Most AR-15 / M-4 patterned rifles are overgassed. While a general statement, it holds true quite a bit. When a rifle is overgassed, it introduces extra carbon into the weapon and wears out parts prematurely. There are a number of ways people have tried to combat this. Such as using Extra Power Buffer Springs or heavier buffers to slow the bolt carrier group. While these work to an extent, they don't solve the issue of limiting the amount of gas in the rifle.
The Superlative Arms Adjustable Gas Block addresses this head on. It bleeds off extra gas out of the gas block rather than pushing it back through your barrel. And it has 30 clicks of adjustment. Unlike "Adjustable" gas blocks that move from open to suppressed, 2 Settings. This allows for you to fine tune your rifle with the appropriate amount of gas to ensure reliable function.
This creates a cleaner and softer shooting weapon. And if you run suppressors, you will see a HUGE difference when tuning your rifle with this adjustable gas block.

dude thank so much for making a video that explains this without taking an hour of my lifespan. Awesome work bro!
No problem, thanks for watching. I did a follow up on how to tune it (per Superlative Arms) as well.
I have a Superlative Arms adjustable for my new build, can't wait to finish my build so I can get this thing optimizer for unsuppressed and suppressed fire.
Did you ever try it in bleed off mode it just the restrictive mode like in the video? If so which do you prefer when suppressed?
I know. You get a college level dissertation from most of these dudes when it needs maybe 5 minutes
One correction....with the adjustment screw all the way in, there is NO extra gas going out the front of the gas block nor back into the gas key on the bolt carrier group. It is simply pinched off. All the gas goes out the muzzle behind the bullet. The rifle will not cycle. The bleed-off feature only comes into play when the adjustment screw is opened about 4 1/2 turns. Then, the extra gas isn't just following the bullet out the muzzle and slamming your bolt carrier group back. The extra gas is also bleeding off through the gas block to whatever amount you want. Too much bleed-off and the rifle won't cycle.
One correction...with the adjustment screw 4 1/2 turns out is the setting where the bleed off is closed and the gas port is wide open.....
This gas block fits perfectly under an atlas s one hand guard from aero. That hand guard is very slim, the set screw version is the only adjustable gas block that fits as far as I know.
Nice, didn't know that.
are you talking about the set screw version or the clamp on version? I got the set screw version because I was worried about the clamp on one not fitting
2nd Amendment Protects All Amendments both the clamp on and set will work with atlas s
I have atlas S One as well but its gonna be competition gun, I have the R one as well for dif upper
Had a 308 AR that was shearing rims off and stuck cases. Tried handloads at the bottom of the recipe, but still. Got this, adjusted it, and I love it.
Nice!
I’m adding this to several of my items. Both .308 and 5.56. Well done instructional video.
Thank you
well done. excellent teaching skills. like others said, you keep it succinct and still entertaining.
shout out to those birth control glasses
All day. Every day.
Great informative video, will be readjusting mine tomorrow at the range with my 7.5 suppressed and unsuppressed. I am subscribing now.
Awesome, thank you Joe.
Great video. Thank you very much.
Great video. In the market for a good gas block. You sold me on supurlative....thanks
Thanks Mr. Badger👍
No problem, thanks for watching.
Great review, thank you.
No problem, thanks for watching.
Excellent video man.
Thanks man, and thanks for watching!
Great video and explanation
Thanks buddy.
excellent video you just earned yourself a subscriber
Thanks man, I appreciate it!
Fantastic video
Thanks!
Great informative video.
Thanks Andy.
great video I have learned a good deal of info, Thanks
Right on Bryan, thank you for watching.
Great info
Sorry to comment on a 2 yr old video but I just picked up mine and need to install and tune it. Very helpfull and concise
Awesome Jim, glad to help!
@@KitBadger I have a couple questions regarding the gas block. 1) do you remember the bolt hole spacing? I want to dimple the barrel and there are no specs on it.
2) with the block in the bleed positions, does it get hotter under the handguard?
@@jimjones6657 1. No, just remove one screw at a time and mark it. 2. Not in my experience.
Jim Jones I just used the BRD jig. Make sure you buy the right one though
@@talltale9760 I bought a SLR Rifleworks jig and already took care of it. Went to the range and tuned it and it works awesome
Great video
Thanks man!
You deserve way mire subs
I'm in it for the long game, so it will hopefully come... Thanks for watching!
Good video,I have two of them one on a 308 Ruger precision rifle and one on a 6.5 Creedmoor semi-auto Anderson rifle I run both suppressed it really makes a big difference using that gas block both rifles are tack drivers
Nice, I'm glad they're working out for you. They definitely help smooth guns out.
Another area it shines is that the detent is outside of the block so carbon fouling won’t lock up the block
Just put one on a 450 Bushmaster with a .875 bbl. and a Armaspec buffer. Shopping fore ends now. Looking forward to recoil reduction. Good vid thanks for review, got it on MidwayUSA.
Nice man, let me know how that treats you.
Great informative video without the B/S. I love my superlative arms adjustable gas block on my 300BO pistol.
Thanks Ron.
I use it on a suppressed custom lr.308 and love them
Nice, they make a huge difference on rifles. I did a follow up on adjusting them too.
You can hear the Surefire tuning fork ring after the unsuppressed shot. First time I shot mine I thought my earmuffs needed replacing.
Locking the bolt can force it all thru the suppressor great for 300aac but 223 breaks the sound barrier so it still has a sonic boom leaving the suppressor
Thanks for the great video! Not too short, not too long, covered just about everything. Think I’ll be purchasing a couple of these for my setups; BCM Recce 300 AAC 9” SBR with pistol length gas (aggressive) and my Colt LE6920 5.56 carbine length gas (less aggressive). Currently have a Seekins adjustable on the Colt that works, but I’m turned onto the SA due to that “bleed off” feature. The 300 will be home to a suppressor almost permanently, so mitigating the gas will be a top priority for me. I have a few people suggesting a Radian SD charging handle to help, but I feel with the SA gas block that it may not be necessary. The Colt is nice because even with hot ammo after being fired, my dot barley even moves and never comes off target making for great follow up shots. An adjustable gas block makes a huge difference with these DI guns.
Thanks for watching Brandon. And yes, tuned gas systems are a game changer on guns. It makes a huge difference.
So glad you did this - news flash for all those on the fence about doing this conversion to a tired upper. It will be like a brand new upper that is a super soft shooting. My go to is noveske 12.5” mid length gas tube tuned 1+ additional click (for my hand loads) bolt lock to rear on empty magazine. #PureMagic #NoGasedOutFace
They are pretty awesome. :)
12.5 midlength? Dang!!
Criterian Core 12.5 is midlength too. Good stuff. @@joquin4618
Awesome video✊🇺🇸 would you suggest this gas block on a 14.5 in barrel thats pin and weld??
One of the better get too the point agb videos
Thanks Stanley.
Very nice review. While I was watching this I noticed that you did not mention the other advantage of the SA gas block. Your demonstration of the gas pressure testing was very precise. What you failed to mention was that you were only using the restrictive mode of the gas block. If that was all there was to this block you would only need half or the 30 adjustment settings.
The other 15 settings are part of the bypass mode which provide the same gassing (under/over gassing) advantages, plus the advantage of a recoil abatement bonus.
You get the advantage of recoil reduction when you tune it though, or am I misunderstanding? Also, you can't open it more than the gas port on the barrel. It ultimately can only restrict the flow of gas back into the weapon. Again, unless I misunderstood the guys over at SA.
Here is a link to one of Michael Bell's videos on the superlative Arms system. This is on the DI block, but the function is the same.
ua-cam.com/video/0y02vdDzRUk/v-deo.html
Sorry, I still don't follow. What is your question again?
Kit Badger He was pointing out there are 2 adjustable modes for this block. Standard restrictive mode (up to 4.5 clicks open) and bypass mode (5+ clicks). Both modes ultimately lessen the gas returning the action, but bypass mode vents the excess out the front of the block vs restrictive mode which leaves the excess gas in the barrel. Bypass mode supposedly improves felt recoil at the expense of 50-75 FPS, as well as runs the barrel and bolt cooler. Bypass mode also works better with a suppressors, according to the Bell video linked, as the FPS drop goes away.
Ok I gotcha, that makes sense. Thanks man.
Are you able to adjust the gas block with the rail and surefire flash hider on?
Is the gas bleed-off damaging to either your fingers or the handguard?
Now if it’s over gassed (with non adjustable gas block), am I able to throw in a heavier buffer weight?
Have you checked out KNS parts , they are making some cool stuff like AK adjustable pistons and flip up glock sights for clearing a can .
No, I'll have to take a look. Thanks!
@@KitBadger i guess they have some kind of 3d printed supressor impregnated with nickel or something .
Well Idk if I'm good to go on mine. Shooting .300 blk, the supers work fine with and without suppressor. But using subs it sometimes doesn't feed the next round. I have an aero gas block, called them and he tried to walk me through it. It's getting gas, but Idk how much. I have it wide open now. Is it possible the have SOME gas due to the hole not being precisely aligned? Or would it not work in that case? Not sure how to tell if it's a buffer issue or something else, I'm using a JP Silent buffer but they sent me the heavy instead of the standard. I'm returning it for the standard weight.
Question: do you ever need to adjust for altitude or cold?
This sounds like a perfect setup for shooting suppressed 300ACC subsonic rounds.
Absolutely. You don't end up with your face in a cloud of gas.
does this cycle subs and supers on that setting with and without can?
do you know what the center to center distance is for that gas block, I have an SLR dimpling jig and I can't find any info on those specs. Enjoyed the video.
I'm not sure Brent. And I actually sold that rifle. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I would try emailing Superlative Arms, they might be able to help you out.
In this video, are you adjusting the gas block screw based off SA's instructions of turning it out 18 clicks first, then adjusting the screw, or are you 6 or 7 clicks out from all the way in?
I just got one of these in the clamp on model for my first AR build. I'm having some issues. I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) that the adjustment screw is moving while firing. At the range I set it up to shoot as soft as possible (multiple different ammo brands 5.56 and .223 all advertised at 3200fps) and by the end of the visit an hour later brass was shooting almost directly in front of me and felt a lot more like an SKS than an AR. Am I crazy and just not able to figure out how to lock it down? Or is there something wrong with mine?
Yours might be broken. Perhaps the detent screw in there is busted (I think there is one in there). Try marking the adjustment screw on the gas block (AFTER you readjust it), like this: kitbadger.com/marking-your-rifle/
my truck gun is a 10.5 inch 5.56 ar pistol that is severely over gassed do you recommend using an adjustable gas block or trying out heavy buffers?
I would go with a adjustable gas block every day of the week. A heavier buffer and spring will slow the carrier, but all that gas will still be coming back into the weapon system. With an adjustable, you'll port that gas out.
are adjustable gas blocks unsafe in a home defense gun?
What suppressor are you using and how loud is it with out hearing protection on?
Surefire SOCOM 7.62 MINI. On an AR it isn't something you would want to blast off all day at the range. You can break shots without feeling like your ears are bleeding though.
Is there a setting that will block the gases 100%... but also not vent it out the gas block???
Basically i want it to perform like a bolt action...all gases 100% going out the muzzle. No venting anywhere else.
Where does the excess gas go? is there potential to burn your hand if holding hand guard in same spot as gas block?
No, it goes forward.
Whats more secure the clamp or set screw setup whats your opinion
I've never had either come loose on me. I wouldn't worry much about it unless you are planning on taking it to "work" in which case I would just get it pinned if it is a concern.
thank you. how do you decide between the clamp style, or the solid style? thanks
Honestly, I don't think there is a appreciable difference between the two with respect to durability. Go with what is in stock and will fit under your hand guards.
If you get a clamp-on, make sure it's steel, not aluminum. Aluminum is too soft for clamping applications and the threading will get stripped out, causing failure. I learned about that the hard way.
In general though I personally don't trust clamp-on gas blocks, regardless.
The should be great for the pistol I am building.
They are great adjustable gas blocks. Also, I did another video on tuning them if you haven't seen it yet.
Do you recommend the ones with the clamp or the screws?
Either or.
Being able to fully close it is great for completely suppressing your rifle by removing the sound of the action cycling
It’s a fun option to play with. :)
Wouldnt you want all the gas to go through the suppressor for most noise reduction?
@@gregalfrey3606 that’s what happens when you fully close your gas block. All the gas leaves the gun through the suppressor instead of being redirected to cycle the action.
Is it better to adjust a rifle this way or tune it by the position of the brass ejecton the way you show in your other video?
The other method is preferred per Superlative Arms, but either will work.
Kit Badger did you cover the bypass mode in this other video you mentioned? I haven’t looked it up yet.
for an extremely over gassed 10.5 inch 5.56 AR do you suggest an adjustable gas block and if so should i just keep the carbine buffer or should i go the route of changing the weight of the buffer? also, i am not running this gun suppressed...
I would use a gas block. You'll address the problem and keep your gun running cleaner at the same time.
Kit Badger so what buffer weight should I use with an adjustable block?
Any buffer will work. You’ll be tuning to it rather than using it to tune your rifle.
You should use the bleed off function, way better.
What best ammunition should I run through my sig 516?
Anything you can find these days. :(
Recent sub here, you make great content and I'm glad you covered this gas block. I was wondering, is the bleed-off easy to clean? If used on a short barrel, do you think it could muck up a muzzle device quick?
Hey man, thanks for subscribing! As to your questions, I never had a need to clean it. As to carbon getting pushed out, it was never a problem for me. Mind you, I don't keep my guns "clean", I typically just re-lube the and shoot them. :)
@@KitBadger Sounds good, I'm excited to install mine soon. Thanks!
penetrating oil to clean and stop carbon lock on adjustable gas blocks.
Hell yes!!! Been looking at these for a while. Do you feel like it’ll be a reliable gas block? Would you trust your life to it not falling apart or coming out of adjustment? I have a DDM4a1 and it’s WAY over gassed!
While that is a tall order, and any weapon component will eventually fail... ...Yes. I am confident in the gas block. It does an amazing job with overgassed / suppressed weapons.
Kit Badger nice man. Thanks. I get weary of more moving parts than is necessary. While my rifle form is likely not perfect, I have enough experience to know I should be able to control it better than I can. Maybe I’m a wuss, but I feel like tuning the Carbine down a little will help.
A tuned rifle actually makes a big difference. If you haven't checked out a few of my other videos, here is one on tuning the SA Gas Block: kitbadger.com/tuning-a-superlative-arms-adjustable-gas-block/
Or how to tune your rifle with your stock non-adjustable gas block: kitbadger.com/how-to-tune-an-ar-gas-system/
I cannot feel or hear the adjustments on mine?
I am finishing ar15 build tonight, I want to shoot it before this v seven handguard gets put on.
Having issues with my 10” pistol in 7.62x39 build,,, any suggestions?
What issues?
Will this superlative arms agb fit under the MK18 rails ?
Yes, it should. Dimensionally you can't get much smaller than it's size.
Are you wearing earplugs? Would you want to adjust your gasblock to locklback without a supressor first. So it works for sure with a supressors instead of the other way around like you did?
Yes I am, and I even mention it. :) And yes you could. Honestly, my suppressed guns, I almost never shoot unsuppressed. And to that end I'd rather have them not overgassed when I shoot them.
@@KitBadger thanks. I could barely see those earplugs. I heard you mention that we should all be wear ear protection. I will be adjusting my gas block today on my 308
@@akaTheDevil awesome man, let me know how it turns out.
would you recommend the superlative arms over Q's adjustable gas block???
I'm not sure, what would you be using it for? Is weight an issue?
@@KitBadger Weight isnt a huge issue, but i shoot with a can 100% of the time. Just not much info out there about Q's gas block. Will it work on a any AR style .75 diameter barrel?
@@stab9912 yes, it will work. And if you are going to set it and forget it, I'd probably go with it. It has the potential to lock, but if you aren't adjusting it past your initial couple tweaks, it is a non issue. And every bit of weight savings can be nice.
Can this gas block solve the gun jam problem?
If the problem is caused by it being overgassed.
It's supposed to bleed off not restrict correct? Superlative arms told me to start at 4.5 turn out from closed (wide open) then turn counterclockwise until you get 3 to 3:30 ejection.
Restricting what is going back into the gas tube and bleeding off the rest as I understand it.
Kit Badger The restriction and bleed off features are separate. You are getting no bleed off whatsoever until you turn it lefty loosey past the wide open setting (4.5 rotations out). Tighter (as seen in this video) than 4.5 turns out and you are restricting flow like any normal adjustable gas block, but if you loosen the adjustment past the wide open setting until you get to the angled vent hole... then you start venting gas. Both operations are allowing less gas to go back to the bolt carrier. Watch Michael Bells video on this to better understand.
how much, if at all, does it reduce gas to the shooter's face?
A lot.
Does this AGB require maintenance?
No.
Would you put this on a duty rifle?
Yes.
@@KitBadger Aight thanks dude, I thought the bleed off could cause reliability problems
When optimized this can also make your AR "hearing safe" when suppressed by bleeding off that extra gas in the direction of the muzzle.
...... Didn't touch on the bleed-off feature
Agreed. I think he thinks the bleed off happens with how he has it set.
Ditto j hall19k - This was a great, to the point, informative video. Thanks!
Right on, thank you for watching!
Riflespeed ADJ gas blocker system is more better'er. No tools needed'ed.
People always say its a suppressor not a silencer... The u.s. patient actually says silencer
You loose velocity with that gas block.
Compared to a standard gas block? How much, about? I need to get a chronograph, I'm curious now.
@@KitBadger were you able to verify this?
@@koldblooded2309 no, I haven't had the chance. And while I am curious, I'm also busy. Don't have the time right now to shoot rounds, get data, replace the gas block and repeat... :(
Michael Bell's excellent video, running thru the modes, can/no-can, showed definitively that there is NO MV loss. What WILL happen is that in restrictive mode, the left-over gas continues down the barrel and causes a JUMP in MV. You may not want this, especially if you don't want to batter your can. But he took excellent baseline MV values and the diff in that baseline with running the block in bleed-off mode was literally 2 (TWO) fps.
@@weshoward4301 thanks for the heads up Wes.
looks like too much shit on a rifle. all you need is a basic working AR and a ACOG.
Cool.
Do you know if this would fit under a troy alpha rail?
