Indeed...He had the flue when he performed this. The original music video of the cover is still one of the most moving pieces ever. David D is a amazing human. His compassion and support for mental health is like none other.
* Flu -It's short for the name "Influenza". * A flue is a duct, pipe, or opening in a chimney for conveying exhaust gases from a fireplace, furnace, water heater, boiler, or generator to the outdoors.
@@danieldaponte1819This isn’t the place to correct someone. I’m saying this as a language teacher. What you are doing is showing your superior language/spelling skills. We all knew what he meant.
I just saw Disturbed this weekend and David performed this song. He absolutely exceeded my expectations not only with this song, but the entire concert! Such an amazing vocalist! If anyone ever has the opportunity to see them live, I would recommend without reservation!
David’s voice obviously is what makes this song. But can we give it up for the timpani player. This song would be completely different without it. Such a powerful compliment to David’s vocals
In an interview on The Charismatic Voice he said that during this performance he actually had a lesion on his vocal chord that he was working around, which he had surgery for a couple of years ago.
Your comment about leaning on character when not up to par was spot on, and has produced some of the best performances. Freddie Mercury's famous LiveAid performance was not advised by his doctor (throat infection; do not sing). LOL "The Show Must Go On".
He’s a classically trained Cantor by his Jewish Cantor grandfather- best Cantor ever ❤ Also how do you put a vibrato on a distortion ? He’s phenomenal ❤
I’m an older (57) patent attorney that loves music. I describe for a living. When I saw your picture with the ball cap and tank, I was expecting a reaction along the lines of “Dude, sick!” Instead I learned more about singing than I ever thought possible. Kudos to you. Liked and subscribed.
I went to their concert, (I am in my fifties,) I took my daughter, she wasn't familiar with them. When this song first came out, I had to find out who the band was. When I found out it who it was, I took my daughter, Breaking Ben, she loves so I surprised her with the tickets! SHE LOVED THEM, I think more than Breaking Ben. All I can say is, DISTURBED IS AMAZING!!!! They are one of my FAVORITE bands!!!!
SERIOUSLY??? HE KILLED IT ON THIS " LIVE " version whether sick or not!!! It gave me goosebumps... brought tears to my eyes and felt it in my HEART AND SOUL!!! THAT'S POWERFUL!!! GOD BLESSED HIM WITH THAT VOICE!!! DON'T YOU HOPEFULLY CAN DO THAT SOME DAY??? IT'S ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFULLY MIND BLOWING TO ME!
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, Disturbed does not use autotune, ever! Draiman was really upset when he found out his performance on Conan had been autotuned! I guess the producers of the show use it for all live performances. The band had no clue ahead of time. Still love the original video more!
Yeah, I'd heard he was quite angry about it being there, at all. And yet? I only heard it a couple of times, and only used barely. I'm not sure if his performance would have been as solid without it honestly. But as Peter pointed out, it's just stunning to hear the amount of control over his sound in this for him having a triple digit fever.
I was teen when Simon & Garfunkel came out, & their style is completely different. When I heard this one (a year ago) it also blew me away and I also like it more than the Simon & Garfunkel version. It is a very touching delivery!
I have seen hundreds of reactions to this. Yours is my fav so far. You are articulate, calm, clear and interesting to listen too. I know nothing about singing, vocal technique etc (not that interested really), but your video was a joy to listen too. Subbed.
I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and this blows them out of the water. It's my favorite version ever. The video is fabulous and i cry every time i see it. Very moving
This was a fantastic performance by this metal artist. I think he trained as a Cantor. It is so complex. It sounds so different from the fast, folk style song sung by Simon and Garfunkel in 1964, and different from the Pentatonix version. You, as a professionally trained opera singer, hear very differently than I do, and have the language to describe it. Very educational. Thanks. This viewing on Conan has 139 million views. I think I have watched it 10 times.
I've heard performers talk about "stage health" before. Where beforehand and after, you are all but dead, but when its time to take the stage, you somehow muster the ability to nail the performance.
Please react to Chris Cornell at some point, preferably either "Nothing Compares 2 U" or "Fell on Black Days". They are part of a radio broadcast and done with an acoustic setup. Would love to see your take on one of the best vocalists of his generation.
I have listened to many, many different trainers.... but you.... we're the best to listen to. Your just so perfect with you words and what is happening. Thank you
David Draiman ...amazing vocals! I really don't know anyone that could sing that well "live" and "sick"! The man can sing... man, he can even put vibrato on distortion! ....which is incredibly difficult to do. Only know a very few that can do that... and they don't do it as well or as frequently. Well done DD!
There is actually another person who can perform life whilst sick, Floor Jansen from Nightwish. She was sick during a tour in South America, but still managed to belt out the high notes of Ghost Love Score. ( if you are not familiar with this number, look up the “Wacken 2013 rendition”) Again another (symphonic)metal band. These people just know how to sing! My dream duet ( probably never going to happen) is David Draiman with Floor Jansen, 2 power vocalists.
I usually skip through all the chat and talking just to see people's facial reactions, just to see the joy and surprise. I just listened through all 31 minutes. Thank you for this reaction. Thank you for your knowledge. God speed sir.
David is an absolutely phenomenal performer and human being. All of Disturbed is! I was lucky enough to see them in concert about a month ago, and it was an experience I'll never forget. If you ever get the chance to go to see them live, please do, it will be something you've never experienced before. My one gripe for this performance is that they autotuned him a few times. It's barely noticeable, but I can hear it on a couple of transitions. Even sick as he was, he didn't need the help. He sounded amazing. At any rate, thank you for the excellent analysis and video, Peter! Hugs and love from California!
Loved your analysis. I liked how you replayed parts so I didn’t have to rewind, also notes on the piano were helpful. Thank you! I am no singer. I was blown away when I first heard this performance. Powerful, moving.
Thank you Peter for a wonderful analysis. My ears opened up to a few more things. When I first saw this, I was impressed at how much it sounded like the studio version.....then I learned that he was sick during this, and I had even more respect for him....My respect and admiration for him grew even more after watching his interview with Elizabeth. He is such a wonderful person, and great entertainer.
Another amazing and full of vocal knowledge video! Thank you so much brother! This is a banger of a song for a non studio version performance and given the circumstances, this was literally phenomenal beyond belief! Thank you once again! I'm gonna be waiting for your next one! Hopefully after Czechia TBG stuff!!! Ayyy!!
I’ve never seen anything from you before and I have to say that I’m in love with not just your beautiful voice, but your educated and experienced knowledge of your art. I’m a fan now.
I've loved this song since I first heard Simon and Garfunkel's dreamlike despair of reaching people. The Disturbed version reminds me of frustrated anger that people are blocked from hearing. Both are favorites of mine for different reasons.
Actually I watched an interview he gave, and what he had is a growth on his vocal chords during this performance. He had it operated on after this, and couldn't talk for 3 months. He said nothing about being sick.
I’ve watched and listened to this performance a number of times, but I especially enjoyed you digging in and dissecting David’s singing, as a professional
The band decided to do a stripped-down version and when Paul Simon heard this version it's the best cover he's ever heard of this song and he was going to put it down on his playlist on he was amazed
This is an important song for me because I fell into the world of reactions and vocal analysis with it. Then some training and gaining confidence in my singing, and eventually joining a choir singing bass almost 3 years now (at age of 50+). Keep up the good work, I also follow The Bass Gang of course! 💪🎶
I saw panic at the disco a few years back in Portland Oregon. Brendon Urie performed that night with a 103 degree fever cause he had the flu. He even did a backflip off the top platform. His poor voice was really hoarse. Needless to say the next few shows were canceled because he was so ill. The fact that he even tried being that sick was wild.
Thanks Peter! I’d love to see you react to Australia’s legendary Voice, John Farnham (Elisabeth has also looked at a couple of his songs and swooned 😜). Always do his live versions, never his recorded performances, and if you want a hot tip, start with his performances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - notably his cover of the Beatles “Help” and “You’re the Voice”. If you enjoy his stuff, he’s known as the man who can sing anything, and even dabbles with opera ‘just for fun’ sometimes and freakin’ nails it! And no matter how much he moves, he hits nearly every note with perfection. See what you make of him 🙂
One of my favorite live performances ever. Love your channel. Your Jinjer, Pisces reaction video was awesome. This is the second video I have seen. Already a notified subscriber.
I read somewhere that when he was younger he started training to be a cantor. while he didn't end up going in that direction, he retained the rock-solid vocal foundations and has used them to excellent effect
I have watched many reaction videos of the studio and Conan live versions. The Conan Show performance was nominated for a Grammy, the backstage people came out to see what was going on, and the audience commented that he was given a 10-minute standing ovation.
dude , i love the way Elizabeth reacts to sonng . it's so real , seems so exciting to her. its hard to put it in words . like almost giddyif that sounds right.
This is my first time I’ve been introduced to him and he definitely is an awesome singer. I’m big into vibrato and he has a beautiful vibrato here. I’m really enjoying the videos you make especially your reactions and actually putting names to the techniques used by singers and why they do them.
According to David in his interview with Elizabeth, this was actually recorded in a single session (three hours, the longest of his career) at the _end_ of an already full day of recording, so no frog-voice tricks; he just normally does have access to that E2. This wasn't just the flu, either. At this time, he was dealing with a chronic lesion on one of his vocal folds. He'd been dealing with it for years, and was used to working around it, but it was flaring up badly. Hospital badly. This performance took a _ton_ of steroids, both ingested and injected, and IIRC he wound up having surgery to fix the lesion not long after.
Love it! I think you would also enjoy the band Iron Maiden. Bruce Dickinson is one of the best metal vocalist ever. Hallowed Be Thy Name would be a great song to check out.
I wanted to major in voice so badly. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for me but I LOVE LOVE LOVE listening and learning from vocal coaches. The intricate decisions made in the music...how to execute....it is fascinating and such an art. Very difficult. I have probably listened to 100 reactions of this song by Disturbed and every person says the same thing in one way or another. It is magnificent. Just magic
David and Myles Kennedy get a cover of The sound of silence when they were in Houston Texas live I can't remember the date it's hell when you're getting old😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love that you mentioned Elizabeth! I absolutely love watching her react to new music! And her friendship with Will Ramos is so heartwarming. Im actually about to watch the new footage of Will's medical/scientific vocal explorations! And if you haven't seen it, you should watch Will react to one of Elizabeth's opera performances. It's great!
I think you nailed it on why many like this version more than the original. For me it is absolutely the structure/arrangement and the way it builds and climaxes. The use of orchestral instruments also makes it feel more emotional IMO. But they definitely utilized stellar writing give it a poignancy that the original lacks.
I've had this argument with friends several times and another factor is the emotional tone of the song. My sorrow is rage, so of course I'm more tied in to this version. Others are more melancholy and Simon and Garfunkel resonates more. For consolation, Pentatonix, and so on.
Listened to an interview he gave, he was really sick. Yet most of the people in the audience probably didn't have a clue. He is an incredible artist and performer.
He absolutely smashed this performance, considering he had the flu at the time! I love Disturbed and saw this song performed live at Wembley. The atmosphere was incredible!
In 1964 (hit popularity in 1965) when Simon and Garfunkel released this it was during the Viet Nam War when young people were beginning to realize they had a voice. The message was an impactful wake up/rallying cry with a more gentle voice. I feel Disturbed’s version is a forceful reminder that we haven’t accomplished what we should have. Both versions are powerful with same message with different emotions driving them. (FYI I was a teen in 1964.)
He was really sick during this live performance...fever, congestion etc. Was sitting because he was too sick to stand and do the performance. People have said that Simon and Garfunkel's version was the warning, and this song is the anger because no one listened. David brings this song to such emotional intensity. Love your analysis of this performance....have learned so much about singing from your professional review. Thanks!
I think this performance was ecen more impactful than the video. The video version was absolutely stunning...his voice, the visuals, the feelings conveyed...all of it. But this? This somehow was even more emotional. What a testament to his talent that he gave this performance with a dangerously high fever.
Speaking of live performances, I noticed that you haven't done a breakdown of Rammstein. I recommend their performance of "Du Hast" live in Paris. He definitely does a lot of movement, and has a rather deep voice as well.
Really interesting, thanks! (I was going to make the Down With The Sickness joke too, so you needn't be too embarrassed 😛) One thing this makes me think is, I would love to see you and Elizabeth do an analysis together. You have very compatible styles (e.g. lots of pausing and rewinding) while still focusing on different details so I think it would work well.
The S&G original version was like a "warning of what may come", Disturbed's version is more of a "this has happened and we need to be alarmed" David has bad acid reflux, so he doesn't drink, smoke and he has a strict diet and times when he can and cannot eat.
Even those of us that grew up with the Simon and Garfunkle version are moved by this version. I cry whenever I hear this
The impressive fact is that he didn't have the flue.
He admitted in an interview that he had a bleeding lesion on his vocal cords.
Mindblowing.
Indeed...He had the flue when he performed this. The original music video of the cover is still one of the most moving pieces ever. David D is a amazing human. His compassion and support for mental health is like none other.

I’m seeing them at Knotfest in Sydney in 2 months and I am LEVITATING with excitement
Better yet, they are one of the few bands that always perform live, never anything but their instruments, including his voice. That's amazing.
In an interview, he said this song was the hardest thing he had ever performed vocally due to the high tenor cleans. Amazing even while ill.
What is a high tenor cleans?
Doing the high notes without his usual distortion so it's "clean" it isn't distorted in any way
He can sing high tenor cleans
David’s voice obviously is what makes this song. But can we give it up for the timpani player. This song would be completely different without it. Such a powerful compliment to David’s vocals
Especially considering he only has two drums and has to constantly tune them on the fly.

For consolation, Pentatonix, and so on.
he studied classical and opera
My best explanation is that Disturbed's version speaks to the modern culture, whereas Simon & Garfunkel spoke to their generation.
Yes, I love the original video of this. Very powerful. In a way I have not heard “Sound of Silence” performed before.
It is amazing that he can do this good of job while he is sick. Gave me the chills.
Your natural voice is really good. So deep and low. Wow! Amazing :)
In a recent interview with the Charismatic Voice, he said he actually had a painful lesion on his vocal cords, he wasn’t actually sick.
Vietnamese people living under communist tyranny wish they had a voice to rally. Or the weapons to fight back. Weapons you hippies denied us.
I think you need to hear before critiquing 🤯😡
I enjoyed listening to your professional break down of this song.
Thank you, Peter. I enjoy your technical breakdowns. I'm looking forward to you and Elizabeth discussing music and singing. 👍💯👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you! My personal favorite version of this song is the hound + the fox with Adam Chance. The Zambler’s songs and videos are always brilliant!
QUESTION....Peter, do you have the gift of Perfect Pitch. I am always amazed how you can hear a note and tell what it is and the key it is in.
Speaking of live performances, I noticed that you haven't done a breakdown of Rammstein. I recommend their performance of "Du Hast" live in Paris. He definitely does a lot of movement, and has a rather deep voice as well.
The algorithm has brought me back to your channel 4x in three days; I'm going to subscribe 😀
I'm super excited to see/hear your interview with Elizabeth!
He's voice give me goosebumps
The S&G original version was like a "warning of what may come", Disturbed's version is more of a "this has happened and we need to be alarmed" David has bad acid reflux, so he doesn't drink, smoke and he has a strict diet and times when he can and cannot eat.
just found this version... you didnt wait didya? wait a fuging minute
