People love to write off metal as just noise, but metal artists are so incredibly talented. So many are classically trained and complete music nerds! That's one of the reasons I love the genre so much. I introduced my professional opera singer mother to heavy metal when I was a kid and she became obsessed and eventually was the one to teach me all the ways it's similar to classical and operatic music. Now my mom is Disturbed's biggest fan and I loved watching this video because your reactions reminded me so much of my mom's first impressions when hearing them for the first time. It's always such a joy to see the artistry celebrated like this!
I love how he says “this gentleman”... I would have never thought that the first time I listened to disturbed that I would be listening to them singing a Simon and Garfunkel song, via a vocal coach reaction, with them being referred to as “this gentleman” -💖
this video was your first disturbed song? awesome! they've got a lot of other great covers and original music. i'd personally recommend at least checking out The Light and Darkness, i feel like they're both good transition songs from the ballad here and the harder metal/rock they usually prefer.
@@icefox94 oh no, this is not my first disturbed song. I am a long time fan and know all their songs. They touch my soul deeply. I don’t have any education with music, but their songs seem so complicated and simple at the same time. And their songs run deep like a river in my heart. I love it! But when I heard this song, my father was dying that summer... it touched me so deeply. A scar in my heart and their words pierced my grief, while helping me deal with the tragedy. It was a blessing and almost supernatural how it affected me. And I don’t even believe in any of that... They’re interpretation was like they saw my world - amazing
2 points: First that David (the singer) received a personal email from Paul Simon appreciating the rendition shortly after this performance. and second, the best way I've heard this described in respect to the original is that the original was a warning, this version was the anger that the warning was not heeded.
It's why I love both versions. The original has that soft warning gloomy tone to it. And the new one has the power and rage. I love that we have both now.
Joshua Duncan, exactly. The other great side-by-side is "Imagine" by John Lennon and Tool. Lennon's version was hopeful and inspiring, while Maynard's take was with a sarcastic, cynical undertone.
Me too. Grew up with the original, and Dave's version is just fabulous. The words don't come from his mouth, they come from his heart, and you feel every one of them. I love Disturbed's music. It's a real treat to hear Dave's "church voice". I wish they'd play it on the radio more often.
I can tell this guy is a legitimate teacher because he’s humble. “I don’t know how this is done.” He knows what he doesn’t know ... but you just know he’s going to get smart on that technique in the coming weeks and months.
He truly enjoyed the song, I think the fact that he didn't know was a joy to him, so often teachers get stagnant and bored with what they teach, it seems he found bliss in his ignorance, its a trait many of us lose after years of experience, that child like innocence of discovery, I know it was a joy to me to see it
most people have taken to describing simon and garfunkels version was a warning, but disturbeds version is more of an angry reminder, as nothings changed
The look on this man's face!! I have listened to Disturbed's cover of this song so many times one of my all time favorites . And love watching everyone's reactions hearing this for the first time. The excitement is apparent on this man's face . David Draimin's voice blows me away!!! Disturbed you guys ROCK!!
I fully agree. It’s as if the song has grown angry in the years since it was originally sang, because we just aren’t listening. This version is absolutely perfect for where we are today.
Mike: "I can't believe that this wasn't done like this..." That's, almost, exactly what I said when I heard this outstanding version the first time in 2018.
@Todd Hendricks I'm worried for you lol. I've been a Disturbed fan for 20 years and their discography is very different from what this song presents if you are looking for chill sounds 😂😂
Having the flu while singing can provide so much vocal variation in the lower key, it's really about being able to control your breathing through the congestion. The first time I heard this version of The sound of silence which was quite a few months ago, I had such a powerful emotional reaction. I really enjoyed this video.
I know Simon and Garfunkel sang “Sound Of Silence” when I was a teenager. I heard this fellow here I think it was in the 90s.This guy from Disturbed takes it to a whole new level!!!
I love watching people being switched on to this song. This copy brings me to tears all the time. Hair on my arms & neck stands up, my chest becomes a little tight & the tears just happens but in a good way. This man's voice is very soothing to me. Sounds strange but it's a song I get lost in & feel safe in for a few mins at least. Thankyou David, Thankyou Disturbed ❤️🤘
Actually, it’s time all us aging hippie/peaceniks started SHOUTING AT THE TOP OF OUR LUNGS, before it’s too late. I love this rendition. It is not just perfect; it’s NECESSARY !!!
David had the flu this might with 103 fever. 10 min standing ovation. This is an experience...goosebumps and tears. So incredible. At 77 i listen to this a few times a day for inspiration and to calm both. David was asked did he sing like an angel or a devil. I think he responded " yes". Great response by you. Go listen to it again alone. Bathe in it, experience it. If you dont feel, get goose bumps, tear up or just cry then you are souless. Davids voice crawls inside you and grabs your soul.
I have to say that I absolutely love seeing the genuine joy in his face when listening to the song. I've watched many reaction videos to many different songs by other youtubers and most of them have such fake exaggerated expressions so watching this pure reaction was truly a pleasure.
I was in high school when Simon and Garfunkel came out with this song. It was soft and tranquil almost. The words sort of got lost in the melody. When David sings it, it's a pay attention. in your face, slap you up against your head achingly beautiful rendition.
I was in high school then as well and, even though Simon and Garfunkel were the hottest thing around, I thought the song was really boring. I never appreciated it until I heard Disturbed perform it 🤔
Simon and Garfunkel good as they were/are, were too smooth and "soft" to portray the true menace and danger in the message of the song. this is (IMHO) the best version ever.
4 роки тому+4
I think disturbed's much more vocal dynamic and angrier version is a justified interpretation to the message in the original version, many years ago, being ignored. S & G's version was perfectly ok for the time since that version was an initial warning.
Saw a comment on another video for this song and it was the best description I saw for this song... Original... a warning if we don’t listen This version... actually what happened because we didn’t listen to the warning
performed in the choir in school. Was the truest thing my teacher ever said: the best critique you can get from a judge is when they just put the pencil down and listen.
Disturbed totally transformed a beautiful ballad into a beautiful power ballad. I agree with you, sir, David's timing of 'escalation' (going higher, adding pressure, rasp, then grit) was impeccable, so synced with the contents of the lyrics.
It’s crazy to see how someone who sings in a metal band can go back to something like this and totally pull it off as amazing as he did here, the amount of control it takes for something like this is unreal, you know someone is good when they can do this
@@SARA-11-1 While I totally understand your frustration and felt it myself, the song's full unpaused performance is out there - this video is about the particular listener's reaction, and pauses like this help avoid talking over the music, which I personally would hate much more than pauses themselves
He changed it without changing it and it's beautiful. His voice gets right down to your soul with feeling. Love the drums and strings. I too love he arrangement.
I've never looked at it like that. Since Disturbed first released the cover, I've had a hard time even acknowledging the original. This, however, ties them back together in a way that I had not yet thought of
I dont remember where I read it, but i read that one of them really wanted to sing the song in a darker tone but at the times, the other didn't think it would be as big of a hit so they went with a lighter tone. They would be proud of this rendition.
@@jndvs95 that's true. It's been stated in a few interviews decades past i dont remember if it was Simon or Garfunkel that wanted to do it darker though
@@alessioalbanesi3826 they didn't. Paul simon literally can't because he passed. The interview was with Draiman, in which he said he had gotten word that art Garfunkle had seen the conan performance and thought it was amazing
I absolutely LOVE watching the reacts to this. David Draiman has some legit pipes and to just see the looks on your faces, not only hearing him for the first time, but hearing THIS. Beautiful. LOL the smile on my dudes face at the 5 minute mark. He got the feels. And just gotta say man. Your reactions are straight up genuine and it shows. You love the art, and it shows. We are all smiling right along with you when he just lights it up. Good react vid. And yea...that build up...intense. It's ok to cry :)
Something else that really sells this version for me is that as his voice builds, the accompaniment builds also. When he's soft and gentle, it's just the piano. As his voice grows the orchestra starts in, and finally the powerful timpani as it hits the peak. Very moving song that gives me goose bumps every time I hear it!
There's a video of him talking about how they determined the arrangement of the song. When to do what and where, etc. Very interesting. Ill post link here if i can find it 👍🏻
The absolute, genuine happiness on Mr. Goodrich's face when he hit those higher notes was lovely to see. As someone who doesn't know the technical side of music but appreciates the beauty of the voice, it's nice to see others appreciate a genre that doesn't always get recognized.
There are two Aussie singers that have done covers u may enjoy. The first is John Farnham aka Farnsey, aka The Voice. He's done a cover of the Beatles song Help. Listen to the one from his concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, I think it was in 1987. Any song from this concert will blow u away. Oh & he also does a cover of ACDC's Long Way To The Top, from the same concert. Both covers were encores after already performing for over 2hrs. I'll add that u may love to hear him sing (audio only) Led Zep's Black Dog.. which was a sound check/warm up for a concert, & the audio guy recorded it. All from this guy who first came to the Aussie public's attention, in 1967, sing Sadie The Cleaning Lady. The second is Kasey Chambers doing a cover of Eminem's Lose Yourself. I won't give too much away except to say... wait for it!! Ever seen banjo shredding? This is my fav version of Sound Of Silence, & the one I love to sing myself. x
Your facial expressions are total gold. You epitomise how we all felt the first time we heard this. I still react with shock and awe every time if I'm honest.
Gotta say, out of all the "Voice Teachers" that I've watched react to this, you are the only one who actually seemingly knew how to to teach. Everyone else just points out obvious things, but you actually have good advice for people to take lessons from.
I love when you said what he did with his voice matched so well with the lyrics that you couldn't believe it wasn't done that way originally. What a compliment! I appreciated your expertise and the labeling of the notes David hit on.
Catch one of the Live Performance recordings....which I like better than Disturbed OFFICIAL recording. The Official was rather angry for much more of the song; these "live" versions have more nuance and are fantastic.
My son played this for me the other day and I have never heard an interpretation like this. Your analysis is spot on, Davis Draimand's vocals are incredible. The soul feels the honesty and reverence for this song and that can't be faked.
The Simon & Garfunkel version was a caution/warning for us. The Disturbed version shows some of the anger for the warning not being heeded. Personally, I'm loving these reaction videos from you. Thank you for taking the time to make them and sharing them with us!
Google Paul Simon’s comment on this performance. Powerful. And I agree with this assessment and analysis. Listen or listen again to PTX version of this song. It is their own version (with new member Matt) but you can see how they we influenced by Disturbed’s version,
The best way I've heard the song described is this: Simon and Garfunkel sang the song as a warning. Disturbed sang it as anger because the warning wasn't headed. I entirely understand what you mean about covers. Most of the best are ones that transformed the song into an entirely new form. Nobody cares if someone sings a song in the same way we're used to. It's when they make it into something new that we remember them. I loved your reaction. I could see all the times that you wanted to pause the video and make a comment but didn't want to interrupt the music. You are a true lover of music.
It reminds me of how "Hurt" was transformed when Johnny Cash sang it. I was thinking of this when i heard Pink's cover of "Me and Bobby McGee." She sang it well, but did nothing new with it. It was just the same song.
Oh I just LOVED how much he loved this rendition of this iconic song..he literally glowed while describing how he felt, and praised David D 😊😊😊..every time I hear this song, I feel enveloped in it and his voice, and I figure he felt that too…
There's two amazing parts about this cover 1) how he covers a couple octave jumps through the song, he really takes you on a journey starting low and building higher and higher with his vocals as the pace picks up. 2) the fact that he can sing like that with all the damage to his throat. He said in an interview with Loudwire that he has severe acid reflux and the flap in his throat is 95% just gone, that he had it fixed once and now there's nothing left for him to fix so he has to be really careful with his diet, make sure not to eat within a couple hours of bed and he has to sleep elevated so it doesn't try to come back up on him.. yet he can still sing like that. I know some people are going to say it's not true, but that's what he said in an interview so I believe the man himself. I just thought of something, he kind of reminds me of Bob Segar. Back in the day Bob sang deep really comfortably and then could go pretty high with it and still have it clean and his natural was a mid level somewhat high pitch. I will say I think David has more of a range than Bob did though.. but I can't help but want to hear him sing Like a Rock or Katmandu now :P (or maybe even Mainstreet, even if Uncle Kracker did a great cover of it)
I love David Draiman's version of this song. However, I never could have fathomed watching a reaction video of the performance could make it even better. If I'm ever having a bad day, I'm watching this teacher express sheer, unbridled joy listening to this piece of music. I can't think of anything more uplifting. Thank you sir.
David has been under the vocal tutelage of Melissa Cross for the past several years. He has credited her with teaching him how to combine rasp and vibrato in a safe and effective manner.
I'd love to see you react to Devin Townsend. He's a great, underrated metal singer who has an amazing vocal range. A good place to start would be Kingdom (EMGtv live), it shows off his vocal talent and personality nicely. I really like your genuine enthusiasm and appreciation of singers/musicians in your reaction!
I love it when a singer can actually sing. For Michael Jackson, his dancing was his song, the words living in his movements. For David, his voice becomes the song. It is an amazing and breathtaking talent. I like Mike Goodrich. He has intelligence that has become wisdom. Priceless in this world. I subscribed.
I heard this cover before the original and to me, this rendition is "better" to me. It matches the lyrics perfectly. This version gives me goosebumps every time and I've seen so many reactions to this version. I enjoy it every time.

I was wrong in my judgement. I’m an old man that was blindsided by how good this song was.

I love how he says “this gentleman”... I would have never thought that the first time I listened to disturbed that I would be listening to them singing a Simon and Garfunkel song, via a vocal coach reaction, with them being referred to as “this gentleman” -💖
hahah agreed
I love this comment
this video was your first disturbed song? awesome! they've got a lot of other great covers and original music. i'd personally recommend at least checking out The Light and Darkness, i feel like they're both good transition songs from the ballad here and the harder metal/rock they usually prefer.
@@vwiccy This is amazing. Music can do amazing things. I hope you're doing okay now with your father's passing. My condolences 💙
This version of this song delivers the MESSAGE of the song. Period.
2 points: First that David (the singer) received a personal email from Paul Simon appreciating the rendition shortly after this performance.
and second, the best way I've heard this described in respect to the original is that the original was a warning, this version was the anger that the warning was not heeded.
Agreed.
And never will be heeded.
It may not be heeded but that is our own fault.
Every time I hear Disturb's version of this piece, I end up in tears.
You're not alone....

I dig that.
Smartest shit I’ve read today...
The look on this man's face!! I have listened to Disturbed's cover of this song so many times one of my all time favorites . And love watching everyone's reactions hearing this for the first time. The excitement is apparent on this man's face . David Draimin's voice blows me away!!!

I fully agree. It’s as if the song has grown angry in the years since it was originally sang, because we just aren’t listening. This version is absolutely perfect for where we are today.
S&G’s was the warning, Disturbs’s “Ten Thousand Fists” was the fight, this version is the reminder.
Mike: "I can't believe that this wasn't done like this..." That's, almost, exactly what I said when I heard this outstanding version the first time in 2018.

I was in high school then as well and, even though Simon and Garfunkel were the hottest thing around, I thought the song was really boring. I never appreciated it until I heard Disturbed perform it 🤔
So agree with you!
And the video makes the meaning and symbolism jump out at you.
Simon and Garfunkel good as they were/are, were too smooth and "soft" to portray the true menace and danger in the message of the song.
this is (IMHO) the best version ever.
I think disturbed's much more vocal dynamic and angrier version is a justified interpretation to the message in the original version, many years ago, being ignored. S & G's version was perfectly ok for the time since that version was an initial warning.

performed in the choir in school.

This is my fav version of Sound Of Silence, & the one I love to sing myself. x

The Simon & Garfunkel version was a caution/warning for us. The Disturbed version shows some of the anger for the warning not being heeded.

Thank you for you kind words and that is great insight on those 2 versions. I agree!
Google Paul Simon’s comment on this performance. Powerful. And I agree with this assessment and analysis.
Listen or listen again to PTX version of this song. It is their own version (with new member Matt) but you can see how they we influenced by Disturbed’s version,
The best way I've heard the song described is this:
Simon and Garfunkel sang the song as a warning.

Oh I just LOVED how much he loved this rendition of this iconic song..he literally glowed while describing how he felt, and praised David D 😊😊😊..every time I hear this song, I feel enveloped in it and his voice, and I figure he felt that too…
The look of awe and astonishment on the voice teacher's face, especially the second half of the song, is awesome.
