Before I jumped into hard rock / heavy metal and branching out to deathcore and visual kei and whatnot, I was a huge pop head. I used to listen to Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Sean Paul, I was in it for that and R&B and dance. The first metal song I got into was 'Wait and Bleed' by Slipknot. From there alongside Mudvayne, Three Days Grace, and Korn, from 3rd Grade and now I was hooked. I jumped down my own rabbit hole around 6th - 8th Grade when I discovered metalcore and deathcore (Miss May I, The Amity Affliction, Attack Attack!, Thy Art is Murder, Whitechapel, etc.). I'm still pretty much scavenging the rabbit hole a bit more as if now and in 8th Grade is when I had my introduction to visual kei (Dir en grey, KILLANETH, D'espairsRay, the GazettE), then came Deviloof and some other modern bands about two / three years later...
I basically went from singing 'Firework' to my 1st Grade class to screaming, growling, singing, and just making noises in the shower-

@5555Thecrow You're right. The only way most of these vocal coaches could actually be legitimate and have suddenly appeared seemingly out of nowhere would be if they'd had a career in private for years that we never knew about because how would we find out?
Then, something really drastic would have had to have occurred, such as a pandemic that had everyone locked down in their homes for weeks and non-essential business to close or move their business online for MONTHS. ComPLETEly implausible, I know.
THEN, in order for all of these so-called "Vocal Coaches" to suddenly have channels and subscribers, we would have had to have had something called UA-cam and web cameras and something else called Amazon to help everyone buy video recording gadgets during said pandemic.
So yeah... totally fake.
No way could all of them be legitimately trying to take their experience and combine it into a video production. That would be BONKERS.
Not only that, but for these "so-called" videos to just suddenly show up in your suggestions or search criteria, there would have to be some sort of so-called "search algorithms" that UA-cam created that actually work.
You totally stumbled upon the conspiracy of the DECADE. Good for you.
@5555Thecrow I've been watching this dude's videos for about a year now and he has a good understanding of vocal anatomy, but clearly I should go back in time and tell past me not to bother, cos someone on the internet told me it's all lies, without any form of evidence, knowledge or charisma to back up their words.

David Draimon is the most talented active vocalist alive in my opinion. His range, his use of fry, and his ability to switch between fry and pure along with his breath control is amazing. The fact that this performance was done while he was ill speaks volumes about his abilities. I've listened to this song thousands of times and it never fails to give me goosebumps

I saw disturbed last year and they did this song. It was absolutely amazing. This song really needs to be heard live with your own ears. This man is talented beyond belief.

What is Spectacular about David’s live performance is he was suffering from 102 temperature because of a bad head and chest cold, it is the reason why he was having to sit while singing, but being a professional not wanting to disappoint the audience he didn’t cancel and went on to sing live!
Finally a vocal coach that has actually heard of disturbed who can appreciate the amazing rage and capacity for different style David has!

Oh, but David did. He HATED being autotuned despite being so sick he could barely stand.
If you pause it in the right place, you can see him giving stink-eye to someone off camera when he hears it the first time...
I am really bad at noticing auditory details like the live processing on the voice. I have tried to hear it out but couldn't spot it. Is it throughout the entire thing (which would explain why I can't find a difference between one section and another) or is it really just in a couple of occasions? I'd like to learn a bit^^
Barely stand? Dude he was sitting that entire performance if you look closely. His breath control while sitting is insanity.
@@dananaw The secret is the way he's sitting.
If you have a stool of the proper height (and you sit on the edge as he's doing) the posture of your torso is the same as if you were standing, and the sacrum can still freely move as you breathe.
Singing while sitting gets a bum rap a lot of times because people either slouch, trap their sacrum in the seat, or curl around a guitar and compress their diaphragm, but it's totally doable if you know the physiology behind it.
lol....I was just going to coment that.... besides....a sick David, is still better than most singers.
My brother passed away in April of last year. He wanted me to listen this this version since it came out. I thought it would be a dishonor to S&G but eventually I gave in. From David's first word I was hooked. I must have listened to Disturbed's version over 100 times and never tire of it. We played it at my brother's funeral. I miss him so much. This song connects me back to all the good in my brother. Thank you.
very sorry about your brother. his voice is so powerful it brings tears, cant imagine the tears at a funeral? most people have no clue to this band and it goes straight to your soul imo.

Shame he cannot even get close to as clean as David he cannot teach him a single thing he hasn't got the bare TALLENT. When he adds in his pretentious additions it shows he isn't even close
@@gowdsake7103 A vocal coach does not need to sing as well as the student to be able to teach the student. I have had coaches that do not have my voice quality but that I have learned plenty from. I appreciated the analysis on this reaction, although I don't agree with the take on the end as I love that closed consonant on "silence." All a matter of personal preference. David's voice is perfection in my opinion.

They just need to know technique and be able to teach it to do their job.

His vibrato paired with the distortion is what is so impressive. It’s just so powerful and controlled with incredible range.
I love when he holds those high notes with a mostly straight tone. It's like hitting a bell, so warm and smooth.
He was sick the night of this performance. He was upset that they did in a spot or two had corrected his voice. He was not happy about it at all. His voice is so trained that even sick he blows you away.
David Draiman is classically trained and also a cantor singer. He was sick the night he performed live on Conan, so pretty awesome considering!
Only one vocal coach reacting to this song noticed that. Kudos to her!

Actually he has a disease that causes acid to spill on to your vocal cords and makes it harder to sing clean vocals, but easier to add more grit and distortion to your voice.
The thing with the vowels like 'silennnnnnnnnnnnce' rather than sileeeeeeence I think is the focus on the emotion he's conveying. The N is closed, quieter, which fits with the theme of the song there. 2 words earlier he does the opposite with sOOUUnd... Same with the distortion vs clean vocals a little earlier in tenement halls, etc. To me it feels intuitive, like one of those things that I'd do better on a first try than after rehearsing and practicing for a long time. And I think that's why the song brings chills every time I hear it.

You are so right! And as a rock singer, it gives less "classical sound and more contemporary sound", to singing silennnnnnnnnce.. A choice by David, for sure.
I started reading the comments after that bit. I thought it was a deliberate choice to keep the song darker. The "e" would have made it too "bright" and it would have completely changed the emotions he was trying to convey and maybe the entire mood of the song. I think closing it like that would have made it sound much less solemn (and... ominous, I'd say).
David Draiman sounds just as good live as he does on album. Saw him my first day of high school back in 2008 and it was incredible. Dude's incredibly talented.
Seeing Disturbed live at least once is on my bucket list. If I do not manage to somehow make it work (I came so close this year but damn covid ruined it!), I will certainly come back as a ghost with unfinished business and haunt rock and metal concerts.
The holding on the "n" on "silence" at the end is actually something Paul Simon also does. It is something done often in poetry and songwriting to use certain consonants to convey certain emotions. Edgar Allen Poe, for example, uses "r" over and over again in his poems to convey despair and building anxiety. In the same way Paul Simon uses "n" in this song to convey the desperate silence, and stays on the "n" to almost actually imitate "the sound of silence." The first verse all ends in words that fit this.

And even though David doesn't to it in his version, Paul Simon always hold the note on the "n", drawing attention to the consonance. This was sort of my Master's paper.

It's really awesome to see someone get as excited as I do about David Draiman's way of switching on and off the grit in his voice at will and so quickly.
I am NOT into metal/hard rock or anything close......but this rendition of The Sound of Silence has me mesmerized. I have listened to this dozens of times. I’m a country fan, the acapella group Home Free is amazing, and I love the music of the late 50’s & 60’s......i was born in 1961. Again.....I love this song!
This is one of those covers that transcends the original, a “Johnny Cash - Hurt” moment.

Born in 1968 so the 80's were my teenage years, and some of the best music ever made.
I think they way he sung silence and the sound was very intentional and careful placed. He definately knows how to place each word to tell a story and make you feel what he is singing

The really remarkable thing about that performance was that David was quite sick the day they recorded this. It produced a quieter yet powerful version of the song. He sounds that good sick as a dog. Watch the official video if you want to hear him singing it with full power and even smoother transitions.
This song has always been of Biblical Proportions, Paul Simon's original was trying to wake us up and too many kept sleeping, Disturbed's version, is to shake those that were oblivious to where we are going. I pray this will stir many more to what is so important.
I'm 39. In 1994(13yo) I loved music, but, listened to mainly pop(Paula Abdul, Ace of Base, Vanilla Ice, etc.)
My best friend always made fun of me. So we went on a camping trip and he had The Crow soundtrack, which just came out.
The Badge by Pantera came on and something came over me. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had heard metal before, but, this....this was a breakthrough for me. I listened to it over and over. It filled my body with so much power, like a drug.
We went to a mall and I got the new Pantera(Far Beyond Driven) and White Zombie's - La Sexoristo.
This is when it took me over, and changed me, molded me to what I am today. FBD is still my favorite album to this very day.
I never knew music could you be such a powerful force. I never understood how some people have no interest in it.

I got into Asking Alexandria. I was trying to impress this goth/emo girl in middle school and I asked what she was listening to. She played me Morte Et Dabo by AA and I was kinda confused as to why she liked it. Later on that week I looked into them some more and found A Prophecy and the Final Episode which had more singing and electronic parts that were more familiar. Then I kinda started digging it and got more into Metalcore. Eventually it developed in High School and College into liking Black metal and Prog Metal.
And now you only listen to blackened deathcore??

As much as screams are my thing, there is something about almost operatic singing can move you. I felt myself almost tearing up i was so touched. Perhaps one day I'll figure out how to sing. That was beautiful.
Disturbed were one of the very first bands that made my shift to heavy music. I used to listen to rap on cassettes, 50 cent, eminem etc. Then i found a linkin park cd - minutes to midnight and the aggression blew my mind. I loved it. My auntie is a massive muso and heard i liked it and did some research for me and bought me indestructible by disturbed. That album changed my life. ❤️❤️

I am a Classic Rock Fan, I grew up in to 70's now a Grand father and at 60 I heard Disturbed "Sound of Silence" version and It has turned me on to listening to other disturbed songs, what I learned was that Metal had more to offer than just noise. I have added Disturbed to my play lists and what I like about them is their messages in their songs, it's positive from a negative, overcoming Adversity, addiction, depression, sickness and to fight.

I grew up with just the Simon and Garfunkel version. His performance gives this song the power and meaning I believe it truly needed to be effective. He sings as if a tremendous injustice has taken place and he seeks to make sure everyone knows it. I’m blown away every time I hear it. When Metallica released their Black album in 1991, it was my gateway. Prior to that, I listened to all the rock my dad listened to like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Bad Company, and the rest of them from that era. I’m 45 now and crank it up higher than ever. My wife hates it… lol
What got me into metal was the soundtrack to Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Hearing Mastodon, Bullet for my Valentine, and Avenged Sevenfold over and over again in that soundtrack definitely built the base for me getting into metal
As is well known and stated, David was rather ill, so they auto tuned him... Without his knowledge... He was rather disturbed by it

iirc though, they only auto tuned a couple of the high notes not trusting he’d hit them. But still, yeah, he was disturbed.

I grew up on AC/DC and Metallica...... but the first time hearing Du Hast from Rammstein was what got me hooked to metal.
When I was about 10 years old I listened to a lot of punk rock, this was right about the time of American Idiot. One day, my father asked me to come into his studio, he was a painter, and very disorganized. He told me he tried to sort his old cassette tapes. He found a bootleg of Manowar's Battle Hymns, which he acquired in the mid eighties in East-Berlin's black markets. He played it to me and I was fucking in. In the following years, I moved on to Dio, Hammerfall, that kind of stuff. I found my way into Power Metal, and Blind Guardian became my favorite band. When I discovered Judicator's At the Expense of Humanity, I got really into long songs and harsh vocals. I branched out into prog metal after that.
I don't listen to Manowar anymore, I have solidified myself in the realm of Power Metal, Prog Metal and Melodeath, but that is where my journey started.
When i was 12 or 13 i was in Texas with some family. A friend of the family brought her daughter to hang out. She started playing Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory album. The whole album drug me in and that was my turning point!
I love rock and metal because the music affects my body and the lyrics tend to reach a deeper part of me than other genres.

I had always liked the sound of rock music as a child, but I was never allowed to listen to it. In middle school I began to get more freedom and started listening to new music on the music channels on cable. Came across BFMV and loved it. Became addicted to rock music pretty quickly and listened to nothing but it for a few years before moving into heavier stuff (started out with Cradle of Filth in 9th grade).
Ironically what got me into rock the most was marching band. We played a lot of rock and pop tunes, mixes of Green Day, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc. and our band teacher would play the original songs so we had a better idea of what we were trying to emulate. Some of them grabbed my attention, so I started looking them up on UA-cam, then UA-cam started feeding me more and more bands. Next thing I know I've got Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed albums on my mp3 player. That was about half a decade ago. I've fallen more into the heavy metal side of things in the last couple of years after I started listening to Slipknot. It's a good bridge between genres because of the mix of clean vocals and heavy distortion. Now I've discovered Jinjer and death metal seems much more approachable. It's been a step by step process, but I've enjoyed every minute of it.

Metallica - One. This was the beginning of the end of pop radio for me. I was listening to my Walkman (yes, I'm that old), just flipping through whatever stations were playing. I heard it, and transfixed. I pace in whatever room I'm in. Afterward, I realized I had froze in place, and not moved until the end of the song. ...And Justice for All was the reason for my first job, and bought the cassette with my first paycheck. I wore out 3 cassettes. It was also the first cd I bought, and the first song I found on Spotify and UA-cam.
That song, quite literally, changed my life.
He was sick during this performance. Amazing.
The Diary of Jane was the one that got me into modern rock/metal. Wish I could see a timeline chart of how I got from there to IA now. LOL
dragging out the vowel instead of the consonant is more of a "pop" sound IMO - also, it makes a warmer sound, bringing the song full circle

This is a powerful cover of a song written in 1965!! This group has never done a song like this before as they are a Hard Rock/Metal group!!
This is my favorite song recorded in the past 5 years!! Wondrously and remarkably this is so far removed from Disturbed's typical music that anyone (EVERYONE?) is taken aback and or blown away!!
Not until this was released (12/2015) did anyone feel these lyrics so intensely!! This is way more dominant and dynamic than the 1965 original; not necessarily better!!
This song SHOULD be listened to by anyone who likes music; all genre listeners should experience this song!!

Good taste!!!! Love Ann Wilson’s Stairway to Heaven version. I’ve see her sing it live twice with her Ann Wilson of Heart band. She’s incredible! Also I’m a huge Trent Reznor fan and a Johnny Cash fan!!! I had tears when I first heard this. Still listen to that CD Cash released after June died.
Avenged Sevenfold Unholy Confessions is what got me into harsher music. Thats when I discovered Lamb of God and was hooked. Entered the rabbit hole and still havent returned lol

Great to see a metal voice coach. Im a instrument smasher coach. People think its easy to smash guitars but you have master the technique.
The first death metal song I heard was “‘Master’s Apprentices” by Opeth. And after that I never looked back. Love this this channel! Such an amazing, in depth, analysis of metal vocals!

David was a Jewish cantor before he went into metal--he was ill at the time this was performed thus he was sitting down but he still managed to sing just like in his video (which if you want darkness you should also watch that too) He does not use anything to alter his voice--he controls it--it does not control him! I am from the Janice Joplin era and I have Black Sabbath and War and so many more because I like the song's message or the way it lets my anger out without hurting anyone (I have PTSD) or it lets me cry my anguish away! I use music as a tool to survive this world--always have always will! Also I am 73 and have just about heard all of the good older bands--not into the younger generation's music as it is self center and carries no real protest messages the way mine did! “Enter The Sandman” in the 7th grade. I was definitely on the path to pop music when Metallica and then Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” made it into the pop charts with regular air play on 93Q. It’s why I never criticize metal and hard rock bands that get a popular hit. Somewhere, an adolescent child is hearing that heavy music on their pop channel, and discovering better music!
David turned my sights to Disturbed when I heard this song for the first time. Because of the vocals, accompanied by an excellent melody (thanks to S&G), my heart was captured and I can still see the storyline in my mind being played out. I love this version and I respect and am enchanted with the lyrics - all because of David's rendition of the classic song.
1st " Metal" song, was a LITTLE pre-metal, but just the same laid the ground work for the rest of my LIFE!!! And it was AC/DC Hells Bells. I was 5 years old when I 1st heard it, and for my 6th birthday I saved my $ from my cards and the next time me and my Dad went to a place called Murphys Mart, I bought it! I'll never forget the look on my dad's face as he read through some of the names of the songs and he asked me, "are you sure you want THIS record?". Yes, Dad, I really like it!!! Changed my life. Love ya Dad, miss you, 2 years now. Thank you for letting me get that Record WITHOUT Mom seeing it!!!

The first time I heard any sort of metal was actually Down With The Sickness in the back of my uncle's truck. From that moment forward; instantly fell in love. Now I try my best to mimic Ben Duerr's infamous sound, almost daily.

The song that got me into metal music was "Engel" by Rammstein. I was 8 years old. My mother still hates my brother for showing me that 😂😂

He was super sick when he did this performance. Production offered to use auto tune. He said under no circumstances did he want it used. The sound guy turned it on anyway during the first minute or so of his performance.
If you watch that first minute you can see him give the side eye to sound production when the turn it on. He was LIVID. He gave an interview and said he’d never been so angry during a performance.
Best vocal analysis channel. Keep the good stuff comin' man, much respect from Greece.

When I was 6 I snuck into my older brothers room(14 years older) and borrowed some of his cds. In the pile I grabbed was Disturbed The Sickness album. I thought ewww this looks weird. So I put it in my CD player and when Voices first came on I wasn’t into it. However I decided to skip a few songs and ended up on Down With The Sickness. That was the first metal song I actually liked, so I went to my brother and asked for more music like that. That’s when he gave me Korn Issues and Avenged Sevenfold Sounding The Seventh Trumpet, and with that my metal journey had begun.
When I was wrestling in elementary school, my dad turned me on to Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists album, and Evanescence - Fallen album, and I've only gotten heavier from there. Still recall playing Metallica on the piano, in my highschool classical piano class. Definitely get some strange looks thrashing Master of Puppets on a grand piano. Now I'm teaching myself guitar, as well as metal vocals. I've got the False Chord technique down, still perfecting it, while also trying to navigate my muscles through learning the fry technique.

One of my buddys said, "Check this out." He had a Sony Walkman and he played me For Whom The Bell Tolls and I was instantly hooked! I was listening to Judas Priest and stuff like that. It was 1984. Hearing Chop suey by system of a down for the first time is what made me love metal as a kid. The likes of disturbed, Metallica and others deepened that love.

Still remember the first metal song that got me into the genre was the “Wait and Bleed” music video by Slipknot. Before that, I just assumed all heavy metal was distorted screaming. Then heard that and thought, damn, this dude can actually sing.
that's what all people unfamiliar with such music think)))) that it's just screaming. but it's not very far from opera or classical, because it is also such great art, beautiful voices and melodies.
My parents were 80s metalheads so I was born in 93 into a life of metal 🤘🏼
Almost every concert(dozens) has been with my parents, you can 100% catch me and my dad front of a pit headbanging or sneaking backstage to meet bands. We've made tons of connections with bands, my parents birthed me into a life of metal rolling around in our 69 chevelle blasting Metallica, maiden and such 🤘🏼

my buddy alec had metallica's live shit binge n purge. we watched that everyday after school. not a specific sound but metallica got me into harsh music. got into iced earth and dimmu borgir and now im resting in the periphery phase of the spectrum

Yeah, you can actually see the dirty look he throws to the audio engineer when it's turned on. Then you can see him focus really hard, and I always imagine him thinking "screw that, I'm gonna sing so perfectly that it never activates again!" XD
I always grew up with metal. my dad is a huge classic rock and metal fan and that's just what i grew up listening to.
He was sick just got out of bed 2 his before the show hadn't talked for two days throat on n fire he had to sit after singing this live, but holy he'll he still a great job with it
