one of the rare cases when the cover is better than the original.
Yes. Akin to Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt." An unexpected elevation to an already great original.
@@VideosbyLisaLisaand Jimi's cover of All along the Watchtower
Yes....I believe even Paul Simon said that it's their song now, they've taken it to another level.
Greatest cover of any song ever, IMHO.
I must agree. Paul Simon said what he had to say, but this is what he *meant*.
Check out the live version on Conan. In an interview he said that he was sick and had a fever that day and the show’s producers wanted to cancel and reschedule but David refused and they put a stool on stage for him to sit on. And still he gave an outstanding performance. Also, they are a heavy metal band that began in the mid 1990’s. Lead singer David Draiman is a classically trained Cantor.
Getting to see the live performance is so amazing. I was disappointed, when I saw them in West Palm, that it was an outdoor venue because i felt robbed of the acoustics the Conan audience had lol. Otherwise, the West Palm show was incredible
And it's autotuned.
@@justaguy1109and he was angry about it! He did give an excellent interview with Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice and explained what was going on with his health at that time. It was a great interview!
Yes need to react to the live version aswell
I agree...sick or not that is my favorite performance of this. So glorious.
The Simon & Garfunkel original was the warning, The Disturbed cover is the rage that the warning was ignored.
If this song doesn’t make the hair on the back of your neck stand up I question whether you have a soul. Absolutely amazing rendition of a beautiful song.
Seeing your reaction to this song, I think I will stop being ashamed of my own reactions... That's how I react every time I listen to this brilliant performance. Thank you :-)
Exactly what I was thinking . Subbed because I enjoyed your reaction so much 😊
If the number of views counted repeats, it would probably be 5, 10, 15 billion. Can't listen just once. Four or five times, then months go by, then for some other reason, four or five times again is how it goes for me.
I've been a fan of Disturbed for many years now. When this came out, it felt like they gave me the most unexpected gift: not only did they bring attention back to a classic that felt like it had been lost in the memes and one phrase jokes, but they gave this song the true power it had been missing all these years.
David Draiman was raised as an Orthodox Jew and his amazing voice is due to the fact that not only was he born with it, but he is also a trained Cantor. I've also learned that David Draiman and Disturbed addresses depression, addiction, and suicide during every concert, performance offering support and understanding. They are one of the most popular, beloved Heavy Metal bands! Diane ❤❤❤😊
David said in an interview that he spends about 45 minutes in the booth when recording vocals for a typical Disturbed track. He spent 3 hours in the booth making sure his vocals were perfect for such an important song.
I always loved the original but this cover is elemental, raw, powerful and moving. It’s my new favourite version.
Try the Pentatonix version...of this version
Your appreciation for this performance brought me so much happiness. You geek out on it (and I mean that in the best way possible!) like I do. I loved how you watched it through (with utter enthusiasm and joy), and then went through it again to break down the technical and stylistic points. A total gem of a reaction video!
So true ❤
Thank you for actually doing a reaction first, and a discussion after. So many do this during song, with to many stops. This was way more fun and enjoyable :)
He trained as a Jewish cantor for 5 years prior to Heavy Metal.
"...professional opera singer and beatboxer..." what 😄 Now thats a combo lol. I saw many reactions, this version never gets old, but your reaction is one of the best, if not THE best. Pure emotions and passion, it was a joy to watch.
Caught my attention, too.
Wait, what? Did my guy say what I thought he said?😂
The best cover of the song! The emotions David Draiman put into it are so palpable! Love it! 🤟 Disturbed 🤘
I have watched over 100 different reaction videos of this version of Sound of Silence ( my favorite song) by Disturbed and you are the first person to actually understand the words and context of this song. Your response was very heartfelt and therapeutic. I applaud you and your heart. God Bless
It’s so refreshing to see that there are still people out there who feel music as much as they hear it.
You sir listen like I do with your whole body and mind. I can’t sit still through this. If I look at someone having feelings be I want to shake them. 😅
100% agree this was an amazing reaction I love it. Brad if you haven't seen it the charismatic voice has a great reaction as well. Started a full exploration of metal for her!
I love this and have watched it a lot. I had no idea who Disturbed was before this song so imagine my shock when I listened to other songs and realized they were heavy metal. Turns out now I like heavy metal too.
The production design and the cinematography is incredible. Black and White has such power.
I still get chills and i have heard it probably 200 times or more. Its so powerful and the ebb and swell of the music is superb. The classical guitar work brings me to tears. It is so beautiful.
They are traditionally a very heavy metal band, but David had classical training in choir (father is a pastor I believe).
He sings it so clean and beautifully. Truly portrays the outrage and disappointment that the warning Simon & Garfunkel sang was not listened to, and the problems and disconnect between people might be even worse now.
Both father and grandfather were Jewish Cantors. David trained, even went to Israel for training as a Cantor. That were the haunting, resonating tones comes from.
I have watched a few reactions to this song but never watched a reactor ‘feel’ the song like this. Incredible to watch you literally feel the sounds. Love it
I like the live performance on Conan even more. When Paul Simon heard this he shared it on his own social media pages.
I've been looking for someone to do this format for music. Just listen uninterrupted once and just FEEL the song. Then comes the analysis, which you hit most of what I've noticed listening to this one well over 100 times at this point.
If you want to hear the Disturbed their fans know, Down With the Sickness is required listening. Just remind yourself about Sound of Silence immediately after to appreciate just how incredible of a singer David Draiman is.
yes, I really appreciated the uninterrupted run-through too!
This. This is the appropriate reaction to this song.
This is the best reaction/analysis of this piece to date.
And I've seen 100s of these reactions
A singer myself with no religious affiliation, I recently had the opportunity to perform a piece that was backed by trained cantors. I found that there's something special and unique in what they can do.
David is a trained cantor. He can do this live, he's amazing!!.
Such a powerful piece. Paul Simon heard this version and posted it on his own website. He loved it. I love the boat full of instruments at the end coming to the people with the lyrics.
Thanks again
The best way I've heard this cover described is: The original was a warning by Simon and Garfunkel about what could happen. This version is the anger that that warning was ignored, and it has now come to pass.
🎼 ...can we regain...the sound...of silence?
Wow! Thank you for reacting so physically! You portrayed what this song does for me, and it was refreshing to watch you enjoy it in the same way!
Being a child in the 1950's and '60's, Simon and Garfunkel's _Sound of Silence_ produces a visceral reaction in me. The song was so appropriate for the time it was written; and continues to be appropriate. When The Charismatic Voice did a reaction to Disturbed's rendition, I was reluctant to the idea of a metal version of this old favorite. I was surprised to greatly appreciate the Disturbed version. I realized the importance of the Disturbed arrangement to the current time.
Thank you for the analysis of this video from your perspective. Your format of reaction to the video in one piece; and then the analysis, breaking down the video piece by piece, is wonderful teaching tool. Thank you!
This version of this song gets me every time, rushes right through me. Beautiful reaction, Daniel, as always.
I'm not a musician, but I still enjoyed and appreciated your musical analysis of this piece. I also admire how David Draiman takes care of himself. I normally think of rock and metal musicians as hard partiers, especially after a show, but Draiman is known to immediately return to his hotel room in order to rest and help his voice recuperate.
The original, was "The Warning".... this version is the Anger...for not Heeding the Warning.
David draiman is trained in opera as well. He attributes that training with the reason he can do the metal growl and not strain his vocal chords
Simon and Garfunkel were incredible and I always had their version high on my list of classic rock songs, but it wasnt until I heard this version how out of place the duo were singing to these lyrics in such an upbeat and happy, folksy manner. The lyrics don't speak the way they sang it. Disturbed (David) sang this the way the lyrics were meant to be sung.
Great review! Your analysis and authentic passion for the music was very refreshing and endearing.
Definitely one of the best reactions I´ve seen of this Amazing cover. You must be a Great teacher, if you do vocal coaching, I can feel your passion through the way that you feel the song. Greetings from Argentina and Thank you!!
Thanks for a great reaction. One of the best and your analysis of the meaning of the lyrics too
Love your comments. Although I have listened to this hundreds of times, I really appreciate all of those who choose to listen to this for the first time It makes the amazing presentation of this even sweeter.
This was wonderful.
Edit: I'm a little drunk, forgive me. But let me elaborate:
I loved how you weren't afraid to show us the emotions you were feeling, and I loved that you appreciated the intricacies of what David was doing with his voice to elicit those emotions.
It is often difficult to put into words thge things I am feeling, but with this you took some of thevwords out of ny mouth, and I appreciate that.
Very respectful reaction. Thanks.
I love finally seeing someone else that reacts so physically to music! It’s like an electricity running through your whole body, or at least it is for me. This is a great version of one of my favorite songs! So glad to finally get a chance to enjoy your reaction. ❤️🎶
Did u notice every note was exactly on key, even when a word fades out slowly, it doesn't drop or clime as a lot of singers do, just stays even to the end. Shear perfection😊
I love how much you get into the music when you listen. It makes me re-appriciate it all over again. Thanks.
If you only knew the 'style' of Disturbed you would realize the stark change from their usual heavy metal music such as 'Down With The Sickness'! I like your appreciation of both the visuals and as you say "the rawness" that he weights the music. Diving into the emotion of the lyrics and his performance was nice to experience. An artist, as you know, can express that emotion. Nice work.
I am so glad you did not pause to analyze. You felt the entire buildup..the first so far to react in this way. Thank you.
Thank you for doing a song reaction the correct way. Listen to the song all the way through without interrupting then go back through and break it down. UA-camrs always rob themselves of truly experiencing the peice the way it's intended to be received when they pause it to talk every 5 seconds.
Daniel, I admire your insight to analyzing this song. I love that you know nothing of Disturbed and David Dramain, yet in conveying your analysis of the song, you are describing David's personality and his passion for helping people who are in the darkness of their addiction.
Thank you for such a an awesome reaction/analysis ❤
Absolutely the best reaction I have seen for this piece, and I have listened to A TON of them. Thank you!
Congratulations. I have seen a hundred reactions to this song. Yours was the best.
I really enjoyed your initial reaction and following analysis. You kept remarking on the "darkness" mode that was used here... I think that they used light & dark to resemble sound & silence where dark is silence and sound is light... when you spoke of a "pinprick of light" in the darkness, it was like a small sound amidst a great silence. I have to mention that my initial reaction was very similar to yours except I was watching the live version from the Conan show... I really encourage you to check that one out. Great Job!
I really enjoyed your reactions and comments. I appreciate hearing your perspective.😊
I found your channel and subscribed to it today. I love ❤that song and that man's voice. I cried.
Such value in your analysis. Fantastic! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!! ❤
I appreciate your reaction very much. One of the best on youtube. Great!
The Grandfather of Heavy Metal Music is Classical Music
I have watched many reactions of this but yours is by far the very best. You share your emotions so honestly.
Listening Wintersun from Finland 🇫🇮💪🏻🙏🏻❤️ terveisiä Suomesta!
I've seen a few different reactions to this song and yours by far was the most entertaining!
Great reaction! I like reactors who do analysis. I grew up listening to opera so i have a special place in my heart for opera singers. I see in your profile that you are intetested in storytelling. A British artist named Ren is a master storyteller. I would love to see you react to his piece Hi Ren. Im off to check out some of your other reactions.
The greatest cover of all time. A cover so great it surpasses the original by orders of magnitude. A cover so fantastic it could be considered the best song ever.
First, Dude, your reaction is awesome. Spot on. Pretty close to how I, a singer myself, felt about it.
I am, however, a long time student of philosophy, starting with my college education many years ago. One point I think you will appreciate: the neon light that stabs his eyes in the first verse is shown here as light shining between the trees as the musician trudges forth. The imagery to me is obvious: they're doing Plato's Cave. Having seen the light, they come back into the darkness to tell what they have found.
The live performance of this on Conan is great too, if you have interest.
great comments for a great song
I love how you review songs. Listen through and react, then commentary. Couldn’t agree more with your critique.
WOW. your descriptions of depression and darkness, just WOW. thank you
Their rendition of "Land of Confusion" is a serious banger, and the music video has a definite Pink Floyd vibe to it.
Really appreciate both your reaction and then your analysis! (I've watched enough reactions and or commentary) on this performance of this song) Well done! Well explained. Thank you!
Amazing reaction to an amazing song!!
You Crack me up. You have a little head banger in you I suspect...thanks for the reaction.
Love your reaction, thank you 👍🏻
You should watch him, singing this incredible song..LIVE ON CONAN! ITS EVEN MORE AMAZING!!
David Draiman... one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho. Amazing tone...awesome control to his voice. Can sing sweetly (both baritone and tenor) and can sing hard and with distortion! Also he can actually put vibrato on the distortion which is extremely hard to do! Great job reacting sir.
I have watched a heap of reactions, but yours is one of the best. The live on Conan is better I think. Luv from Australia ❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️
I’ve watched this reaction a 100x but for some reason this was the first time I thought about it from a singer/musicians perspective and it mad me cry. Thank you… keep doing this. I have suggestions if you need them. I live reactions but you have an understanding
Paul Simon heard this Version. He Loved it so much that it's on his Play List. 🥰
Your analysis was so moving and gave me so much to think about. There was so much you put into words that I have felt but had no words for. Thank you for that.
Agreed
I've seen many (many) reactions to this song over the last couple years. I've enjoyed your analysis the most. Subscribed.✔
Ditto
Your joy,
Brought me joy.
Thank you
Thanks for the review, now go and watch one of their own songs. It will make you appreciate this one even more.
David Draiman began his musical training as a cantor. He is classically trained.
This cover is such a gem.
Thank you for your reaction to this one. Before watching and listening to you live it, I could not understand why or how it affects me like it does. ❤
So many more great Metal singers to react to, that will be a journey if you dare... 🙂
Make sure that you listen to this version/cover Live on Conan ... he had a high fever and the flu, but STILL nailed it !!! ❤❤❤❤
So I saw Disturbed live in February. He does the piece justice without all of the editing! All 4 guys are absolutely talented. Check out their live rendition on Conan! You will be even more impressed!
One of the best Covers ever... Disturbed have many good Covers in the repertoire!🫶🫶🤘
Your reaction gave me.goosebumps!
Your joy to this is captivating. He's an amazing vocalist
This version always makes me 😭! His voice is beautiful and always so powerful.😊🖤🤘
It's always great to find someone who feels the music 🎶!
Easily the best rendition of this fantastic Simon and Garfunkel song.
Simon and Garfunkel's version was a plea to the people of the world to listen to the message and unplug from technology. At the time it was TV. Disturbed's version is pissed off people didn't listen to the message. Look where we are now with cellphones and the internet in our hands. People don't acknowledge each other and there's no longer any compassion or empathy for each other in this world. Live your own truth is the motto today.
I have heard this cover so many times and every time it grabs me ..Hes phenomenal... classically trained as a cantor....Best Cover EVER!!!
He's a Hard Rock/Metal singer. You'll find a lot of singers in this genre will hang on consonants. I think part of it is too stray from the classical and traditionally expected to draw attention, but it also adds that raw gutteral feel to it that a lot of that genre is trying to tap into.
I agree you have to check out the live Conan performance. Yes there is auto tune. He was very unhappy that they added that. So good though!!
My spidey senses say you've heard this before
Also, be sure to react to their live performance on Conan. NOTE: David Draiman was really sick for the Conan live performance, and I heard he was not pleased with his performance. Being the perfectionist that he is, I can understand why he felt that way. However, the production as a whole performance was amazing, and his was EXCEPTIONAL! I loved it. So POWERFUL and EMOTIONAL! - Disturbed "The Sound Of Silence" 03/28/16 | CONAN on TBS Team Coco Thanks, Diane ❤😊
You should definitely listen to the Pentatonix version. Then you have three completely different approaches. Simon & Garfunkel with their warning, Disturbed with the anger and Pentatonix with the hope.
Isn't this just the best. Very few covers can keep up with that.
LIVE ON CONAN!!!!
You should hear their performance on Conan. I flip-flop between which I find the best. The visuals in this video are strong and delivers the original message beautifully. The live performance on Conan is gorgeous. He actually was sick when he performed this. This band is heavy metal. David Draman, the vocalist, trained as a cantor. His range is unbelievable.
