It is not just the voice, it is his absolute mastery of it. He is a trained Jewish cantor. Despite having a hugely high temperature and a heavy cold during this performance, he is still in complete control...
As a Disturbed fan from their early years, I was absolutely floored by this song and this live performance on Conan. Not their typical genre. We all knew what a great vocalist David Draiman is, but at this level, I was shocked. Watch Down with the Sickness and you'll understand.
If you feel music deep inside, you can't help but appreciate the build-up and the emotion David Draiman puts you through. Honestly, every time I hear it, I am moved to tears. I read a comment on another reaction video...God turned to David and asked, "do you want the voice of an angel or devil". And David replied "yes".
My first time hearing it, I felt that his voice enveloped me in its warmth and depth. I became part of the story he was weaving down to my soul. That voice took me through an emotional roller coaster. Amazing!
"You never know what's just around the corner". Truer words were never spoken. UA-cam is how, as a lover of classical music, I discovered Nightwish, Jinjer, Heilung, Eivor, Diana Ankudinova, and other wonderful artists who are simply ignored by US radio.
"This is something else". The main reason most people got emotional about this live cover version of this song is just because that vocal performance was the very definition of PERFECTION. Everytime we understand that something is completely perfect, and we have the chance of witness perfection particularly when we are talking about any kind of art... we got emotional.
David Draiman is an incredible vocal artist, his voice is like coffee, it's rich, it's dark, it's robust. easily why Disturbed is one of the most popular Metal Bands today, because he knows how to reel them in, ab-SOUL-utely one of the greatest covers to-date.
I have watched over 50 of these reaction videos to David Draimen and you are the only one that mentions the flip. This is truly the best live performance of any artist I have seen. Truly a spiritual journey.
Even being sick at the time, he slayed it, Brilliant performer, amazing band...Its a haunting and angelic sound, but when that man wants power, he gives it. Amazing...Thank you, Peace
This interpretation kind of makes the song feel like a rhapsody because it takes you through a few different moods: the dark calmness at the beginning, the intense build up, the rage and finally calmness again.
The song starts off so beautifully melancholic and builds to something very powerful. To me, the words convey both desperation for change and the frustration of not being heard. I've always like the original, but this version is absolutely my favorite.
When it comes to this performance, it isn’t just listening to a song, it’s about taking you on a journey and giving you a truly remarkable experience. Every tone he is capable of and all the emotions he properly conveys, introduces you to this old song in a new way. The original was great lyrics and great vocals, but this performance makes you feel the lyrics, the message behind it, and the emotions that are hidden behind the original song. He forces you to listen to what it truly means.
I love your face when we get further into the song - it's a joy to watch you have the same experience I did the first time I heard it. I mean, not exactly the same - I was driving to work when it came on and ended up bawling like a baby by the time I got to my job! But what's nice about watching a professional react is you can explain why this performance is so powerful. I can only feel it and hold on for the ride!
Hello, new subscriber here, loved that you mentioned the vocal flip, I have watched at least 100 reactions to this beautiful rendition, and you are the first to do so. I am 63 years old now, and still own the original Simon and Garfunkel hit on vinyl! I am a true convert to Disturbed’s reimagining of an already timeless classic!

I thought David was going to cry when he had that sort of crack in his voice. He was fighting back the urge and I heard it the very first time I listened. It was so emotional with that quick moment. The people were afraid to say anything. They held on tight to silence.
Nat, I love your reactions cause everything´s in your head! Hahaha. We can notice how much you have in your head and how much excitement you feel in your heart. Not always expressed in words but in your gestures. And of course, your expertise
The man is out of this world live . They were in Houston a few years back and it was a family affair. 3 generations mid 60's, early and mid 30's and 6 teenagers. We had a blast. 😊
Disturbed was one of the first big concerts I ever saw, waaaaay back when they toured for their first album. Even then, as a band that was just breaking into the "big time" tours, they were incredibly tight live.
David Draiman is all I need. I lost my husband in a car wreck 10 years ago. I have not dated or had any kind of relationship since. There have been times when I thought maybe I should seek someone out.... But all I need his David when he says..."In the naked light I saw"..... that's it, that totally does it for me. :-)
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance Nat Elliot-Ross. Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", "Violence Fetish" and "Enough" by Disturbed too. They are a bit "heavier"....lol......
I'm 64....just heard this cover for the 1st time months ago. It is my go to bed lullaby from David Draiman. I have great respect for what he and the band stand for as artists, with the music they choose to write. The bridges they are building and crossing are Blessings to all that take the time to truly listen. Yes I am a complete Fan...
His voice draws you in. Disturbed is the only Heavy Metal band I like enough to buy their albums, that raspy tone is why. And I’ve listened to this version as well as the original video more times than I can count and I get goosebumps every time. EVERY. TIME.
I still don't know what Draiman was auditioning for that day. I don't. But he really dragged out the whole toolbox for this performance, and it was absolutely a masterclass.

Glad to see you react to this one, Nat. It still brings tears to my eyes & gives me goosebumps, and I lost count months ago, as to how many times I've listened to it. I love S & G's original version. Also think Penatonix version is killer. But, for me, this is the 'perfect' rendition of the song. And David's voice.. well, what's there to say about it aside from he is great..?
I’m a BIG fan of these guys. He’s my future ex husband. 😂 He’s hardcore...performed while sick and everything. Seriously talented and he can really get his growl on in the metal they do. 🔥You would LOVE the official video for this one. It’s dark and emotional. Quite moving.
I thought the video rendition was astonishing. I grew up with the Simon and Garfunkel versions. Theirs was sort of mournfully wistful, sad. But this version is more in line with the message of the song, IMO.
Eiderdown piercing souls. Effortless presentation, his voice never strains, it just billows from a core of emotion. Once in a great while we get to see/hear a voice that haunts us in its honesty. It is like he is pulling chains off his heart. Delicious!
Thanks for sharing of yourself with us. That was real and beautiful in itself. It was fun to watch you wrestle with David's southern twang on his "you". I was also gratified to see you appreciate his Heavy Metal background for his grit. Thank you.
Awesome reaction NES! You're correct. It's all about the story telling and David does it so incredibly well and this song illustrates that best! Thank you for a wonderful assessment of this already-classic song!
Dude I love you! I've watched countless reaction videos to this song, and yours is by far the best! Most interestingly produced video I've seen in some time. Thank you for 13 minutes of pure joy!
I sent the link to my almost 81 year old father about 6 weeks ago, since he was a big fan of the original, and also a singer himself, and his youngest brother was a folk musician and singer his entire life until he was forced to retire due to severe health problems a few years ago. Dad was blown away, as I knew he would be, and appreciated it for all the right reasons, and didn't let David's appearance or preconceived notions get in the way. We really don't give our parents enough credit for knowing and understanding at least as much as we know and understand- which is silly, since they raised us to be the kind of people we are!
As you mentioned, All the layers in 1 voice! 5 verses in the poem, 5 stanzas in the song & 5 voices from the singer! I've heard it for several years now but can't get enough! It starts out like, the Sun is up, wake up Sonny, to EVERYONE OUT, THE HOUSE IS ABLAZE, come on kitty.
His voice is other worldly. Plain and simple. What amazes me is he was in mid to late 40’s when he did this. He’s been singing metal for years! That he hasn’t trashed his voice is a testament to his father for the classical training David received. It’s saved his vocal chords! I thoroughly enjoy your reactions! Your appreciation and enthusiasm is contagious and more importantly, authentic. I dig you and your channel. 👍
This song is something you experience, not something you hear. It, at least in this version, is as beautifully theatrical as “Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera. It is inspiring, astounding and thought provoking.
Absolutely love David Draiman and Disturbed...im sure you're aware David was trained to be a cantor...which is no easy feat!! Saw them with 3 days Grace a little over 2 yrs ago...just AMAZING live!! Fun fact...discovered Dimash while typing in Disturbed in UA-cam...huge metalhead other than Dimash. David is my 2nd favorite vocalist!!❤❤❤❤
I just found this song in early July 2023. Your reaction is so in the moment and I understood what you were saying and I experienced many similar feelings. I just can't seem to play this song enough with the addition of the Official Video. I have watched these probably 100 times and I am still carried away as the song builds to the amazing end. I am 78 and I knew the original. I have watched a number of others using Disturbed's music and even those are pointing back to Disturbed. There is a man who plays an harmonica ("Harpoli") with his video scenes and as I am listening to his harmonica, I can hear David singing the words and it makes me appreciate it even more and more. Great reaction and great cover, Disturbed.
Such an in-depth and honest reaction and I love it, I highly recommend checking out some other Disturbed songs to get a good feel for his full vocal range. I’ve been a disturbed fan for over a decade now and his voice never ceases to give me chills😄
Your reaction just may be my favorite! I think it's because for the first time I feel relatable to Mr. David Draimen. He is of a particular genre receiving accolades for skills he's always had but never acknowledged. I am a published writer with skills ignored because I am unknown. Yet, when those of you who FINALLY come across my writing, you'll be asking yourself, "Why haven't I discovered this sooner?!"
This was Years ago I realize, but I love your knowledge . I don’t know the specifics of voice control & terms like “flip”. You are the only one to remark on the flip at “the” sound of silence. Love it!
Super great reaction! I really appreciate your insights into this song/video... Incredible performance by Disturbed.... Fearless, powerful, and entertaining!
Yes! He did that while being very sick! This live performance and Kelly Clarkson's live performance of Piece by piece at the American idol farewell season gives me goosebumps every time 👌
David Dreiman is the best singer. Period. And it's not just his voice, it's he's passion. You can really see that he means every word he sing's. And that goes for all the songs by Disturbed.
I first heard David in the movie Queen of the Damned. So I looked for other songs by him. He is so great. I'm 58 years old and I love to listen to his band, just because of his voice.
I really enjoy your reactions, you are so into what you are doing. It's great to see someone be so honest and real about how a song makes them feel. Try Disturb's cover of Land of Confusion.
I'd like to see your reaction to Johnny Cash's cover song "Hurt". The official video was done so well. The song was written by Nine Inch Nails, but Johnny claimed it his.
This man has been & lived through hell & back. I'm quite sure (especially in this song) a lot of that comes out in his voice. He's a trained vocalist (obviously) & most of Disturbeds music is the growling & screaming ... I love the band & when I heard they were doing a cover of this song I knew it would be incredible. When you've lived through certain things & can push through it all & come out on top? This is what you get ... one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. Oh ... it's been said in this version on Cohnan O'Brian he was very sick with a cold? I suggest you watch & listen to the video of this, I sob toward the end ... Paul Simon (after hearing this version) said he wrote this song for David & only David. I think because he really understands what the song is about? The true sadness of our world now & how we don't communicate with one another anymore, how there's so much violence, crime hatred in the world now? Paul Simon couldn't of known how the world would be when he wrote this in 1963? I think? But maybe he did? Music is the universal language, & we all need to shut up & listen ... it's like a book is being read to you? Peace be with you always
He is pushing his tongue toward the back of his mouth to get that yrrrr grrr sound. David has chosen to use his instrument in heavy metal. So, this was a crazy beautiful song by the band. I feel this shows the true diversity of not just Favids vocal ability, but, of the band as a whole. It was even given the Paul Simon seal of approval.
he traveled throughout the United States and Israel to be a cantor for the first few decades of his life, like his father and his world-famous grandfather. The song is a cover of the 1964 anti-war (Vietnam) song by Simon and Garfield. A member of Disturbed suggested they do a stripped-down version. Paul Simon saw this performance and contacted David Draiman and told him he was putting this link on his own website.

I’m into the same decade. I love it too
“That tone is delicious...”...no truer words said!
He was actually sick during this performance. And it was beautifully done.
Oh yes I could never hear it too much. I agree with you 100%
Your reaction just may be my favorite!
I’ve watched your reaction many times and love it! You definitely appreciate his talent!
This was Years ago I realize, but I love your knowledge . I don’t know the specifics of voice control & terms like “flip”. You are the only one to remark on the flip at “the” sound of silence. Love it!
You’re the only reviewer that caught the vocal flip he did in the third verse and I’ve watched tens of reaction videos
When I first heard it I thought it was very intentional to “disturb” the lyric disturbed.
Thank you greatly for sharing this experience with me! Much love! 🥰
Super great reaction! I really appreciate your insights into this song/video... Incredible performance by Disturbed.... Fearless, powerful, and entertaining!
Yes! He did that while being very sick! This live performance and Kelly Clarkson's live performance of Piece by piece at the American idol farewell season gives me goosebumps every time 👌
Love your take on this song. You articulated the power & quality of David’s voice so well
David Dreiman is the best singer.
I love the music video cause of the guitar coming in towards the end, adds a ton on top of his amazing voice.
I would love to see your reaction to the music video they did.
I'd like to see your reaction to Johnny Cash's cover song "Hurt". The official video was done so well. The song was written by Nine Inch Nails, but Johnny claimed it his.
You are RIGHT. He is a story teller. Listen to his voice! It's classically trained, yet grit, rock edge that is SO relatable NOW!
The original song is a warning, disturbed cover is a cry because we didn't noticed the warning.
Hey! You truly get his his emotions and this is the best reaction video. Fantastic.
Only reactor so far who catched the amazing flipping note in minute; 5.24 Well done, Sir!
Dude, you set the record for the most interruptions. lol
So very annoying! Especially where he stops.
You really will have to watch the Offical video to this it’s absolutely amazing, great reaction 😊
Amen. It should be required to watch first. Unbelievable!
he traveled throughout the United States and Israel to be a cantor for the first few decades of his life, like his father and his world-famous grandfather. The song is a cover of the 1964 anti-war (Vietnam) song by Simon and Garfield. A member of Disturbed suggested they do a stripped-down version. Paul Simon saw this performance and contacted David Draiman and told him he was putting this link on his own website.
Thank you, I have watched this more than once. I appreciate the education and emotion.
Love the fact that there’s no long drawn out into! Subbed!!!
I’m not a religious person. But, if there is a god, David’s voice is how I would picture God’s voice being.
Love your reaction! I felt the same the first time I listened to it.
In Italy we say “ he sings with his heart in his hand ... then with our hearts in his hand too!”
You discovered another type of music you (as I) never realised existed
