Stay safe.
Brings me to tears every time I hear it!
❤
Oh, yes! Thank you for not interrupting while he was in this song! This music is so stellar, I get chills every time I hear this. You really should watch and listen to the official music video. It is such a masterpiece!
Thank you! And thank you for watching. Yes it is a masterpiece. Stay safe
@@deed5811 the version of the duet with Myles Kennedy is great as well
I went into this song already ready to write it off.
I fell in love with him before I even SAW HIM!!! Incredible range with clarity and easy elevation - he is truly a MASTER of control!!!!!
Stunning! Thank you for reacting to this song. Since you said you haven't heard The Sound of Silence before, I highly recommend watching the original by Simon and Garfunkel. This will further illustrate the brilliance of David Draiman's rendition of this classic.
And Her was very sick when He sang this beautiful song on that TV show that night plus a fever!!👍🇺🇸🙏✨
Not many listen to this song all the way through before giving their reactions- this was a treat. I've been binging on reaction videos of this band's performance of this and if you want another treat, watch the official video: the images used are phenomenal.
Thank you! And thank you for watching. Stay safe.
More than just his voice, the craftsmanship is great. There's a lot of restraint. The way he says "songs", both here and in the studio version, is one of the purest, beautiful notes I've ever heard.
Absolutely agreed.
Thank you for not pausing the video to make comments. You’re the only reactor that I’ve watched who listened in it’s entirety. David Draiman is my new favorite vocalist! I’ve listened to this song dozens of times and get goosebumps each time!
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard
He had the flu and a 102 F fever, he was sitting because he wasn’t sure he could stand through the entire perf!
SUBSCRIBED!! THANK YOU for not interrupting the performance for analytics, and respecting the performer. THAT is a true reaction video.
Thank you. And thank you for watching
I know this is unbelievable,
But the official video , is even better!! Aided by wonderful graphics. Superb, on superb!
What a feeling filling for the ✨SOUL!💓
I grew up listening to and loving the S&G version, but I saw this the night it was broadcast and I got goosebumps and was almost in tears by the end of the performance. I've made it a personal mission to tell as many people as I can about this version of The Sound of Silence .This performance was nominated for a Grammy and I don't know how the lost.
Quietly Powerful
When I heard this song at the first time I was full with tears. Just because it was so brilliant and powerful ❤️
I remember my 3rd or so listen, I had tears streaming down my face because of how beautiful the song and vocals were.
Course I've heard the original version. I hadn't heard the disturbed version. Much love and greetings from Melbourne Australia
I think everyone who hears this reacts the same way! So incredibly powerful.
David had a terrible cold that night but he insisted on going through with it.
If you haven't seen the official video, treat yourself to gorgeous black and white images that go perfectly with the lyrics.
Normal person: “Wow, David has such a beautiful voice.” *googles David Draiman* OOOOO WA AH AH AH
Love love love this song (hair standing on end all the time while listening) and love to see peoples' reaction to it!
I am new but thank you so much.
And the Pentatonix cover expressed hope that it isn't too late and will be averted.
Amazing. Just Amazing 👍🏼❤️
Paul Simon gave his blessing to this version. Paul and Art's version was a warning, Disturbed's version is the anger of a warning not heeded.
david the best,disturbed amazing,so beautifull
i could listen to him singing this song over and over. and thanks bout time someone listened to a song all the way through and didnt pause. so we get to enjoy it all. thanks you
Thank you for watching. Stay safe
Best Reaction 5 🌟
Thank you. I really appreciate it.
Glad I was alive to witness this, I thought nobody could touch my favourite song, I stand corrected 🙏
Thank you for watching. Stay safe.
One of my favorite reaction videos, thanks for not stopping. If you haven't already, please do Devin Townsend "Deadhead " Live at Royal Albert Hall
I have already done a Devon video. Check it out in my playlist. Thank you for watching. Stay safe
@@voxsingingacademy Thanks. I did not see this particular song, which is more requested than the one you did. Please consider it. I will send you a link

He's an amazing artist and a good person as well.its amazing he did this with a 103 temp and a polyp or abscess on a vocal chord
I'm 66 years old and grew up listening to mostly rock and absolutely love David Draiman's version of this song I had son that loved Disturbed I would listen with him I wish he could have lived to hear David sing this he would have loved it I lost him 9 years ago
My condolences. It sounds like you have great memories of your son. Hold those close to your heart. Massive love
Absolutely incredible, soul intense, so moving just superberb... gripping... LOVE IT!!!!
what shocks most people is that he was fairly ill when he did this live ... he had a flu ! ... he still managed to pull it off .. the film clip "non live" version is stil my fav .... he reaches in so much deeper and uses his sublime control and articulation of voice to an extreme .... hes very special in the voice and control that he has and will be one of the names forever more along side only a hand full of others with such tallents
Paul Simon said that this song belongs to them now. He added it to his playlist.
Internet myth. That was Trent Reznor to Johnny Cash after his version or 'Hurt'.
Paul Simon said it was amazing and shared it on his own social media - nothing more, nothing less.
No Simon did not. Huge distortion of facts, but you're not the only one who is mistaken.
@@inquisitorMence
Thank you.
@@inquisitorMence
You are surely correct in what you said, however, everyone who has ever listened to this version entirely captured the meaning and emotion of the time and made it ever more relevant.
Greetings from Melbourne Australia
I love watching minds being blown!!
WOW.... the first word people say at the end of this song when they hear it for the first time... I only like and subscribe if I hear it and I have subbed to almost 99% of them lol... you were close (Woah) but close enough so I subbed... Great honest reaction. Great cover with a voice on loan from God... Disturbed has matured into what you will find is an exceptional group... enjoy as I enjoyed ...
Thank you. And greetings from Melbourne Australia🙇🏻♂️
My grandmother passed at 95 but she loved disturbed.. nana miss & love you.. I played this at her funeral
True rocker
Respect!
Your’s is so far my favorite reaction & u gave respect, letting it play straight thru!!!
The singing is so amazing, I wouldn’t b able to refrain stopping to comment… so thank u for that!!! His voice is like butter to my ears ( no pun ) & equally the lyrics, which I barely never noticed, takes you on a journey!!!! Kudos to Paul Simon 4 these amazing words… I cried the first time I heard this song. Blessing from the 🇺🇸 US
Thank you! And thank you for watching. Stay safe.
This Fellow is like NO OTHER! There is no criticism! How dear those who say anything other! AWESOME JUST AWESOME! Simon and Garfunkel should be sooooo proud of their “remake” of such a HREAT SONG I GREW UP TO
It's originally by Simon and Garfunkel from the 60's
WOW1. That was amazing !
Thank you! And thank you for watching
He was very ill for this performance. He had a high fever, Amazing! I loved you let it play and then commented.
Thank you! And thank you for watching.
Thx❤
Probably the absolute best version of this song ever done, freaking awesome job
yeah, so far i have listened to many reaction videos, FIRST one where they did NOT pause it multiple times...ty for that
Bro love your reaction.. absolutely blown away that's the best life performance I have ever seen that dude ain't no joke good Lord absolutely beautiful where would we be without music tell me right now where would we be
Thank you. And thank you for watching.
