Even those of us that grew up with the Simon and Garfunkle version are moved by this version. I cry whenever I hear this
In an interview, he said this song was the hardest thing he had ever performed vocally due to the high tenor cleans. Amazing even while ill.
What is a high tenor cleans?
Doing the high notes without his usual distortion so it's "clean" it isn't distorted in any way
He can sing high tenor cleans
David’s voice obviously is what makes this song. But can we give it up for the timpani player. This song would be completely different without it. Such a powerful compliment to David’s vocals
Especially considering he only has two drums and has to constantly tune them on the fly.
And how about David singing with the mallets pounding away RIGHT over his shoulder lol
I just saw Disturbed this weekend and David performed this song. He absolutely exceeded my expectations not only with this song, but the entire concert! Such an amazing vocalist! If anyone ever has the opportunity to see them live, I would recommend without reservation!
Total bucket list for me, but catching him in Houston when I have the money is almost impossible
I’m seeing them at Knotfest in Sydney in 2 months and I am LEVITATING with excitement
Indeed...He had the flue when he performed this. The original music video of the cover is still one of the most moving pieces ever. David D is a amazing human. His compassion and support for mental health is like none other.
* Flu -It's short for the name "Influenza".
* A flue is a duct, pipe, or opening in a chimney for conveying exhaust gases from a fireplace, furnace, water heater, boiler, or generator to the outdoors.
@HerriCaine Thank you for the correction Karen.
@@johndandrea8034Petty are we. Be thankful for the correction you might have embarrassed yourself elsewhere.
@johnandrea8034 no need to get defensive and call names. Be appreciative that he respectfully educated you. Or tried to.
@@danieldaponte1819This isn’t the place to correct someone. I’m saying this as a language teacher. What you are doing is showing your superior language/spelling skills. We all knew what he meant.
I was teen when Simon & Garfunkel came out, & their style is completely different. When I heard this one (a year ago) it also blew me away and I also like it more than the Simon & Garfunkel version. It is a very touching delivery!
Same here. I loved the Simon & Garfunkel version. And still do, but I like this one better because he brings so much passion to the song.
Old head here, absolutely agree.@@debbieholoquist2059
In an interview on The Charismatic Voice he said that during this performance he actually had a lesion on his vocal chord that he was working around, which he had surgery for a couple of years ago.
He’s a classically trained Cantor by his Jewish Cantor grandfather- best Cantor ever ❤
Also how do you put a vibrato on a distortion ? He’s phenomenal ❤
Your comment about leaning on character when not up to par was spot on, and has produced some of the best performances. Freddie Mercury's famous LiveAid performance was not advised by his doctor (throat infection; do not sing). LOL "The Show Must Go On".
My favourite comment about this is that Simon and Garfunkel gave the warning and this is the rage that we didn’t listen.
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, Disturbed does not use autotune, ever! Draiman was really upset when he found out his performance on Conan had been autotuned! I guess the producers of the show use it for all live performances. The band had no clue ahead of time. Still love the original video more!
Yeah, I'd heard he was quite angry about it being there, at all. And yet? I only heard it a couple of times, and only used barely. I'm not sure if his performance would have been as solid without it honestly. But as Peter pointed out, it's just stunning to hear the amount of control over his sound in this for him having a triple digit fever.
Davids cover of this song gives me goosebumps every time. Magnificent. Great analysis as always Peter.
It's crazy that his "Flu voice" is better than I've ever dreamt of singing... as a vocalist myself, he just blows me away.
Davids voice is so beautiful. wild to be this good while sick
The impressive fact is that he didn't have the flue.
He admitted in an interview that he had a bleeding lesion on his vocal cords.
Mindblowing.
I went to their concert, (I am in my fifties,) I took my daughter, she wasn't familiar with them. When this song first came out, I had to find out who the band was. When I found out it who it was, I took my daughter, Breaking Ben, she loves so I surprised her with the tickets! SHE LOVED THEM, I think more than Breaking Ben. All I can say is, DISTURBED IS AMAZING!!!! They are one of my FAVORITE bands!!!!
I’m an older (57) patent attorney that loves music. I describe for a living. When I saw your picture with the ball cap and tank, I was expecting a reaction along the lines of “Dude, sick!” Instead I learned more about singing than I ever thought possible. Kudos to you. Liked and subscribed.
Most amazing voice, sick or not, powerful, great vocals!
Best cover of anything... EVER!! :D
What a coincidence! I just saw them in concert last night and of course he sung this. It was a great concert.
hey I was there too 😁 fantastic show!!
I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and this blows them out of the water. It's my favorite version ever. The video is fabulous and i cry every time i see it. Very moving
Same here. I was a teen when Simon and Garfunkel did it and I loved it, but as soon as I heard this one by Disturbed, I was blown away.
No matter how often I listen to this song I get goosebumps every single time
Same... doesn't matter how many times. Its just musical deliciousness! So many goosebumps!
Love, Love, Love Disturbed's version of this sick or not. Love your analysis/reactions. Thanks Peter ❤😊
David Draiman ...amazing vocals! I really don't know anyone that could sing that well "live" and "sick"! The man can sing... man, he can even put vibrato on distortion! ....which is incredibly difficult to do. Only know a very few that can do that... and they don't do it as well or as frequently. Well done DD!
His Voicals are amazing but there are actually other singers that have passed and some that had not. They have amazing Voicals and sang sick.
How do you actually put vibrato on distortion????? He’s phenomenal ❤
He is classically trained and started singing as a young boy in synagogue as a cantor.
This was a fantastic performance by this metal artist. I think he trained as a Cantor. It is so complex. It sounds so different from the fast, folk style song sung by Simon and Garfunkel in 1964, and different from the Pentatonix version. You, as a professionally trained opera singer, hear very differently than I do, and have the language to describe it. Very educational. Thanks. This viewing on Conan has 139 million views. I think I have watched it 10 times.
Ur voice is incredible! I could listen to u talk all day!
David really got "Down with the Sickness" lol
Thanks for the walk through of this song! David's voice serves the delivery of each section beautifully. This is truly my favorite version.
of course him being sick didn't affect him, he's down with the sickness!
Speaking of singing with choreography. Pink might just be the goat when it comes to that stuff
I've heard performers talk about "stage health" before. Where beforehand and after, you are all but dead, but when its time to take the stage, you somehow muster the ability to nail the performance.
I have seen hundreds of reactions to this. Yours is my fav so far.
You are articulate, calm, clear and interesting to listen too.
I know nothing about singing, vocal technique etc (not that interested really), but your video was a joy to listen too.
Subbed.
I grew up with the Simon and Garfunkel version, but David's powerful performance has me loving both.
I usually skip through all the chat and talking just to see people's facial reactions, just to see the joy and surprise. I just listened through all 31 minutes. Thank you for this reaction. Thank you for your knowledge. God speed sir.
The band decided to do a stripped-down version and when Paul Simon heard this version it's the best cover he's ever heard of this song and he was going to put it down on his playlist on he was amazed
I have listened to many, many different trainers.... but you.... we're the best to listen to. Your just so perfect with you words and what is happening. Thank you
David is an absolutely phenomenal performer and human being. All of Disturbed is! I was lucky enough to see them in concert about a month ago, and it was an experience I'll never forget. If you ever get the chance to go to see them live, please do, it will be something you've never experienced before.
My one gripe for this performance is that they autotuned him a few times. It's barely noticeable, but I can hear it on a couple of transitions. Even sick as he was, he didn't need the help. He sounded amazing. At any rate, thank you for the excellent analysis and video, Peter! Hugs and love from California!
I read a few times from people that he wasn’t happy that they added auto tune, he didn’t ask for it but they did it anyway he was fuming.
@@sharonclark4002 I don't blame him, he has been doing this for decades without auto tune I'd be fuming too
Actually I watched an interview he gave, and what he had is a growth on his vocal chords during this performance. He had it operated on after this, and couldn't talk for 3 months. He said nothing about being sick.
Superb analysis of vocal range
Another amazing and full of vocal knowledge video! Thank you so much brother! This is a banger of a song for a non studio version performance and given the circumstances, this was literally phenomenal beyond belief! Thank you once again! I'm gonna be waiting for your next one! Hopefully after Czechia TBG stuff!!! Ayyy!!
I've loved this song since I first heard Simon and Garfunkel's dreamlike despair of reaching people. The Disturbed version reminds me of frustrated anger that people are blocked from hearing. Both are favorites of mine for different reasons.
Just listen to the official video. The visuals are amazing
Thank you Peter for a wonderful analysis. My ears opened up to a few more things. When I first saw this, I was impressed at how much it sounded like the studio version.....then I learned that he was sick during this, and I had even more respect for him....My respect and admiration for him grew even more after watching his interview with Elizabeth. He is such a wonderful person, and great entertainer.
Thanks Peter! I’d love to see you react to Australia’s legendary Voice, John Farnham (Elisabeth has also looked at a couple of his songs and swooned 😜). Always do his live versions, never his recorded performances, and if you want a hot tip, start with his performances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - notably his cover of the Beatles “Help” and “You’re the Voice”. If you enjoy his stuff, he’s known as the man who can sing anything, and even dabbles with opera ‘just for fun’ sometimes and freakin’ nails it! And no matter how much he moves, he hits nearly every note with perfection. See what you make of him 🙂
Yasss - great call. Did you catch his recent statement post regarding his positive response to mouth surgery?
🖖🏼🇦🇺
You may already be aware that David was trained to be a cantor so his mid to low range is pretty developed. Thanks, Peter!
I've watched most of the reactions to this, and I think yours is the most detailed breakdown of what he's doing with his voice. Great reaction!
One of my favorite live performances ever. Love your channel. Your Jinjer, Pisces reaction video was awesome. This is the second video I have seen. Already a notified subscriber.
My best explanation is that Disturbed's version speaks to the modern culture, whereas Simon & Garfunkel spoke to their generation.
It is amazing that he can do this good of job while he is sick. Gave me the chills.
This is my first time I’ve been introduced to him and he definitely is an awesome singer. I’m big into vibrato and he has a beautiful vibrato here. I’m really enjoying the videos you make especially your reactions and actually putting names to the techniques used by singers and why they do them.
Look up his duet with Myles Kennedy - live in Dallas, I believe. I’d love to hear that review.
It is heavenly! Didn’t think this could be improved on, but the two of them 🤯
This absolutely elevated David to Rock Divinity Status...and one of the few covers that is unQUESTIONably superior to the original.👌💯💪
He's voice give me goosebumps
Thank you, Peter. I enjoy your technical breakdowns. I'm looking forward to you and Elizabeth discussing music and singing. 👍💯👏👏👏👏👏
I’ve watched and listened to this performance a number of times, but I especially enjoyed you digging in and dissecting David’s singing, as a professional
QUESTION....Peter, do you have the gift of Perfect Pitch. I am always amazed how you can hear a note and tell what it is and the key it is in.
Love it! I think you would also enjoy the band Iron Maiden. Bruce Dickinson is one of the best metal vocalist ever. Hallowed Be Thy Name would be a great song to check out.
An especially good suggestion considering how Bruce sings while running and jumping all over the place. "Vocal stability" with a twist.
I read somewhere that when he was younger he started training to be a cantor. while he didn't end up going in that direction, he retained the rock-solid vocal foundations and has used them to excellent effect
I get chills every single time he gets to that gritty neon-god verse! Great reaction Peter. :-)❤
When he says at the start we might not get the best performance because he was sick 🤣🤣🤣 oh my sweet Summer child
😂😂😂
I'm super excited to see/hear your interview with Elizabeth!
My absolute favorite cover. Brilliant!
Yes, I love the original video of this. Very powerful. In a way I have not heard “Sound of Silence” performed before.
wow Peter what a beautiful voice you have! So nice to listen to you!
Heard this live recently when they came to Charlotte. I got goosebumps. Was just magic
Thank you! My personal favorite version of this song is the hound + the fox with Adam Chance. The Zambler’s songs and videos are always brilliant!
Excellent analysis of an unusual version of a well known song. I followed what you were saying and couldn't agree more with your comments. Well done, sir and keep up the good work.
I love your speaking voice, Mr. Barber.
For those of us who did grow up with the original, many love this version better.
I subscribe to both you and the charismatic voice. I can't wait for that video with both you. That should be a great video!
thanks Peter. Really enjoyed your analysis and discussion of this one.
I friggin love this performance, flu and all. Great analysis as usual.
Really interesting, thanks! (I was going to make the Down With The Sickness joke too, so you needn't be too embarrassed 😛) One thing this makes me think is, I would love to see you and Elizabeth do an analysis together. You have very compatible styles (e.g. lots of pausing and rewinding) while still focusing on different details so I think it would work well.
This is an important song for me because I fell into the world of reactions and vocal analysis with it. Then some training and gaining confidence in my singing, and eventually joining a choir singing bass almost 3 years now (at age of 50+). Keep up the good work, I also follow The Bass Gang of course! 💪🎶
In 1964 (hit popularity in 1965) when Simon and Garfunkel released this it was during the Viet Nam War when young people were beginning to realize they had a voice. The message was an impactful wake up/rallying cry with a more gentle voice.
I feel Disturbed’s version is a forceful reminder that we haven’t accomplished what we should have.
Both versions are powerful with same message with different emotions driving them.
(FYI I was a teen in 1964.)
Vietnamese people living under communist tyranny wish they had a voice to rally. Or the weapons to fight back. Weapons you hippies denied us.
I thought of the "down with the sickness" joke at the exact same time. So it made me laugh really hard when you said it. 😂
I am a classically trained vocalist myself and I love David Draiman! I love all kinds of music and he is amazing!
When he sings this at his shows its amazing. Disturbed is fantastic live . I just seen them a few weeks ago . I have seen him a few times always a great show .
He absolutely smashed this performance, considering he had the flu at the time! I love Disturbed and saw this song performed live at Wembley. The atmosphere was incredible!
I’ve never seen anything from you before and I have to say that I’m in love with not just your beautiful voice, but your educated and experienced knowledge of your art. I’m a fan now.
David and Myles Kennedy get a cover of The sound of silence when they were in Houston Texas live I can't remember the date it's hell when you're getting old😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love the contrasts between the original, the Disturbed version, your version, and Geoff's version.
First of all, I just want to reach out and give David a big ol' hug for powering through this song while being under the weather. He's definitely a true artist to be able to do that.
I love this version of The Sound of Silence. I was a teenager when Simon & Garfunkle released it and I really liked it then, but this one brings such power to the tune and lyrics that it touches my soul more. I've read in the comments on Dan Vasc's cover of this song that S&G's more ballad-type version was sending the warning of things that could come, but this powerful version is declaring that those warnings are here, and we are in it. I liked that reflection on the song. Either way, both versions speak to me, and I like them both. And the orchestral music in this is epic!
I enjoyed your analysis throughout the song. It's amazing what can be learned. Thank you. ♥
The algorithm has brought me back to your channel 4x in three days; I'm going to subscribe 😀
I'll take it either way -- Studio or LIVE ... Still chilling!!! Don't know that I'd hear a better version ever tbh!!!! Be Safe
Wow! Looking forward to watch your interview with Elizabeth! That definitelybwould be awsome!
Listened to an interview he gave, he was really sick. Yet most of the people in the audience probably didn't have a clue. He is an incredible artist and performer.
Listening from Kansas. Love your analysis! ❤
I enjoyed listening to your professional break down of this song.
This is a great analysis. Love your comments.
Please react to Chris Cornell at some point, preferably either "Nothing Compares 2 U" or "Fell on Black Days". They are part of a radio broadcast and done with an acoustic setup. Would love to see your take on one of the best vocalists of his generation.
May 2024 still listening to this song and Heart singing Stairway to Heaven all the time.
Peter. I am just subscribed after watching a dozen or so of your videos. I like your fair and informative critique. While I have zero musical ability (Unless you count drunk bar, or campfire singing) Your explanations are fairly clear to me. Great work 👍
i love this song because of the lyrics . but its my first time hearing this song in a very low notes. Very soothing to the ear.
I just saw them in concert on the 12th!
I think you nailed it on why many like this version more than the original. For me it is absolutely the structure/arrangement and the way it builds and climaxes. The use of orchestral instruments also makes it feel more emotional IMO. But they definitely utilized stellar writing give it a poignancy that the original lacks.
I've had this argument with friends several times and another factor is the emotional tone of the song. My sorrow is rage, so of course I'm more tied in to this version. Others are more melancholy and Simon and Garfunkel resonates more. For consolation, Pentatonix, and so on.
Thank you again for another outstanding analysis. 👏 I really appreciate your commentary related to your musical experience, especially since I don't have that background. I would be curious to know about singer placement in relation to instruments. I noticed in this performance, the vocalist is standing right in front of the huge drums as the drummer/tympanist is hammering away on them. Does that make it hard to hear or hard to focus on your melody as a singer? What is your experience...
Your natural voice is really good. So deep and low. Wow! Amazing :)
When you mentioned your head voice being torpedoed... That reminded me the last time I was sick... (now, I came up of there's three registers: Chest, Head, Falsetto) While I was sick, I was checking my voice in the car, and my chest was very limited and blah. I went into my head voice (maybe "mix" for Chest vs head school of thought?) and there was NOTHING! It was so weird. Like maybe middle C, I'm a baritone for reference...
