    What's impressive, is that he produced that voice LIVE. A lot of vocalists can't reproduce the same sound live as they did in studio.

      what i find strange is that apparently the producer of the Show thought Disturbed needed a smigeon of Autotune. they really don't.

      It's a shame really that whoever it was decided to use auto tune. I don't believe it was David's choice to auto tune, but I could be totally wrong about that.

      It seemed even alot of Disturbed fans were accusing the band of auto-tuning it up. So David wanted to perform it live as soon as possible. He also said that he had a cold during this performance. Which is so badass and fearless thing to have done!

      Why would it be surprising that a metal band could produce quality music?
      Technically, metal is harder to produce than most other genres. I.e. it takes more technical skill to produce (not saying the music is better, per se). The only other genre that comes close is probably jazz (which in some cases definitely surpasses metal).

    I just came across this. I have performed with opera companies for over 20 years. I, like you, was convinced he is a baritone until I heard how easily he was hitting those A4's. Every time I hear this version I get chills up and and down my spine. It is genius! David Draiman's voice is genius! I LOATHE heavy metal! I went to a live concert just to hear this song, and it is even more captivating live. What was amazing, this entire crowd of heavy metal kids were crying during this song - they were joining in at the top of their voices. Simon and Garfunkel should feel proud. This version is almost as iconic.

    Finally a 'vocal coach' who doesn't apply their own stylistic bias and simply analyzes what is there, instead of saying "he should do this instead" or "I just can't get into it because I like the original". I think there's gotta be a point where a person's singing is so good that criticism would only serve to tarnish the artists vocal emotion. You can analyze... But to advise would be to take away from the singers honest self, which would betray the integrity of what they're singing. Humans are flawed so I like singing when it's a little bit flawed, which is also why I despise the overuse of autotune.
    I think anyone telling this dude he should have sung parts in a different way are full of themselves, or are nitpicking because it's their job, or just don't understand their own biases.

    THANK YOU! You are the first vocal teacher who recognized that he isn't using auto-tune. He is a classically trained singer. Most of Disturbed stuff is more of a metal variety but as you said he can choose when and how to grit things up. :) His name is David Draiman.

    • @BW_Drums
      @BW_Drums 5 років тому +107

      I love Disturbed and David Draiman, and everything this vocal coach has said is correct. But, unfortunately there is a bit of *pitch correction* in this performance, which isn't really the same as autotune. That doesn't mean that he was ever singing off pitch or out of key, because it seemed like he was always on key, but the effect still plays around with things like vibrato. Honestly, it seems like David didn't even know that there was pitch correction on the mic, and at one point he notices it and gives a funny face. Probably just a bad choice from one of the sound guys.
      Regardless, I think this showcases David's voice amazingly and is one of my favourite live performances of all time. Such an incredibly talented vocalist, and that shows here.

    • @Ingolenuru
      @Ingolenuru 5 років тому +30

      It is possible that I cannot focus on it enough to hear it due to medication but I can believe that their sound guy ALWAYS puts auto-tune on because Conan quite often gets performers on the show who are 'less than perfect' singing live. lol He says he doesn't use it and I can imagine him not being happy if they did it to him. If this is the case then the fact that he pulls off the rest of the song after that without a hitch just goes to show how confident he is in his instrument. Great singer.

    • @KaySan666
      @KaySan666 5 років тому +11

      i think what we have to be aware of is that in performances like that (on shows that are not staged by the band but by a Host) they do not have a say in what the producer of the show deems necessary for the show. So if that guy thought "lets slap some autotune on it" all they could have done is refuse to sing, if they were made aware of it beforehand.

When it was over I just had to sit quiet and let the tears run down my face. There is no way I would ever listen to a heavy metal song. I felt so deeply in love with this interpretation I had to see it live, so I went to a Disturbed. 99% heavy metal, then this song comes on. The entire crowd silenced, cell phone lights were raised, some had lighters, then entire crowd of sweaty gross heavy metal fans joined in unison at the top of their lungs. It was actually quite a spiritual moment. Tears were flowing every where, including mine. In my opinion, this is the most amazing cover of a classic song I have heard. "the talent of that heavy metal band is breathtaking"
      While I fully agree that Disturbed is very talented (seen them live twice), to be honest *most* of the top metal bands are ridiculously talented, you simply can't even play the music without years of training and often theory study as well. Yes, the singers are not usually vocally clean, that really would have trouble matching the music to be honest, but metal singers are always powerful singers who know how to bring that high passion and energy that's required to keep pace with the heavy and blistering guitar riffs.
      Give an honest listen to "Tornado of Souls" by Megadeth, "Practice What You Preach" by Testament, "Into the Mouth of Hell We March" by Trivium, or "Master of Puppets" by Metallica and see if you spot any talent. It's *different* talent than singing Opera, of course, but to me just as cultivated and developed as your favored musical form. Cheers!

Further more, the fact that you refer to the fans of metal the way that you do, and that you would "Never listen to a heavy metal song", you're just ridiculous. Have you heard of Symphonic Metal? Look up The PHantom of The OPera Live by Nightwish and you'll understand that metal is a very diverse genre of music that you can not judge based on a couple of examples.

    I cannot get enough of this performance by David Draiman and Disturbed. Don't know how I missed your reaction video--I've been tracking them down. I remember the first time "Sound of Silence"--the original by Simon and Garfunkel--played on WLS Radio in Chicago. I cried. And I guess everyone else felt the same, because the station's switchboard was overwhelmed with callers begging them to play it again. To come back more than 50 years later and hear a version that is so different but that hits me as hard as the iconic original did is magic. Makes me thankful to be alive! And you picked the right video to react to--this live performance rather than the official video (though it's well worth watching). Thank you for commenting, and for knowing when to be quiet and just listen (at the end).

    The impression I get, when I hear this guy sing this piece, is that he sat down and picked the song apart to a deeper and deeper level, and then said I'm going to employ this "trick" here, and this vocal inflection there, etc. I also think he did an AMAZING job of it, rendering feelings as well as the lyrics of the song in an almost visceral way. It is SOOOO different from the S&G format of it that I am familiar with, that it is almost a different song. I really enjoyed it and thought it very moving.

    To me, this live version is slightly better than their official studio version.
    I am 61 years old and while don't remember when Simon and Garfunkel did their original version in 1964 with just Simon's guitar or their record label's version, that unbeknownst to Simon and Garfunkel, added other instruments to it and made a #1 hit out of it.
    It wasn't until about 1969 or 1970 that I started listening to music and heard the song but it wasn't until I heard Disturbed's version that I really understood the lyrics.
    Now, I think of the original version as a for telling of what can happen in the future and Disturbed's version as an angry cry telling us that we failed or at least are failing to correct our ways.

    A voice is unique. No one sounds alike. The human ear can distinguish between thousands and thousands of different voices. You can instantly put the face to it. But it is not everybody that has this thing, this certain voice, whatever "that" is that makes a voice attractive. Go about your day and this will bear true, someone will have a voice that is pleasant to you, someone will have an obnoxious voice. Having said that the voice coaches never really delve into that part of voice coaching. To me it is something like a pheromone, and if you don't have "that", no matter how much coaching you have it wont be a huge hit song. This guy here has whatever "that" is and he has paired that coaching or practice or something. To me he nailed that big time. Progression was like nothing I have heard in quite a while.

      People whose voices hit both high and low notes at the same time, that is, those with a fuller sound, are more attractive. Listen to (old-school) radio DJ's and personalities, newscasters, etc. While almost everyone has a multi-tonal voice, often they are still in a fairly narrow range. If possible, check out isolated vocals with a spectrogram, and you can see the range of tones.

    I read that he was very ill with the flu during this performance. If you haven't seen the video, please watch it. It is amazing and gives the song meaning that many may not have realized before. It's very beautiful.
